Backlit keyboard. learn to type without looking at the keyboard then you woudn't need one
Color of the machine is not important and it appears black to begin with I can't tell mine is brown.
Switchable graphics would be nice but then it takes away from the power of the i7 720qm
Mine came with 1333 ram
And as other said go buy from another manufacturer who can supply your needs or wait for a new model from asus and please stop trolling the thread with negitivities. -

Sure it is the truth, but you could say the same about any other laptop. Oh no, wish it had this CPU or that resolution or a hard drive as big as whatever. If all of those factors you posted are the things you were looking for in a laptop, you won't find it here because this is not the laptop for your needs. Your time is better spent at the laptop recommendation forum where they'll point you to what you really should be looking at.

Does your N61JQ comes with Seagate 500GB 7200rpm ST9500420AS or ST9500420ASG (G-sensor version)?
I have bought ST9500420AS six months ago. It is very nice and very fast drive. The only complain I have is that it does some strange clicking sounds every few days.
I have Seagate 7200rpm 320GB ST9320423AS drive also but it does not do any such sound.
I want to shift the Seagate ST9500420AS from my old ASUS M50Vm to my new N71JQ-A1 when it arrives.
I am still waiting for mine. It has been shipped on 11th of February. It can still take few more days to reach Germany.
USPS does not provide too much info on their tracking site except that it has been shipped out of USA on 13th of February. -
I have been following this thread and thought I'd chime in.
I got my N61JQ-A1 from Amazon.com; despite saying "pre-order" on the page, they actually shipped it pretty quickly (ordered Feb. 4, shipped Feb. 6). I have been happy with the laptop so far.
I'm sure you've heard this all before, but the laptop is well-constructed. The hinges are sturdy with no "floating" protrusions (like the power plug on new Vaios which can break). The keyboard is pleasing to type on (more like a Macbook than a "clicky" keyboard), and the separate numpad is a big plus. The touchpad can be annoying as-is; I had to disable zooming and touch clicking because they often activated accidentally. Two-finger scrolling works decently, though it can be flaky.
The display quality is so-so. Resolution is sufficient for me (the 1366x768 display has the same dot pitch as my 20" 1680x1050 desktop flat panel). The horizontal viewing angle is quite good, but vertical is very narrow; you have to tilt the display just right to avoid washout of the colors. I found the screen to be too bright and too blue, but these problems were fixed using the color management in Win7 (just reduce the gamma and blue).
I didn't like all the software and bloat that came with the laptop, so I formatted and installed Win7 Pro x64 from scratch. Most of the drivers are on ASUS' website, though I had to grab one from the drivers disk (I think it was the USB 3.0 driver). I have minimal ASUS software installed: only Express Gate, Power4Gear, and Wireless Console 3. Note that, if you don't install the ATKOSD2 driver, you won't get any notifications when you switch power profiles with Power4Gear, but IMO the simpler OSD without ATKOSD2 is worth it.
Performance-wise, the laptop really delivers. The CPU benchmarked a score of 12.2 on Fritz Chess Benchmark (compared to 7.1 for my Athlon X2 6000+ 3.0 GHz dual core desktop). This benchmark pushes all the cores to 100% and is good to compare dual-core vs. quad-core processors, for example. I haven't run a graphics benchmark, but from what other people have posted, the card performs about equivalently to my desktop card (Radeon HD 4670) with a 3DMark06 score of ~8000. My Windows 7 Experience Index is identical to the others posted in this thread (processor: 6.9, memory: 5.9, graphics: 6.7, gaming graphics: 6.7, hard disk: 5.9). Battery life is nothing spectacular: about 2-2.5 hours in quiet office mode doing active web browsing.
I use the a Zalman ZM-NC2000 cooler, and the maximum temperature of any of the cores during several consecutive Fritz Chess Benchmark runs (to push the cores to 100%) was 72 C (this is factory spec without any special thermal compound, from Amazon.com). I did not query the GPU temp. The keyboard area stays very cool with the cooler running; the back/left exhaust vent on the laptop gets hot under heavy use, as others have mentioned.
Overall, I'm happy with the laptop. I hope this review helps some of you decide whether or not to buy it. -
Just curious about this, If I wanted to change my DVD to a Blu-Ray Burner, anyone know what model would fit?

