OK! So I just picked up my N53JF
    Stock WEI:
    Processor 6.9
    RAM 5.9
Graphics 4.7??? --> 4.3 after clean install and updates X_x
    Gaming graphics 6.5
    HDD 5.9

    First impressions:
    Pros
    Looks awesome.
Same, if not lighter than my 14" LG
I really like this keyboard; not really a fan of chiclet keyboards.
The touch pad is really really smooth and well designed unlike sony/acer/toshiba
Compared to the N61, the touch buttons are really easy to press
Very very good sound with or without SonicMaster (I can't decide if on or off is better)

    Cons
Touch buttons are easy to press but I am still used to pressing near the middle but it's not possible on this laptop.
Still getting used to the multi-touch; Anyone know how to add in edge scrolling?
There is some flex but doesn't bother me at all and double sided tape will probably fix it
There is a high pitched whine from cpu
There doesn't seem to be an easy way to take out the BRdrive for a swappable hdd

    What i've done so far:
Played COD4 and WC3 with no problems
Installed SSD ------------------> Everything is WAYYYYYYYYYYY FASTER !!!!!!!!!!
    Fresh install of win7

essense - thanks for all the information.

    I just purchased from Amazon the "N53JF-XE1 $1014.82 USD (+BR, +FHD, -1yr warranty, +$50 gift card) deal".
Amazon.com: ASUS N53JF-XE1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum): Computer & Accessories
I also used my Amazon credit card, which basically gives you another 3% cashback.

After tons of research, I think this laptop is the best bang for the buck for me. Good mix of processing power, graphics capability, energy efficiency, display resolution, connectivity, etc. Only thing missing for me is a firewire or express card slot, because I have a miniDV cam with firewire.

I don't understand why this model doesn't appear to be selling that well right now? Maybe the price isn't marked down as much as the older models out there, but with it's specs I think it's worth a little more.

I was also considering the N61JQ-XV1 which Amazon has for $850. I think its an older model, but more powerful processor and graphics, but worse battery life and screen resolution.
Amazon.com: ASUS N61JQ-XV1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown): Computer & Accessories

But for me it looked like the newer N53JF-XE1 was worth the extra money. Can't wait to get my hands on it, hope it looks as good in person.

    Congrats man!
I just ordered the XE1 model as well!
Amazon was forcing me to buy it
In the end I will have spent like $70 more than the XR1 but I get $50 to spend on a case or mouse or some BluRays!!

Anyone know if the Zeroshock III 15.4" will fit this??!

I've owned my N53Jf-XE1 for the grand total of one week, so let's break this down

Appearances: I can't say I didn't first love this laptop for its appearances (its specs weren't half bad either). If I wanted shear power, I would've opted for an older generation g series or something. It's absolutely superb looking, I'm really loving the brushed metal look (though the bezel still irks me). Coming off the matte flat look of lenovo's (I hate shiny shiny plastic, which I'm glad Asus is starting to step away from), I'm very pleased with how, come on, I have to say it, pretty it is.

Size and Weight: It seems a bit bigger than expected (mind you, I've gotten very used to a 10" netbook the last several months while I was in between laptops (the previous thinkpad 14" also seems rather small in comparison). It's actually a bit lighter I originally would have thought, but seems about average for its size. Of note: with regards to laptop bags, this laptop doesn't always fit in sleeves and bags designed for laptops "up to 15.6 inches"

Screen: very nice, good viewing angles from the sides, though there is fade out tilted too far up or too far down. I'm almost a little bothered by how bright it is (I'm used to being on a computer for a long time animating or other intensive things, and I usually dim the brightness way down, but it seems like I can't get it as low as I want (either that or I wish there were more stops inbetween each integer of brightness.... but this is all just personal preference)

The bezel surrounding the screen is very shiny and a fingerprint magnet (as is the single mouse button (see below)

Keyboard: I haven't noticed any flex and its been a pretty enjoyable typing experience. The lay-out is a little odd for me (coming from two Lenovo machines) but I'm getting used to it

Mouse/Trackpad: I love this trackpad. Usually, I turn off the tapping because it';s way too sensitive for me and I end up clicking things I never intended to click, but I've only had a few occasions of doing so. I too miss the edge scrolling that I'm so used to (and because the multi-touch gestures don't seem to always work for me (magnification in particular). The surface feels really nice. The button isn't my favourite (its a single bar, and rather shiny) but has been acceptable thus far.

