I actually found the version without the dedicated graphics over at Best Buy, and poked and lifted it and typed for a while. I don't have the Macbook anymore, and it was one of the pre-aluminum ones in any event, so I still look with a little envy at getting a laptop with at least some aluminum elements to it. I think for the $850 that is being offered on Newegg right now, this seems to be a great deal. Thanks for the response.
One interesting thing is whether the graphics card is soldered onto the board or if it could be swapped for a better Nvidia, or if later on the screen could be swapped out.
-
I was thinking of getting this laptop but the one thing holding me back is the touchpad. I primarily want the laptop for typing in Word and I am concerned that the touchpad is going to be troublesome. Have any of you tried touchfreeze and does that solve palm resting/typing issues? I'd rather not carry a mouse around just to disable the touchpad for typing.

Has anyone tried running skyrim on this laptop? How about minecraft?

Pretty sure minecraft works extremely well... Skyrim I tried it, I think I was getting about 30 fps, not the best still very playable.

I have a few questions.
1. when you load the graphics card with something like furmark and load the cpu with prime95 what does the CPU/GPU temperature go to (use HWMonitor)?
2. how is the trackpad? good? crappy?
3. Battery life? over 8hrs?
I'm either going to buy this or a probook 4440s (with ivy bridge).
I'm mainly concerned about the temperature -
Has anyone on here had problems with these issues:
1) While in sleep mode, and you plug in the AC adapter, when you hit the power button to wake it, all indicator lights go off and it kind of just dies? (The only way to wake it up is hard battery reset/removal)
and
2) Wireless adapters don't work properly after the BIOS update. -
2. trackpad is good. multi gestures work well, but sometimes scrolling up and down can be hit or miss (scrolls too fast or too slow) takes time to get used to. and as mentioned the trackpad is not in the middle. so this can annoying when typing as your palm may click it accidentally and move your cursor somewhere else. either turn it off or get used to it.
3. i used it for 4 hrs and it read 50%.
2. i have yet to upgrade to bios401. what is "upgrade ME FW"?

Hey,
I was looking into this laptop and then decided to go with the Samsung Series 7 chronos 14inch, largely because of its 1600x900 screen and very flush hardware. However, I am having a couple issues with it, namely it can get kind of hot, especially on a lap, maybe problems with the wireless care (not sure if its that or my modem/router), and that the touchpad is not able to click when it is on an vertical angle or something is pressing underneath it (like a leg).
How is the touchpad on the Asus? does it still click fine on angles or with pressure underneath it? The Samsung uses an Elan touchpad that has gotten a lot of flack, does anyone have any real problems with this one? Also how is the screen despite the lower resolution?
I really like the samsung, but these frustrations just might be too annoying to deal with, and it seems like the asus has a better battery life too (plus removable!) thanks -
My asus only gets hot when I game on it for couple of hours. Touchpad works fine with pressure underneath or at an angle. Its odd that the samsung doesnt.
Screen is fine at the lower res, although I wish it was a bit better.still very useable. Using powersaver im getting 8-10 hrs of battery life

Does anybody who has opened the case know if there is a mSATA expansion port on this device for caching?

