    Frequently Asked Questions
(Some of these Q&A's were copied from this Lounge, And some were provided by owners).

Q: What is the difference between the N61JQ-A1 and the N61JQ-X1?
A: The A1 comes with a 500gb HDD and a 2 year warranty. The X1 comes with a 320gb HDD & 1 year Warranty. Both come with a 1 year Accidental Damage Warranty in the US & Canada only.

Q: Can I use an external monitor with this Laptop?
A: You can run 1 external monitor and the laptop display (extended or cloned) or you can run 2 external monitors (one D-SUB, VGA and one HDMI) and no laptop display (extended or cloned). With an external adapter, such as ViBook Plus, your laptop will support up to six external monitors with the adapters using a USB Hub, plus one external monitor and the laptop screen (or two external monitors without using the laptop screen) for a total of eight screens all running in extend mode.

Q: Does it support switchable graphics?
    A: No it does not!

Q:How does the ATI 5730 compare with other graphics cards?
A: It is almost equivalent to a Radeon HD 4670 desktop card. 3DMark06 score is 8000. It seems that a single 8800 GT card is faster than this card. In terms of screen resolution, as this is a lower resolution it would run similarly compared to a 8800GT@ 1650x1080 for example. Use this link for comparison. Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730

Q: How well Can it run heavy photoshop and adobe CS4 suite?
A: It should be able to handle all of that with ease. If the images you are working with are extremely large, you may want to upgrade the RAM. Other then that, the graphic capabilities and processing power are fantastic for the price. The Core i7 processor has a very powerful integrated floating point unit and the ATI video card supports OpenCL (SDK needs to be installed though).

    Q: Does eyefinity work?
A: No. The N61 and most other notebooks out there don't have the horsepower to run games at the extended resolutions offered by eyefinity. If you read up on it more, ATI is trying to make it abundantly clear that eyefinity is a purely optional feature and it's up to the companies that use the 5xxx series chips if they want to implement it or not. On slower cards it's a nice solution for productivity software, etc. that doesn't require super pixel-crunching power. The lack of lag jumping windows between screens is certainly a nice bonus.

Q:What about the low screen resolution?
A: Obviously this is subjective. Most Owners report some dissatisfaction with the resolution and or viewing angles. But almost all will follow this up with they otherwise love this laptop. If you asked everyone that has a complaint about the screen if they would return it most would say no. I am in the minority when I say the screen does not bother me. The screen is the main concern of anyone interested in this laptop. But you can't get everything for $1000. If the screen is at the top of your needs list this laptop is not for you. Only you can decide if you can live with this resolution. I suggest going to a store and looking at a similar screen. This resolution is not uncommon in this size screen and you should be able to find one to look at.

    Q: What about gaming performance?
A: Most reviews so far report exellent performance on high settings when plugged in, not as good on battery.

Q: What about the Battery life?
A: Generally you get about 2 hours with a 45 min. swing either way depending on the power mode and your usage.

Q:Can I do upgrades without voiding the warranty?
A: You can upgrade the Hard drive, memory, optical drive and wireless card without voiding the warranty.

Q: Will it void the warranty if I apply thermal paste to the cpu or gpu?
A: Yes, It will void your Warranty unless applied by an authorized ASUS reseller.

Q: Is the RAM on the N61JQ 1066 or 1333?
A: It is supposed to be 1066 but sometimes is shipped with 1333.

Q: What about the wireless performance?
A:The stock wireless card is a low grade card. But it seems to perform real well with no drops. It connects in 2.4GHz but not in 5.0GHz. If your router supports 5.0GHz it is easy and inexpensive to upgrade this card.

He is in Singapore, thus the strange model #.

Mine is running great! I love this thing. I am so glad I returned my HP DV8T
and switched to this N61JQ-X1. I was so hesitant with the lower screen resolution on this thing. But honestly I can't tell much difference between this and all the 1080p's Iv'e had.
Most people will want the A1 model for the larger hard drive. But if you are like me and planning to upgrade to ssd eventually than just save the money and get the X1 for $999.
One problem with ordering the X1 or A1 from newegg. The Wifi card does not
support 5ghz. If your router does you might want to get it from the resellers so you can upgrade to the intel 5100.
I wish someone could give me some links for some tests I could run so I could post them. Not being a gamer I have never really looked into any benchmark tests.

A SuperPi 32M test would be interesting if you're looking for tests to perform. Most other tests have already been done, by other people, though. You could also run HD Tune to find out how fast your hard drive is, if you're curious.

The Wifi card seems to work fine. But some of the newer routers support both 2.4 and 5.0 ghz. This card only supports 2.4 ghz. If your router doesn't support 5.0 then it won't matter. Mine does so I'm going to look into changing my Wifi card to the Intel 5100. If you do upgrade get the Intel 5100 not the Intel 5300. The 5300 supports 3 antenas and this laptop only has 2 so it would be a waste.

Hmm...I am trying to find my router right now. It was a high end router at the time I bought it...1.5 years ago. I think it supports Wireless N...I bet it has 5ghz support.

Not necessarily. I think most of the 5.0's started coming out about a year ago and not all the high end ones have it.

Aye...well I will just keep the stock card then. With 5ghz...it will transfer faster ? less drop outs ?

    http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wirelessfaqs/f/5ghz-gear.htm

I think people are making far too much out of the wireless card. I ended up paying for the intel upgrade because all my machines have intel wireless cards so it makes it easier for me to manage. The default wireless card in the laptop should be fine.

The memory marks seem slow to me, but again, I might just have sweet RAM. Can you run CPU-Z, go to the memory tab, and screenshot it? That'd be helpful (I might even have an idea to get more performance... maybe).

