Interesting, mine always whines, no matter the load. Yeah, it's not super loud or anything, but for me who often use the laptop in quiet environments it can get annoying. at first bootup, I thought they sent me one with a hard drive.. Can still hear it slightly when sitting outside where the ambient noise is relatively high compared to almost nothing inside. Shame that few cares to do anything about this.

I have the 4K matte version with 8GB RAM. On the site I bought it, it does say 1x8GB which would indicate one 8GB soldered and one slot for expansion. I haven't confirmed this myself though.

I've read and feared about people having "mustard" yellows on the UX501JW. I can happily report that my yellows look great. Personally I think the display is a little too warm for my taste(very similar to the Moto X Style). Note that this is only really noticable when comparing side by side. The blacks aren't really that great but other than that I was pleasantly surprised, the colors pop and look nicer than on my Acer XB270HU. Slight backlight bleed on top corners, nothing I'd be concerned about.

Outdoor use on sunny days is possible when browsing white pages, the brightness is where it's lacking, the matte screen takes the experence from unusable to mediocre i'd say. Using it indoors I've had no problems with the brightness and it does get dim enough without 3rd party software to be used in a completely dark room and there's no noticable flickering.

    Hi Calgor,

For my point of view, the uHD matte screen is great, no problem at all to use it in outdoors. Still no luck with my 950 Pro 256 GB. I've returned the SSD to the seller.

    Thanks Kokonos and Biao.

Seems like the Australian version should be good enough as long as it can do at least 16GB RAM (will ask Asus again); will forego the touchscreen as non-essential.

Regarding why your 256GB 950 Pro did not work, specifically for the VW model, I found someone with the sister model G501VW had the exact same symptoms as yourself with the same SSD and he found a solution (creating a Windows UEFI on a USB stick and doing a fresh install of Windows 10 on the SSD):
    https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?84562-Samsung-950-pro-M-2-SSD-Cannot-install-on-G501VW

I know you returned your SSD but maybe if someone else is having problems on the UX501VW they could give that a try.

YES! This exactly has been what I have been asking about for so long. All these others laptops I see, that window maximizing is butter smooth. No stutter at all. But this laptop we have, which is supposed to be so powerful, stutters to maximize a full screen window? WTF intel?

It really looks like there is no solution to this.

Any solution to this? Did you find a way to get the maximizing animations to be 60 fps?

No real solution, It's smooth when running at 1080p so there's definitely some optimization that needs to be done here unless someone with a 4K screen and a powerful desktop graphics card experience the same issue. Never had issues with 1440p but that's quite far from 4K.

If you're ever planning on getting an eGPU than that should solve the issue when stationary(assuming poor optimization is the root).

What is more concering is the odd performance issues and poor gpu utilization that I get whenever I'm using native res.

Nope, but one potential issue is throttling. For some reason the 960m has a what appears to be locked temp limit at 80 degrees C. Even though the CPU is undervolted(which made a significant difference) I can still see slight throttling at stock speeds on my ux501vw. The 965m draws 10 W more so you'll probably be forced to underclock the CPU to lower the load on the cooling system which they share. Assuming the 965m has the same temp limit.

Even just increaing it to 85 would of made a

Play games? Yes, you still get the same functionality and won't have any problems using the dedicated GPU for games. I'm still having some odd inconsistencies with input lag though. first I was getting 110ms then 34ms, 85ms and finally now about 50ms. But it should work as long as you're not playing games where reaction time is key. The lid does not prevent airflow in any way when it's closed, very nice when using a wireless keyboard/controller as it dampens the noise somewhat.

I think all VW/Skylake models have USB C. 4K is very nice when it works but there's a lot of problems which is why I can't really recommend it, unless you can live with fiddling and tinkering around those issues.

Weird that the 1080p model isn't cheaper.

There's a noticable difference but since it should throttle more, that difference might not be that noticable anymore.

Otherwise just google "965m vs 960m"

Personally I'll just get an external graphics enclosure down the line and rely on replacabe desktop graphics cards for any future games.

Have a UX501VW on order and would like to know if anyone has used some of the newer 10Gbs capable external SSD's? Plan is to do photo and video editing and any suggestions for an external 4k display would be appreciated.

I have the Asus Zenbook UX501VW-FI020T. It's one of the variants with only one M.2 SATA3 drive.

I recently installed BIOS version 207. But there is still no nvme option in the BIOS. Will this option only show up after inserting an nvme drive?

Yes. You need to install an NVMe SSD for the NVMe option to show in the bios. My Asus Zenbook UX501VW only came with a M.2 SATA3. I put the M.2 Samsung SM951 NVMe SSD and it was immediately recognized. The NVMe option appeared in the bios. There's no doubt the OEM M.2 Samsung SM951 NVMe SSD works, but seems that so far nobody got the Samsung 950 Pro M.2 NVMe SSD to work.

On a separate note, what kind of semi-permanent glue do they use on the rubber boots underneath the Asus Zenbook UX501VW? One of my rubber boots doesn't have any glue and keeps falling off.

you can use sekisui double sided thermal tape. it's very thin, and used to stick heatsinks, but is removable, and it's very strong.

    This should also work.

if you connect a monitor to hdmi port, and another to miniDP, does your triple display configuration run properly without blinking or glitches?

that unit already sold out on that sites, the rest was just the ROG familly like you says, but it has skylake refresh now, but when i research, that unit with 4k screen it has no different price with FHD(512SSD, 6cellBattery) lol

I just had to open asus smart gesture and apply the right settings again and it worked. Maybe this was not an issue because of bios 207, even though it occured just right after installing it and never had happened before.

