i´m sorry for you lastmanotp.
but the description on redcoon online store shows only a HD+ display....
i also called asus and they told me, that all models of the n73jq with the partnumber: 90NZY A848 N142 BVL151 has the right (Full-HD) Display.
I orderd mine and hope to get full HD.
-
My screen is gorgeous, but I can imagine that certain users need the higher resolution.
Just remember, mine has a sticker saying "Full HD," though it is only 1600x900. In this case, I imagine the "Full HD" applies to the the HDMI's 1080p output, which, by the way, is fantastic on my Samsung.
In any event, good luck getting it right the first time! -

I downloaded the newest drivers from ASUS and used Everest which shows a max. resolution of 1600x900. Well, I gave ASUS the model number of the display... They didn't confirm anything about that. But I think that the display was sharp enough to say that it runs in the native resolution. -
This should not be so confusing. -
The Partnumber (PN) should be on the machine and on the packing.
-
LastManOnThePlanet Notebook Enthusiast
I do have the same part number (with and addition F at the end) but Windows and Everest say it only has 1600*900.
Well, I don't believe ASUS anything, though. -
-
Asus you make me mad!!!!!!!!
It seems that Asus don`t know what specifications their laptops have.
I called them, and they confirmed that nb`s with that number has full HD.....
Do somebody know alternative laptops??? sony F13? noisy??
thanx -
LastManOnThePlanet Notebook Enthusiast
I tested a Sony F13 before. Never have had such a noisy laptop with a huge whinning problem. I sent it back - normal work is not possible with that laptop.
Then I asked HP about the Envy 17 with Full HD. Well, they couldn't even tell me when and if there would be such an option in Germany.
I don't really know a good alternative laptop for this price.
I sent my laptop to ASUS for repair. 10-15 working days and hopefully I will have the right laptop. -
Is anyone who has used a N73JQ able to compare its sound quality to that of the Qosmio X505 and the Dell XPS Studio series? I am looking for a notebook that has the best possible sound for watching blu-ray and listening to music without external speakers.
-
scorptrigger, the Asus NX90 seems to be designed just for you.

Hi, I have one question wich bother me a while.
I have nvida 335m optimus, 1 hdd 5400rpm - 500gb, when i open keyboard and start notebook i see that cpu cooler doesent spin, it is turn off but on the down right side in area of hdd i hear silent woosh sound like another went.
My friends told me that this is not the hdd sound and that there must be a second fan, i agree with that but there isnt any aditional exhaust.
Is it posible that this series of asus laptop had two fans?
Maybe from nvidia, if it is whay it work 24/7 if my notebook 99% of time use the intel graphic card.
I search on internet like forewer for this answer but couldnt find any, im desperet, so please help me. Thank You.
(Im asking becouse i wana know is this normal, and if the sound is from hdd i will replace it, if is from graphic card than cant do much, i must live with it)
(ps. sry for speling, never learn english in school, this is from net and tv ) -
I leave my current laptop on continuously for 8-10 hours at a time, but it's a pretty tame Dell Latitude D630 (14", 2.1GHz Intel T8100, integrated graphics) and I don't want to buy a lot bigger and quicker machine at the price of having any overheating problems!
Any comments from anyone on this is welcome! -
The fan is very quiet and the temps have not gone more than slightly above room temperature on any surface. It runs very cool.
Many days I was running this with an ambient temperature of 82 degrees or so.
The exhaust vent puts out warm air, but not as warm as the N71J I tried.
It would be nice if another owner could give their impressions. Sorry I don't have a digital thermometer. -
Sorry for persistence, but does anyone know any online resellers (offering international shipping) who have the N73JQ 1920*1080 in stock? Thanks...
-
Maybe if this model is big in Europe and the USA, they will start releasing some of the higher res units?
I don't want to stay home because I'm getting my house roofed, so I'm basically using this as my work and study computer and entertainment machine all week. Very glad to have it with me. Had to take a two hour online exam yesterday, and this was very easy on my eyes.
Should be getting Battlefield: Bad Company 2 tomorrow, so I will post the performance of the GPU soon.
And maybe tomorrow I'll rent a BluRay disk to see if it works.
I know finding HDD brackets for Asus machines seems to hard. Anybody have a suggestion? -

So I've nothing to do but wait for N73JQ FHD to show up... /sigh/ -
Got my N73jq and i`m happy that it has the full HD screen.
cheers -
What is the exact model number or part number? -
The Windows Systemmanager shows 1920x1080, also the
"Everest"-Tool -
Congratulations! So, please! Tell us where you found it! =)

How noise is the N73JQ in idle-mode? or in office? is it generally too loud, or could you work with it?
and yes, it was a mistake by the manufacturer. i called with my reseller and he promised me that there will be no more notebooks with a wrong resolution and i will get a N73JQ by the end of next week with FHD. -
the noise while surfing in the internet is not too loud! you can hear the fan for sure, but its very constant, not with up`s and down`s. i`m very pleased about the noise. i was interested on a sony vaio f13 but the fan issue was a no go for me.
other short impressions:
Full HD Display looks good, no bad pixels, good contrast and brightness
keyboard very flexy... in that point is my old vaio much better.
sound is good, but volume could be higher -
Played Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for about an hour on medium at native resolution, temps peaked at 80 C, but mostly were from 77 -79 C.
I haven't figured out how to get the frames-per-second to display during the game.
Any quick tips for this?
By the way, the game is lots of fun and very smooth. I'm going to try high settings next, but I'm way short on time.
I'm taking the CompTIA A+ certification exam in four weeks, and I've got lots of studying to do. Passing the exam will allow me to get credit for two classes! -
@ cary ader: try it with "fraps" ! just install, start the program, start the game and than you can see your fps.
i'm very looking forward for my N73-JQ...
and good luck for your exam -
got my second n73jq today, again with 1600x900 dpi, no FHD.

