Win7 also has a color calibration procedure:
http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/01/07/windows-7-calibrate-your-display
To get the best look from my A1, I used these settings:
1) 100% monitor brightness
2) Gamma all the way down
3) Red and green at 100%, blue reduced maybe 1/4 of the way
Note that the gamma setting doesn't really matter for laptops since viewing angle has a much stronger effect on gamma; get it close to correct, and tweak the angle of the lid every time you move the laptop around (to get the best look).
Edit: If you find that the settings don't stick on reboot, do the following:
Right click desktop => Screen Resolution => Advanced Settings => Color Management
Make sure "Use my settings for this device" is checked

Not from the 1GB piece no...that is the first version and it is virtually worthless.
Turbo Memory 2.0 was much better.
However neither work with the ASUS N61JQ-A1 because it has the Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset +ICH10. Turbo memory only works with ICH9M/ICH9M -
Thanks! -
I know this is a relatively unimportant question, but how is the webcam quality? Most asus notebooks have a 1.3 mega pixel webcam and the quality is just so so. Has anyone noticed an improvement in picture quality with the 2.0 mega pixel webcam??

i don´t realy know about it, but could the snow leopard work in the n61jq?
has anybody tried that, i would like to know how to do it if its possible, cause i need to do some mathlab and ive seen it working better in the mac os, any experience with that? -
You want snow leopard. Go buy a mac. Macbook or MacBook Pro. Pick your poison. -
Ok for people interested in battery life I will try 1 power setting per night and report my findings. The screen will stay set on the factory settings. I will just surf.
I will start on the top of the power setting options and work my way down.
So tonight was power4gear entertainment.
Batttery started at 97%. After 2 hours 9 min. battery was 6% and automatically went into hibernation.
Tomorrow I will try High performance ( non power4gear).
In an earlier post I answered someones question about battery life. I said I was getting about 2 hours 20 min. While I was not pulling that # out of my a!! as suggested. I did use the time left on the battery meter to come up with the time. That's why I said " ABOUT". -
Thanks for posting them, but I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the X1. Amazon Prime Trial ftw!

To all the owner of N61JQ, do you have some sort of whinning sound coming from notebook in quiet background? I would like to know if mine is normal....
-
This is a machine. Machines make noise. And if you concentrate real hard and focus on trying to hear something, maybe put your ear up to it. Well you might hear some type of noise.
Please let's not turn this into the Sony F series Owners Lounge. N61JQ= Whisper Quiet! -
Twice so far, some of the hotkeys have stopped working along with the OSD (I'm not using the ATKOSD2 with 3D effects). Rebooting fixes the problem. Anyone else notice this? Some of them work (brightness, screen blank), but others don't (volume, mute, touchpad disable, calculator, etc.).
-
-
Maybe I have developed sensitive ears over years? lol But there's definitely fault in some gateway laptops, it's a well known problem if you look through many posts of them.
I don't put my ears up to this laptop to find sound. Perhaps I'll ask my friends what they think without hinting them the whinning sound. Thanks for the input. -

I have tried two games so far. Guild War and Left 4 Dead 2.
Guild War runs really well, 60+ fps in big crowded area (Kamadan city district 1), with native resolutio, full settings and 4x anti-aliasing.
Left 4 Dead 2 plays smooth too (judging by naked eyes), with native resolution, full settings except anti-aliasing bumped down to 2x. I can notice slight lag if I tried to push full settings when fighting huge horde of zombies. I'll give overclock a try later if I could find some reliable tool to monitor gpu temp first
Going to try some other games later such as mass effect. I'm in total excitement with this awesome looking and great performance laptop right now. -
Those who own a Asus N61JQ-JX021X. Is your memory (RAM) compartment cover sticking out? Or is it just mine?!

Does anyone know the model # of a good blu-ray writer that I could install to replace my DVD Multi. I have been looking but all the ones I come across have been discontinued

Will those fit flush in to the N61JQ-X1? -
I want to buy a network adapter that can accept 2.4 Ghz and 5Ghz frequencies. I was wondering if I could just buy one that you can put in the PCI Express slot or plug into a USB port. I only ask because I don't really know how to take apart my computer and remove the default wireless card. If I don't remove the default wireless card and insert one into a USB port or the PCI express slot, will it still work?

I wonder how much scratch resistant would be the rubberized coating.
I was at a shop today looking for a bag for my N71JQ. I saw there a N61Vn was being displayed.
On the displayed device, it seems that somebody scratched the surface near to touchpad. So I could see the plastic under the rubber coating.
It looks like the rubber coating is around 10mm thick.
I don't know how resistant would it be to scratching.
I guess we have to be careful. -

I will be installing the Atheros card this weekend. I'm having some compatibility issues between the intel 5100 and my DLink DIR-655. I'm getting packet loss when connecting at N speeds.
Donald from PowerNotebooks was sent me the original card when I told him about my connection issues. Awesome service BTW! -

It doesn't work point for point. Rep points are earned by the combination of number of posts, plus the number of reps from other users, and the number of rep points that user has. Since you have 1 rep yourself, it is going to take several posts plus other reps from other users to move the point count up.
You have to spread your rep points around. You cannot give multiple reps to the same person without giving rep to several others first. -

Oh man, I just got an email from GenTech PC saying that they're shipping my N61JQ-A1 within 3 business days. I could have sworn other people in this thread have said they ship real quick, hope it gets here soon! Maybe my Starcraft 2 beta key will be emailed to me the same day the laptop comes.

OMG i found the Asus N61JQ-JX021X today for $1624 at a retail store!! I bought it for $1899.
Ah well, they gave me a free mouse which was worth $100. Sort of the same. lol -
Does N61JQ-A1 has touch buttons for multimedia access ?
XoticPC has listed this feature but could not found it at other resellers site.

We all know the well respected resellers that are recommended in these forums. I wish I would have been aware of them before I ordered my X1 from Newegg.
That being said if price is the most important factor for you it looks like more online retailers are starting to sell the A1. If you are into Bing cashback you might want to search the A1 on Bing. I saw one listing for $999 with 8% cashback.
Personally I would stick with a trusted name. But you might want to check it out.
No disrespect to our reseller friends . -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Yeow! Do you have a link to the $999 with 8% bing cashback?
That is well below what we have to pay for them...I would like to buy from them instead of ASUS
Seriously!
