I tried that but it said my notebook was not eligible for RMA and I needed to contact customer service. I'm using the Canadian site, perhaps that makes a difference.
Does ASUS replace/repair notebooks after my 30 days have run out with Newegg? .. On the box it says my laptop is covered with a 12-month accidental damage warranty, I'm hoping that covers faulty laptops that break on their own?

Oh, that's too bad. I'm in the USA so I don't know about Canadian Newegg...
I would get it exchanged though - dealing with ASUS for an RMA is going to take significantly longer. Your best bet is probably to do a live asus support chat and then save that to a text file and forward it to newegg with your case number (if you have one).
The ASUS warranty should be 2 years for parts & labor, where the 1 year accidental warranty is only good for one incident and covers stuff like spills, drops, broken LCDs, etc.
Your problem is definitely covered under the regular (non-ADW) warranty. You need to register for both warranties though, For an excellent guide see: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/487940-asus-rma-warranty-guide.html
Newegg is probably required by law to accept returns for defective merchandise... you can probably threaten to report them or something. -
Thank you for your help. That guide was very helpful as well!
I have activated my Accidental Damage Warranty when I received the laptop (I filled the online form but I still need to mail out the confirmation email and copy of the invoice). Can't find where I can activate the standard warranty (Asus webpages are confusing) but I'm hoping I reach them by phone or live chat tomorrow (Canada doesn't seem to have 24/7 support) to ask about it and about what's wrong with my notebook. I also submitted an online support request so I've got a case number.
So I guess tomorrow I contact Asus to agree that it's a defective item, have Newegg accept what Asus said and issue me an RMA, ship my notebook and pray A. I get a replacement, and B. It doesn't break in a couple of days -
Just to update this, on Monday I talked to Asus and they told me to return it to Newegg, so I requested a return and it went smoothly and today I received a new laptop (exactly a week since I received the original one). Nice job Newegg .. So far so good but as the problem didn't occur until the 2nd/3rd day, I'll abuse this one for a week and see if it stays working.
One thing I noticed is that this one came with a different AC adapter (the green light is just a dot/circle not a line, if you get what I'm trying to say). It also isn't making that buzzing sound the old one did, so maybe that was the problem.
I have a question though, I have already created the recovery DVDs using the original laptop before it broke and I had to return it. Do I need to create yet another set of recovery DVDs on the new one? or would the original set work just fine as it's the same laptop model just different serial number? --I really don't feel like burning 5 more DVDs :/
Anyway, I'm cautiously happy so far with the laptop *touches wood* ... Thank you very much for your help! -

Your original DVD set is fine as long as it's the same exact model.

(Possible) BIOS Recovery on Asus A42JV/K42JV Notebook - Format USB Flash Drive with FAT filesystem.
- Download the BIOS image from Asus support website.
- Rename the BIOS file (K42JvAS.XXX) to K42Jv.BIN
Based on the BIOS file in the C: drive (preloaded windows)
- Plugged in the USB Flash Drive to USB port on the notebook.
- Pressed & hold Ctrl+Home keys while powering on the notebook by pressing the power button. Do not released the Ctrl+Home keys yet.
- Released the Ctrl+Home keys after a couple of seconds (?).
- Asus Easy Flash utility should appeared on the screen & executed the BIOS recovery (BIOS flash).
Resources
I bet, if the windows is still the preloaded windows, to do BIOS recovery just need to press the Ctrl+Home keys while powering on the notebook. I guess it will read the BIOS image from the C: drive.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -
Hello, i want do overclock with my laptop: K42JV, but when i choose clock generation pll clock control is different from the picture in the first message. How i can overclock my laptop?
-
To overclock, in addition to post #1, please look post #14.
As you can see in the SetFSB screenshot:-
- address 0x000F: D8. Decrease this value. For example, decreased it to D7 & stress test the CPU, for example using Prime95. If no error occurred, decreased to D6. Repeat the procedure until your notebook lock-up.
- address 0x1000: 31. After you got the stable value at address 0x000F, increased this value. For example, increase it to 32 & stress test the CPU. Repeat the procedure until you got the most stable value.

I noticed a little improvement with Nvidia latest driver, version 275.33. The WEI (Windows Experience Index) score for the graphic card is increased with this version. I would guess the new score is based on the GT335M GPU performance instead of Intel HD Graphics one. With older Nvidia driver, version 270.61, overall WEI score is 4.1 while with version 275.33, the overall WEI score is 5.3. Please see pictures below.

