    Owner's lounge for Asus GL703.

    I got the GL703GE with GTX 1050ti

The experience around the laptop is a solid A-. Aside for the power throttling (bios/software induced since it's still very cool), it has an excellent screen, good keyboard feel, and nice speakers. The aesthetics are up there! I wish they had more vents just like the MSI GP63/GP73, then this laptop would truly be a perfection in its class.

Have mine undervolted with throttlestop. Hitting 1269 on multicore test cinebench r15
I repasted it with no visible changes, so it seems like they've done a good job at least on mine with the thermal paste.

I prop mine up from behind so there's airflow.

Bios recently updated to 308 which has mitigated most touchpad issues.

    Next Up:
Liquid metal paste and copper pads setup and then reporting cinebench r15 and temps (ETA: 07/01)

Feel free to ping for benchmarks or other misc requests.

Those temps are pretty good!! I recently got my hands on the 703's little brother, the GL503. It has a GTX 1060 w/ i7 7700HQ though. Kind of in a different realm compared to this 703. But it's good to see these results for comparison!

Definitely. I'm currently looking for a laptop that has a high powered and excellent cooling no matter the size. This ultimately renders a high Cinebench r15 result whilst having excellent cooling. If you have any mind please let me know!

    Anyone own a GL703GS?

Looking to pit it against the MSI GE73 8RF. The MSI panel is supposedly better but no G-Sync I believe.

Had problems keeping them in place. Reverting to normal pads. Will try fujilopy whenever I repaste it.

I just setup fujilopy thermal pads.
Temperatures are lower and cinebench r15 scores higher.
I'll have to wait till i run more tests in my office as my home is suffering through the summer heat.

    For thermal paste I use:
    ARCTIC MX-4 - Thermal Compound

I'm still in really warm environments but hitting consistently 1200-1250 on Cinebench r15 (multicore tests) with 72 degrees max on the processor.

I'll try to get in a cooler place to hit some new peaks

Not hitting new peaks for some reason (bios "310" update recently may have caused this).

My temps are definitely lower after multiple cinebench r15 runs

    I have just gotten a GL703GS-DS74.
The particular unit I received has an AUOptronics display AUO329D B173HAN03.2.

It appears this display's characteristics were measured in Florian Glaser's review of the ROG Chimera G703GI at notebookcheck.se:
    https://www.notebookcheck.se/Test-A...0-Full-HD-Laptop-Sammanfattning.308390.0.html

Assuming those measurements are representative of other units in this display model line, they look pretty good for gaming, but I am more interested in other applications. Kind of disappointed because I was expecting a display with near 100% sRGB coverage, but Glaser measured only 93%. The brightness was also fair but not great, compared to a Dell XPS 15 9570. (However, my display's brightness seems fine for indoor use.) The contrast and color accuracy though were pretty good out of the box in his measurements, and response times were very good for an ips.

My particular display has a moderate amount of backlight bleeding at the edges, especially the bottom left and right. Not noticeable in most situations, though.

I very much enjoy the monitor but unlike you I don't have strict graphics requirements (I mainly code). In my job I just plug to a higher rgb monitor for graphics related tasks.

Thanks for the lcd screen grading links.

My cinebench r15 score dropped by ~100 this last month. Temperatures are the same so I'm guessing software (bios/windows updates) ? Can anybody cross reference. Currently average 1150 on multicore cinebench r15.

After hours of trying to cool this machine and trying different thermal pastes and cooling pads, trying to find manual control software and hacking the bios to squeeze obvious performance out of this. Asus is working way too hard to block enthusiasts. Also the cooling needs some work.

Just ordered the upcoming MSI GP73 from xoticpc!!! Can't wait for this machine that respects more the enthusiasts that want to take their laptop to the edge. Also very appreciative of the website and long life services it offers.

Hi! Owner of Asus Strix Scar GL703GS (with GTX1070) here. Got it two months ago. After two weeks of use, keyboard died completely. RMA'd it, got it back week ago. They had swapped the whole motherboard.