Today they offered me that they have to wait for the panel to arrive from Taiwan! So they already told me that it may take up to 30 days! First they told me about 2-3 weeks. -
I haven't seen any US retailers carrying the n73jq with a full 1080 HD screen, they're all 1600x900. Hopefully for those European users who were supposed to get a full 1080 screen you'll get your problems sorted out.

What's the price difference btwn HD+ and FHD machines, anyone? -

Doh! I posted here about a dramatic temp difference when I put a couple of bamboo coasters under the rear feet.
When I ran Core Temp with BF: BC2 for 30 mins, I, ummm, had the laptop on battery.
Like I said...Doh! -
OK, my turn to ask about resolution!
As I understand it, screen resolution is 1600x900 and the HDMI output provides 1920x1080.
So my question is, does the VGA 15-pin D-Sub output also provide 1920x1080 like the HDMI, or is the VGA out only 1600x900 like the notebook screen?
I was looking at an NEC monitor (E231W-BK 23-Inch Widescreen LED-Backlit, only $278) which is native resolution of 1920x1080, but no HDMI input.
"Input Connectors: DisplayPort, DVI-D, VGA 15-pin D-Sub"
If I have to have HDMI for the 1920x1080, then I have to find a different monitor - anybody know for sure the VGA output resolution? -
But I cannot get each display to show its own native resolution at the same time when using the VGA connection. The lower resolution on the laptop seems to be the limiting factor. If I want full resolution on the Samsung monitor, I have to turn off the display on the laptop. If I want them both on, I have to settle for 1600x900 or less on both.
However, when I output through HDMI to a 1080p HDTV, I get native on both.
If somebody would care to explain why the GPU works this way, I'd appreciate it. -
Thanks again Cary!
I found out that instead of going VGA to VGA, I can go directly from the HDMI output into the DVI-D, because the NEC monitor is HDCP compliant. All that's needed is a conversion cable.
This makes me , because it's hard to find affordable monitors that pivot (rotate 90 degrees H-to-V), especially of that size and LED backlit.
(I hate waiting.) -
LastManOnThePlanet Notebook Enthusiast
After I wrote down my frustration about the wrong panels in a feedback page from ASUS I was contacted from an ASUS employer and he will present me a solution tomorrow. I'm curious about that. Currently waited 3.5 weeks now for the laptop since ordering the first one.

Glossing over the lack of clarity on Asus' part, let's try another test: 3D
Not that you have a pair of shutter glasses laying close, but according to nVidia the GT 425M does effortless 3D (all the 400 mobiles do) so could you kids test if they stuffed a 120Hz capable LCD in there? (be it 1600x900 or 1920x1080). Sure, you could just ask them, but since there's this resolution drama re: what Asus says...
Thanks!
-
Does anyone have the experience of changing the LCD screen? There are 1920*1080 ones for N73JQ on ebay. Seems risky and stupid, but otherwise I can be waiting for ages... =(

