I've been monitoring different laptops for a few months for college with this one in my top 3. My biggest concern had been battery life. Another review of this model with the new montevina chip rates the 9 cell at only like 3 hrs. Were you really able to squeeze out 4(that'd be awesome) from the B1 and can you put up a pic of it with the 9 cell on. Thanks a lot for doing the review though, i'll most likely be buying one of these. Now im deciding between this, t500 thinkpad, and waiting to see what graphics card is in the new macbook pro.

This is how it looks with 9 cell battery:

    http://www.gentechpc.com/Asus/M50SV/M50-9-cell-2.jpg

If it's fully charged and just doing web browsing yes I did get 4 hours with 9 cell.

Only a 12 minute difference between the 6 cells isn't very impressive. I guess the B1 is the laptop to get.

The Geforce 9600M GS looks to be around the same in performance to a Geforce 8600M GT DDR3. From what you've shown (in another fabulous review) the 9600M GS pulls 4408 in 3dmark06 at 1280x720 while my 9500M GS pulls 4014 with 177.39 driver at 1280x800. The 9600 series look promising to me.

    Mr. Gentechpc,
could you please clarify which model you were using in those scores and the ones listed in the review?

was it the P8400 cpu, or the T9400 cpu?

IF its e p8400 i'll be doubly cheesed
i didn't expect to see an extra 700+ 3dm06 scores, AND an extra 50mins battery life. as well as the faster and more ram, and bigger hdd.

grrr, a difference of 3 weeks it make for me it think. i should have waited. eff sharp

hmm which model should i get. i do paint but as a amateur and not much and not intense so that doesnt really matter but mostly the usual with gaming proably fps most of the time and basically every other category. will the different models produce noticeably different results?

ps: sometimes i have to convert movies for my ipod will that become faster with the b1?

There won't be much of a difference in gaming between the A1 and B1 for most games. However, converting movies will require quite a bit of CPU power, so it would be slightly faster with the B1 model. I think either one would be fine for you and are fully capable of performing the tasks you mentioned. You should base your decision on your budget and whether you want to have a more future-proof notebook or not.

Great review Ken! I love how you put so much time and effort into the main new releases. If the C90P falls thru, this is a laptop I would get to replace my C90S.

Future proof as in it can run more CPU intensive programs that are coming out in the future, better.

I guess the prices would be off the charts. but i don't think we (especially the software companies) are ready yet. From what i read, even if you have a quad core pc if the software is not prepped for multi-threading then it would have no sense. Especially in gaming. Although there is another technology that toshiba is presenting through their Qosmio G50 . It's similar to the processor that the PS3 is using

Im always here :p just taking a break from the Asus forum sub section and been focusing on the desktop sub section and helping to bring desktopreview.com up from the ground by being one of the more active members on the new site. I just built a new PC so been really happy with it and running it thru the paces.

My C90S was faster than my old desktop, but the new one... o_O hows 19,400 3dmark06 sound :p or triple digit FPS in any game I toss at it with max settings in 1920x1080 resolution.

So, is the 8gb express card thing a standard pack in from asus or it something you guys add on your own? Should it be available if I buy it from another vender? I was probably going to buy from you guys but it seems you are sold out now. :(

The 8GB card is an Asus/Gentech offer. Sometimes Asus does special deals with their vendors. For instance I think it was Xotic that was offering a 160GB External hard drive, and some other reseller was offering a 4GB USB flash drive. That specific deal was only through the 15th of June and is over now (According to the Asus website).

Hmm I dunno whats up with your wprime error Ken.

You ran it as administrator? Thats the first thing I always try if something wont work right in Vista. That or on my most recent Vista install I actually turned UAC off completely.

Other than that, if you cant get it working. I suggest you try superpi for now, its still a well known cpu benchmark and can show some relative numbers in the difference of the cpu speeds.

(P.S. 11.217seconds is the wprime for the new desktop :p)

    Dear Crispy,

Mix yourself a drink and relax. These guys are do not have a crystal ball and thus are not equipped to predict the direction of the ever changing technology in this arena.

Word of advice. Start a garden. Vegetable or flower will suffice. It helped me. Things have slowed down considerably. I am no longer quite as obsessed with acquiring the latest and greatest.

Although, I will admit some vague relief at not springing for the M50SV now that the latest and greatest - the M50VM has made it appearance. On the other hand, I will *pay* too. The day it is delivered, the M50Q4 (quad 4) with a 500GB HD partitioned with XP Pro and Vista 64 bit Ultimate - on special for $1099 will be announced. :D  :D  :D
