My receiver has several HDMI inputs. I connect all devices to the receiver, and then my projector (Or any display device) connect to the HDMI output on the receiver. That means you need to have adequate number of HDMI cables for inputs/outputs or, I have to disconnect devices to use the same cable for another device. HDMI cables are cheap these days (Ebay is probably your friend).

If you just need one single HDMI splitter, you may find cheaper options on Ebay. The Monoprice one is more like a full fledged HUB.

    1. Can't answer yet since I haven't tried dumping heavy tasks on the laptop yet (I have a full fledged desktop for heavy tasks).
    2. You need a slim hard drive (7mm thick). After you install the hard drive, you have two options: either doing a clone or, a fresh install. If doing a clone, you need to close the entire hard drive with all its partitions into the new drive (Not just the C drive) and not every cloning software can do this properly. I went for a fresh install which has its own procedure and steps which are explained in this thread before (go through the previous messages to find them).
    3. The battery life on mine is pretty standard, nothing spectacular nor bad.

Yea, that would work. However, I checked and my receiver doesn't have HDMI input. It's from around 2007 and just a Pioneer set from Costco, nothing high end.

    Hi everyone,
I had a problem with my asus UX32VD that I was unable to recover it from the recovery partition and had to install a windows manually.
But now i would like to recover the PC as it came out of factory. Is the anyway I can get a recovery disk for this?

Give us some more details on what happens when you try? Did you erase the recovery partition on the harddrive?

I just splurged on the Samsung 840 Pro 256GB :D Took me a couple days to finally press the order button.

Right now I'm running Windows on the iSSD ( C: ) with most programs installed onto the spinning hard drive ( D: ). How would you guys recommend imaging these two drives onto the new one? I'd really like to _not_ start fresh. I only got the laptop a couple weeks ago and it took me about a week to get everything configured how I wanted it.

I know the new Samsung drive comes with software to migrate data but I heard it only works for Samsung -> Samsung drives or something? Plus the fact that I've got programs installed over two partitions right now. Also there's the fact that the iSSD has been converted to NTFS while the spinning harddrive was left "GPT", whatever that really means.

thanks for all your guys' feedback. i may just go with the toshiba r930, since i could put in any 2.5" drive i would like and battery life would still be about the same. but i'm still on the fence

Getting a UX32VD has a lot to do with paying for the sexyness factor. I find that (with upgrades) it is the slimmest sexiest of the relatively powerful laptops, with the best screen.

    Hi!

Does enyone now a suitable cooling pad for the ux32vd? A coolingpad which has the same portability and is as neat and slick as the notebook? All the ones I´ve found is either heavy or to big.

To you with internetconnection problems. There are FAQ´s at asus homepage how to fix the problem. If it doesnt work then send it for repair. ( I did and they changed the card and the screen, think they changed the screen because of the antenna in the screen.) Now it works fine, remember tho that the internetcard is crap so you wont get to 300 mbit/s. Around 54 mbit/s is normal and can be quite unstable but the signal strenght should be on par with other computers. Hope it helps!

    cheers!

Hey guys, I've been thinking about buying this laptop but there's something that stops me from doing it. What kind of temperatures do you experience while gaming and playing HD videos? Is it too hot? Also, is the fan too loud when it starts to kick in?

I'm planing to use it at the library while watching some HD videos from Youtube. I don't want to bother anyone with the noise. I want to know if the noise and temperature are as bad as some reviewers make it seem. Thank you.

Temperatures when gaming / benching do get high, up to about 88C on the GPU and 82C or so on the CPU, and that's allowing it enough ventilation at room temperature (not wrapped in blankets). Eventually I'll repaste the CPU and GPU and that should drop things a few degrees.

Externally, the laptop does not get too hot to the touch on top. On the bottom I don't really know cause I don't hold it in my lap when it's stressed. I'm also impressed how quickly the laptop cools down once the stress is gone. In 30 seconds it's back to low temperatures.