Battery Life: Classes are on Thanksgiving break right now, so I haven't really tested the unplugged life, but it seems to be a solid 2.5 hours with regular (non-demanding use), and somewhere around 3.5 on battery saving settings (and my own dimming).

Temperatures: I'm really impressed by how cool this is running. The only part that ever seems slightly warm is the fan and the bottom near the fan. I very much appreciate this

Performance: Startup still seems to take longer than necessary, but that just means I haven't removed enought bloatware and cleaned up msconfig enough

I haven't put this through too much pain yet, but so far it has stood up to some light use of Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max alongside Adobe Lightroom which was running at the same time. The only strain seemed to occur when both maya and 3ds max were running at the same time (albeit briefly) but it hardly seemed to approve.

I've only seen the dedicated card come up once (while running maya/3ds max). I ran portal on the integrated and it stuttered a bit, but wasn't switching to the dedicated card courtesy of Optimus. When I switched manually things ran much smoother

DVD/Blu-Ray: I have not yet tested this

Sound: Fantastic. I mean, it's no match for a speaker and subwoofer combo, but its fairly powerful, not remotely tinny (you can hear a slight strain and distortion when you up the volume too much). The loudness and the clarity were what I was most pleased with.

Bottom Line: I kind of hope the Optimus gets smoothed out (though I haven't been able to upgrade the drivers via nvidia, not sure why), and it stays as cool as it has been (though I'll probably get a laptop cooler anyway... for rendering). I don't imagine I'll upgrade anything (I'm used to 2 gigs of ram, but we'll see if I consider 4gb sufficient). I'm still getting used the higher resolution (my lenovo had a 1400x900, which is actually pretty good (I didn't realise it at the time)). My eyes have suffered enough at the hands of computer screens, so that is something I'm going to have to work out. But the screen space you gain from it.... so great for any digital art work (or coding).

I'm not sure why people complain about lack of Express Card slot (use usb already, its industry standard, and most companies are nixing them anyway) or lack of firewire (another commodity item thats fairly useless to a decent chuck of people). At least with this laptop you get a usb 3.0 port and an e-sata port... both of which also function as usb 2.0 ports, but yeah.

All in all, I'm immensely pleased with my laptop choice thus far.

I just got mine N53JF and I want to change stock HDD to SSD. Can someone please explain (with pic, if possible) how to reach to HDD. Since I just bought it I don't want to scratch back cover while trying to open it (since there are no screws). Thanx.

    here
is a video, it's in korean but it doesn't matter
Basically take out the 2 screws from under the rubber feet
    slide the cover toward yourself
    then lift up

Btw, this instruction is also in the Emanual =]

I was hoping someone could clarify for me some of the abbreviations here? Does FHD mean Full High Definition meaning that the XE1 is the only model with 1920x1080 resolution? And I'm assuming BT means Bluetooth? So if I specifically want the higher resolution screen, I'd need to buy a bluetooth usb dongle if I also wanted bluetooth?

The N53JF-XE1 seems to be the best deal that I'm able to find that meets most of my requirements and has the resolution I want; I'm just trying to make sure I completely understand all the N53JF options. ;)

    Hi,
I have had my Asus N53JF-XE1 for about 3 weeks now, and I love it. It runs very cool and I can use it on my lap all the time without it feeling hot. The only thing that I think could use improvements is the viewing angles on the screen, don't get me wrong the screen is beautiful but it does washout vertically very quickly and I would have liked it to have a bit more left and right view angles. I believe my 6 year old Asus z70va has better viewing angles. but that doesn't really take away from the usability. I also have pretty bad eye sight but the Full HD screen does not bother me, text is larger than I thought it would be and very readable at this resolution.

My question to you all, has anyone actually gotten the replacement 9-cell battery offered here? Please let us know how its working for you, I am interested in buying the 9-cell battery.

Has anyone loaded Linux on here yet? I am thinking I will try to this weekend and report back to everyone.

