Yeah maybe I am paranoid from reading that thread. Hahahaha. The sound is not in any way a squealing sound though and it doesn't bother me. Also, I was wondering are there 9 or 12 cell batteries available anywhere for this laptop? Sorry if I made anybody panic btw.

Yeah, 2 sockets, 4GB. Safe bet that it's not mixed.

I knew you read that thread! I just don't want us going down that road. I bet in the next few pages we will start getting questions about the noise problems with the N61. :D
I was wondering about the batteries myself but haven't looked into it yet.

I'm not sure that's what it is... Though I have no proof of this I really think if you are buying laptop with 6 gb I'm pretty sure you're getting 1x4 gb and 1x2 gb. If they had 3 sockets then you could theoretically put in 12 gb without the mobo limitation. Same thing with customization, when you get A1 or any other laptop like sony f with 6 gb they have to put in 1x4, 1x2 cause the mobos are the same as on the preconfigured models, so obviously they only have two sockets. The only laptop that I know has more is one of the newest HP elitebooks where you have expansion up to 16 gb... Or 4 sockets. That's just my understanding though, correct me if I'm wrong.

The ASUS G51JX-A1 has 3xSoDIMM slots. You can see that in the forums ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5837619).

I had a N71JQ and the high pitch noise was really loud while on battery. Like an alternating beep. When i plugged it in, the noise was still there but the was not as loud. Also, there was something loose inside the laptop. like a capacitor or something when i shook the lappy i could hear somehting moving in there. The Blue Rae from the n71 was also very touchy, if i tilted the laptop 15 degrees, it would not read the disk properly and i could hear the disk rub againts the player. Iknow it is the n61 forum but im still posting because they are similar machines.
My old inspiron 640m did the same high pith noise and it is apparently due to crappy power management on the motherboard.
Sent back to asus yesterday, hope to have the replacement soon. Asus will replace if you are between 30 days :)

The people posting in that forum link seem to say 4 slots.
Unless I'm mistaken with the core i7 they use 2 or 4 slots for pairing.

I remember your post in the N71JQ line. What caazinkid was describing sounds nothing like what you were experiencing. Something loose in your laptop did not sound good. Let us know how your new N71 is here when you get it. :D

You are correct. Everything I read said 3xSoDIMM. That was the installed configuration and not the number of slots.

    http://www.stuffopolis.net/UploadFolder/G51J-Inside-Boxes-BIG-justblurred.jpg

According to the above picture, they have 4 slots and 3 RAM sticks installed. That should mean that the HM55 supports mixed RAM and ASUS seems to support it.

Ok now I see I was getting the # of slots confused with actual installed sticks.
That would be good news if we could use mixed memory. I am a little confused about How many useable ram slots we have on this thing.
I just ran a diagnostic report that stated the motherboard supports 4 slots.

The chipset supports 4 slots. It doesn't mean they put the slots on the board. Chances are, we only have 2.

    ASUS G51JX = 4 memory slots
    ASUS N71JQ = 2 memory slots
    ASUS N61JQ = 2 memory slots

That makes sense. G73 comes with 8 gb so I'm guessing if it has 4 slots, it has 4x2 gb. The G51 comes with 4 gb so it probably has 2x2 gb with two slots free. It really wouldn't make sense for manufacturers to put 4 gb sticks unless they have to, as they cost roughly 4 times more then 2 gb sticks. Another thing is that even though the G51 has 4 slots it only supports 8 gb max. And I'm pretty sure that's a motherboard limitation. So it's not like you can buy 4x4gb and put it in there.

The question remains tho, will the N61JQ run mixed memory?

The ASUS G51JX-A1 comes with 3x2GB = 6GB. It supports 16GB Max. You can indeed put 4x4GB in it.

By mixed do you mean 1x2GB + 1x4GB? If so, the answer is yes.

Weird, I was looking at newegg and the G51JX-X1 has 4 gb. Is that different for A1? And on asus website it says it's 4 gb max... Are you sure they don't have motherboard limitations and all it depends on, is how many slots you have? In that case if there were 6 gb ddr3 memory modules in a year or so, you would be able to put in 24 gb?

My question was different tho... Would it work if I kept one of the 2 gb sticks in my N61JQ and replaced the other with 4 gb G.Skill with the same speed?

Yes, the A1 is different from the X1.

The X1 has a different configuration, different warranty, and you get to pay for shipping and Sales Tax when shipping to most states.

Memory quantity is controlled by the chipset, processor, OS and BIOS. At this point 16GB is supported, anything beyond that is hypothetical.

As for your mixed memory question...I repeat "By mixed do you mean 1x2GB + 1x4GB? If so, the answer is yes." Brand is usually, but not always, irrelevant so you would have to test mixed brands yourself.

That's kind of what I meant with the chipset limitation. I thought that each mobo has it's own limitation and won't go above that.

And for the mixed memory... yes considering there is 2x2gb kingston inside I would take one of them out and replace it with a different brand 4 gb stick. So 1x2 gb and 1x4 gb. As for the brands I guess I'll just have to give it a shot and see if it's going to work. At least now I know that it should / could work. Thanks for clearing this out.

UPS has delayed my shipment because of bad weather. What I don't understand is why they haven't given me a new estimated delivery date when it has been scanned into Jacksonville, FL's warehouse this morning at 11AM. Usually, they are scanned into Jacksonville on the day before it is delivered. I guess there must be a ton of trucks that were late getting there and everything is now double-time.

Anyway, I am just hoping it comes in by the weekend.

    I just got my N61JQ-X1 !!!!

This thing flies and looks so beautiful... HOWEVER I regret purchasing it :( The screen is just terrible and by far the worst laptop screen I have ever had. The viewing angles are so narrow and you can see "bleed" in the background. Blacks look gray.

