Well I configured throttlestop to work at 2,4Ghz when gaming and now I t doesnt go above 85max There is no noticable performance lost so its great! I might overclock the GPU as it has excellent temps (never more than 74C) to get even more juice out of this baby
-
Ive overclocked a fair bit, gpu temperatures hardly move even after oc.
My cpu also reaches 90c when all 4 cores boost.
2.8 is the max boost frequency when all 4 cores are active, this is when the huge temps occur, so try reducing this default value a tad. -

It seems that my GT 555M is now GT 635M as seen by NVIDIA control panel and the device manager. o:
-
Nice signature format both moved from dell to asus too. -
I got this beauty last month and have been toying with it.
My grouse is that the keyboard is kinda jumpy and feels weird.
Level keys usually make me press the wrong'uns .
My biggest problem is the lettering on keys.
They are so thin that my old eyes do not make out letters when I am using it at night.
More later.
But it sure packs a punch and is very powerful machine.
Can anyone help me with removing bloatware?
TIA

The volume fluctuations in music are really annoying me, why in the world did B&O put there names to this!! Any bass and the volume attenuates grrr, volume is up and down like tower bridge. I suppose the average Joe wouldn't be bothered, but it really annoys me. Thank god i have a usb sound card.
I prefer my old inspiron 6400 audio. They were not as bassy, however the bass on this is unusable to me anyway, have to turn it right down. At least the inspiron could actually power its speakers correctly.
Rant over. -
Found how to stop it, sound is crap though lol, no bass, useless
1) Right click on the volume icon in the System Tray
2) Select "Playback devices"
3) Double click on "Speakers"
4) Click the Enhancements tab
5) Check "Disable all sound effects"
6) Click OK
7) If you are playing any sound/music, stop it for a few seconds, then try again.
Excellent. -
hi guys can someone tell me what is the best gt555m driver for overclocking and performance?

I have bought the N55SF on 1 Oct 2011, upgraded the OS to Window 7 Professional and increased memory to 8 GB. Everything worked fine until last month it hung up occasionally.
On 29 Dec, it finally failed to turn on the monitor and the screen was black. I sent it to the Singapore Service Centre and was learnt from the technician later on 6 Jan 2012 that he simply refreshed the BIOS and put the monitor screen back to work. I collected it back home on the same day.
However to my greatest disappointment the same problem happened again on 10 Jan morning, just 3 days after the warranty repair.
I am sending it for warranty complaint again today and hope that they can find out why such a high performance computer can fail so easily within first 3months of use.
Asus owes me and their users an answer to their product quality and service standard. -
N55SF-S2276V
On the 19/11/11 I bought the above specified laptop. As the first laptop I bought from Asus, I was expecting a high quality product, just as it was advertised. I turned it on to set it up and as the first windows sound came on, the left speaker gave a distorted noise. At this instance, I thought it might be a fault of the system. So I put some music on, but exactly the same distorted, bad quality noise came out of the left speaker. No problem, although I spent 2 hours to set it up, I decided to return it next day. Pc World exchanged it with no problems and appologised for the inconvenience, as it cost me £20 to return it to the shop. Happy as I was, went home and set up the new laptop, crossing my fingers that this time it is working properly. After spending a couple of hours personalising my laptop and setting it up, I thought let's try the sound, just to make sure it's working. Well, this time, the right speaker blasted the same distorted noise, like an old speaker. Not just this, but the blu-ray rom was also misfit, the door on the bottom part was not closing properly. It was working fine, but again on a 600£ laptop, I would not expect such a problem. I was really disappointed, but because I spent all my saved money on the laptop and was busy with work, I thought I'll wait a couple of days before I sort it out... After a couple of days of use, the bass speaker stopped working as well. Seriously? After a couple of days? Besides, I am working full time, so I used the laptop only for a couple of hours after work and didn't even listen to music excessively, just the odd movies and tv shows...
This one, I did not want to exchange and reset the new one
again, as I thought it is a factory fault with all N55sf-s, so I thought repair would be easier...
Big mistake, I got it back with a factory reset, so I had to reinstall everything again and the speaker was still the same.... The bass speaker was fixed, but again the blu-ray rom and the built-in speaker was not even looked at. The speaker gave the same distorted and just crappy sound basically. So I sent it back
again and now it takes ages to repair it, although it just came out recently and its a
brand new laptop... I am not sure the so much advertised bang and whatever
speakers deserve such an attention. The other concern of mine is that if a 600£ laptop has so many problems from the beginning, how much do they last? Will I have to buy a new one in a year's time? Im not sure it was a good investment at all...
Anyone experienced similar problems? Any experience with asus complaints? -
I've had this computer now for a week or so and the only thing I have some problems with is the sound sometimes.
Sometimes the sound doesn't work in Google Chrome if I've had the computer in hibernate, while it still works in programs like Spotify / playing a movie in VLC.
And sometimes if the sound works in Chrome it says in Spotify that there is a problem with my soundcard until I close Chrome and it works again.
A restart of the computer normally fixes this, but it's still strange.
Sometimes the speakers gives a weird sound like it's broken but mostly it's fine. -

