whats wrong with buying from us dealers? you pay the same 14% tax buying it in ca as you do from the states.

It's a quick and simple task. There is a panel on the bottom that takes removing one or two screws. The panel is there so that you can upgrade your own memory. It will cost you a whole lot less as well.

That's not "quite" true. I'm from Manitoba and online Canadian retailer like NCIX will only charge me 6%. Now, I don't have problems paying the 14% (actually 13%), only thing is I don't like surprise fees (brokerage, duties, etc.) the UPS guy is asking me to pay when they deliver things from the states.

I found one retailer in TO that carries the B1. You might want to check them out and post the result in here.

Btw this is what they're charging me shipped to MB.
    Asus Notebooks: Asus F8SV-B1 Notebook 1,499.00 1 1,499.00
    Sub Total: 1,499.00
    Shipping: 60.00
    GST (6.00%): 93.54
    Additional charge (2.00%): 33.05
    GRAND TOTAL: $ 1,685.59

I'm not just sure why is there and additional charge of 2%

Would TO be == Toronto? I live in Saskatchewan. I'm also only interested in the A1 atm, don't have the money.

As for the manual install of RAM, I'm leaning towards the pre-assembled as from Gentech it is only a $19 difference between the stock model @ 1GB and 2GB. I'd also like to avoid the whole 14% tax dealie.

Just joined, basically for this. Excalibur PC? They say they have 36 in stock and ready to go? Please post if you've ordered a laptop from them before, I'd like to decide and get one very soon. Also, if anybody has any really good points comparing between the B1 and the G1S-A1 I would appreciate it.
    Thank you,
    Sal

The b1 should have the same score or slightly lower depending on res, its basicly the same system +.2 ghz on the cpu and a higher res screen. The cpu diff shouldnt change anything because i think at that speed, the gpu will be the bottleneck.

Also, the higher the res, the lower the score, if any b1 test come out lower, just think that if the res was dropped it would come out the same

Ok, whew, I was getting a little worried seeing those scores, seeing how I'm picking my b1 up tomorrow. So, the higher the res, the lower the score. Makes sense.

Yeah, in games I'll most likely have the res lower than the native anyways, to help performance. But still have it at 1440 x 900 for desktop/browsing/ect.

Both A1 and B1 has has the same 3DMark06 score at same resolution, that's why I didn't run the 3DMark06 again at 1280X800.

Actually, the B1 will be slightly higher at the same resolution, due to the CPU test in 3dmark06. But in gaming performance will be the same at the same resolution, in most games. (A small minority of games that are CPU bound, such as some newer RTS' will perform better on the B1 than the A1 at the same resolution).

I tested it but the result is the same, but yes, the higher CPU might help in real world gaming.

Also I was able to install video card driver with 3GB of RAM under XP:

Just need to disable PCI Express Port 1 and 5, reboot the computer and the Video Card driver installed successfully.

    Thanks to Irathi's guide:

My thoughts on my recently purchased F8Sv-B1:

    - Size and weight just about what I thought, not as portable as my old 12" laptop but definitely portable. The bag that comes with it looks nice and will come handy.

    - Screen is BEAUTIFUL... the resolution is high enough to make me think about buying a new pair of glasses, color and contrast look good, no ghosting effect in games.

    - It is FAST. The first thing I installed was Orange Box and I played through Portal in 1440x900 with a nice frame rate, with all the bloatware from Asus and Windows Vista. I'm currently playing Team Fortress 2 (it's crack, don't ever play it if you want to have a life) at 1024x768 and the only time I ever had a slow frame rate was with 12 players in the same place firing rockets all over the place.

    - Comes with a lot of bloatware... I don't really know what I should or shouldn't uninstall, so I'm all ears for your advice.

    - The fingerprint reader is either totally unreliable or I don't know how to use it (probably option #2). The touchpad isn't the best one ever, thankfuly they send a rebranded Logitech mouse with 2D scroll with the computer. I haven't used the keyboard too much so far (I use a G15 for most things), so I can't give feedback on that yet.

Overall I'm pretty happy with my purchase, I think it's a great notebook for gamers.

And finally, I bought it from GenTechPC and I recommend their services, Ken was always quick with the answers by email and they have the best prices around with that $40-off coupon.

Hey what program did Ken use to OC in the begining of this thread?
I am thinking about giving it a try on my F3SA with HD2600 512mg
Or was that just for Nvidia?
    Anybody else?

My impressions are pretty similar. Mine was just delivered from ExcaliberPC. It's not as easy to carry around as my old Latitude D400, but it's much more powerful. Battery life doesn't seem to be too bad either, though I haven't been able to break 2hr45min with WiFi on, which would be nice. I might have to do a clean XP install for that, I suppose.

    Hello to all!

    since weeks i am looking for a new Notebook - and i think i found it here!The F8SV B.

I can´t find the F8SV on the ASUS-Homepage - is it not listed yet?

    Is it a silent notebook?

How much noise makes the aerator under pressure?

Is there other background noise to hear?

Is the fingerprint-Reader working also in this way, that i can signing up for all sites - like Banking, Forums etc.?

