I have been trying to work out how to power USB devices when the notebook is off. There is apparently a way to do this through the Bios but I wouldn't know where to start. Is this actually possible on the N61JQ-A1?
-
Would an HDMI to DisplayPort adapter work?
-
No it won't. It has to do with the interface on the card.
-
I know on my old G1S only certain USB ports were powered when the machine was off. I don't know if the N61JQ has that feature though.
-
It looks like the newer version of my VX Nano. I have mine already since 1 year now.
-
That is a very nice mouse! Yes, it is a 2.4Ghz receiver which is in constant communication with the mouse (steady draw of power). Logitech uses one receiver for many compatible products so it may also poll for other items. Great idea for a nano receiver!
-
Not in front of my laptop now but anyone know if you can define the Audio out on this laptop. My LCD takes HDMI but has no speakers, when I connected before and tried to get audio from the headphones i got nothing.

What is the screen like on this laptop? The only three things putting me off buying it are:
A) Knowing the quality of the screen. Does it have good contrast levels? I have an Asus F3JP at the moment and it has -really- bad vertical viewing angles so also what are the viewing angles like? Currently when I'm playing a game which has a dark environment, I the black or dark bits along the top of the screen invert which isn't helpful at all, the black is also very silver...
B) Ambient noise. Is it quite while doing basic things, i.e. web surfing?
C) Lacks backlit keyboard. Nothing I can do about that though. -

A quick glance you would have seen it was changed when we were updated on this from ASUS. Some resellers get air shipments still today since we have been selling them for years.
-
I'll try this when I get home. I have been delaying using my external monitors so I can get used to the lower res on the laptop.
I don't remember having any sound issues when I was using the HDMI. -
A) I'm not going to sugar coat it, the monitor is cheap. It might be only slightly better than the F3JP but I don't have an F3JP to compare to.
B) It is very quiet when not playing games. It's fairly quiet when playing games. As far as noise this laptop is good.
C) No backlit keyboard. Who really looks at their keyboard when they are typing these days (other than to adjust the hand position).

A quick glance at your graphic still shows Air...I am confused. As of the time of my original post your text also said Air. Are you saying when Xoticpc sells an ASUS laptop the warranty covers Air shipping both ways?Attached Files:

Confused? Just dont save the old image that you were using from ASUS, refresh your browser or something? lol -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Justin, I took it right off of your website, where it still exists on some of your models. Better double check.
Just trying to clear it up. What about my other question: "Are you saying when Xoticpc sells an ASUS laptop the warranty covers Air shipping both ways?" -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
Thanks for your interest Donald, not on new orders as you know. But many of us sellers that have been selling ASUS Ensemble laptops for a longer period of time are able to provide extra benefits to our customers in regard to warranty repair. If you simply clear your cache you will see the image was updated and you are holding onto a older image.
-
A) Probably similar to your ASUS laptop. I find the vertical viewing angle and contrast to be sub-par.
B) Very quiet -
Justin and Donald, You both are fine representatives of very quality companys. And your input to this lounge is very much appreciated by me. But in my opinion this back and forth communication is beneath both of you.
-
Contrast and viewing angles and resolution are pretty good and there is practically no ambient noise with basic use.
-
Considering my F3JP is 4 years old now that isn't what I wanted to hear. I'm surprised that the screen technology has basically not advanced since then considering it's something you're using at all times.
Seems the Acer 5942G and the Sony Vaio F series have the same issue. Are there actually any laptops out there with specs like the N61JQ (i7, higher end 5000 series Mobility, etc) that actually have good screens? Seems a strange thing to skimp on and not even have a viable upgrade for. -
Yeah I wish I could tell you otherwise
. I love everything about this laptop
except the screen quality. Even with the resolution it has. I'm still glad I got it though; the specs are just so awesome
-
Just for reference, here are some shots (taken with my SLR) of what my current screen looks like. The contrast is darker in the loading screen than it should be, but it gives you an idea of how different the brightness is at the bottom of the screen than the top. I mean currently I'm sat looking at it and the bottom of the screen ALWAYS looks over-bright and washed out unless I tilt the screen back more, but then the top starts to invert. The console shot shows how excessive the brightness is on a dark background and how even when it's over-bright at the bottom, it's STILL dark at the top.
Just posting these to get a guage of if it's really this bad as I can't imagine it having not improved at all...Attached Files:

I was wondering if this laptop will interface with my aud/vid reciever by using the hdmi out. Will I be able to hear audio from movies and other software players through my home theater speakers ? Thanks for the help.
-
I don't think it's that bad. Sitting maybe 2 ft away from the screen, I can notice a slight shift in gamma from the top of the screen vs. the bottom (of course this gets better as you sit farther and farther away). It's not as bad as your photos (thought I'm not sure why the screen goes from light to dark to light in your photo). The dynamic range is not so great on the A1; I think the colors look best with full brightness, but then the blacks are not very black. Maybe I'm being too picky; I think your laptop screen looks positively horrible lol.
-
Those are photos of an Asus F3JP, not the N61JQ. It was just for comparison as someone said screens haven't improved. I was just adding the pictures to make sure they knew just what this screen was like for comparison. So just to reassure myself, they aren't anywhere near that bad anymore? (on the N61 or otherwise)