Does anyone know how to adjust the palm check threshold on Windows 10? I was having an issue where the mouse would sometimes give a delayed response because it would think that a finger motion was actually my palm and found this response, however, I can't seem to find this menu option on my Zenbook Pro.

I have the VW, not JW but I've lately been getting occasional flickering/artifacts/second display losing signal when connected via HDMI.

Edit: You know what, never mind. I've been having my phone on the left side, near the display cable. It can be quite sensitive, especially if the cable run is long. For instance if I run my 1440p monitor at 144hz it's almost impossible to avoid intermittent interference no matter where I place my phone in the room.

I will be able to try out the 3 screen configurations next week once I get my monitors in one place.

Meanwhile, there is a minor problem that gets quite irritating after awhile. The screen will hang momentarily and afterwards the error will show, "Windows (8.1) HD Display driver has stopped responding and has restarted" Somewhere along those lines. My computer is a JW running on Windows 10 and I can't seem to find any Integrated Graphics Display driver for the JW for Windows 10..

I have exactly the same problem - did you contact ASUS support for this?

Perhaps interesting observation - CHROME shows 4K Videos without flickering

Up to recently, I was not able not see 4K Youtube Videos in Fullscreen Modus.
Firefox and Chrome Browser started flickering.

Since the most current version of Chrome (50.0.2661.94) it seems to be fixed - Chrome plays 4K Youtube AND 4K Vimeos in Fullscreen Modus.
    Firefox is still not working.

on my VW, I installed the beta driver from Intel directly.

it's still buggy, but at least you can update.

I get the Intel driver crash error sometimes when it is struggling to detect 2 external monitors simultaneously.

    Yeah, hdmi seems very sensitive.
I had a second monitor interfere with the first monitor hdmi, made it flicker once, even though the second monitor was unplugged.

Yep, but my other monitor was connected via displayport to my desktop, so it's not just HDMI. The only solution was to use a shorter cable, in my case a 1.5 meter.

The M.2 Samsung 950 Pro NVMe SSD works!

I got the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501VW that came with the M.2 SATA3 SSD. From my earlier posts in this thread, I've established that the M.2 Samsung SM951 NVMe is fully recognized out of the box by the bios.

Now, I wanted to try the M.2 Samsung 950 Pro NVMe. As those before me have mentioned, I've observed that the 950 Pro is not recognized at all by the bios. But, I took it one step further. Out of curiosity, I wanted to see if Windows 10 setup could somehow still see the 950 Pro. Sure enough, Windows 10 setup fully sees the 950 Pro, at least if Windows 10 setup is booted into in UEFI mode.

I used Rufus to prepare a Windows 10 setup thumbdrive, formatted FAT32, so I could boot UEFI into it.

At the conclusion of the setup, Windows 10 setup booted in UEFI mode will create a "Windows Boot Manager" entry. Strangely, the bios still doesn't see the 950 Pro, but it does see that "Windows Boot Manager" entry. That's enough to make Windows 10 boot just fine.

However, I didn't proceed that way. I didn't want to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch, along with all the programs. I used Paragon Hard Disk Manager 15 Suite to create a disk image of my original Samsung SM951 NVMe SSD. Paragon Hard Disk Manager Suite comes with its own Linux based Boot Media environment that I put on a thumbdrive. So, I didn't need to use Windows at all to create and backup a disk image of the Samsung SM951 to an external 1TB drive. Interesting here too, the Paragon Boot Media booted into in UEFI mode could see the 950 Pro fine.

After putting in the 950 Pro, I booted again into the Paragon Boot Media. This time to restore the saved SM951 SSD disk image onto the 950 Pro. Anytime you clone a GPT/UEFI disk, all the partition UUID change. It is necessary to correct the "Windows Boot Manager" entry on the target disk. Thankfully, the Paragon Boot Media does have a Boot Corrector tool specifically for that. It edits and fixes the "Windows Boot Manager" entry to point to the correct partition UUIDs.

I also tried an Ubuntu 15.10 live thumbdrive. Here again, after booting in UEFI mode into the Ubuntu thumbdrive, Ubuntu sees the 950 Pro fine. Everything is surprisingly quiet in Ubuntu. Not the slightest buzzing or coil whine, even when bringing my ear to the keyboard.

In the end, what's really happening, it's just the bios that doesn't see the 950 pro. Windows 10, Ubuntu 15.10 and Paragon Boot Media all see the 950 Pro fine, provided they were booted into in UEFI mode.

Oh by the way, I just updated to bios 207. The bios still doesn't see the 950 Pro. However, Windows 10, Ubuntu, Paragon Boot Media all still see it fine. It's a strange bug. I will notify Asus.

Great to hear! Planning on getting one of those once the 1TB model is released.

Are you saying that you get buzzing/coil whine in W10 and not in Ubuntu?

Great news! I wonder did you try disabling Secure Boot and enabling Launch CSM in the BIOS? I could only see a particular bootable external CD in the BIOS after I did that (I recently got the same UX501VW as yourself). Although I would have thought that wouldn't be needed given the SM951 showed up. I'm new to UEFI so just throwing it out there.

In Windows 10, the buzzing/coil whine is there, but very faint. I have to be in a very quiet room and bring my ear to the keyboard to hear it. In Ubuntu, it's completely dead quiet. Only the faint fan noise can be heard.

Correct. In the bios, I disabled Secure Boot and Fast Boot. When booting other operating systems, those 2 can interfere. I also enabled Launch Compatibility Support Module (CSM).

Weird, yet interesting, I'll look into this.

Still considering non conductive two part epoxy down the road..
