Thanks for the link, unfortunately we just finished our project in Poland with the last trip, so not too sure when I will be back but if I am, I am sure I could buy it and get it sent to our client.

    Cheers :D

Damn, they were faster with review than me ... Well, there is no option to pre-order it yet. Salesmen say that it's Asus Poland fault but who knows hehe.

It's CPU is faster than M17x's one, but not graphic card. 5,5h on power saving settings ? I won't believe as long as I don't check it myself.

    I'll keep updating.

Please, keep us updated when you get yours, at least you can get one ha ha! I might just have to come over for the weekend. Well this general review of sandybridge does tout higher performance and better battery life, so fingers crossed we finally get power and good battery life when you throttle down.

hi, i've just bought a asus n43j with a intel core i5-480m that comes with the Nvidia Geforce GT 425m.
i found out at home that the asus has 2 graphic processers- a intel(R) HD graphic(inbuilt) & the nvidia geforce gt 425 m.
in the windows startup button there was an option to enable 3D vision but whenever i enable it there is a pop up informing that the primary display adapter does not support 3D vision. i also can"t play the files that is inthe nvidia file on the programs.
i have even went to the nvidia graphic panel & checked the option to use the nvidia processer global setting but still to no avail.
i"m not sure what the problem is but i think this is due to the primary graphic card is still recognised as a intel graphic card. how do i overide this n put my nvidia as my primary graphic card? my bios does not have an option to toggle in between graphic cards as well.
honestly speaking i am extremely bad in computer knowledge when it come to this kind of problems.
i will b very grateful if someone can help me out in this

N43 doesn't have 3D capable screen. Unless you have external screen/tv with 3d support this option will not work.
More about this technology can be found here: NVIDIA 3D Vision

I am torn between the n43 and the u41. I like the build quality of the n43, the speakers are plus, and a huge factor for me is the n43s keyboard is much better then the chiclet style on the u41, i think ill be much more productive with it. Not to mention the n43 seems to be alot more sturdy in its build/flexing.

However- the u41 has a standard 8cell battery, so bat life is much better without having to buy a 9 cell ebay one liek some people do. Less cost[especaily after 9c battery], much less weight over all, with a 9 cell id have like 5.5lb as oppossed to the u41 having like 4.6

Is it possible to buy a n43 keyboard replacement and put it into a u41? Then i would set! Anyone have any ideas or help for me?

I am facing the same confusions. N43 is much much better in every way except battery when compared to U41. I got a G51 and feels a bit tooo heavy nd noisy. Recently asus launched a variation of N43 here in indonesia(which is where i am working now) which is usual model minus bluray, - 2gb ram - windows for 850USD. i hv been running arnd this town to find a piece but seems like its sold out. I was anyway going to get an SSD and OBHD caddy nd upgrade the RAM. U36 was my primary target but a bit turned off coz of the 310M.

anyone got any comments on the noise level and color gamut of the screen for N43???

    thanks

What are peoples experiences with the chiclet style keyboards? Just seem like the mroe standard one on the n43 would be much easier to work on!

I have ordere a u41jf i5 but I wonder if I should cancel that order after reading about the n43.
Can anyone come with an educated guess on when the SL or the SN will hit the stores? And will there be any big price difference?
The only one avaliable here in Norway as far as i can see is the JF version.
One more thing, the u41jf has 1333MHz memory chips and the n43 has 1066MHz. Is there a big difference in preformance or is the 1333 chips compatiable with the n43?

I would definitely go for the N43SN purely because it has the better Nvidia 550 GPU, and has the new Intel Sandybridge processors, which going by reviews are a lot faster and more power efficient, currently for sale in China and Taiwan, but I contacted another reseller in Poland who is currently selling the JF and they are actually expecting the N43SN in March, so for me that's looking like its going to be a weekend break in Warsaw!

Heading home to NZ in easter via Korea with a stop over there on the way back, but don't like my chances of finding one there! I also had a friend look in Singapore but they are not releasing that model there, I also asked an american reseller and the SN version is not scheduled to be released there either.

oh yeah the N43SN version does come with 1333mhz ram http://bbking.techbang.com.tw/NB/product_spec.php?id=2110&gid=6

also with this review why would you buy older chipset http://www.techsmart.co.za/hardware/notebook_and_tablet_pcs/Asus_N43SL_review.html

Still the battery life on the new 43SN is not were near the 7-9 hours of the u41...
And still the weight of it will be amost a pound more.

