It's all tounge in cheek. They have treated me well to. And a manager did give me an RMA to return my X1 when I complained about the warranty even though they only take DOA returns for computers. I just couldn't pull the trigger on returning this thing (seperation anxiety!). I was over this until I saw them listing a 2 year warranty now.

I don't understand what you mean by "power adapter throttling" so I am going to post some observations:

I have not used the system that heavy but, I have played WoW and Oblivion for around 5 continuous hours and while the system blew out some very hot air, the system was only warm to the touch. I am sure I dropped a few cores during that time. Power management was set to performance so power throttling was minimal. The power adpater didn't get any hotter either.

    Hope that helps a little.

Newegg is a great warehouse to order pieces-parts from. They have always been fairly good to me as long as everything was done online. They also have decent prices. They have a fantastic selection.

I have called them a couple of times and both times the person on the phone was irritated when they picked up the phone. One was pretty rude. I was only calling to find out how to get a receipt for the ADW on my N61. She came across like I was bothering her.

After coming to the forums and having personal assistance from PowerNotebooks and XoticPC while not even buying from them and finding out that I could have purchased the A1 for only $35 more with the customization options they provide, I don't think I will be getting another system from Newegg. Just pieces-parts.

We don't really hate Newegg here and some of it is playing around but, they are just an impersonal warehouse discussed in a forum full of people giving personal attention -- some of which are resellers. We also tease eachother the same way. ;-)

I did temperature testing on my A1 in this post. I only ran the torture test for 30 minutes, but the temps seemed to reach steady state in only about 5 minutes. Temps were about 20 degrees C below junction temperature (100 C for the i7 720QM) without any extra cooling (notebook cooler), so it looks like there is no danger of throttling from heat. Regarding power, the TDP for the i7 is 45 W. The power adapter supplies max 90 W. You definitely will not draw 90 W from a CPU-crunching task, but I guess it's possible if you have lots of graphics going on. In my tests, CPU load was 100% (no GPU load), and there was no throttling.

thanks, rep +1. how is its GPU power consumption? for some dell models, if power adapter is less than 120W, it will have throttling issue due to a 55W GPU power consumption.(from http://www.amd.com/uk/products/notebook/graphics/ati-mobility-hd-5700/Pages/hd-5730-specs.aspx , it shows ATI 5730 TDP is 26W but i'm not sure if power consumption is different.)

Try recording onto an external hard drive or a separate hard drive to which would are using the game on. Its a technique film makers use with separating application from data as reading from both can slow down the video or editing feed.

i think it has been established already that the N61JQ-A1 does NOT throttle when connected to the AC Adaptor. However, it does seem to throttle a bit when on battery.

I think I'm going to have to call BS here unless you can back up your claim that the HDD bay is designed to dampen vibrations. Frankly I don't see anything that would support this conclusion.

On the other hand, as the SSD is going to be a systems drive and the magnetic drive for data, it would make far more sense if the data drive was in the optical bay. In this case, you could easily swap the data drive and DVD drive and still have a fully working system. Since SATA is hot swappable, you could even do it while the laptop is on and running, though your OS might not be happy about the change.

Newegg is like a fast food chinese restaurant. Its meant to just get your stuff for cheap and get out. Warranty? what dat? Customer Service? Why you call so much and no make order?

Perfect for small part for systems you would not even think about warranties for but not good for full on investments like laptops.

How does Oblivion run on this laptop. I've had issues with running Oblivion on Windows 7 and Vista on my older machines. Are you able to crank up all the graphic settings?

I always thought it was the drive itself and not the drive bay that deals with vibrations, bumps and drops.

The max power consumption with normal use will be something near that number. However, it is not an absolute max (if all heat dissipation components were designed to dissipate max power, they would be overkill for normal use). If you had a stress tests (power virus type program) that was driving both the CPU and GPU to draw max power, it would probably be more than 45+26. I don't know how much more .

    Good (well bad news),

My dad's laptop died this weekend.

Bad virus, then drivers were gone, then blue screen, now the harddrive throws random I/O errors during backup, regard less of what drive adapter I'm using. Windows XP Media center 2003, and it was 4 years old. Time for a replacment. 1.6ghz dual core, no video card, 3gb ram, 200gb hd.

I told him about the N61JQ, which happens to be about 150% better performance per $ than any laptop at bestbuy. He went for it. Also No tax and the 1 year ADW really sold him.

He went with the X1, only because he obviously needs a laptop now, he has no desktop. My A1 is still on pre-order.