Lets keep this owner's lounge active (but guess if its not active, thats a good thing cause more than likely we aren't having any problems with our N53's!!)

I got my N53JF yesterday. After spending a ridiculous amount of time creating a backup image I am finally using it a little.

Following the bloatware uninstall guides and updating the nvidia driver I seem to have everything in working order.

There is one small problem. It seems that my volume buttons no longer work. Anyone know off the top of their head what ASUS utility controls the volume buttons along the top? On a side note it also seems to have affected my function+ f10, f11, and f12 abilities to control the volume as well.

Look forward to getting this fully functional. But so far this is a nice machine.

My simple solution was to reformat with my backup disks. Everything works again. This time I didnt remove anything ASUS related. Just a few ereader apps and a bunch of trial games.

*Update* After installing all Windows Patches and Updating the Graphics Driver the sounds controls once again stopped working. I rolled back to before I updated the NVidia drivers and the problem persisted. Any ideas? I am at a loss, cause really patching windows and updating my graphics shouldn't kill sound functionality.

*Update 2* Uninstalled and reinstalled the ATK control pack from the Asus site and I am back in business.

Other then my sound hiccup, I am loving the laptop.

It should handle games with medium or medium/high (mixed) settings in 1366 x 768 resolution.
There will be some games (like fifa 11) that will run @ high in FHD, but not many.

Hmm... the fan does get loud but you can't hear it when you're gaming (I hope your game has sound) lol
You can notice the fan noise when you run stress tests

Windows Media Center (not to be confused with Player), part of Windows 7 Home Premium. Loads Bluray movies slowly, but that's true of many bluray machines. ("PowerDVD" flashes across the screen at one point I believe.)

Other free players I've used in the past that I think would work, at least with patches, include VLC and GOM player.

Hmm.. I just played COD BlackOps and i'm kind of disappointed
I can only play 1280x720 at low texture
    CPU gets to 81C
    GPU to 76C
Also, the cut scenes lag regardless
Is this how it's supposed to be ?

Glad I found this discussion thread! I do have a few questions about the XE1. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

First...are you guys serious--no edge scrolling on the trackpad? Please confirm you haven't found a way to activate this. I use the trackpad all the time, and this is a must-have.

Has anyone swapped out the blu-ray reader for an internal blu-ray writer? I could always buy an external one, but I'm curious to know how to tell if an internal writer would fit into this laptop?

On a related note, do you guys think this would have enough horsepower for occasional HD video editing of family videos? Realizing an i7 would be a better choice, but I like the overall package this laptop offers. Seems with what I've read, an i5 will get the job done, but because I won't do it all that often, the speed tradeoff shouldn't matter that much.

Next: can you confirm that this XE1 is indeed native FHD and not the "upconvert" of the other N53's that have the native 1366x768 and the Asus program that boosts the screen resolution to the 1080p like the "A1" variant does?

Lastly, do other XE1 owners have this high pitched CPU whine that Essense has mentioned? How annoying is it, and is it always present? Has Tech Support said anything about this being a one-off defect? Not sure I want to "defeat" it at the expense of a hotter CPU....

I have an N43, not an N53, but I think I can get a couple of these for you.
You still have scrolling on the trackpad, it's only that instead of being edge-style it's now done through multitouch, by dragging two fingers across the touchpad. Doesn't take a lot of getting used to, but, as a nitpick, you need to keep the fingers level, so I've ended up using the middle and ring fingers for scrolling. I have noticed the scrolling freaking out on me a couple of times, trying to scroll itself upwards right after my scrolling down, or trying to scroll several sliders at once in Media Player, but they've been very rare occurrences and I might be an isolated case.

I've done this on my N43. I've replaced the stock DVD writer it came with for a Sony BD-5730s burner. Laptop ODDs are standard size, you need to find the securing screw, pull out the stock drive and take off the mounting bracket from it and screw it to the new replacement drive and slide it back in (until you feel it click into the socket) and secure it. On these N*3 series laptops you'll also need to replace the outer tray panel, which is a special shape to fit the design of the chassis. The outer door is held in place with plastic clips, and normally very easy to swap, but on these models the shape of the door can make access to those clips a bit of a pain, so you'll need to be more patient and careful than usual. But it's perfectly doable.

