Thanks for clearing it out, I was wondering why ASUS doesn't provide driver for their device.
Sorry I didn't take the card out first time. Now I am looking at it now, it is the same card AR5B95 by AzureWave in the same picture of wasqas1988 taken. I tried taking several shots of the card but don't come out clear enough, damn my aging camera...
BTW, what is the original net card you have on your N61JQ stevedogg?
EDIT: Now I look into hardware IDS it is PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002B&SUBSYS_10891A3B&REV_01
Description: Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter
I wonder why the card is not being recognized as AR5B95. Or could it be AR9285 with wrong label?
-
-
1) AR9285 with the wrong label
2) AR5B95 with the wrong hardware ID
3) AR5B95 with the wrong driver INF file (improperly matching hardware ID to device model) -
I have just taken some clearer shots this time. With front and back shot of the AR5B95.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/voodoo_realm/DSCF0564.jpg
I'll try to edit inf file and see if I could get AR5B95 installed correctly. My card is telling me to lol
EDIT: There is virtually no driver support for AR5B95 at the moment. The driver on ASUS site is actually the most recent one (dated October 2009) I can find after googling. I need to find some other win7 driver for AR5B95...
EDIT 2: After reinstalling driver still getting AR9285 on device manager, but out of curiosity I took a download benchmark and this is what I got.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/voodoo_realm/AR9285driver.jpg
Funny thing is I usually get around 15000 kbp/s wireless download speed. I'll try it out morning and afternoon time and see if I could replicate the same download speed. -
Maybe the AR9285 and AR5B95 are the same card /shrug. FWIW, the Azurewave part number is AW-NE785H (blacked out on your photo and partially obscured by the sticker waqas1988's photo).

But the resolution is killing all these specs. -
-
Hope the price of this will come under $1000 in March '10

That $999 is for the X1 model, not the A1. A1 goes generally for $1065.
Though, you can get the A1 for about $980 off reputable EBAY dealers, using BING 8% cash back (this is for US consumers, not sure how international would work). -
It is still available at this price for those of you that can't wait for the A1 to come back in stock. -
-
The 2-year warranty is manufacturers, not resellers - so yes, they will have the warranty. The reseller I purchased from had a 14-day no questions asked return policy as well, which IS specific to them.
Any questions about specifics purchases, though, should be directed at the seller.
The main difference I would imagine is that folks who like the hands-on post-sale care will find that going with one of the resellers here will be worth the extra $$. -
So what I've read so far the A1 is sold out at gentech, xotic and powernotebooks? I really wish returning my x1 hadn't taken so long, cause now I have the money for the a1.

I'm not sure why it's listed wrong under the device manager. I haven't tried hunting down better drivers since for me there is really no need. I don't have a router that does 5.0 Ghz.
Like I said, I'd still recommend the intel 5100 or even the new models 6xxx models. -
-
Most definitely!
-----------------------------
ASUS did underestimate the demand for usb 3 and dx 11 in a sub $1000 Core i7 laptop...
I still can't belive a core i7 quad, dx11, usb 3.0, led laptop is only $1000
Try to price a dell xps 16 with the same specs its like $1400 -
To those wanting switchable graphics:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220706
There's an N71 with a Core i3 and GT325 switchable for $899. Maybe later revisions of the N61 and N71 with Core i5 and dual Core i7 are coming with switchable graphics.
Although I should probably post this in the N71 forums as it is a 17-incher -
Just looking into the TDP that the cooler on this thing has to deal with,
CPU + Chipset: 48.5 watts
CPU: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=43122
Chipset: http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=43181
ATI: 5730 26 watts
http://www.amd.com/us/products/notebook/graphics/ati-mobility-hd-5700/Pages/hd-5730-specs.aspx
Total: 74.5 watts.
Is the HM55 attached to the cooler, or a cooler? Assuming its TDP is so low (3.5 watts) its probably just open to the air.
I'm just getting at 74.5 watts is quite a bit of heat, I'm amazed that the overall review from you folks (or the first 77 pages) is that it doesn't get too hot. Which is good to hear. Just for so many watts in such a little area it seems like any laptop with this cpu and gpu would burn. -