Hi folks, have the N55SF I7-2670QM UK variant.. thus far v. happy with it, used it mainly for flight sims (x-plane), thus far max CPU temps around 87degrees and GPU at 65 degrees, but averaging 77 deg C CPU and 50- 60 deg C for the GPU, which I'm pretty happy with.
However, last night, it stopped charging.. - thats to say that it runs on battery power, but it will not charge, either when running/turned on, or when turned off (it doesn't even recognise the charger).
The charger when powered, but not plugged into the N55, has the green power light lit, but as soon as this is plugged into the N55, the light goes off, and will not come back on. I've tried this with two ASUS N55 chargers, and they are both the same, so I'm fairly sure the fault is not with the charger.
Does anyone have any ideas? - My thoughts are either battery or the onboard laptop power circuits - I'm kind of hoping its not the laptop itself, but be grateful if anyone has experienced this or similar can share their experiences.
Not had a reply from ASUS yet (this only occured last night to be fair!) or had time to contact the retailer yet.
Thanks -
Ok, update, managed to get it running in ac mode only with the battery removed ( on advice of the retailer), after an hour, slight pop noise, smell of TCP/burning, laptop is now doa... am pissed off...

Rotten luck @hiasakite!
Time to test the infamous Asus warranty?
Mine's been fine so far - no problems and does what is says on the tin. Except this hateful keyboard. Can't wait for a replacement to become available, even from a 3rd-party. I'd gladly lose the num pad being left handed (I never use it) to make more room for space around the keys and a better quality feel to the press.
I didn't think it would be such an issue for me as I bought it mainly for photo editing, not writing a novel, but I think I'm proving myself wrong... -
Thanks!.. will give them a call tomorrow as the UK support line is just 9-5 Mon-Fri.. fingers crossed !
Shame because I was v happy with it when it was working...
Hopefully its a one off fault ( ie not a systematic fault) as we bought two of them.... -
Hey guys, out of curiosity how many of you guys are happy with and/or would recommend this laptop to someone wanting to upgrade soon?
any help is much appreciated. -
Hi @streather
I think this laptop is fine - with the exception of the keyboard (see many previous comments). If you're not planning on writing your first novel on it, it should be ok ;-) Interestingly, Asus deny any knowledge of customer's disatisfaction with the keyboard (I kindly suggested the get their head outta their butts and read a forum or two )
Make sure you avoid the lower res (1366x768) screen - the HD+ 1600x900 on mine is super and I would think the full HD 1920x1080 would be a corker too. Mine was advertised as having the Superbright screen and I half expected it to turn up with a shiny mirror up front, but it didn't! A nice matte effect
I bought the i5 version due to having it offered at the right price and it has coped with the many layers of Photoshop editing I have thrown at it with ease, plays full HD video content without a splutter. I haven't had opportunity to throw Quake, Unreal Tournament or MotoGP2010 at it yet so I can't comment on its game playing (too busy with the new Xbox).
Bloatware is easily removed as per the guide elsewhere on this forum which makes a nice change. -
I've noticed that there is a LOT of dissatisfaction with the keyboard I guess I'll need to find out if pc world or currys have one in stock so i can see how bad it is in person, the 2 or 3 places I've seen where I'd be tempted to buy it from all seem to be stocking the 1600x900 matt screen so that's definitely a bonus.
Gaming wise from the stuff ive found on youtube it seems to handle bf3 pretty well i was hoping someone on here would be more knowledgeable about performance figures etc though -
Some nutty benchmarks here if they help, but they don't mean Jack to me :confused2:

Strange i have no probs with keyboard at all, i like it. The touchpad however takes some getting used too, no tangible reference points.

