60-65 degrees under heavy load is pretty good. Certainly nowhere near the thermal limits

    Hi guys,
    finally, after 4th return, I received seems-to-be-working piece of ux302lg :)
So I'm gonna upgrade my RAM (I have 8gb Crucial stick) and mainly - upgrade the SanDisk cache to 128GB SSD Super Cache from mydigitalssd.com.

And I would like to ask you I you can provide me some tips?

First - after update from Win8 to Win8.1, I have some new recovery partition(s). And because I'm little bit perfectionist :) I'll be happy if this recovery partitions could be cleaned somehow?
It doesn't matter if my laptop could be recover to Win8 or Win8.1. I just want one recovery option and no mess in partitions (now I have 3 partitions labeled as "recovery" with 900MB, 450MB and 20GB).

Second - what is the best way to swap HDD to SSD? I mean cloning or clean instal or?
In the ideal state I would like to have OS installed on my new SSD and HDD parted to data partition and recovery partition.

Could it be done somehow? :) Thank you guys for any advice.

I would do a clean install. That will also solve your recovery partition problem because you won't have one. Recovery partitions are worthless in my opinion. They take up space and if your drive fails, you can't use it anyways. Embedded product keys made recovery partitions less valuable. The only catch is you have to install all the drivers yourself, but the prize is no bloatware.

I don't agree, thus is important for many users. looking to other posts, I think many of us have the same problem. We are forced to buy it with weird keyboard layouts just because it is impossible to find it in QWERTY layout, it is out of stock everywhere.

. In my case I just bought it in amazon Germany. (thanks to chrome translator...) and I will have to swap a couple of keys . I suppose it is just a question to not exert too much force, just be patient to find the direction to push and lift the opposite angle ( never push upwards! ) . In fact I am already practicing with my old hp laptop and it was pretty easy (although I have lost one key flying away somewhere) .
First brave owner to achieve it please post it, I am sure there are many of us eager for instructions to follow you (I think nobody wants to be the first ha ha )

I think this beauty worth it even if I need to learn German layouts, as it is the only true ultrabook with nvidia graphics and more than 4GB RAM, and also upgradeable to 1TB SSD.. . No other Ultrabook can even dream to go close to it

Also interested in installing Ubuntu, do somebody has any advice?

Tip.: Regarding hackingtosh, I have seen it working in a vmware virtual machine in other laptop, and it was pretty fast, faster than Mac Air to start with. Virtual machine avoid the need for drivers as it uses host OS ones . No risk to mess partitions, shared the same files and storage, and it is easy to do it (just Google it).

I did the clean install and everything works well, thank you for your tips.

But currently is one thing with I'm fighting for.
When I plug the headphones, some strange noise (which takes about 5 seconds) could be hear everytime when some app/process/... plays some sound. Then, it's quiet. But e.g. when I play some music and than stopped it, for the next 5 seconds I hear some noise from my headphones. I tried several realtek drivers (and those from asus download center), different headphones, but nothing helps..
Do you guys register the same issue?

I see Long time no post here - I am not sure which is now the active post to use ( the other "General UX302" or this one)... But let me just post here my experience after my first Weekend with the UX302LG.

And upfront... I really love it ! ;)

I had many Laptops during the last 15 years .... and the last one was an HP Envy 14 Spectre Ultrabook.

Now coming form the Envy 14 HP... with which I was in general really happy to .. WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT ! ;)

First of all... the build Quality of the Zenbook - all is strong, nothing bends, nothing makes noise when handling with the machine !

I also have that light bleeding during the boot up but as many other posted as well I do not recognize it during usage , even not with a black Desktop wallpaper.

With the Keyboard I seem to be lucky all is straight and the light is fine , too.

The Screen is really super sharp, good Colors and the brightness is ok (could be a bit more for outside usage)

The Performance is just impressing.... I can run the mid range games I want to Play when I travel very well ( World of Tanks , Portal 2 on 60 FPS)
..and that while this Thing is so thin and light ! Still WOW !

What is not working (at least so far) or what is negative:

    1) This stupid Power on/off button - I wrote this text already to half then accidentially hit this button again ... GRRRRR ! ;)

    2) The Power 4 Gear / Intsant ON .
Maybe ist me - but I dont get along with it - Is for Isntant ON a Software needed ? Is it included in the Power4Gear Thing ? Will I "loose" it when I uninstall the P4G ?