The air blow out from left side of vent get warm to very warm, but not to the level of being uncomfortable if I placed my hand covering vent when games like guild war, mass effect and left 4 dead 2 is running.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/voodoo_realm/DSCF0566.jpg
It looks like the heatsink is made of copper, connected with 2 heatpipes, then the 2 heatpipes connected to GPU and additional heatpipe place on top of GPU (so a total of 3 heatpipes). All 3 heatpipes all go to big fan. -
-
One more thing I have noticed from looking at the back of this thing... the air inlet is not right under the fan, but rather slits along the bottom near the hard drive and along the front. I see two advantages.
One: you can't as easily block all of the vents, if your lap is covering the vent over the hard drive, I assume the air will flow in the other vent next to the hard drive and vice versa.
Two: this airflow design forces the air to move over the main board of the laptop itself allowing a bit more cooling, cool air is sucked over the main board and all components, and then forced through the heat fins.
I also noticed that plastic cover in the area near the fan is bulged out a little bit, allowing more air to flow into the fan, unlike most laptops that give like 1.5mm for air to flow.
I'm noticing this all because my old dell had all of its air inlets right under the CPU fan, and when you sit it on your lap or a pillow the little vent is covered right up, and the poor thing gets absolutely burning hot if you don't notice your blocking all of its air. I have a bad habit of using my laptop when laying on the ground, so my carpeting blocks all of the vents, so I usually have one hand propping up the side of the laptop so it can get cool air. lol. -
That's US keyboard. And there is some wave pattern brushed on top cover which doesn't shown clearly on newegg photo.
One thing for certain, this thing looks sleek -
I think the Amazon photo is the British keyboard. I see a pound symbol (£) along the top of the keyboard on the number three. I'm sure you wouldn't get that if you ordered in the United States, probably just an old stock photo.
-
My bad, I thought we were talking about newegg photo lol
The keyboard layout also resemble of english/french keyboard in Canada. -
I will wait the N71JQ-X1 to be available from either Amazon.Ca or Newegg.ca. -
Im debating on wether to get the IC diamond compound or not, how many people actually have done this? I will be using this laptop for school and gaming, but i heard it stays pretty cool itself.
-
I got it but I haven't received my laptop yet. It's supposed to be here tomorrow though and I'll be posting some temps if you're interested. Can't say whether or not I'll be able to put the temps up tomorrow or not, but I should be able to sometime in the next few days.
-
-
What are the makes of different hardware components sitting inside N61JQ-A1 and does it same for each and every N61JQ-A1 ?
1. HDD (Seagate, WD, etc....)
2. RAM (Kingston, Corsair, etc ...)
3. LCD (LG, Samsung, etc ...)
4. DVD Drive (LG, Samsung, etc ...)
5. Speakers
etc ... -

I don't Know about the other parts... that would require my laptop actually being here... which its not yet -
So I got a strange little issue now. I formatted and installed my own copy of Windows 7 ultimate and for some reason certian games and GPU-Z are reporting my video card as having 0 mb of Ram. Anyone know of a way to fix this as it wasn't an issue before the new install.
-
And its always good to keep a laptop as cool as possible by any convenient means necessary. -
Alright thanks for the comments, ill definitely get the IC compound, one more thing is i havnt seen much talk about what games people have been able to play. Its hard for me to keep up what graphics card is good now because the numbers are so different. would this laptop be able to play diablo III when it comes out? (i know its hard without requirement specs) how about batman asylum on high settings
-
-
For batman asylum, I'm going to guess based on the requirements (I don't own it) that it should be able to run it just fine at high. -
I really want to order this laptop the only thing that scares me is the 1366x768 resolution. How do you guys like the resolution, it just seems so small.
-
-
I think everyone that has ordered this laptop has debated if they could live with this screen. But at $1000 something has to be compromised.
P.S I love this machine! -
I'm thinking of using this at school. Would this be ideal to use at school and be able to fit on a desk?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
What size is the desk?

The good news from Seattle ( NO INCOME TAX! ) -
I was expecting over 3 hours. Maybe Battery Saving will be better.
I have 3 tests to go and then I will retry 3 of them to verify the results.
Remember gamers and video editors this is surfing. -
And that is really great info on those battery times ally, that's really helpful to everybody here. Less testing I have to do when I get mine, I'll just be stealing you're info to determine which mode to use when I'm on battery. -