The fan noise is definitely not loud at slow speeds. At low speeds (up to around 65C CPU), the fans are barely audible. You can feel it in the body of the laptop more than hear it.

At max (when it's hot, 70C CPU+) you can hear it, but it's certainly not too loud! I actually really like the noise, gradually goes up in RPM like a jet :)

Does the fan turn on frequently (while playing HD video or videogames)? Also, http://tinyurl.com/b5bqxsm http://tinyurl.com/aljasa5 are those two the right ones for the laptop? Thank you.

Like I said, when they just "turn on' you won't hear it. HD video it doesn't get hot enough that they have to go to high speed. I ahd to take my old laptop out of the room to hear for sure when the fans are on, that's how quiet they are.

When gaming, yes you'll hear them come on, and they stay on, so it's constant.

That harddrive (or the Pro version) will work perfectly. Not sure on the RAM, I always forget exactly, but it's been said 50x in this thread before so just search.

I have the half terabyte ssd and the crucial ram and I've only heard the fan once. I'm not a heavy gamer, but I play Microsoft Flight pretty frequently at maximum detail and have never had a noise issue. Yes it does get hot on the bottom, but it's fine on a desk.

Ever going to tell us how you've managed to do that??
I would really like to give it a shot especially since it apparently lets you change thermal settings as well.

:O Yes that would be nice to set up the fans how we want...

I actually came to report something strange with the fans. You guys have probably heard of this program called "ThrottleStop". It gives you a little more control on the dynamic use of the CPU, and preventing throttling, among other things. I just use it to disable Turbo on battery and reduce the max frequency a little. (With Windows' CPU management in the power options, you can set a "max % for cpu" but it doesn't get rid of turbo so it's kind of useless, CPU still ramps up to top frequencies (and probably less of the in between ones if you reduced yours down from 100%)).

You've also heard of people complaining of their fans going on, off, on, off a lot in succession. I never had a problem with this but last night I was playing with ThrottleStop for hours and I noticed that if I tick "GPU monitoring" in settings, the fans spin up, spin down, spin up, spin down at about 2 second intervals. They don't get loud/fast or anytihng, but if you put your ear up to the laptop you can hear this. Once I disabled the option the fans are fine.

So it's interesting that 1) software can affect our fans and 2) maybe people didn't realize this is why their fans are acting up. I'm going to try and remember to post this in the ThrottleStop thread as well.

hey guys, is the max output from the hdmi 1.4 on the ux32vd 1080p? From what I have read 1.4 can go to 2k but I might be wrong. I am in the market for a new monitor and would like to take advantage of one of the new 27 inchers out there that take the resolution above 1080p. Thanks!

A lot of people have had issues driving high res displays from an HDMI port even if it's supposed to be 1.4 so I would test if you can before buying.

I just installed my new SSD. I cloned drive C onto it which worked fine. However, I had installed programs on D: (the 500GB drive). Is there any way to move these cleanly back onto C now that there's room and make them work again? They are all pointing to the old D which is now out of the computer. But I can move the folders over to C manually...

Other option is clean up the registry and reinstall them... but I don't even know how clean that will be.

Need some help with my UX32VD!!

Ive owned this computer for around 7 months. I have upgraded to SSD and 10gb of ram. I used to play a number of games, but have since stopped.

A few months ago I installed windows 8. This was a mission, but I have made sure to keep my drivers and BIOS up to date. I had not noticed any performance issues. Recently I decided to play some Counterstrike Source and the graphics performance was horrible. I ran 3DMark 11 and scored P789, Also ran using Nvidia GPU (not pictured) and got a P930.

    What could be the issue?

    Thanks

    Hi guys,

Today I've read the following article: 15-Inch Retina MacBook Pro Users Experiencing Fan Issues Related to SanDisk SSDs? - MacRumors Forums
It's about the current Macbook Pro retina's fan problems; the fans suddenly kick in at almost full speed and stop after a minute or so. Now, what does that have to do with the UX32vd?
The problems with the Macbook Pro started since Apple ships them with a Scandisk SSD in stead of samsung. And what SSD does Asus use in the UX3vd? Right; Scandisk!