Everything else is or I got it running. But I look FWD to a clean W8.1 Installation once I saved some Money to get a 512GB SSD.....

So far just some experience from a ne happy Zenbook user ;)
If someone has some hints/explanations for the P4G / Instant ON so that I understand it ...welcomed ;)

So - Weekend over.... have a good week
    Greetz

I don't own this anymore but when I did, I deleted p4g. Worthless imo and it seemed have a mind its own. I also choose to disable instant on since I used a ssd instead. I don't think you need both to operate together. As for the power button, do yourself a favor and disable it from putting your computer to sleep by changing it on all of the power plans. If you need it to sleep, shut the lid or right click the Windows icon and hit sleep.

Enjoy your laptop. I can say without hesitation that I regret selling it. I haven't found a decent replacement since.

    Hi Xentar712,

thx for the feedback - yes for the Power Button I will do as you suggest - makes sense ! ;)
Mhh... P4G I agree but I think I may then have not understood this Isntant ON - why do you think with and SSD it is not needed ?
I thought this Instant ON means that the Laptop wakes up from sleep in under 2 seconds or the second option , that you can choose is that the sleep funktion goes into " deep sleep" and so the Power lasts 10 days in this deep sleep.... ? And this is something which I really want to have if possible.

With a ssd, you wake up from sleep really fast anyways. Instant on might buy you a second, if that - I haven't actually tested. To me, it's not worth it to have it on if it doesn't do a whole lot. I'm guessing it uses either extra memory or hard drive space in order to function.

I never make manual ones, I just adjust the already existing ones. For high performance, I make sure minimum CPU processor is always 100%, for Balanced, it's 5% on battery and 100% on power. For power saver, I turn the maximum CPU speed to 95% which in most cases disables turbo-boost. Adaptive brightness is always off for me and the power button is set to off for all power plans. Basically I make balanced and high performance the same when on power because there's no reason not to. There's really not much more to it after that. I use high performance for gaming and balanced for everything else. Power saver only gets used if I'm on a plane or know I'll be without power for a long time.

Hello, after now two wwek intense testing I am still very very happy with my 302LG. The games I sometimes want to Play are running ok -> good (WOT, C&C, Grid 2) They all run smoothly , at least on low Details but with FHD.

The Screen is really nice and also the touch Option with W8 really makes fun (Nothing you really Need - but for some of the W8 Apps - nice to handle with it.

I have not noticed any realy drawback of this machine at all !

I have tesetd all the Asus "Software" and can also confirm - all not needed and more or less useless.

In Terms of Tools for Windows (8).... What are you using / what can you suggest ?

I of course like to have some control so I use
HWINFO and Rainmeter for System control

    Anything you can suggest ?

    Thx

Hello, I just discovered something .... Once I Play games (like WOT) with AC plugged in I get 60FPS all fine...but once I want to Play them on batterey something cuts the Performance and I only come to whatever 45 FPS - so significant drop..... but strangely I use High Performance power plan with EVERYTHING set to max Performance also on battery.... ?

Anyone any Idea..... ? Is there anywhere the Nvidia Settings something in Addition to the Windows Power Plans ? could not find anything...

    Thx

It's by design. Most dedicated gpus cant run at full power while on battery. Higher end gpus experience more of a drop. The reasoning is because batteries can't handle that much of a drain without causing long term damage. Also, your battery life would be crap if your gpu were at full power. My guess is it would be about 30-40 minutes

You could always make your own. I don't know what kind of shops you have in Germany but in the US, we have hobby shops for electronics where you can get universal AC/DC adapters where you can adjust voltage. They usually come with different tips as well.

    Hey everyone !

I got a small problem on my ux302lg : since last monday, I can't increase or decrease brightness anymore, whether I press FN+F5/F6 (th cursor appears but doesn't move) or go into the Windows 8.1 settings in the charm bar (the cursor goes up and down but nothing changes).
When I press FN+Q, the keyboard gets lit but brightness stays the same.
Whether I'm on battery or plugged in.
Anybody has a solution for me ? Maybe a driver I need to reinstall / update ?

    Thanks in advance ! ;-)

Yeah, I reboot at least once a day.
The auto brightness is set by pressing FN+Q, right , That doesn't change anything, sadly, it just lits the keyboard. :(-

I don't have this unit anymore so I'm not sure what fn q does. That might control keyboard backlight though, which is different. Go into advanced power plan options and see if adaptive brightness is enabled.

    Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering if I factory reset my zenbook will the other programs, drivers and apps that are pre-installed from factory will also be installed again as well?

and, ever since it doesn't come with any factory disc, do I need to burn one in order to finish the process?

    Thanks in advance!

Yes, it'll be just like it was when you bought it. No disc is needed assuming you didn't damage or remove the recovery partition

Anyone try hooking up a 4K monitor at 60Hz yet? I'm not able to get 3840 x 2160 to run at anything besides 30Hz.

I tried disabling the integrated Intel GPU in Device Manager but all I get is a black and white screen on my laptop. The Nvidia GPU isn't active. I even went into the BIOS but there's no option to disable it there either.

I don't have this machine anymore but I've loaded Windows 10 onto an ivy bridge and a Haswell machine and the Win8 drivers worked just fine. I also did a Broadwell machine but the graphics card driver was a little challenging to get right. It also worked in the end. You should be fine. My advice would be to install from the desktop so it will give you the option to revert back to Windows 8 in the future. If you boot from the install CD, you won't get that option(or at least I couldn't find it).

    Hi,

so i found this topic after wanting to upgrade my ux302lg with an SSD.
I bought the 128GB mini mSata from MyDigitalSSD and switched it with the original sandisk ssd.

i would like to install windows 8 on to use it as my primary drive, and leave the 750GB HDD for storage.
    but i have a problem.

the ssd is recognized by the bios, i can copy files onto it and use it as a normal drive.
but it wont show up in the bios boot order! its just not there.

how do you put it in first place on boot priority?

    tnx

You can't boot from it unless it detects a Windows boot partition on it. You have to either clone Windows onto it or do a fresh install to it

    that's my intention.
i want to do a fresh install on the SSD, but at the same time format my HDD.

you say that after the fresh install on the SSD it will boot automatically from it? cuse it wont have the boot partition on the HDD anymore?

i have already prepared a Win8 installation dok.
as far as i know my win8 activation key is stored in the bios, will it be activated automatically when i do the fresh install?

    Tnx

It'll be activated automatically. If you install it on the msata, you're pc will detect it there and boot from it automatically. But if the original partition also still exists, it'll boot from that unless you change it in the bios. But you can't change it in the bios until after you install it.

I would install the OS with only the SSD in it to ensure the boot partition goes onto it, otherwise the HDD will be required to boot.

    Hi folks.

I've been using my UX302LG for approximately half a year.
At first I installed Win7 Pro on it and was more or less satisfied.

A month ago I installed Win 8.1 on it and stumbled upon USB 3.0 issue.
I frequently use external storage devices (SSD, USB 3.0 ones). They run without any issues from the right side USB 3.0 (charged). As soon as I try to use left side USB 3.0 ports they won't run. In fact my ultrabook recognizes that something is inserted into USB but when it starts to install the driver the device "drops" as if I unplugged it. Immediately after that it reconnects and everything starts all over again (installing drivers -> device drops -> reconnects).

Same thing happens with my USB-To-Lan adapter.
Prior to Win8.1 upgrade everything worked fine.

I've heard something about Microsoft Win8.1 enforcing its own USB3.0 drivers on laptops even though Intel ones should work better? - can someone comment on that?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

I'm about to upgrade my Zenbook, with 64+256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM. But I can't find anywhere an information how to disable the battery before upgrade? Can anyone help?

    Thank in advance

I never disable my battery for upgrades like that. I'm sure it's just a small connector you can just unplug though.

Unfortunately my motherboard died when I tried to upgrade without disabling the battery. Everything was fine I changed the ram and msata SSD, but after I disassembled the battery and changed the HDD, computer didn't wanted to turn on. Computer was bought as refubrished but I don't think that caused the problem.
    I was using this movie

Motherboard is being changed to new one and I don't want to make this mistake again.

I will get my zen back in 2 days, where to look for this connector? I made few photos of motherboard and I can't find it.

Mine ux302lg just got back from the repair. Now i have new motherboard with Core i7 and 4Gb of ram :) And I'm after my upgrade. I used 8GB crucial memory and Crucial SSD MX100 256GB 2,5" so I confirm that they are working. Also I used KINGSPEC MSATA HALF SIZE SSD 64GB SATA III to upgrade small SSD.

Almost all notebooks have no tweaking options in the bios, try intel XTU.