So my questions above still stand..

    Hey there,

The chassis are different sizes so I would say the keyboards would not be interchangeable.

It seems simple to me, if you want performance and don't mid the extra weight, go for the N43.

If you want a slimmer, lighter but less powerful laptop go for the U41.

Personally I want as powerful as possible in a 14" chassis, so im choosing the N43SN, anything 13" and under all have lower grade GPU's seems 14" is the smallest you can go while getting a good dedicated GPU.

    Does that help?

Yes it does, but how effective is the keyboard on the 41? It seems on a chiclet style keyboard being a quick and effcient user with your laptop would suffer compared to the n43's regular proffesional kind of keyboard

    Ok, I've ordered N43SN. ETA March 17th.

    Specification:
    CPU: i5 - 2410M (I'm not sure if I need 2 more cores for 150€ ;)
    RAM: 8GB
    GPU: GF GT550M
HDD: 640GB (probably I will change it for Momentus XT)
    Screen: 1366 x 768
    Price: 770€

I will run benchmarks as soon as notebook arrives.

Maybe it looks like it, but I can assure you, it isn't. Too much flex for me. XPS M1530 had better keyboard.

N43JF with i5 and GT425 is really quiet. At silent office mode it's almost inaudible. When under stress it is quieter than my M1530 was with no stress at all.
Screen's colors aren't great, worse than 1440x900 AU Optronics in XPS M1530.

Good Stuff, was that from this site? n43sn - wyniki wyszukiwania - Sklep komputerowy - X-KOM.PL they have an amazing range of N43's i've been emailing them every couple of weeks, glad to see the mid march date being confirmed.

I was going to get one immediately, but I am from Christchurch where they had the recent earth quake and i'm going to delay my purchase so I can donate money home VIDEO: Fours days of quake aftermath - Campbell Live - Video - 3 News very sad indeed to see my home town torn to shreds.

tj, when you get it can you post some notes how to backup/convert the os and bios to the english language version.

i'd be fine swapping the keyboard, but not sure how to go about the software language stuff

or are you polish ? :D

    Yes I'm from Poland.
As far as I know, you can download language pack for Win7, but I don't know how to do that, since I've never done that before.
It will be easier if you order configuration with no OS like I did, then buy one in language you prefer. It's a bit more expensive, but you have it on disk, not on recovery partition.

    Keyboard is QWERTY.
Bios by default is in english.

    Does it help ?

X-Kom actually offer a model without an OS, that's what I'm getting, I think its ridiculously cheap only £750, im just lucky I have a full version of W7, but you can pick up W7 on ebay for about £70. the last Laptop I purchased was from the states, minor changes in keyboard layout don't bother me, but I was looking to also buy from China, even then a keyboard replacement is very easy.

i am really thinking about flying to Poland and getting 43sn. Does anybody have idea how much 43sn with 2630qm would score on 3dmark06? approximately? i have gateway 7811fx with p8400 2.26ghz (penryn) and 8800gts. Stock gets around 8650. So i assume since according notebookcheck gt550 is few places better than 8800gts, and 2630qm blows p84000, it should be in at least 10000 zone?

i just wish they had 2630qm version, with regular dvdr, and not bluray, since i dont need it at all, it probably would save me about 50 euros right? :)
    thanks

edit: NZwaverider, also if you fly to poland to get it, at a store you should ask for duty free form, and once you at airport, go to customs, you should get back import taxes, not sure how much is it in Poland, but should be in 10-20% range, so let say the best config cost 3700pln (810 british pounds), so you would save 80-160 pounds. At least how it works in Norway, i think thats how it is everywhere. My friend bought netbook for 2800 nok (310 pounds) in Norway, and when he was leaving Norway, at customs he filled out a form and received around 500 nok (55 pounds) back. I have more examples, my mother bought 9000 worth laptop, received 2000 back i think. Other friend bought 1000 euro worth camera, received about 200 euro back.

Yes it would save you 50-100euros, but unfortunately x-kom doesn't have such config.

I was about to order i7 version, but at last moment I've decided not to. A bit too expensive for my taste, but it's just me with my 'polish' point of view.
I will benchamark i5 version and probably write small review and post it here. Confirmed ETA is 18th in my house, so check it then.