Owners please tell me what are the wifi cards your N55SFs shipped with?
I saw the i7-2670QM model with a 1080p matte and wonder what kind of wifi card it would have.
Thanks. -
Hi,
does anybody knows how the GT 555M looks like in it. I mean the card shape.
I'm willing to buy an N55SF if I can swap the vcard to a GTX560 or GTX570.
I saw a GTX560 on ebay for 220USD. -
-
Anyone found a keyboard replacement ? thanks
-
im still confuse want take n55sf i5 or not
can some convincing me.. please
or ill go to hp dv6-19tx
different n55sf is full hd and design. hp good processor and graphic -
Hello,
This is my first posting here as I am curious how experiences are with overheating of the N55SF. I currently own a Asus N61JQ and it performs well enough, but the cores overheat really quickly, both during heavy calculations as with games. If I get lucky I can play a game like the Witcher 2 for 30 minutes.
I now plan to buy a Asus N55SF-S1366V, but if the N55SF has the same overheating problems as the N61JQ there would be little point to get it.
Thanks in advance! -
Does anybody know whether the SD card slot uses the USB2 or USB3 interface? I'm considering buying a USB3 card reader but there's no point if the existing reader transfers at USB3 speeds.
RAW image files make a sizeable amount of data to import.
I've no real method of measuring the transfer rates accurately. -
Quick recap - evening of the 19/1 - problems with charging on my N55
20/1 - laptop went 'pop', with slight smell of burning, refused to turn on.
Called ASUS at 9.00 am on the 23/1 (Monday), they issued me with an RMA number, advised me to go to the RMA website. Did this around 10.30 am on the Monday 23/1. At 3 pm received a text advising me that a courier would be over on the Tuesday (24/1) to collect.
8am on the 24/1 - logged in to the DPD courier website, advised pick-up would be between 11 and 12, and given option to change date of this didn't work for me. Courier arrived on a motorbike at 11.30.
Gave them a call a week later (30/1) - was advised by the advisor that a motherboard fault had been diagnosed, and that this was going to be replaced.
Contacted them on the 6 or 7th Feb (10 days after original collection) by IM chat, was advised by the agent on the other end that the motherboard had been replaced, however a keyboard fault had also been diagnosed, and that this was currently awaiting delivery (I assume this had to be shipped from Taiwan or China). Next day (8/2) recieved text from ASUS giving an ETA for the keyboard of the 23/2.
Tuesday this week (21/2) recieved e-mail from ASUS indicating that the notebook would be returned to me on the 22/2.
Usual business with DPD website giving me a timeslot, courier turned up on time, on his bike, with my notebook.
So overall, pretty much exactly a month from collection to return, replacement of motherboard and keyboard.
Thus far, seems ok, few fingerprints on the case, but no damage, data etc all intact, so notwithstanding the time to ship the keyboard over, I've no complaints with the service, and understand in any electronics business, (and without vastly overengineering, with its impact on price to you and I), some level of warranty work will be required.
Fingers crossed it keeps working! -
-
Yup - no problems with it since it got back, so that's good
Now that I've started to use its power I'm getting the high temps people are talking about - using x-plane v10 with 'most' settings maxed out (bear in mind this is a simulator that will use as much CPU and GPU as is available) I've been getting peak CPU core temps of 98, 97, 94 and 92 degrees C, and peak GPU temp of 73 degrees C.
Curiously, the CPU/GPU have not been throttling clock speed back (ie runs at a steady 2.8-2.9Ghz as per max on all 4 cores)- so no internal thermal thresholds have been triggered- I'd be interested to know how hot one should let it get though, as I believe there is software out there which will allow you to set your own peak temp at which it throttles back clock speed.. -
Update- managed to get the GPU up to 78 degrees C with no noticeable throttling..
-
Guessing this is the i7... My poor little i5 has no such temperature issues. Made it crunch a few numbers the other day, rendering video, and it broke no such sweat ;-)
I might play a game on it one day. -
Yup - the i7-2670qm..
In 'normal',(ie non-load - browsing etc) operation it hovers around the 50-60 degree CPU and 50 degrees GPU temperature mark -
Question, does the N53 have essentially the same keyboard as the N55 (besides the media buttons?). No local store around me has the N55 to try out, but I've seen a few N53s.