I'm Happy I will get to checkout his laptop before mine arrives :)

So long story short, when both laptops get here, if any of you want to know more specific differences between the two I will have them both to compare side by side. Although we already know the only differences are just harddive and warranty, maybe I will find some small differences.

Ugh! I'm trying to understand the whole eyefinity setup and set it up on my N61JQ. I read the previous posts about needing a display port which I've determined I do not have. I have three 28" screens. One has 2-hdmi and 1-vga and the other two each have 2- hmdi, 1-vga and 1-dvi. So I gather I need to purchase a active display port but for which monitor? I just don't understand what's getting plugged where since the laptop only has the vga and hdmi. Forgive my ignorance. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Eyefinity will not work on this laptop. It needs to have a display port output which it does not have. There are no workarounds short of rewiring the interfaces on the graphics chip.

What you need is an external Video Adapter. I know PowerNotebooks sells ViBook USB adapter. I've never tried them myself.

Have you tried the new graphics driver? Click this to access driver updates that are not posted on the N61JQ part of the support site (ASUS' support site is very poorly organized). There are a lot of updates here, including the graphics driver. Click "VGA", then download the newest one that has a driver version similar to your current driver (usually in the driver download filename). E.g. on the VGA page, the latest update is version V8.692.1.0. There is also a new chipset driver (V9.1.1.1025), hotkey stuff (ATK_Package), and others.

I don't understand the ASUS policy here.
The N71JQ comes with 120W supply where as the N61JQ which has same specs except for a smaller screen and one less hard disk comes with 90W supply.

For the N71JQ also the driver page is not up to date.
Actually, there are even newer versions than what is found on the page you linked above. ;)

If you want the latest version of Power4Gear Hybrid and ATK drivers then look at what I posted in N71JQ Lounge here:

The chip supports it, if it has a display port output. This laptop does not have a display port output, so no, you cannot use Eyefinity.

More screen = more backlighting. The extra HDD also draws more power, and there's probably not a power adapter between 90 W and 120 W, so it just jumps to 120 W. If the 120 W adapter also outputs 19 VDC (which I assume it does), you could just buy another adapter if you are having power throttling problems, e.g. this.

I found that both sites have newer versions than the other /groan. E.g. your link has a newer Power4Gear Hybrid (1.1.32 vs 1.1.30), but my link has a newer ATK Package (1.0.0003 vs 1.0.0002). If you want the newest stuff, you should probably check both lol.

Multiply DC voltage by DC current to get the max (e.g. 19 V times 4.74 A = 90 W). The voltage is fixed, but the current will vary depending on the draw from the laptop, up to a maximum value stated on the adapter.

That was exactly what I thought.
I don't think my N71JQ monitor has much higher power requirement.
I like the fact that mine came with 120W supply, but the only disadvantage is that it is bigger and heavier.

As stevedogg mentioned power is the product of DC current with DC volatge. My 120W supply is rated as 19V and 6.32A.

Actually, that is what I usaully do when I install new operating system. I look at both the official cite as well as asustreiber.

The owner of asustreiber was on vacation for some weeks. That seems to have delayed the new stuff. Usually, he is faster than the official ASUS website.

Could someone do me a favour. Take a picture of the desktop, with the start menu open?

Also turbo if you are here, could you do the same with your N71? It will help give me an idea of desktop space!

    Hi Risco,

Here is a picture of N71JQ.

I am sorry the picture is little bit dark.
You know it is late at night here, and the lighting in the room is not too suitable for taking high quality picture.

This is a great forum, I wonder why I have not used it before. I am almost ready to pull the trigger and get a N61jq, as most reviews seem very good around here.
Its really good to get some hands-on experience about some performance factors from you guys, so, i'll try to ask for your opinions before I get it.

1st- it seems to me that the best choice to get it is on amazon, anyone knows of a better deal around at this time?

2nd- my only concern would be to know if I should wait and see the new lenovo's y560. What do you say, would you wait?

3rd- heaviest use of this new laptop would be for heavy photoshop and adobe CS4, gaming, some 3d modelling and secondlife. any comments about performance for these purposes?

Hey, i have a couple other smaller questions,

4- How many of you have gotten a 12cell battery?
5- This has multitouch, right? how is it working for you?
6- the only way to connect two monitors is with an external card?
7- your system comes with USB 3, right? what do you plan to use it for?
8- Do you recommend this i7 over any of the newer i5?

Thats more than a couple questions, hope not to bug you too much, thanks for any advice!