I found BIOS "Setup Engine" module (BIOS setup menu) in the BIOS. Plenty of options available, including hidden options. One thing that got my attention is " Primary Display" menu. Unfortunately, I don't know how to unhidden them yet.
Last edited by a moderator: Feb 6, 2015 -
Some kind of switch ON/OFF for Optimus ?
-
I don't know but with that menu, we can choose between IGD, PEG & PCI. IGD stand for internal graphic device (Intel HD), PEG stand for PCI Express Graphics (dedicated GPU, for example Nvidia) & PCI (probably any GPU connected to PCI interface) as primary device. I'm skeptical that this menu can set Nvidia as primary though (Optmus off). If there is no physical wiring between Nvidia & display, setting to PEG will only causing blank screen.

I'm having a serious problem with my notebook. I was using it (just playing a game), and out of nowhere the power shut off. I tried to turn it back on, and the power light flashed, but nothing else happened. I've tried recharging it (although it was plugged in at the time and the battery was at ~70%), as well as other things like removing the battery and power cable, holding the power button for 30 seconds and then putting everything back, etc. Nothing seems to work.
I've managed to get the little lightbulb light to turn on as well as the light that shows that it's charging, but that's all. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's still under warranty so I could have it sent in, but school starts in a couple of days so I'd really like to avoid it if at all possible. -
Usually notebook turn off itself for three reason:-
- Overheating
- Hardware failure
- CPU/GPU/any component trying to consume more power than the AC adapter/battery can provide (true for Dell but not sure for others)
Overheating & power issue are recoverable. For overheating, just let it cool down while for power issue, just need to disconnect both AC adapter & battery for a couple of minutes.
Look like yours is hardware problem. I recommend send it to Asus for repair. Do not try fix this yourself. -
Wow, it has been 4 days and they still haven't replied to the technical inquiry, even though they said they would likely reply within 48 hours. Is this normal?
-
Yeah, they usually like that. You'll need to call them instead.
-
Yeah, I called them and now it's all arranged.

Hi,
I disassembled my A42JV today by following this guide. I did re-paste thermal paste & clean the FAN grills a bit. Unfortunately, I don't have proper digital camera. If not, I can write complete disassembly guide. I have several comment though:-
- The (AC) power connector are tightly connected to the plug on the motherboard. I tried a bit & it refused to come off. I decided just removed both main board & daughter board. If I'm able to disconnect the power connector, I don't have to removed the display.
(The AC power connector is the cable connected the daughter board to main board. The daughter board is where the AC power port, ethernet & USB ports are located.)
The upper left is the daughter board. Between the wireless card & CMOS battery, you can see the power connector I'm talking about.
- The heatsink is very disappointing. It doesn't use the spring screws like normally use on a heatsink. It also seems doesn't put any pressure at all on the CPU & GPU which can cause poor thermal conductivity. I replaced the thermal paste & can only see little improvement.
The heatsink feet where the screws go also made of thin aluminum.
TIPS - To clean the FAN, only need to removed the keyboard. The FAN blade is accessible after removing the keyboard (see picture above). There are 4 clips at the top that holding the keyboard in place. Start from left or right, push the first clip to inside the casing (upward), lift the keyboard a little bit & continue do the same thing with the other clips.
- Wireless card also located under the keyboard.
- The CMOS battery also located under the keyboard but it is inaccessible until you removed the upper cover.
- Keyboard is the second item you need to removed after DVD drive when you're going to disassembled A42JV/K42JV notebook. DVD drive is secured by two screws underneath the notebook. Both screws are labeled with a CD icon.

Hello, somebody knows where i can buy this orange termal pad on the videocard?
-
Hi,
If you're referring to the orange tape on the CPU & GPU, it's actually not thermal pad. It just a tape put there by Asus. It's not even required. -
Ok, thank you. Can you tell normall temperature in a simple (when noutbook turn on and programm doesn`t work)
-
Right after booting into windows, the CPU temperatures are in 50C to 60C. Idle temperatures are 45C to 47C. Room temperature between 32C to 36C. When playing games CPU temperatures can goes up to 85C to 91C, almost 15C higher than my Dell quad-core i7-720QM processor. Copper shims might help.
Anyway, it is very fun playing games on this notebook especially when traveling/outstation. -

To clean the FAN, you just need to removed the keyboard. No screws involved. There are 4 pins that holding the keyboard in place. The pins are "spring pins". You just need to use plastic ruler. You can start from right or left. Push one pin toward inside the casing, lift the keyboard a little bit & push the next pin. Repeat the steps for the remaining pins. Then you can use compressed air can to clean the dust on the FAN & grills.
Sorry, I don't have proper camera to show you.