You can set your monitor to any resolution you wish and see it exactly... or you could use the Web Developer Toolbar to set just your browser to any resolution.

Ok, but The only way I can upload these to this forum is to downgrade them. You can't upload more than 585kb. With the glossy back it is hard to get a shot of it. I will say I like it alot. Dark brown with swirls.Under some lighting you see the brown, other lighting it looks more black.
With the screen shot keep in mind it is downgraded too, with some glare.
I will keep saying it until I'm blue in the face. My opinion is that no one will have a problem with the screen resolution.

So my first thought was "Wow, those timings are awful". However, after researching DDR3 RAM, they're actually fairly common. The RAM is running in dual channel (good sign), I had suspected it wasn't.

Basically (from my limited knowledge), the RAM seems to do alright for large transfers but kinda fail on smaller ones. I'm pretty sure this is related to the timings. The RAM would be better for things like video editing than it would for things like gaming and number crunching (I think).

If it were a desktop computer I'd drop the multiplier on the RAM and bring the timings down. I don't know if it's possible to do that on a laptop. Whenever I order mine (still deciding) I'll check it out and post my results here.

What I'm talking about is technically overclocking, but not really since dropping the multiplier is underclocking (but lowering the timings is overclocking) ...

Regarding temps... has anyone tried Rivatuner?

Would you recomend upgrading the ram to 1333 . Or just doubling the 1066 to 8gb.

Thanks very much and rep added! My concern with resolution is I am replacing my desktop with it. My current screen size is 24" and 1920X1080, so it is a considerable downgrade! Been trying to convince myself this is perfect for me.

I just wish the UK sites would hurry up and get stock!

Honestly, you really won't tell a difference between the 1066 to the 1333. Technically speaking yeah, it'll be faster. But it is minimally faster. Not worth the price difference.

I"ll be picking one of these up in a little while, I want to read a few more reviews and make sure there aren't any major issues.

I received mine on monday. Haven't really had a chance to test anything properly, but was wondering how is the temperature on yours? Like I said I didn't have time to install realtemp so I don't know the exact temperatures, but just running it for 15-20 minutes made my desk burning hot. Is it the same on yours?

I've had a toshiba qosmio for about two weeks now, it's running on i5 and it doesn't get hot even after few hours.

Upgrading the ram to 1333 mhz won't make much difference and they actually cost the same as 1066. So if you are going to double it, it'll cost you around $400 and might as well get 1333 mhz.

I want to do the same thing or at least get one 4gb module, but I'm not sure if it's going to play nice with the other 2gb that is there since I'm sure it's a different manufacturer and everything. Any ideas?

    Great...Same with N71JQ too.
Seems like i7 processor is the contributor for such heat.

More the heat => Less the life of laptop and its the primary cause not to consider such over heated laptops :(

I know... Just can't believe there can be so much difference in heat between i5 and i7, considering there is not THAT much difference in performance... I'll probably end up getting a good cooler like one of the Zalman or Rosewill ones... See if that helps...

And on a plus side it does come with 2 years warranty...

The difference between duel core and quad core cpus is so small because of the nature of multiple cpus and programs that can take advantage of multiple cpus. Basically if you're not doing a lot of rendering or encoding you're not going to seem much of a difference in performance. The turbo boost tech in the i7 and i5s help but unless an app is lends itself to multiple cpus you're not going to get much benefit out of it.

Here is an old article that can do a better job at showing the difference than I can. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000942.html

Also I'm pretty sure that the i7 QM models are going to be going away (Just a gut feeling). Like you said they run too hot and don't give you much in return. At least not yet.

But the alternative from Asus was N61JA-A1 with EXACTLY same config+price with i5-430M and blue-ray rom. But XoticPC saying Asus has discontinued the model @ USA :D

Again i5-430M is like i3 processor unless you are going for next upgrade to i5-520M (decent processor). But the upgrade price is $255 which is MUCH higher than the processor price ($225) itself :D

the i5-430 is not like i3 processors, i3 processor do not support turbo boost at all. The i5-430 can reach 2.53 ghz with turbo boost, its not such a big boost but its a pretty powerful processor. I would not pay 250 neither 225 for a very little real case scenarios improvements..

That is why if you can wait, you always wait. There is always something better around the corner. I'm pretty sure ASUS will have an i5 equivalent of this model within a couple months.

Which model did you get? Mine is not getting hot at all. The heat expells out the side so I don't get why it would heat your desk. I have mine on my lap with no pad and it is not hot. My cores are running at about 60. Running crysis demo it ran between 68-75. Here is a screen shot right after the game.

    Guys..
do you think the 1366x768 is a good excuse to keep me away from this laptop?
I mean, it seems a pretty low resolution for 16 inch laptop like this one. What do u think?

I can hardly wait until mine is delivered. Loading up a couple VMs, Photoshop, and compiling at a fraction of the time I'm used to.

Not to mention running all my games and max res. (most of the games I play are a couple of years old).

I'm wondering how hot does the i7 820 and 920 get then... You could probably fry an egg on your desk near the vents.

I'll post my temperatures once I get realtemp on it.

Depends on what you're using it for. In my case about 80% of the time it will be hooked up to external monitors. If you buy it at Powernotebooks they have an upgrade that will allow you to run it with two external monitors and the laptop display. That's pretty much all the screen estate anyone needs :).

Forget about the screen resolution it is not a problem at all. And acually you will find that a lot of 16 inch models have this resolution. If you find something else you don't like about it than don't buy it. But don't pass on it because of the screen.