Since Asus didn't fix the fan issues of the UX32vd yet, it might be related?
    Any thoughts?

Hi all, I have had my UX32VD-DH71-CA since November 2012 and had done the Corsair Vengence 8GB RAM upgrade and Samsung 840 PRO SSD upgrade almost immediately. I just noticed this week that I only have 2GB of RAM installed now. I tried to reseat the Corsair RAM and then even went back to the original 4GB RAM and no joy. Has anyone experienced or heard of anything like this? I'm taking it back to the store where I got it since they have a 1 Year warranty; but I suspect it will be going back to Asus for refurb. I have seen RAM fail; but not on the mobo side. Anyways, thanks for any input.

Hey guys, I'm in Europe (Portugal) and looking to purchase the UX32VD. The thing is, I can't find the model that has the i7, full 1080p display and 32GB SSD. What is the model number for this particular configuration? Did Asus stop producing them? I can find one with nearly the same specs, but a 24SSD instead, which would prevent me from installing Windows 7 on it.

Suggestions? I've been looking for a light gaming ultrabook and this thing seemed like a godsend until I found myself unable to find it!

    Thanks

Yes the 32GB version was an early batch. Hard to find now. I ran windows 7 on the internal 24GB for a couple weeks but it's a pain to keep the space free and you end up installing most of your programs on the spinning hard drive anyway. Just get it and upgrade to a real ssd.

Thanks for replying Flav. How much do you reckon that upgrade would cost? And do you have any idea where I could get it in Europe? It's proving hard to find, almost like Asus doesn't want to make a sale. It's about 1100€, right?

I don't think they use the 32GB SSD anymore. I am almost sure of it. I highly suggest you just buy a "real" SSD.

Edit: Well I wait too long to post and look? I agree with above.

Can't say in Europe but I bought a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro for ~$260CDN after taxes.

The Samsung 840 Pro series is currently considered the best performing and all around best SSD. But some would argue you wouldn't tell the difference for "everyday computing" if you went with a cheaper option ($150-200) such as the Samsung 840 (non pro) or others.

Can you maybe get the actual laptop itself from amazon.com?

Well it isn't going to boot if you haven't installed windows on it! The fact that your USB key won't boot with it in there is weird. Are you sure you set the USB key as first boot priority?

The SSD was cloned before ... and also installed with windows 7 on it (installed on other pc) and still black screen...
If windows havnt installed on it it should not show just black screen... it should write something like "insert boot cd" or something like this ...
and the usb key is in first boot priority and it doesnt matters tryed to boot it with boot option screen and still same thing...

Thanks for the answers guys. Two more questions:

-The best price I found was in the US, from Amazon. Do you guys know if Asus offers worldwide warranty? If something goes wrong, would Asus' representation in Portugal help me?
-Is there another comparable notebook in market, at the moment, for this price range (900-1100)

    Thanks

Keep in mind that - afaik - if you import it to the EU you will still have to pay the local VAT (i.e. 23% in portugal) in addition to the listed price.

Mine has the Global warranty. I asume all do but confirm it.

I just looked on Amazon and the Asus UX32 I looked at does have the 1 year Global warranty.

Anyone own UX32VD-DS72? This has 2 128GB SSDs in RAID 0 and comes with 64-bit Win8. I hope with SSDs you'll get better battery life, and frankly for me I'd only need to upgrade the RAM if that's possible. There're no reviews out there, yet (Machine has hit the market (online only?) apparently in first week of Feb.). Strangely it's not there on any of ASUS' websites. Thus asking around here:
    a. How does it compare with other UX32VD models?
    b. Does dual SSD really give you better battery life?
    c. Is the RAM upgradable to 10GB total or more?
    d. How's the compatibility with Linux? Dual-boot or solely by itself. Willing to pay Windoze tax even if there's no recovery media available.
    e. How's ASUS' customer service? I'm in US. Can I buy additional warranty. I prefer 3 yrs worth.

    Thanks,
    TC