LastManOnThePlanet Notebook Enthusiast
Update: ASUS offered me to give back the money (thanks ASUS). I agreed and ordered my third laptop. It has the 1920*1080 resolution finally. -
Has anybody upgraded Windows 7 and tried either BitLocker or XP Mode?
-
Hi Cary,
I signed up to notebookreview because of your helpful thread so I used you as a referral. I don't know what that does, but hopefully it gives you something.
I am currently into week two of my new N71JQ-X2 that I bought from Costco. I had originally bought an HP DV7-4083cl with Beats Audio from there and it was complete garbage. HP has really gone downhill on their designs.
We I opened my N71JQ-X2 it was so much better than the HP. In terms of sound, it blows the Beats Audio HP out of the water. It's not even a competition. The N71JQ-X2 is the best audio that I've ever heard come out of a laptop. The Altec Lansing SRS Premium Sound with that bass subwoofer underneath is awesome.
I noticed that Costco now has the N73JQ-A2 for just $150 dollars more than I paid for the N71JQ-X2.
I'm trying to figure out if I should exchange my N71 for the N73.
For that $150 difference I gain Blu-Ray, 2 more GB of RAM, Nvidia over HD 5730 and i7-740qm over 720qm. However, what I loose is the ExpressCard slot and the great sound. I needed the ExpressCard slot just in case I wanted to expand the computer and add Firewire for video capture. The option will be gone.
Since you have had both can you talk a little more about the differences in the audio. I noticed from your post that it does not have the subwoofer on the bottom.
Can you compare the Altec Lansing SRS with the Bang & Olufsen ICEPower. I like the controls of the Altec Lansing. Do you get the same type of customization controls with the B&O ICEPower? Which one sounds better in terms of bass reproduction?
Thanks!
A couple more questions for any of you N73JQ-A2 owners.
1.) Is there a 2nd hard drive bay?
2.) If there is a 2nd hard drive bay, does it come with a caddy?
3.) If it does not come with a caddy, can you just connect a 2nd HDD without one?
4.) Have you noticed any vibration issues like with the N71JQ?
5.) How is the performance of the NVIDIA GT425M for HD video editing compared to the ATI HD5730 of the N71JQ?
Thanks! -
But I've decided I don't really want that extra drive because battery life is already just two hours. Maybe in a couple of years SSD's will be big and cheap enough for me, and I'll replace the current drive with one.
For extra space and backup, I use an external drive. For quick backup of critical stuff, I always carry a flash drive.
3. I've read about jury-rigged HDD's in open bays, but never tried it.
4. During the brief time I had the N71, I didn't notice a vibration issue. This unit, the N73Jq, has none to speak of. When the BD is going full speed transferring data to the HDD, you can feel a VERY slight vibration if you put your fingers on the palm-rest, just enough to know the drive is working, but I think that is true for any BD drive.
5. Video editing is great. I didn't try it on the N71, so I can't compare, but you can ask in that owner's lounge.
From what I understand, the vid editing and conversion process is much more processor intensive than, say, a game, so the CPU and RAM are very important. As you know from the specs, the N73 is an upgrade there.
I run BF: BC2 at high (I think the 3rd highest of 4 choices) with no stutters or any other problems.
The sound is fantastic on the N73, better, imho, than on the N71. I didn't like the subwoofer on the bottom of the N71 because it looked and felt vulnerable, like I could damage it if I put the unit down wrong on a plug or a USB drive by accident. But that is just my perception; it might be stronger than it seemed. In any case, I didn't notice that it had better bass performance than the N73. I don't mean to be cynical, but it almost seemed like a gimmick. If you had enough bass pounding out of it, wouldn't that cause probems on the HDD
There are enough sound tweaking options for me, but I ain't no sound engineer.
Is it worth the extra money to exchange? That's up to you. I haven't used the BD for BluRays yet, so I can't claim that as a plus for me. (I just assume eventually software will come on BD's, but that might be a long time from now. And you can always add one later, right? )
I can never have enough RAM, even to the point of wasting money on RAM I don't need...I don't remember what the slot configuration was on the N71, so you have to do the calculations for the options of $$$ and performance benefits for yourself. (Right now to replace 4 GB with 8 GB is running about $140 or so, right?)
I loaded up on RAM because, get this, I want to run Win 98, Win 2K and Win XP at the same time through VritualBox, and maybe leave them all open. I also work with big vid files and very large Canon .RAW's.
I won't have much time to get to all of this stuff until after my exams next month.
A second HDD would be nice for all of this, but, like I said, an external is fine for the time being because I'd rather not sacrifice more battery life. (Though I guess I could disable the second HDD when I'm not using it???)
The big thing I didn't like about the N71 was the placement of the HDMI port, as I mentioned in an earlier post. It was bad on mine, and seemed to create a weak point in the side of the laptop. Also, I never did get it to output 1080p to my HDTV. Have you had success with that yet?
I did think a while about the ExpresssCard slot, but I've never needed one. The few things I thought I might need can connect through USB. Firewire will be around a while, so if you have a device that uses it, that would be a big factor. However, I'm guessing USB 3.0, which, in theory, is faster than Firewire, and is already backward compatible with tons of devices, is going to become the connection of choice. Plus one of the USB's doubles as an eSATA.
And I do like having the network jack and two USB's in the back of the laptop.
So far, my machine has been rock solid in terms of performance and stability. Over a month of heavy usage, and not one lock-up or blue-screen or anything (knock on wood!). I wish the battery life were about an hour longer, but now I have a spare battery, so I can live with 4 hours unplugged.
I do hope other owners will start talking about their machines! And I hope all that display-resolution confusion is cleared up! -

I really want to do the FPS display for BF: BC2 which runs so smoothly set on high. What is the command and at what point to I enter it?
I'd love to see this review translated into English. It's incredibly indepth. Love all the well documented stats and the great photos. -
Does the N73JQ come with an internal mic? If so, how is it? - Thx!
-
However, when I record my voice directly with the default settings, I feel that it is a tiny bit less in quality that the mic that came with the N71Jq.
One good test, which I haven't had the time to run yet, is to use it with Windows Speech Recognition. If it works with that, it's quite good. Of course you have to speak very clearly and in a quiet room, especially during the "training" period.
******************
Right now I'm running the verifier.exe diagnostics that comes with Windows. Zero problems!
******************
Finally, I feel like a foolish glutton with the RAM. I really don't see any use for 12GB! Morning after regrets. Hopefully, perhaps years from now, something will come along that uses it, and I'll feel very clever. (Dreaming, right?) -