Video editing isn't my field, so I can't offer some definitive advice, but I personally doubt the i5 would choke to a standstill on any home video you'd throw at it, HD or otherwise. Obviously, the beefier the processor the faster it goes, but if it's something you'd only do every now and then I don't think you need to concern yourself over it.

I have yet to find edge-scroll but my fingers are used to two-finger scrolling now
Someone did swap their ODD but not sure if it's to a BRwriter
    Not sure about video editing
    Yes, it is native 1080
Basically right now i'm typing this on my bed with no music. i can hear the whine (this is my 2nd N53 and they both had whine) but if you play music or if there's background noise you can't hear it. The last two days i've left my laptop on to download stuff and I could barely hear the fan but there was no whine... or maybe my ears are getting used to the noise...

the asus site lets u download the manual

Thanks, FelixC -- I've actually wondered if that exact Sony writer would work--I've had it on my consideration list. I take it that it works great for you? So, when installing it, I take it that you used the outer tray panel that came with the N43 again instead of the one that came with the Sony writer itself?

And I just noticed that my work Lenovo laptop uses multi-touch scrolling with two fingers (as well as traditional edge scrolling), so I suppose I could just get in the "habit" of doing the multi-touch scrolling for both laptops.

No worries, and yes, the new Sony BD drive works just fine. All I had to do is swap it in physically and Windows picked it up with no problems. I've not written any BluRay discs with it yet, not had anything to waste them on so far, but I have checked that my burner program recognises them as usable and to their full capacity, both for standard 25 gig BD as well as 50 gig BD-DL. I'm also guessing that if you want to play commercial BluRay movie discs you may have to set the region (right click Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager -> BD/DVD/CD Drives -> [your drive] -> Properties -> New Region), but I haven't come to that yet.

To the second part, yes, I had to use the original tray panel that came with the laptop. It is wide, wedge-shaped and extends a bit to the underside of the laptop, as opposed to standard laptop ODD tray panels which are slim and rectangular and would leave massive gaps between the panel and the chassis. I'm afraid that if you want to change the optical drive you'd really have to go through with swapping the tray's outer panel. It's not really a big deal, you just have to be patient and careful with the plastic clips.

I'm afraid that's about the best quality picture of a standard tray panel that I can offer you, you can see the clips jutting out. But what I did before deciding to go for it and buy a new ODD was I tested taking the tray panel off from my old laptop, you could experiment with the Lenovo if you feel well about it.

Does anyone know if it's possible to add an internal Bluetooth radio to the XE1 version or am I stuck using a USB dongle?

Good question...I'd like to know the answer, too. I did place my order for this laptop yesterday thinking that I'd have to get one of those "micro" Bluetooth USB adapters because I don't think it's possible from what I've read.

Have you seen how small those are? It's not the huge dongle I remember from years ago...

Yes BT USB devices are about the smallest conceivable USB device I know of . Just enough to grab on to to extract and that's about it. Looks almost like a dust cover for the port!
    ---

I learned something I thought to share. Perhaps this is old hat but it was new to me. Did you all know that the eSATA port on the left edge is also an extra USB port! It's actually an eSATA p port that provides power, up to a point, to your external eSATA device and it is also a USB port (I tested USB 2). Anyone know if it is USB 3.0 like its neighbor? I don't have any such devices yet.

P.S. Does the card reader do the new SDXC format?

yes that is correct, but you do have to have a special controller for esata to work powered that way, Im still on the hunt for some esata cases with that goodness.

Its all possible due to the USB being able to provide 5A of power through its ports (AFAIK) and the use of a modified interface. this was first implemented by MSI in 2 of their mobo, and the MSI ex625 line of laptops, to which I own one.

Is there a good guide out there that describes what all the Asus bloatware does? I got my XE1 yesterday and got rid of most of the third party applications and replaced with my preferred apps, but ihni what half of the Asus apps are and I'm leery of uninstalling something important.