Nearly any standard slimline drive will work fine. You only need to replace the bezel from your stock drive to your new drive, then install it in your machine.
(There are a number of drives on the market from LG, Sony etc..) -

Justin and Paladin, can you guys let me know what is the US equivalent of this variation? I am thinking of ordering, but Dixons stupid naming scheme is concerning me! Even the screen size is showing 15.6, I thought the N61 was a 16"?

Mounting brackets, obviously need replaced when upgrading drives.
As for the US variation close to what is advertised there, it is hard to say with their description. I like the "large 640GB RAM". That is allot of Ram -
Hey you guys...I just got the blue screen of death on my n61jq-a1 for the first time. It's been about a week since I got it. I was just on facebook commenting a friend's wall. Anybody have this problem?

Don't think they were anything to worry about as it has never happened while I was actually doing anything I'd consider important but keep an eye on it forsure and if it continues try to note the file name in the error or the error code. The file will usually be a .sys file and see if you can get an update for that driver if that's the problem. -
What software should I use to check and see if mine came with 1066 or 1333 ram? Thanks

Just ran CPU-Z and seems mine also came with 1333 ram.

Yeah, two things I notice. No flash support in 64 bit windows explorer. If i switch between wireless and ethernet, i need to close the browser and re open a new one. My slow surfing was coming from switching the two. I've been running the 32 bit browser now and its fine.
I am curious tho - anyone have good dv capture software without all the editing stuff. I found some freeware, but it doesn't break the clips up and only goes to 4gig and stops... -
Also, to the ones who were asking, the EDGE was the name given to my pimped out m860tu, but alas, it is in need of a graphics card replacement and out of warranty which is why I have no problem with a decent laptop with a great warranty now -

Hey guys. Got my N61JQ today. On it as we speak. So far so good. Currently burning the recovery disc that requires 4 blank dvds

I just installed WoW and played it on maxed out settings and it runs smooth as can be with no lag whatsoever. Going to get a newer game when I have the extra time. Can't Decide what to get. I am thinking about the newest COD or maybe just waiting on the new C&C to come out.

As a new owner of this notebook, should i be doing anything first like clean install, remove bloatware, remove unwanted programs etc?

For anyone buying from Dixons or PC World, a heads up is they only offer 1 years warranty. They have their own stupid code, but are the cheapest!

Im suppose to have 640GB HD, but there's only 581GB. There are two partitions. C: = 149GB and D: = 432GB.
Where is the other 59GB!? -
What windows will give you for 640GB drive is around 596GB formatted.
If you are interested to know why then you can read about it more here: http://www.diskview.com/disk-size-discrepancy.htm
So what you see is 581GB which means there are around 15GB missing.
Actually, these are also not missing. Around 15GB are hidden from the viewer. This 15GB contains the recovery partition. -
there's a hidden partition that stores the recovery image and about 40gb is lost in formatting
-
Thanks for clarifying that lol
I noticed the base of the latop (underneath) one of the panels is not 'flush' with the base. It actually poppin up or stickin out. Is that the same with yours? -
Good news guys!, apparently ATI (AMD) will release a new mobility catalyst driver 10.3 next month and from what I gather it will be available through AMD directly.
FTA: "AMD is committed to providing monthly driver updates for mobile GPUs"
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3743&p=5 -
Wow that is good news. I know a lot of people on these boards don't buy laptops with an ATI GPU simply because of their lack of driver updates. It looks like they've really stepped up to put those user's minds at rest. This is great news for everybody here.
-
Indeed it is very good news.
In the past whenever I had a notebook with ATI Graphic card, I had to rely on Mobility Modder to convert desktop drivers to intall them on notebook.