How is the built quality of k series? I am thinking of getting the K42sa with ati 6730.. is it switchable gpu? Can't find much info on k series... also does is mpcie port easily accessible for egpu if possible?!!
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk -
Build quality of A/K series are OK. I already use my notebook for a year & 3 months, everything OK. Nothing broken yet.
I don't know whether K42SA have switchable graphic or not. I can't find this model at Asus website.
On my notebook, there is only one mPCIe port which is being use by WLAN card. I can access it if I removed the keyboard. The accessibility of the mPCIe port can't be guaranteed. On some model they might be hidden. If you're interested with eGPU, you need a notebook with ExpressCard slot & Intel HD Graphics/3000 iGPU. Then for graphic card, you can get Nvidia Fermi desktop graphic card for better performance. This is the list of SB notebooks, suitable for eGPU, you might interested in one of them.
To be honest, I like the A/K series notebook because of the design & some model have good specification. The speaker is a bit poor but it's enough for me. It doesn't prevent me from enjoying my favorite games. I have another notebook for watching movies or listening to music. This notebook have the same graphic card with Alienware M11x, so it's good. -
Assuming he's referring to K43Sa with HD6730M, it doesn't have switchable GPU
-
Also its just that not getting much info on the K series.. -
Our notebook now look older & older nowadays. But since I'm still playing BF: Bad Company 2, it still works great, although I have to overclock a little bit to get better FPS with medium settings.
The only way to get better gaming performance on this notebook is to setup eGPU with Nvidia Fermi desktop graphic card. I'm sure I will do this. -
That's true they're not getting any younger just like us. By the way Kizwan is there any chance to mod the bios of K42Jv? Mine is rev212 and is it a good idea to upgrade to i7 640M, does that generate a lot of heat.
Thanks : ) -
I didn't really look into the BIOS yet. i7-640M should work out-of-the-box. i7-640M & i5-450M (also other i5 processors) have the same max TDP. So, the amount of heat produced should be the same. i7-640M might just a little bit hotter since it have higher frequency. Only a little bit. Idle temp should be the same though. i7-640M support AES-NI. It's *hot* things nowadays. Everyone want to encrypt their windows now.
-
Thanks Kizwan. Thats was a fast reply hehehe.

hello everybody,
I have an idea. I want my laptop (like everyone) be silent and cool while playing. firstly i thought to buy extra copper radiator with the cooler and installed it right into dvdrom slot. but later i realized it is too hard to do due to lack of space /// it is a laptop after all. then i studied back of my lap top and found out the epicenter of heat. it is cpu, gpu and hdd which is really close to them. hdd even slow heats average 35-40 Celsium. Now i want replace hhd from hdd slot to dvd-rom slot, which is on the other cold side thus reducing hdd heat in cpu-gpu zone. i heard about adapters for hhd instead dvd/ audience, any sugestion????? -
-
yeah, just like this. Does anyone tried this? what exactly adapter we need 9" or 12" we have on our laptop? will this be true for sata 2 or it wont suit?
-
My notebook have H-L Data Storage Super Multi DVD Rewriter Model GT32N. According to these sites, it is 12.7mm height:-
Hitachi/LG GT32N 8x DVD±RW DL Notebook SATA Drive (Black) HL Data Storage 0622198-038 GT32N
12.7mm Internal DVD-RW Drive
HDD in caddy should work in this notebook & they should work in SATA 2 speed (if you put SATA 2 HDD). I was going to test this last month since I'm getting 128GB SSD for free but I forgot to buy the caddy. LOL. Maybe next time. -
Is there someone who can assist me with this? I just need the order of the connections starting from the left with the motherboard shown as above. Thanks!Last edited by a moderator: Feb 6, 2015 -

I see posts that mention a disassembly guide for the K42JV. However, I do not see a link to the manual.
I would like to replace my network adapter in the K42JV. But there is not a convenient hatch on the back to get to it (just one for memory, and another for hard drive.) Could someone point me to a disassembly manual that shows how to access the network mini-PCIe slot ? Thank you. -
^It links to this, https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1643148&st=700&p=38898633&#entry38898633
the network adapter is under the keyboard -
Thanks for the link. Exactly what I needed. Realizing I just needed to flip up the keyboard made this an easy, fast, and successful replacement of the network card. All working great now. Thank you.