EDIT: Here is screen with score on N53SV with i7 and overclocked 540m. Since 550m is just an overclocked 540m and it has lower clocks than one on screen, stock one probably won't hit 10000 in 3dmark06 (1280x1024). It's just a guess though.
In order to get more performance you should be looking after 460m or 560m. But you won't find them in such small, cool (temp and overall ;)) and quiet notebook.

    @ tj69

I think the price is incredible value, considering the spec of the Asus (apart from screen) is better than a Macbook pro which is around £1,500, and I do keep an eye on things an would say if Asus sold the N43 in the UK, I would imagine it would sell for £1000 to £1200, considering I can get the base system with no OS for £750, I find this ridiculously cheap for an i7 laptop with usb 3.0!

    @ fatpanda

I emailed x-kom in English and they replied in English, so no problem there, I just emailed them today to see how I can place an order, I have a Polish friend going home for Easter, so will get her to bring it back for me.

Heat shouldnt be a problem, they Sandybrige has been widely reported to run cooler than current i7 laptops, so if the N43JF doesn't have a heat problem, the SN won't have a problem.

Yes, very excited, for that price i'm going to upgrade the HDD to a vertex 2 SSD, its going to FLY!!!!!!

Yes annoying they don't post to the UK, probably to stop people comitting credit card fraud??? who knows, same in US, some don't post overseas, anyhow at least flights are cheap with Ryan Air, just take a city break ha ha

nz, yes i emailed them and they informed me they do not post to the uk. i was so disapppointed. my mum stays in the states though, so i'll just have to wait for it to come out over there.

i was ready to buy now though, and when i saw the specs and previous reviews of the older model i was excited. probably the only thing that could improve it would be the i7 2720qm, and possibly a new screen.

i was looking at the famous 14" lg 900p screen , and wondering about an upgrade. both have 40 pin connectors, and the same display type, so it may be a possibility.

i will wait and see if the quality of the original screen is so bad it needs changed.

i am looking forward to tj69's review :)

buying laptops in usa, and bringing over to europe is a bit pain in the behind due to power outlet. yes you can buy new ac adapter but thats a bit too much. and then what if something brakes? can asus laptop that was purchased in usa, be fixed with the same warranty in europe? how about if you buy asus in poland and something brakes, do you have to send it where you purchased it, or local asus in any country can fix it for you?

Asus has global warranty. I don't know how they support works, but my dead Dell was from Belgium, and it had european warranty, and local service accepted it.
But before you buy - just ask reseller and your local support - you'll know then for sure.

    tj

EDIT: BAD... really BAD news. I've just got call from x-kom, and they told me, that shipment had been delayed till 8th April. Probably ASUS can't handle production (because of earlier SB fault) fast enough.
I'm not sure what I'll do, because I'm in hurry to have notebook. At this moment I'm still waiting, but thinking about changing order to N53SV with i7 if I get good offer for it. Sorry if I let you down with lack of review anytime soon.

I managed to put the graphics card clocks the same as the nVIDIA GT550m and temperatures rose only 2 degrees with no artifacts. I believe that the clocks can be raisen even more but I just wanted to see if it was true that the gt550m is the same card as the gt435m but with higher clocks. The cooling and performance are fantastic and the fan I not even listen to it. After 1 hour playing starcraft2 with all settings in ultra the highest temperature I had was 69 degrees Celsius. It's just a shame that they placed a 5400rpm hard drive but it's not that bad. The sound is excellent, the keyboard has some flexibility but i not even notice when I'm writing, the trackpad is good, the screen is also good although I have heard that the viewing angles are not good but It does not affect anything for me and I use the laptop in bed and desk. I do not have an external monitor so i can not give the score in 3dmark Vantage in normal resolution .. but at the maximum resolution of 1366x768 the gpu is able to score 4312 points which is very good. In terms of battery, it lasts almost 2 hours watching a movie with brightness set to the maximum. I did not do more battery tests..

    sorry to hear that tj.

i have been waiting every day for your review, i think i was as excited for you as you were about getting it :D

you could buy a n53sn from amazon for the time being, then before the 30 days are up, return it - by then the n43 will be out :D

you may even like it enough and be happy to keep it.

to me though, the n43 has a slightly better graphics card - and is more mobile. however this smaller size may impact temps.

i can get the n53sn here in the uk, for a pretty good price, but i think the 15" is a little bit too big.

whatever you do/get - please give us a review here.

