    impressive review dude :)

Do you think you could try my config (ezy e config) and tell me how fast insane lvl 4 runs. becuase im buying this laptop and it will be in hand in about 3 days :)

and does the keyboard light up?
and is this processor faster than a i7 1.6ghz when overclocked?
and how much of a differance will an i7 make in gaming?
and would a ssd help at all?

if you can answer that well thanks :)

Hi all i have a G71Gx from june 2009 and i'm very happy with it, yesterday returning from a plane trip my backpack felt on ground and now i see the display green and like missiing a row of pixels after a good row of pixels, I talked with a computer repair friend and told me that the display controller on top of the screen should be broken, I live in Venezuela were there is no chance to get it to a warranty service repair and if were i dont think that after a drop the warranty is out.

I have found the original screen WXGA+ for buying but also found this: http://www.screentekinc.com/Asus_G71G--17-inch--1920x1200-wuxga-laptop-lcd-screen.shtml
That is WUXGA... This last should work on a G71GX Best buy?

English it's not my native language so sorry for the bad writing.
    Best Regards
    Armando

Ha yes I know this laptop is awesome I'm actually using it now.

I'm just wondering for the future. I heard this lappy had an MXM slot to upgrade the gpu? I can't to see to find much info about it.

yea it has MXMb and you should be able to upgrade the gpu :)

Also why would you want to upgrade the gpu already?? the HD5870 is only 6 percent faster which is nothing if you slightly overslcok your 260m??

I sure wouldnt pay 300-800 more just to get a 6 percent faster gpu.

    kinda like 30fps vs 31.8fps
    or 60fps vs 63.6 fps

people claim the hd5870 in the asus g73jh is 30 percent faster, but in sythetic benchmarks and reality its only 6 percent, and on top of that its from a diff company and is likely to run some games faster and others slower when compared to the 260m gtx?

    Hey Da1writer,

I'm pretty new to this forum.
I stumbled upon your post, because I'm the verge of buying a laptop, whereby I want as much gaming value as possible. Here is a email i sent to my brother, asking his opinion, but seeing as you are very knowledgable about laptops and especially familiar with this product, i was wondering If I could run this by you. The gist of my email is whether or not it's worthwhile to wait and but the upcoming generation tech at a similar price point.

"I think I'm keeping the fever at bay, considering I haven't strayed to far from $750 with this selection of impressive laptops..

I'm also concerned with DX11 support for the GTX260M. What the impact of not having it?

    2)DDR2 vs DDR3
yeah it's got 6 Gb, but does the DDR2 pose any limitations.. similarly the L2 Cache vs L3 Cache

on a side note, the FPS achieved with the HD5650 in the review were achieved using an I& QM720 chip (1.6 Ghz- 2.8 Ghz), not an I5 M430 (2.26Ghz -2.53Ghz)

got jr.com to price match w/ ecomelectronics.com ... lost the benefit of the presidents day coupon and didn't push to price match the ecomelectronics coupon, but still got an additional $54 off... might have pushed for the extra $25 in coupons, but didn't wanna push it. b/c the laptop's already enroute. besides .. ecomelectronics doesn't do bing cash back.. :) so i can still be pretty happy with my deal.. $765 after cash back..

Hello people, i got this laptop around September of last year and wanted to know if there is a battery that can give me more than the 1 hour and 40 minutes I get, or where I can buy an extra battery for my laptop because i need more battery in school.

Hi everyone, I currently am a proud owner of a Asus G71Gx-Rx05 and I was wondering about what upgrades/modifications could be done to my machine. I was wondering if it was confirmed that the laptop can handle 12GB DDR2 800MHz and not the specified Max of 6GB.

Also, does anyone know what the best processor the laptop can handle? Last I checked it was either the Core 2 Duo T9900 or the Core 2 Quad Q9100. Can anyone provide some information about that? Thanks.

Is that the best processor this laptop can handle? Also could anyone suggest a good replacement hard drive for this laptop? I plan on upgrading the hard drive and using the one it came with as extra storage. Thanks!

I was also wondering what is the fastest and most overclockable CPU you can put in the Asus G71GX BB version that comes stock with the P8700 CPU ?!?

If I put T9900 would I be able to overclock it? Or Core 2 Extreme X9100?

I have the BBRX05..... So... my fan is always running on medium to max speed. My idle temps are

    GPU: 70 (stock)
    CPU: 55/54 (core 1/2)
load when not using mouse= >10%
Load when using mouse= around 50%

What is going on with my computer that everything is fluctuating so much? I'm still having the downclocking issue with the GPU.

edit: now idling around 60 for each core

The GTX260m on the G51/G71 was a little picky on drivers, from the time that i used it the best drivers i found that downclock on their own were 198.05 MS update, most of the early 2XX.XX series didnt, but i sold my laptop and i have no way of helping test newer drivers, from my experience all but 1 from MS update drivers downclock the card on their own, so my suggestion is to try to check the latest that MS has, also try the 266.58 from nvidia web (link in my comment).

Now if you want to use the latest drivers and they dont down clock on their own, then you can use alternative addons like PowerMizer Switch - get the most out of your video card

This could be couple of issues

    1) You gpu is overheating and the card downclocks so it doesnt get damaged, 70C is extremly high for idle (unless you have open videos or anything that clocks up the gpu). Your radiator might be dirty, have you clean up lately?

    2) Have you tried different drivers? on desktops some people were complaining about the nvidia cards downclocking when gaming, this is mostly drivers related and sometimes more to gpu utilization. But each set of drivers some people see fixes, so i would suggest to try different drivers, from 198.05 to latest 266.58.

Download and run GPUz to monitor the cards temps and gpu utilization, go to the sensor tab and enable both bottom options (log into file and continue refreshing while in background), go play your game and post a log if you can.

80C is a fine temp, with GPUz you can also check the max temp that you had in your gaming sesion, just click on the triable right next to the text, but 80C gaming is a really good temp for a G71.

that's my idle right now. 76* atm.

GPU 70* after complete system reboot (other than data partition)
CPU 50* after complete system reboot (other than data partition)

Fans still a bit loud though... Is that a problem?

You need to start posting a little more info the only temps thing not even worth it, say what you did, did you clean it? post the gpu logs, else nothing else i can say. To me the cpu temps are a little high, but not too much, the gpu idle is high, but idk even what drivers are you using or even if they downclock.