    Tks for info!

I haven't used it in a library or anything yet, but I can't hear the notebook over the background noise of my house. I have yet to hear the fan come on if I'm not gaming. I haven't really played with the fingerprint reader, but supposedly you can use it to remember passwords for any website.

And it is really not listed on the ASUS-Homepage?

Yeah, it's listed on their homepage.

And no, it's not silent during gaming. I can hear the fan come on then, though it's not too loud, more like a soft hum.

Ive been using the fingerprint reader to sign in, its pretty awesome

also asus secure has the ability remember every browser password and auto log you in even without cookies, it works for ff and ie7 (i havent tried others), but it can get quite annoying, but luckily, you can turn it off per app instead of completely killing it

On a side note, i once used msconfig to shut asus protect out of starting up with the computer, and it also effected my fingerprint reader, i literally could not log into my computer even with the finger swipe or password, i had to safe boot and reactivate it for start up just to get back in

So how does this finger print reader works exactly then?
What is this TPM chip? Does it have anything to do with that? What do msconfig do that was conflicting?

Is there a way to get the fingerprint reader to sign you into Vista without the Asus Protect?

    Fingerprint Reader = Awesome.

    Asus Protect = Annoying.

Also, Gentech is awesome. The customer service is so helpful, Ken's great.

Unfortunately, though, I've been having a bit of Vista trouble. I'm running 64bit Ultimate and the following has happened:

Whenever I boot up, it says that winload.exe failed to load and references that the status is 0xc000000f. I'm currently at a relative's house and my Vista DVD is at my house so I can't do the system restore thing.

Other than that, this laptop's awesome.

That´s why i will downgrade to Windows XP Professional - i fear this Probs, and they will come!

Are all the XP-Drivers are available and are there Probs during installations?
Will some ASUS-Feature disappear after Downgrading?

How is the speed with WLAN N and LAN 1000?

Does it makes sense to insert 2 x 2GB or is it the same as 1 x 2GB and 1 x 1 GB?

    Which RAM is compatible?
Only this or also others? SO-DIMM DDR2-667 PC2-5300

    http://www.laptopmag.com/Review/Asus-F8SV-A1.htm

What is this mean: "The F8SV-A1's MobileMark07 score". Is this the battery-test?

BTW, the F8SV is not listed on the German Homepage

I use RivaTuner to overclock the GPU but it doesn't work on ATI HD2600, I also tried ATI Tool but it doesn't work either. someone mention another overclocking tool for ATI and I don't remember the name of it.

Asus protect manager is required, it store your passwords and when you swipe your finger it send passwords from Asus protect manager to password field.
But sometimes the Asus protect manager response very slow, you have to wait for few seconds for it to popup.

Winload.exe error could be corrupted master boot record, try insert the Windows disk and make sure delete the current partition and do a clean install of Windows again that should fix the problem.

Ok , cus i tried ati tools, just to get the temperature reading. ( i dont know anything about video specifications :D ) i thoguht it was just it was just a pock arround and learn thing. Not at all, I changed something I wasnt suposed to, and the laptop would no longer shut down/restart. And what pissed me off if that even after uninstalling the ATItoos, it doesn' restore your system to defaults! So i had to uninstall, and reinstall the driver all over again.

Powerstrip sofar has been great, It did actually give me the right resolution.
But the OC feature doesnt seem to be working.
Anybody has a program where i can OC and get temp readings of varius parts of my laptop?
    :)

You can try Omega drivers for ATI see if you can overclock it with ATI Tool, I haven't try it myself, but it can play Crysis at good frame rate without overclock using Catalyst 7.10.

Also I just upload F8SV-B1 Team Fortress 2 game play video:
    Setup:
    F8SV-B1
    GeForce 8600M GT 256MB
    Driver : 169.04 no overclock
    3GB RAM DDR2 667
    Resolution: 1440X900

I just got my F8 from GenTech and so far I'm really liking it.
I have a few questions though, the F8 came with two paritions, is that suppose to be normal? And I have to pay UPS an extra 50 something dollars for some "Brokerage Fee," what is that suppose to mean?
My fingerprint reader also takes a while to scan, as in, I have to try a couple of times to get it to work. Am I not doing it right or is there something wrong?
    Thanks.

All Asus Ensemble notebooks comes with 2 partitions (C: OS, D: Data)and 1 hidden partition (for system recovery).

Yes UPS does charge broker fee for shipping to Canada.

swipe your finger slowly and put your finger close to the fingerprint reader, it does take sometimes to get use of it.

Well im so confused after reading every single page so im gonna ask a few questions and hoping i get a good awnser i understand.

    1) Im going to assume the B1 is better correct?
    2) If i get the B1 i should get the XP Pro set up with 3gb?
    3) If my last question was wrong what setup should i get i dont want vista only because the benchmarks looked crap compared to XP Pro

    1) Essentially, yes.
    2) I don't mind the Vista Home Premium install it comes with, personally. I'd recommend 3GB at least though, yes.
    3) Real world games (for newer games at least) play essentially just as well in Vista as in XP.