I have a dilemma to choose my first laptop between u47vc and s56cm.I like a laptop in a medium size (about 15.5 inch) but also thin and sleek.I love the feeling of power stuffed in a delicate body ).(i hate bulky case)
U47vc maybe has better build quality, compact, but rather small with me.I like the build, battery life(i prefer 8cells but according to the above reviews ,the battery is fairly good), backlit keyboard, dedicated graphic card for some light gaming, the silver aluminum cover.
S56 meets most of my aesthetics requirements except the large gap in the hinges, large screen bezel.S56 has a ssd, genuine window 7, better graphic (635m).But the battery is bad (4cells ), i think it lasts less than 4 hours.
Could u guys give me some additional choice in my budget? -
Hi, I'm from Poland and I'm new to this forum. Please be tolerant as far as my English knowledge is concerned
I have a serious dilemma. A month ago i was sure that for my studies I'm going to buy a model ASUS U44SG(with a standard hdd hard drive).
But unfortunately, this model probably is not longer on sale, so i took a look on this model: ASUS U47VC.
Can you please tell me, are there a lot of differences between this models? Apart from the overall look, in fact u44sg appeals more to me
I heard that in u44 the battery life is longer, there is a better camera and it weighs less, but i would really like to know from your point of view, which notebook is better and why.
Thanks in advance! -
Howdy,
First of all, I just set up this account because this is the only thread I've found discussing the u47 in any depth. I have a couple questions and the results might be of use to others with similar issues.
From Office Depot; RGR6 2840M
Bought the u47a yesterday. (Didnt see a thread just for that model..)
Love it.
Problem is when I plug in to AC power, the touchpad instantly becomes unresponsive. When moving the cursor it jitters/shakes/teleports within an inch of where it should be, and develops a self awareness about what to click on. I can simply leave my finger in one place and it will buzz around that spot on the screen.
Remove from AC, problem gone.
I saw someone else somewhere with this issue but didnt find a resolution.
Asus support says to install driver updates:
Touchpad driver
Chipset driver
Utilities\1.2.1 Power4Gear Hybrid Utility
Other\8.1.0.1263 Intel Management Engine
If no change, restore to factory settings.
If no change, RMA.
I already did the touchpad update, no change. will follow through with the rest tonight.
Anyone else with ideas or advice? -
Yeah so I've been pretty busy for university and encountered a problem... So when classes started, I thought to myself " hmm if the battery loses cycle when I plug it on AC all the time, why not take it out and charge it once 15 days? " .... So today I stick the battery back inside and bam it tells me " plugged in, not charging"
I googled the problem and it still is unresolved... I tried the open device manager, and uninstall " microsoft ACPI- complaint control battery method" , then restarted the PC and the problem unfortunately still persists...
Anyone shed some light on my poor 1 month old Asus? -
Yeah... I used the battery from 98% down to 73%, plugged it in and it started to charge. yay
-
--Update
Installed drivers, no change. Reimaged machine to factory settings and immediately gave up on it. Returned to Office Depot for another unit.
Booted up for the first time. On the very first page where you set the computer name/timezone etc, the cursor was spazzing out on AC power. Once again, unplug to battery and it immediately begins behaving. Plug in to wall again, and the cursor again becomes erratic. Reimaged to factory settings, and the issue persists.
Gave it the roommate check, so we can rule out me being crazy, shaky fingered, or misperceiving the cursor's behavior.
Maybe its a bad batch? Both were from the same store, but they are the only ones in town with this model in stock, and it's not available online anymore at the officedepot.com site.
I'm left with a sense of defeat, above all disappointment and frustration. At my work you solve the problem, but I found only dead ends and nothing less to troubleshoot.
Any ideas before I return this for a refund and give up on Asus as just a poor manufacturer?
But even if there's no further input on this issue, and someone could just help me understand one thing: gaming issues aside (I crunch numbers on the road and game on console when home) is it better to have the U47A-RGR6 with the I7 2640M 2nd generation, or the U47VC with the I5 3rd generation 3210M?
ARK | Compare Intel® Products
That's the best comparison I could get, but still didn't make sense of the data.
Thanks a ton! (and sorry for taking a whole page to myself) -
Also, I contacted Asus and they offered an RMA: Anyone have any experience with Asus RMAs? -
Hi! I have a question to you. In some of the previous posts i noticed, that some owners of this laptop claim, that their battery lasts +- 10 hours without WiFi, and about 8 hours with WiFi. I don't know how is this possible: cause the capacity of this cell/battery is 55352mWh, and the minimal power consumption is 7000mW. So after some mathematical calculations i get the maximum cell capacity: 7 hours 55 minutes. And this is without wifi, keyboard light and brightness 0%, everything on minimal. Its impossible for this laptop to last 10 hours, then the power consumpion should have been 5.5 W, which is impossible! In my laptop the battery capacity matches wth my calculations. Or maybe im doing sth wrong, or my battery is not as good as yours?

I'm looking to purchase an Asus U47VC-DS51. Best buy the RAM listed at expandable to 16gb. Is this correct?
Thank you. -
hi,
I do have some questions about linux on this laptop.
Please if you can share your experience about it.
How linux friendly is it?
Is there an option in the bios concerning dedicated/integrated gpu to select on of them direcly from bios?
how out of the box works wifi, backlight keyboard?
Please if you can mention wich distro you used and kernel.
also if someone did try usb or hdmi to vga with dualscreen/ twin view ,did you noticed any problems ?
Thanks in advance -
Yeah, you can put 2 sticks of 8GB RAM in it.

