Hm, seems the 8600 GS isn't really that much faster than the current X1700 or 7700, at least according to these benchmarks. Am I missing something?

No, the 8600M GS is quite under powered compared to the GT version.

Although I'd like to see real world comparisons, these prelims make me feel better about splurging for the G1S v. the B1

    Edit:

Ken, does the G1S look relatively the same as compared to the G1?

Seems like the G1S blows the F3 out of the water (although i think that was expected). So now the question is, do you splurge and drop the extra 300 for the G1S

I was thinking of getting the F3Sv, Now Im leaning more towards the Zepto with the GT, I can beleive what a huge score difference there is o.o On the Zepto website their claiming 4100 3dmark06 points, but their battery life is hideous. 2.5 hours with 6 cell and 4.5 hours with the 12 cell (which dosent make much sense, shouldnt it be 5 hours?)

Why would such a higher-end laptop comes with a 80gb HDD? I believe it comes with a 160GB 5400rpm, but it's upgradable to better ones.

YAY!! The G1S is actually a reasonable improvement over the G1P! Good job Asus!!!

btw, after careful considerations and talking to most of the resellers (some of you just on the forums), I have decided to buy my G1S from you guys at GenTech! Probably closer to next thursday, when I get my paycheck (been an expensive couple of weeks =P, but I can afford a new computer, hell I need one!). I think posting this thread might have pushed me over! Thanks GenTech!

the 06 score on the 8600 gs is below the 7700 go.

I think its below the 7600 go. Its around the same. Its really slower actually when you consider the cpu is faster.

Wow 68C at default? Is that running anything? Sounds like the fan would be going non stop. Battery is one of my biggest concerns, I really doubt the 4 hours on 6 cell the Asus spec sheet is claiming.

This is GDDR3 right? The Zepto 8600M GT only has GDDR2 running at 400mhz but was overclockable to about 450mhz. I wonder how high you can push the G1s without running into problems.

Then the GS runs at a basic ram speed of 133mhz? Sounds like it must be very cheap vram or super overclockable!

Unless there are big driver issues the 8600M GS is a downgrade compared to the go7700 and only a very small upgrade when compared to the go7600 and x1600/x1700.

I dont really understand this. I was expecting the 8400M GT to reach 2000 3dMarks

ya actually in the past the score difference between a 7600 and a 7800 go would be less than this, the next model up is roughly twice the speed. This gpu is actually more than twice the speed.

several of the tests are cpu only so if you consider 3/10 the score is tied, 7 of 10 the gpu is twice the speed.

I think someone overclocked the zepto and got to 4400 or something like that, so Id like to see what the 8600 gs can overclock to.

Just for extra comparison, I had a quick google and got to the notebookcheck list of benchmarks for mobile cards - here's what that says for the 3dmark06 scores.

    GeForce Go 7950 GTX - 5214
    GeForce Go 7900 GTX - 4766
    GeForce Go 7900 GS - 3800
    GeForce Go 7700 - 2700

From this the score posted here for the 8600 GT is WELL above the 7700, and just below the 7900 GS, which makes it pretty nice in my books. The 8600 GS is considerably below the 7700, which I agree is disappointing.

Looking good for the GT here :b

I was a little apprehensive, but I always felt like the 8600GT would be something special for lappy owners. (OC'd it gets close to the 7900 GTX!!!)

Poor ATI...is no one hoping for a HD 2600 XT lappy from Asus at all?

We would, but most of us are buying in the now-ish range. The 2600XT won't be out until the fall.

3Dmark06 scores only go halfway in comparing performance between cards and this its especially difficult with different generation cards..

I think some real world game benchmarks should be checked out to gauge the performance of the 8600M GT or the 8600M GS.. Especially new age games with good pixel shader usage as this is where the new gen cards shine.