@fatpanda yeah just wait till the global warantee runs out and simply replace the processor yourself that's what I did with my W3J, was an easy fix, I have also considered swapping the screen for a better one, as you say if the pins are the same it should be a strait swap I know others have done this with the G53, so it can be done!

I have also seen the N53, it's a big chassis, I much prefer the smaller N43 size and weight (N43 is still 2cm wider than my 14" W3J) but much better than my work Laptop im testing, a Dell Latitude M...something a rather, which is massive, its closer to the size of a 15" it's got last generation i7 and Nvidia 330m GPU, cost £1,700, I think its a rip off, the N43 even with an expensive SSD is still going to be several hundred pounds cheaper and I bet it will be faster!

@zarraza I brought my W3J in the states and use it in the UK, all electronics are dual voltage these days 110-240v its just the plug that needs to be changed from US to UE or UK, the lead running from the wall to power brick are quite generic so you can easily pick up another for minimal cost, GLOBAL warantee also means you can buy it in any country and get it serviced in your home country, no problem I've also done that.

@hvieira yes im sure the clocks are the same, you can also check here Comparison of Laptop Graphics Cards - Notebookcheck.net Tech also the Nvidia website lists the spec so you can see which ones have the same core but different clocks, a real rip off really, they shouldn't be selling the same card with just different clock speeds.

@TJ69 yeah I emailed x-kom, and they haven't replied yet, maybe that's the reason, I have a friend going back to Poland for Easter, so might see if I can get her to bring one back for me. Can you tell me, have you prepaid for yours? or are they only taking orders once they are shipping.

The wait goes on aye...... but looking around this is still the best spec 14" around....

@NZ, yeah the european plug attachment cost few pounds, but its a bit annoying. actually some people just cut off the american plug, and replace with european plug, doesnt require much knowledge about wires and electricity. and thanks for info regarding warranty.

@NZwaverider i know nvidia does that but not all the time you can jump the clocks to the level of the card above even if they are supposely the same card.. that happened with the owners of the nvidia 9800m GS, some could get the same clocks as the 9800m GTS and others couldn't. Fortunately for owners of the cards Gt420m, GT425m, GT435m, GT525m and GT540m you all can get at least the GT550m speeds like i have seen people getting with the GT420m, GT425m, GT435m and GT540.. even like that never jump the clocks straight to the GT550m, do little jumps at a time, stress test the video card and check temperatures and you will be fine.
So we've got a realy nice card on a 14" that keeps surpring me :)

It's the best spec 14'' till Alienware m14x, but it isn't coming before july ;)

I didn't prepaid for mine. I preordered it only just to get it on 1st day. I'll pay when I recieve notebook. But AFAIK you can prepaid for it if you want.

I wonder how portable and what measures and weight the m14x will have.. considering that is the same chassis as the m15x but I guess not in a much smaller form..

It's a bit OT, but what the hell. Alienware said (I've read that somewhere) that m14x will be like m15x but thinner and will weight less.

But I bet not much ;)

Yeah I have a new Dell Precision M4500 for work, its 14" but when I place my 14" Asus W3J on top, the Dell is huge in comparison, its actually more like the size of a 15" with a 14" screen, to me this is wrong.

at least compared to my W3J the N43 is only 1.5-2cm wider and actually less depth, where as the dell is 2-3cm deeper and 2-3cm wider, which is considerably, I would be keen to see the dimensions of the M14X but to be honest, i've used Dell for work and My Asus for personal use and I prefer Asus anyway.

Hi all, this is my 1st post... I have one ASUS N43JM and I'm not so happy about it... I bought it in November last and since then I've been experiencied some troubles...

The 1st ones were that the two 1st laptops were DOA (one had VGA issues, all pink imagens, even in BIOS, and the other had just came DEAD, didn't even start up)... Finally the 3rd looked nice, till last month when the keys from keyboard started to pop up like popcorn when I was tipping something... I've send it to RMA here in Portugal and they just rejected cuz they said it was bad handling from me!!! (WT@?!?!?) I said that was not true and then they said that I've have a broken USB port (true), but that issue doesnt matter for the keyboard problem...

So here I am, trying to find a keyboard for this lapton on my own kuz ASUS wanted 40€ for keyboard + 45€ for the job and 30€ just for looking into it!!!! Here in Portugal I can´t find any keyboard for this series, anyone knows were I can find one in Europe that ships to Portugal!

    Tks all in advance!
