I was able to get in touch with a ux501 HD owner and he was kind enough to share his experience and photos regarding the yellow.
The keyboard flex exists but it is not as exaggerated as some ppl make it seem here.
I personally saw the pics of yellows and NO it is not the mustard green tinge.
A lot of posts on this thread seem to be very critical of this notebook. Those of you complaining of the build quality by comparing it with a mac should know better. You want better build ? Get the mac ! Which is obviously more costly than this and thats what you get when you pay more....better build quality.
Its not like the build quality is complete rubbish. Ppl here are just exagerrating things.

From what I read, the mustard green tinge comes with Samsung 4k panel, not with 1080p FHD panel. The same problem occurs with other laptops that uses the same panel as well like Y50 and GS60, for example: link

And here in comment section people have talked about the panel: link

Do an internet search on "Staingate". Looks like Apple may have a bit of a problem coming up...

Interesting read. As a concurrent macbook owner of 3-4 years that gives me another reason to move back to windows-based laptop for my next purchase.

I've not owned a Mac... they appear to be well integrated, maybe too well integrated; you cannot do anything with them other than compute... I want something I can 'tinker' with. My son worked as a senior Apple tekkie and said that most of the Apple tekkies have PC's at home, for that very reason.

I work in a design-related industry and mac is stereotypically seen more as the choice for designers (whether it is accurate or not), but this is off-topic.

I took these with my Note 3 camera. The colors are very vibrant. It's a treat to watch the colors and pictures on this laptop's screen. I haven't seen a better screen yet.

I've had no issues with the laptop so far. I'm only planning to add an SSD drive to my system for more and faster storage. Other than that, I dont see how it can be improved in any way.

and for the mac promoters here, the laptop build is excellent. Plus it comes with windows eco system. Its the best of both worlds. there is simply no comparison!

    1. The yellow on your screen is off, just like this MSI GE62-2QE example with 4k screen here.

    2. If you think I'm a mac promoter (since you used plural, I assume you mean multiple people), then you are quoting me out of context. This laptop with FHD screen is a very good candidate for my next purchase.

I dont know man. The yellow looks good to my eyes viewing it from my note 3 too. But looks a bit darker on my ipad. Maybe you are a graphic designer or something who can tell diffrent shades accurately. Atleast its not the ugly mustard yellow like that on the lenovo. I can make that out !

Whats the battery life like ? None on the thread mentioned this about the hd model.

And are you sure an ssd can be installed in this model ?

Heavy browsing (chrome 64bit 6-15 tabs open) + music: 3 hrs

    mild usage (movies/ms excel/word etc) : 4-5 hrs.

all above at middle level brightness. I really wish the battery were 96whr in this version but i think then there wouldnt be any space for 1tb hdd.

You are right, I may have jumped to conclusion. The lightning in his room may be the reason why his yellow appears to be different. It would be more accurate if he has two screens side by side for comparison.

Oh that sucks. An FHD version with 512gb of SSD and 96whr would be fantastic then.

    Hey Khanis12,

Where did you get your FHD version of this laptop? I really don't care for the 4k version, nor the touch, but I cannot find the FHD anywhere.

    Thanks.

As far as I'm aware, on the 4k model there are two ram slots. Out of which only one is "user replaceable" .So it's probably two 8 gig slots. May be Similar on fhd model.

You won't get a cd since this notebook doesn't have cd/dvd drive.
About your serial number, you can get it though some software o don't remember exactly. Jusy google it. It's actually stored on your laptop itself ...the software/code just pulls it out and displays it.

I read online that Lenovo y50-70 touchpad sucks... but maybe they fixed it. Anyway 16gb ram, 960m is pretty good (8gb ssd + 1 tb hhd?). You should check battery life too

The reason that I exclude laptop with less than 16gb of ram is because 8GB/12GB are not enough for me... As programmer I need a lot of thing opens (IDE, VMs, Chrome etc.) and my current pc with 8gb of ram just can't handle it. Maybe for a "normal" user 8GB are OK but this laptop is for "PRO"

Hmm...8gb is good enough to run IDE's , VM simultaneously. ..maybe you should get rid of the bloatware , unnecessary running processes .
Coming from from a programmer too.
Yeah about the lenovo, I too wasn't impressed with the touchpad. Also the laptops build is not that great.

Initially, the price was 2000 US$ all of a sudden, they dropped over 400US$ out of it. It seems like a promotional laptop for maybe the next big thing.

Yeah in that case go with the 16gb model. But better to go with a laptop upgradeable to 32gb (if there is one) in the future as even 16 might seem less for your usage after sometime.

Yeah. Its a great offer. If I hadnt bought this I might've considered it.

However, I also bought this machine for the looks. I've always had ugly looking laptops :p and i wanted something pretty and metallic looking.

Same. I ditched the lenovo for the ux501 considering the looks. The lenovo looks like a complete gaming machine. Where as the asus has a professionally look to it.

    Hi, guys.

I'm thinking of buying a UX501JW DN233H. It has the larger battery, a 256GB SSD, and the FHD (ie non-4k) panel. I have a couple of questions I hope you could answer for me, though.

    1) The SSD is quite small. Is it possible to replace it or add an additional one (or both)? Some reviews say there is an m2 slot, but I'm not sure if the current SSD is using it or if it is free to be used for a second SSD. I also read that the larger battery may impact on the installation of an additional HDD.

    2) Does the FHD panel (non 4k) suffer from that infamous yellowing problem?

    3) Is all the RAM soldered on or just half? 8GB is fine but an option for 12 would be welcome.

Thanks very much for any replies--I appreciate it very much.

Does anybody have experience using Lightroom 5 or CC on the 4k model?

It's been awfully slow and laggy for me... The sliders and brush lag pretty badly. It is because of the 4k display?

    1) I think the battery is large and it covers the 2.5HDD space. Still not a 100% sure
    2) FHD panel doesnt have the yellow problem.
    3) Half of the RAM is soldered. if its 16, 8GB is soldered. Mine is total 8GB, so 4GB is soldered.

In NVIDIA control panel, set both applications to use the dedicated graphics card. It could be because they are using integrated one.

I just read the new UX501 w/ FHD manufactured in June may come with a slightly worse display (Samsung LTN156HL01-102 --> LG LP156WF6-SPB1), to balance out with the cost of upgrading to a slightly better network adapter. If anyone is as picky as I am with display, this is something to pay attention to.

Thanks so much for the advice everyone. I went ahead and bought it, and thanks to some lucky timing got a further $300 off. After two successive faulty 'refurbished' laptops I'm looking forward to a (hopefully) functioning laptop. :)

reviews covers good ground (still a bit distressed that sRGB comes up as 90% -- no reviews so far have been able to prove ASUS's claim to colour gamut), but was wondering what they were listening to when they wrote --

Exceptional sound quality is at hand. Even under subjective hearing the loudspeakers sound really good with clear highs and full lows. It’s not a surprise, given the fact that the speakers are made by Bang & Olufsen

-- which is contrary to every other review out there.