Now, when using laptop in desktop mode, zero 3d acceleration, GPU temps go up to ~63C and fan is blowing constantly.
When gaming, temps quickly rise to 85-90C range and I can see from the ROG center whatever that GPU is throttled very often, all the way down to about 250MHz. It quickly picks up to 1440+MHz. This fluctuation causes games to stutter badly.

Is it safe to say they effed up thermal paste for GPU ? Which benchmarks should I run to ensure bad performance? Any tips to solve and recommendations for thermal paste etc.?

CPU temps are fine, I believe.

One other thing that really bugs me is USB port charging ability while laptop is in sleep mode. Plug a phone in, it shows charging but no charge is replenished. I googled it and looked at power saving issues but nothing helped.
Charging works fine when laptop is up and running, plugged in mains or not.
On older laptops this has worked very well. Those have had a single USB port dedicated for this. GL703GS has this functionality on all four USB ports, but seems it gives out such weak AMP output that it is useless. Why bother? Haven't tried USB-C port.

    Thanks!

Edit: wanted to add that other than these issues, I find the laptop to be excellent and would recommend to anyone who travels alot and likes to game too.

    When
When I got mine from the first RMA the heatsink was not fully screwed in. Tried that first.
If you're going to replace the thermal paste, make sure you unplug the battery at the bottom (next to the trackpad).
Also, you don't need to unplug the fans. Just unscrew the heatsink and rotate/flip the heatsink and fans attached to quickly repaste and test (of course scerw heatsink screws only) if application is good.

For benchmarks just look up on your favorite search engine "hwbot 8750h" for example. It should be around 1240-1280 on cinebench r15 mulitcore.

It should be tight but not over-tightened, and make sure the pressure is applied evenly all across.

That baby is coming this Tuesday (Force Willing!). Already played with a gp63 and was super impressed! Now getting this as my main driver. TBH the Asus GL703 is an excellent all around machine but for that extra performance kick, I'd have to go with the MSI GP63/GP73 this generation.

I noticed asus adding an extra vent on the Asus GL504/GL704 and the reviews show better cooling and performance. At least they're improving every generation.

In case anyone wondering, I took the overheating laptop to a local shop. They said it was missing thermal paste on both CPU snd GPU. They applied some cheap ****, but atleast it no longer throttles in Divinity: Original Sin 2 (Definitive Edition) on maxed graphics settings.

Only gripe I have regarding cooling still, the GPU is always 1443MHz in desktop and this causes fan to blow noisily constantly. Wonder if it could be underclocked when no 3D acceleration needed?

How was this even possible? The thermal paste usually comes pre-applied on the heatink itself. Did you buy the laptop brand new or used? If you want to apply something better, you can buy Arctic Silver and replace the cheap one with it. To clean the paste you should use paper towel slightly wet with WD40. Once cleaned, clean the surface with another paper towel wet with alcohol. Then apply the new thermal compound.

Bought the laptop new, after a few weeks the keyboard died completely. Sent it to Asus warranty repair, got it back and note said "motherboard replaced". Apparently whoever did the job forgot to reapply thermal paste? Good stuff.

Wow, this is definitely a job overlooked by the service tech. Sucks that you had to suffer from this and paid extra for the local shop to resolve it.

Anyone know any hardware monitoring software that actually shows the GL703GM fan speed as HWmonitor, openhardwaremonitor and speccy don't see the fans at all.

    GL703GS-E5012T here...

(Serious) Issues (reproducible after very first boot + Steam installed):
    1. USB (all ports) disconnecting on heavy file copy (20+GB) from external USB 3.x drive to local drives (tried both SSHD and M.2). Common issue.
    2. sudden freezes/BSODs while gaming for 10-20mins (can't go past the snowed mountains intro in Raise of the Tomb Raider for example). CPU temp 88-92°C, GPU <80°C so nothing critical. This is uncommon issue.
    3. some users reported inverse ghosting with display panel AUO B173HAN03.2 [AUO329D] (still have to check mine). Also with G-Sync OFF. Common issue? See #33
These issues are reproducible after very first boot + Steam installed only, and even after all updates (including manual Samsung P961 driver 3.x update). Reproduced both on Win10 1803 and even after forcing upgrade to 1809.