Also, does the touchpad on the N55 support side scrolling or does it require the multitouch gesture with two fingers to scroll web pages? I hate doing the multitouch thing, I'm used to scrolling using the side of the touchpad and that's what I want to keep doing. -
Also, I know this has been asked a couple of times in this thread without much response but does it look like the keyboard would be easily replaceable? I'm trying to decide between the N53 or spending a bit more for the N55, and the fact that I can 'fix' the keyboard on the N53 is a major seller. If the N55 looks like it MAY have that potential one day, I'll probably just pull the trigger and live in hope.
-
No side scrolling on N55, but plenty multi-gesture on trackpad.
I've asked questions about alternative keyboards for this N55 with no luck - Asus support "people" (I say that loosely mind you - not sure they live in the actual World) deny any knowledge of derisive comments relating to the keyboard. I did suggest they look at recent forum posts about the machine they make. Silence...
I asked who makes the existing keyboard so I might approach them directly for a potential replacement. Silence...
Overall, it's doing what I want, when I want. It even crunches a few numbers when I ask it to render video or flatten multi-layered images in Photoshop. -
How different is N55SF and N55SL???
Is N55SL good enough for commonly used programs like AutoCAD, 3D Studio Max, Photoshop and Illustrator
-
Hi guys Im planning to get this ASUS N55SF-EH71 at tigerdirect for $950 which IMO is a pretty good deal for its specs and power. What do you guys feel about it ?
-
Can anyone recommend a good messenger-style laptop bag that can carry the N55SF?
-
Thx DrToast, do you find any heat issues with that ?
-
Would you owners recommend this over the hp envy 15? Which has better graphics?
-
-
Can anyone accurately test the read/write speeds for the SD card reader? Does it interface through USB 2 or 3? I'm considering buying a USB3 card reader to help speed up importing RAW image files, but there's no point if the USB3 interface is already being utilised.
TBH - the speed from my SanDisk ExtremePro "45Mbps" card isn't too shabby when being read, but I can't measure it properly. -
Just received it, everything is working great. Liked it very much.
Couple things though, the keyboards feel kinda shaky as it it would fall off and the lid is indeed fingerprint magnet (but since its piano glossy, it looks SWEET!, just have to clean it more often)...
Other than that, NO REGRETS ! -
Got this laptop a few weeks ago in pcworld here in the UK. It cost £700 and I'm extremely happy with it in every way so far. For me it's the perfect laptop for the price, but the specs as advertised on pcworld's website...
ASUS N55SF 15.6" Laptop - Black at cheap prices | Pcworld
...are different from what I found instore:
i5-2430M CPU
2GB GT635M GPU (advertised online as the GT555M)
6GB 1333Mhz RAM
500GB 7200rpm HDD (doesn't specify online that it's 7200rpm, but when I looked up the part number it's a Seagate Momentus @7200rpm)
1600x900 Matt Screen (advertised online as 1366x768)
...looking at the bottom of the machine it's actually the Asus N55SL-S2012V, not the N55SF.
Anyway, this seems like a great balance for good performance, decent screen quality/real estate, and heat issues. The other features I love are the fact that it has 4 USBs, 2 of which are USB 3.0, and the sound is the best of any laptop I've owned (I'm not using the sub-woofer). It's also extremely quiet. It has an L-shaped power connector, which is much more sensible than the huge straight wire I have jutting out about 5 inches on my other (HP) laptop. The Instant On feature works a treat, and the fact that you can charge USB stuff when it's off is pretty handy.
A lot of people have commented adversely on the keyboard and this was a concern for me when I was considering buying it, as I do like the island style keyboards (the HP keyboard is excellent). Having used it for a few weeks now I can honestly say that although it's very different from many modern keyboards I actually really like it. There is some travel on the right hand side of the keyboard (really just the number pad) but it's not too bad. The rest of the keyboard is absolutely fine.
I haven't pushed the machine yet as far as gaming goes, but I expect it to play most things at its native resolution without any problem. I've been playing older games on it like Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, Sniper Elite and Diablo II which all play flawlessly with absolutely no fan noise. The real test will be in May when Diablo III and Sniper Elite V2 are released. In the meantime I might try out Skyrim. -