Alright, last we left off I was returning a u47a for the third time due to an
apparently faulty trackpad. Thinking it was a bad batch from one store, I
started loooking around online for a good deal. Got a u47vc from B&H Photo for
$725 after a mail in rebate. Feeling good about that, I anxiously awaited its
delivery.
Sad to say this unit has the same problems as the other three. I've been
looking around for different keywords in a last ditched attempt to better
understand what's going on.

I mean aside from the trackpad being under your thumbs when typing, skipping

As soon as you plug it into the wall, all breaks loose.
Get this:
plugged into power strip, power strip turned off, jumps around and clicks on

if you lift it up in the front so its resting on the back edge, it stops

if you lift it up in the back so its resting on the front edge, it stops

set back down on its entire base, it'll start jumping right away.
if I use a three prong to a two prong adaptor, issue persists
even if I just barely touch the ground plug of the power source to the ground
hole in the outlet without plugging in either of the other two prongs, it
starts jumping around immediately
I've followed the obvious steps from Asus support and the rest of the world:
uninstall the driver and reboot allowing W7 to do its magic
Installing the latest drivers from the Asus site
See the above posting for a list of those
Reimaged the OS drive
Problem persists through everything.
I downloaded the latest Synaptics driver from this site just to see...:
I even tried downloading a driver for the Synaptic driver once used in these
types of laptops.
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download Touchpad
Didnt detect a Synaptic device, so the install failed (duh).
Now, on a personal note, allow me a few observations. On the second u47a there
was a permanent marker scribble on the laptop inside the battery compartment. I
have never seen a quality inspector note like that.
On the fourth one, when I first opened the lid there was a little bugary smear
above the f7 key. Both of these were factory sealed boxes. A little disturbing.
Even the stickers near the wrist rests aren't on straight and aligned. Maybe if
they cant get the stickers on right, the rest of the stuff is a little crooked
under the hood.

To the other owners: does the Instant On Deep Sleep Mode sort of put the laptop into a type of hibernation after several (in my case 4-5) hours?
-
has anyone experienced this?
On my new u47vc, quite often when it's been suspended (lid down, powered on and left for several hours) it refuses to boot when I press the power switch. I must take the power adapter off (unplug from unit) remove the battery, re-insert the battery. Then... Windows most often will "Resuming Windows" Not good if I'm in front of a customer about to do a presentation.
I've called ASUS who want me to reload to factory default. They don't guarantee this will remedy the problem. Not an option as I've spent days configuring it.
Any ideas? -
I got mine yesterday. Tried sleeping without instant on. Works fine. Is yours with "instant on" on?
-
Have you tried making it sleep WITH instant on?
UPDATE: yesterday, I actually turned it off. and I had to remove/reinsert the battery while disconnected in order to boot. So not likely on OS issue. I also updated to the latest BIOS.
Thanks again for wanting to help me out.

I contacted ASUS and it was RMAed. Got it back about a week ago with a fresh motherboard and the problem seemed to be fixed. These past few days however, it has been repeating the same issue. Something else is causing this problem hardware-wise. I have contacted ASUS for a supervisor about this. Will post further details.
Are there any ASUS CUSTOMER LOYALTY TEAM MEMBERS who would like to respond to this issue? -
hi bcmp,
Thanks for sharing your story. EXACTLY the same behavior here. I'be been trying to find a pattern before calling ASUS for a second time, but because it's intermittent, it's very challenging to find one.
It even occurred when the system had been turned off completely. (not sleep or hibernate but completely shut off)
Now that at least two of us our reporting the same problem, I'm hoping to get some customer care when I contact Asus tomorrow. I'll present them with your link. Feel free to use mine in your quest for a solution with them.
Let's keep each other updated regarding progress, I think we'll both benefit from it.
One of the reasons I switched from over a decade of using DELL to Asus is their claim to customer satisfaction and robust hardware, Let's hope they live up to their reputation in dealing with our issues.
Thanks for taking the time to post.
Gilles -
Since this was my second RMA, I asked to speak to a supervisor. The supervisor issued me an expedited RMA for my problems. I also requested to have the HDD and RAM replaced. Obviously, something else is causing the problem besides the motherboard. When I asked what ASUS could do for me if the problem happened a third time, they said that they would "ensure the problem is fully inspected and fixed this time". I am beginning to think that this is not a minor issue, but rather a major defect. If you don't mind me asking, from which retailer did you purchase your U47VC?
Ben -
Thanks again for following up. I really appreciate it. Knowing your situation will really help me in my upcoming resolution. I use my laptop for business therefore can not be without for long. I'm hoping that if your issue can be resolved, the solution can be duplicated for me and thanks to you... it'll be expedited.
I don't mind answering your question at all. I purchased it at Canada Computers in Toronto. They provide 2 weeks exchange policy. while I did contact them a couple of days prior to the 2 weeks, they asked me to follow up with ASUS first. So now I have to deal with ASUS... hoping they'll cooperate.
Where did you get yours from?
Gilles -
Glad I could be of help!
I use my laptop in a classroom setting and likewise, I do not like having this problem. (I've had the laptop for 6 weeks so far 2.5 of which it has been in for repair).
Mine was from BH Photo Video in New York.
I'll continue to keep you posted over the status of RMA #2.