Bug n.1 (copying files from external USB 3.x high-speed drive to disks):

It hangs at 6% while copying and disconnects all USB devices including mouse and keyboard that stop working.
Seems to happen only with USB3.x external drives, no problem with slow USB 2.0 devices.

I haven't experienced bugs 1 or 2 personally (maybe I just got lucky). As for the ghosting, it's definitely there, but it's only noticeable for me on green backgrounds/objects. It's also way, way worse at 60 fps than at 120+ fps, so I don't really mind since I'm the kind of person to play at lower settings to get the highest possible framerate. It's disappointing in a high-end laptop, but I can live with it since I love the rest of the laptop. I'm sure that if I had the other issues I wouldn't be so forgiving.

A co-worker of mine got himself a gaming PC for Christmas, straight from Costco. The GL703GE. He brought it in to work today because it's running really loud, with fans cycling even at idle. I tried helping him by undervolting by 125mV, and that quieted the fans (set to Balanced btw) until starting a game. Running One Man's Sky (only thing he had installed), the fans roar back to life, and within 5 minutes, both CPU and GPU are in upper 80sF. I get the 7850H running hot, but the 1050Ti running that high is a bit worrying. Is this a dud, or typical for this laptop and/or1050Ti?

Repaste buddy. The heatsink might not be tight too. This is are common I've seen on mine after RMA.

It should not be hitting those temps, especially with the 1050ti.

2nd RMA replaced the mobo and 1, 2 solved! Got it back with high temps though (96-98°C after 2 mins in games, before it was 87-88°C) so I've sent it back for a 3rd RMA, sigh...

Hey, I have a problem with the asus rog gaming center software. The point is that the temeprature and clock speed of the processor and GF card are not shown. Also, the gaming center button does not work - when I press it, nothing happens so I run this software from the menu. . After all, everything looks like it's okay. Can anyone help ?

For the buttons to work you have to install "ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys" from MS Store (uninstall the old one)

Many thanks I'll try. In the meantime, I read and read and ... when you are looking for problems - you find problems :)

    https://www.google.com/search?clien.....1..gws-wiz.......0i22i30j0j0i10.w4l0mwuwxlA

A lot of text about the problem with the maximum speed of the fans. Some write that this happens after updating the bios or graphics drivers. Is it a big and known problem or individual cases? Should I update bios and GF drivers or stay on what I have if everything works ok?
    Thanks for the info.

Operation ShadowHammer APT targeted ASUS Live Update Utility

Kaspersky Lab has uncovered a new advanced persistent threat (APT) campaign affecting more than a million computer users worldwide. Between at least June and November 2018, Operation ShadowHammer targeted users of the ASUS Live Update Utility, injecting a backdoor.

Each backdoor code contained a table of hardcoded MAC addresses – the unique identifier of network adapters used to connect a computer to a network. Once running on a victim’s device, the backdoor verified its MAC address against this table.

If the MAC address matched one of the entries, the malware downloaded the next stage of malicious code. Otherwise, the infiltrated updater did not show any network activity. In total, security experts were able to identify more than 600 MAC addresses hard coded into the malware.

A blog summarizing the attack can be found on Securelist

Hey, the request for help with such a situation - today after turning on the computer, the bios itself has been updated automatically ... I'm surprised because earlier I decided about such matters myself. Anyone else has met with something like that ?

I just want to add that I know what an Asus Live Updeate is , but it was an update with out it. I just turned on the computer and instead of the desktop - there was red note that the bios is updated "do not turn off the computer". I also checked the update history by ALU - there is no information on the bios update. Thanks for the support ;)

    Hi,

My advice, remove all asus bloatware, leave only the hotkeys app, so you are able to change the fan profile mode fast [silent, balanced & overboost] everything else is trash!

Bios unlocked & liquid metal added to cpu (not to the gpu, too big of a risk of ruining everything)

    my cinebench R15 & R20 scores.

I like this laptop now when it's working properly, lots of horsepower and easy to take with you everywhere.