So far I'm loving the laptop. The screen is amazing, and the entire reason I picked it. It's definitely bigger than I thought it'd be though. I'm hoping to install Ubuntu tonight so that I can dual boot. :)

Can anyone recommend a basic neoprene sleeve for the N53JF? I bought an HP Onyx for 16" notebooks and it was too small (in the length dimension by just a tad). It was on sale for really cheap so of course now I have it in my head I should be able to get what I want for not much more than $8.99. :) [If I have to be a big boy and suck it up I guess I could even spend double that but anything more than double that price and I'd just rather wait till I see another good deal and survive on pillow cases and other non-classy alternatives for the time being since I rarely take it out of my house anyways.]

    Hello!
    I have an Asus N73JF with a Geforce GT 425m , Core i5-460m and Optimus using Windows 7 64bit.
I wanted to install another version of the Nvidia Drivers so I uninstalled
everything from Nvidia in the Software Panel of the Control Panel.

The problem is that now i cannot install new drivers for the Nvidia Card anymore.
Even the official 260.99 Driver Install Routine says that it couldnt find a supported Graphics Card and doesnt install.
And the Nvidia card isnt listed in the Device Manager anymore. Only the Intel HD can be found there now
so i cannot use the "Have Disk" method I think.

Please help if you have any idea how i can install Nvidia Drivers again.

Fixed it by deleting the Intel HD from Device Manager. That prompted an automatic reinstall of Intel AND Nvidia :>

    Hey,
I am hopefully going to purchase the N53JF soon, but have a few questions first.

    1) Is there much of a difference between the FHD and the standard display when doing simple tasks such as browsing the web or using word?

    2) Other than the whining noise which there seems to be a fix now, what are there other main cons?

    3) When doing very basic things, is the fan noticeably loud, or do you actually have to try and listen tobe able to hear it?

    4) Has anyone in the UK purchased the XE1 (FHD) version and if so please could you tell me where you bought it from?

    Thanks in advance!

    1) Basically after using the FHD, when I look at my old laptop, everything looks stupidly big and pixelized.
    2) what's the fix??
Cons - cramped number pad, keyboard flex(fixable), short battery life, gpu isn't super good for games
    3) I sleep with my laptop on at night and it's really quiet. When you're gaming, if you turn the sound off you can hear the fan but I doubt you'll game with the sound off

Thanks for your reply, just saw that the fix is only a half fix as it says "(kinda)" next to it, here it is:

Also, does anyone know somewhere where I can buy the N53JF - XE1 from in the UK? Really want this laptop. :(

Anyway, I have sent my N53 in for service because of some dead pixels and I mentioned the CPU whine, so hopefully they will solve the problem!

Anyone with some feedback on the quality of the FHD display on the Asus n53jf (Sz276V w. I5 480m) (Im Danish so the product numbers are properly different). Im a graphic designer and i really want the best screen possible. What is the color gamut, contrast and the black level of it.
The choice is between the dell xps 15 and the Asus n53jf (xxxx). The dell xps has already been praised really high, but how about the n53jf.
The dell would be in 1900 dollars for me
The asus would cost 1600 dollars for me so there is money to save, but it all comes down to the screen.

    Hi!

I´m thinking about purchasing a N53JF but there is one thing that is absolutetly crucial for me: (because this is graphic card related (GT425M) specific model is not that important)

Has anyone tried the Cuda Toolkit 3.2 and Parallel Nsight 1.5 with any luck?

I will be soooo happy if someone could try this out for me (if nobody already know the answer). For cuda compatibilty one could just install the Cuda Toolkit 3.2, and GPU Computing SDK code samples from here:

Nsight 1.5 for visual studio can be obtained from here:

This is my first 1080x1920, 15.6 inch display (although I have numerous larger ones with this resolution). I have the N53JF-XE1 as it is sold in the US market.

For precise work I doubt a ny notebook will be on par with an external monitor but for casual movie and TV use I find the display quite nice. It is however very angle sensitive, being I believe a TN LCD, and no good from other than straight ahead for color and black level so no more than one person can use it at a time. Even from straight in front of it the color and black level don't maintain perfect uniformity from top to bottom with test patterns, at least, but for casual viewing it does an acceptable job for me.

I don't own any colorimeters, photo meters, etc. beyond blue colored filters to make measurements , but if there are and values in the graphics section you would like me to look up for you , if you would kindly explain where that info resides, I would be more than glad to relate the relevant info.