How long does an RMA usually take? when did ASUS say you would receive it?
Gilles -
Hi everyone,
I live in Poland(so sorry if i did some language mistakes) and I am considering Asus u47vc as my new laptop. I would be thankfull if anyone of lucky owners of this laptop would answer few of my questions.
1) I can only purchase version: wo049v of asus u47vc. Does anybody have that one? How it performs?
2) There are 2 specifications of Nvidia Geforce 620m. Its core can be based on either the 40nm GF108 chip or the new power-optimized 28nm GF117 chip with 64-bit or 128-bit DDR3 memory. Could You tell me which one is in asus u47vc? I belive 28nm with 128-bit would be better.
3)I wanted to plug this laptop to monitor with 1920x1080 resolution when I will be working at home. Maybe then I will also play some games. Did anyone already done that? Is that graphic card perform well in high resolution on another monitor? In what settings a game still works?
I will be thankfull for any kind of help -
At least in the US, ASUS does not keep its customers "in the loop" during the repair process. I called the Monday following the repair asking about what had been done to it, and the representative said that they could not tell me and that there would be a summary in the box.
Hope this helps,
Ben -
I don't like the fact that I'll likely lose the info on the drive when I do RMA it.. It's taken me many days to setup/config the system for my biz. (application load, networking, email, etc.)
Anyhow, I'm assuming from your email that there were no "summary" in the box. Or was that how you discovered they had swapped the mb?
Gilles
PS. if you'd like to take this offline, feel free to email me at the email found on my website: True Connections Video Productions -

Gilles and I are working together to see if either of us can get a solution. I'm on RMA#2 right now.

This is one of the laptops I'm considering, and I'm aiming to make a decision before the month ends, as there is presently a 150 dollar rebate on this laptop. I'm a fairly light casual gamer, and I tend to be pretty mobile with my laptops, or at least I have been in the past. My previous two laptops were in the Asus 14 inch variety, and I believe this is the only current option that packs enough specs to justify purchasing for the light gaming that I do. Most of the games that I play tend to be of the Starcraft 2 variety, thus older and designed to be less graphic intensive anyway, though I'll probably want to pick up Total War Rome 2 next year. I don't mind playing with less than the top settings. My present laptop is about 4 years old, and I have no idea how much longer it will last until one of the major components fails, as it already gets way hotter than it should for ordinary processes. 4 years is a good life for a laptop, at which point technology almost compels one to upgrade anyway, at least if you want to continue to do light gaming.
So my first question is aimed at how well a laptop like this will hold up over the long term? Put a laptop under gaming stress for a long enough time and eventually something will wear out. I do have a solid reliable laptop cooling pad, which should help some.
My second question stems from an interest in Solid State drives. I've done a bit of research, and I think I'd like to get one. My current laptop has around 250 Gigs, of which I've used around 130. I'd guess this would be a "typical" usage. I honestly do not know what people do to fill up 750 GB, let alone 2x 750 GB and so forth that I've seen in the larger laptops. So is it pretty easy to set one up on this machine? Has anyone here done the upgrade themselves? How do you like it? What size might work well for my own setting? 256GB, which would probably cover everything and leave room to grow? 128 GB, while converting the laptop's original hard drive with an external HD enclosure for some of the stuff I've got.
Just trying to get some advice from those more tech-savvy than I am. -
What's the difference between the U47VC and the U47A?
The only difference I see is the GPU. -