I'm sorry guys I know this is not what you wanted to hear, just a heads up for you guys still thinking about this one.

I really want to love it, but that screen is just so bad, and I don't give a crap about the resolution, I think 1366x768 is just fine.

I'll shoot a video comparing my Studio XPS and this one side by side so that you guys can see what I'm talking about.

    :(

Everything else is absolutely amazing though.

So, I just got my Intel Wifi Link 5100 Half-Height PCI-E card in the mail today and installed it. I took out the original card and to my surprise, there's no "Atheros" written on it...it just says "Azurewave" and a model number that's different from "AR9285".

Anyways, so I had some trouble with it because it was showing up as installed, but it wouldn't show any connections. Turns out that you have to download the My Wifi software from Intel's website and Enable the card first.

Now it works like a charm and I can connect to all the connections and damn fast!

    Here's the card I pulled:

You'll see the wireless card right after you take off the panel. It's right there, you can't miss it :)

All you have to do is take off the two antenna leads, unscrew the original card, and pull it out. Then, you slide the new one in, screw it in, and plug the antennas back in. Just keep track of which wire is which (black one is antenna 1 and gray one is antenna 2). You'll need to plug it back in matching the antenna #'s on the new card (they're clearly written near the inputs of the wireless card).

oh hell yea, its finally connecting to the N network here. i was bumming off someone's network earlier and it was a G connection - slow and intermittent.

its really fast...i mean, that's all i have to say :p

just note that it's a half-height PCI-E card, so if you get one (eBay it), make sure it's one of those.

    Hi all,

Just need some support regarding the purchase of the N61JQ, as compared to the HP DV7-2112TX which I'm considering.

Ever since my 3 year old Asus A8JS GPU burnt out (Nvidia Go7700) last week, I'm extremely wary of heat issues. After reading through the threads on this laptop in this forum, seemed that there is slight concern with regards to heat, especially since temps here in Australia can go up to mid-high 30s degree Celsius. So can anyone give an opinion as to whether I should get this one with a cooler or opt for a less-heat system (like the HP DV7) with a cooler? Not an intense gamer as I once was but still a couple of 3D games like Fallout 3 or such every now and then and the occassional use of Photoshop.

    Thanks in advance to all.

Before I bought my N61JQ I had an HP dv9500 that died because of overheating, so I know what you mean. And to be honest the only reason why I bought the JQ is cause I need a powerful computer. I do a lot of photoshop with large files 2 gb and over, so the more power the better.

But if you don't really do anything that needs a lot of horsepower you can just get some of the more powerful core 2 duos which are cheap, or I would probably go for N61JA which has i5 processor. i5 is dual core so it will definitely generate less heat then quad i7. Another thing is gpu. 5730 seems to run fairly high so if your outside temperatures have effect on it maybe you should go with something that runs a little bit cooler.

I personally wouldn't buy HP again, but obviously that's just me.

I dont remember anyone being concerned about heat with this unit....they run extremely cool and even OC'd to the max I havent seen one go above 85 which is still way below critical levels.....without OC'ing it at all I have never seen one get above 75 or so which is a very comfortable temperature.

Sorry to hear that about the screen If I recall you were having buyers remorse about the screen before you got it.
I have no expertise on LCD screens but I don't see what you see on my screen. I guess everything is subjective. It's good you are giving a heads up to people that are concerned about the screen. Hopefully for anyone who has this on order this is more an issue with your screen. In the meantime we need some reports from people that already have this unit if they have this problem.
You were getting in on that attempt to get a backlit keyboard to work on this model. Were you going to persue that at all or do you think it's a dead end? :D

I agree, I currently have an HP, and it will be the last one I ever get. I've had so many overheating problems with it and just terrible customer support from HP. I've been living with these problems for 3 years now, and enough is enough. The first thing I was looking at when choosing my new laptop is making sure there wouldn't be any overheating issues, and I ended up choosing the N61JQ.

I'm playing it as safe as possible this time with regards to the heat issue. I got the laptop with IC Diamond Thermal compound which should help lower the temperatures a few degrees as well as purchase a Zalman NC2000 notebook cooler which should help even more. Not that the laptop would run really hot without those things, I'm just paranoid about it after my past experiences with overheating.

Here is an old post of mine on the heat. This screen shot shows the temps with a 27% load.
Has anyone had any experience with thermaPak products. Here is a Link. If you bing them you can get more information. I find it very intriguing since you would not use up any battery life like a usb fan would.

Personally I don't think there is a heat issue with the N61JQ line.
We did have one guy from Singapore talking about 85 while gaming. But his report was a little sketchy.
But replace a 3 year old burnt out Asus with an HP??? You will be wishing that HP will burn out well before you get to 3 years after owning an Asus!!

Well, now that my initial panic attack has passed, I think I may have over- reacted about the screen. It's just that I expected to get a better screen than my 2 year old Studio XPS, but it's not that bad.

I do miss the backlit keyboard though of the Dell though, and I think that unless ASUS releases a bios upgrade to enable the onboard power there is no point in buying the G51 keyboard, which I can confirm is a perfect fit for this one. There are other ways power the backlit keyboard but I do not want to void my warranty, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for the bios update.

I am amazed at how well built this laptop is. The touchpad is the best I've tried. The palm rest material is nice too.

I havent run any games/benchmarks yet because I'm uninstalling all the crapware and customizing everything to my taste.

One question though...what program can I use to benchmark the RAM speed? I have a matched pair of 2 x 2gb DDR3 1333 ram and I want to check if it actually makes a difference.

This is pretty interesting. I wish I knew about this when I had my m860tu, this might have saved my graphics card (or maybe it was faulty from the start and it ran its course, who knows)

Either way, if this laptop does not stay cool (from most reports it looks like they do) I will look into getting one of these.