The HDMI audio output shows up as another hardware playback device "Realtek HDMI Output." Depending on your software, you may or may not be able to choose HDMI as the audio output. You will always be able to change the current playback device (right-click speaker icon, playback devices, click HDMI output, click "default") to route all sounds to the HDMI output.
-
Oh thank god for that, was getting a little scared! Cheers for replying quickly!
-
waqas1988 took some nice photos for us: http://picasaweb.google.com/wahmad1988/ASUSN61JQA1#
His actually show the same stripe effect in your photo. I never noticed that in person though. -
Dammit, that is pretty crappy!
-
Yeah
. I'm spoiled by my LED-backlit iMac at work. It looks so much better.
-
Does this help? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpu_qF_cpzo#t=7m18s
-
The N61 is way better than that.
-
The reason I'm paranoid about the screen is because while you don't notice it doing web browsing and general desktop related things, it's made it impossible to play any games that are in the dark on this machine as you can imagine. I wouldn't even dream of trying Doom 3... glad to hear it's no-where near as bad, but I'd like to hear the experiences of someone that has tried games that are based in the dark just to make sure.
-
That's certainly useful but unfortunately the inversion is only noticeable on dark backgrounds, not bright ones like the Windows login screen. I'm sure someone's tried it by now though so I'll just wait for their input.
-
so if i change that setting in playback devices will I be able to hear a streaming video on my home theater speakers (like espn360.com) ?
-
Yes. All sounds that would normally play through your laptop speakers will play through your home theater instead (assuming it supports HDMI audio).
-
I started a new character on WoW and took him to level 20 last weekend. I played in many different areas where the room or tomb was dimly lit. I had no issues with the game.
I also installed and played the Crysis demo and everything looked really good on that.
This is a LED backlit display so the lighting is fairly consistent across the screen. There is a wash-out affect at certain angles due to the screen shielding (I believe).
I posted some pictures back on page 46 of this forum thread. I've reattached the pictures here. As you can see, with the flash hitting the screen of the laptop, the shield does a great job in stopping the glare. My LCD TV in the background doesn't do a good job.
Even with the dark background and the brightness set to 50%, there is a good contrast between the background and the icons. This is at a close distance to the screen which looking up from the bottom (where I find a good amount of washed out image).Attached Files:

The screen cover is simply a glass plate. The reason you don't see a glare in your photos is because you have tilted the screen slightly (the camera flash reflects slightly above the camera and does not get captured by the CCD). Your TV in the background has a matte finish (no glass cover) which diffuses the flash into all directions (not a simple specular reflection you would get with a glass cover); that is why you can see the glare on the TV. The "washing out" of colors on the ASUS display is caused by the particular LCD technology used: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD#Twisted_nematic_.28TN.29
-
ok thanks, wanted to make sure that would work because i'll be using this heavily for home theater use as well as mobile stuff. anyone else try hooking this up to their home theater system via hdmi out and having success ?
-
ah man i ordered this bad boy on newegg first thing this morning and it still says its in the 'charged' stage. Now i dont think it will get here by Friday like i was hoping so i could work on it. im thinking of canceling the order ?
this is straight from newegg's help page:
Due to an unexpected power outage this morning caused by Southern California Edison, our Customer Service Center is currently experiencing technical difficulties. Our Telephone lines recently came back up but Live Chat and Email services are still down.
As a result of the outage this morning, our phone lines are very backed up and you may experience an extended wait time. We apologize for the inconvenience, and will restore full services as soon as possible.
NO NEWEGG SAY IT AIN'T SO
!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU FAILED ME !!!!!! -
If you have a Microcenter by you they stock this laptop
-
I fail to see why people continuously purchase from newegg.
-
I second everything stevedogg said. And I will add that you could find specs similar to this with an upgraded screen and I'm sure you have seen them. But when you went to check out your cart you could not pull the trigger because of the high price. We can all wring our hands about the screen. Most people are not happy with it. But you knew what you were ordering and I bet you won't return it.
-
I will be putting a better wireless card in this laptop (one that supports 5 ghz band) Is this something I can easily pull out or do i need to open up the machine to get at it ?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
The wireless card is easy to access through the bottom of the laptop. As long as you can operate a screw driver it is a less than 5 minute job.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
You need to open it up, it is easy, but when you do you will only find 2 antenna leads.
-
Actually I have had good experiences with newegg, and if I order before 11 i usually get it in 2 days with standard shipping.
-
ok cool. ill be getting the intel 6200 centrino. i think it is the 2 antennae one.
-
My X1 screen looks nothing like. I'm not saying its a great screen but it sure does not look like that.
-
Their price isn't so good right now. $1099.99 + $14.83 shipping + tax for the X1. On Amazon, you can get an A1 for $1066.03 + free shipping + no tax (savings of $151.91, and you get the 2 yr warranty and 500 GB hard drive). Unfortunately, you may be waiting because of stock problems (I think many resellers are having stock issues with the A1). I was lucky and only had to wait 2 days for it to ship out, and a few more to receive it
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Correct. It still supports 5.0, and is cheaper. I just didn't want you spending more than necessary on the 6300.
