I have sluggish webcam performance too however it's manageable. I guess we'll just have to wait for a driver update or something from ASUS.

Just got my Slappa M.A.S.K. backpack today. It fits this puppy very nicely. The laptop slides into the dedicated sleeve very easily but is not loose at all.
There is a very good review on the G73jh boards on this bag. It states however that the flap for the laptop sleeve will not close because the velcro is too short. They must have corrected this because mine does close. The velcro catches by not allot but enough to give a decent seal.
The problem with the Targus bag that ships with this is that you have to "pull" the corners of the bag over the laptop to close it. Not the case with this bag. No pulling or tucking...just zip it up and your done. Plenty of room for the huge power supply and whatever else you may have.
I got the High Five face with this and couldn't be happier. I paid $136.00 for this shipped but it is well worth it. It looks AWESOME and is made from some really rugged feeling material. Quality all the way round! -
Hello everyone,
Just received my today from GenTech. What a beautiful machine. A couple of questions:
1. Upon starting the machine I wasn't give an option to create recovery disks). Not problem, I thought, I'll use AI Recovery Burner. Only to find out that it reports "Recovery Partition Does Not Exist". Any ideas?
2. I was under the impression the laptop came with a drivers disk. Is this the case? Or is it something that I need to download/create? Mine didn't have such disk.
Thank you. -
I can only tell you what I got but I paid a few bucks extra to have a recovery disk made for me. I also received both a ASUS driver disk as well as a ASUS BlueRay Suite disk. -
Cheers, -
My only afterthought is that I should have gone with a bigger SSD. The OS is fine but other Microsoft applications like SQL Server and Visual Studio install a lot on the "C" drive even if you set the install to another drive. -

Finally got my JW today. Typing this on it right now. This thing is just absolutely incredible. Huge, fast, and I literally cannot even hear the fans at all.
Now if someone could point me in the direction of the best drivers and stuff for this thing I would much appreciate it. -
Don't worry Ken I'm not going to ask you to drive to New York!!!!! -
@Wa22ioR (Lyle):
Please do not bold all the text in your posts. It hurts the eyes!
Thank you. -
Respectfully,

Thanks.
I'm waiting for the G53JW to become available and figured I could pick up some good info in this thread. I just finished reading the whole thread and have only one comment:
In a previous laptop I was able to fix the webcam issue by somehow (don't remember how) telling the computer or driver or software to use USB 2.0 camera instead of default "Virtual" camera. I don't know if that will work with the G73, but it's a possibility. Sometimes the software or driver or something gets confused by the type of camera to use.
I had an Asus gaming laptop years ago (don't remember the model) but it had a terrific webcam (2.0mp). Smooth as silk with a good, sharp picture. What happened Asus? Did you go for a contract for cheap, crummy webcams? If so, shame on ya! Better no webcam at all than a blurry, stuttering one! It's an insult to your loyal fans. -

Wow, this laptop is truly amazing. I did have a few minor issues with the mouse software messing things up, but uninstalled it and it works fine. Actually got a blue screen when I tried installing the mouse software for some reason. Other than that and the useless bloatware crap that it comes loaded with I am HIGHLY impressed.

i ordered a G73JW last friday, and i'm a little bit excited because i had no computer since over 2 month (old one broke).
May i expect a driver disk in the shiping box (a new clean windows installation is planned), or do i have do download the drivers from the ASUS support page? -
You can make recovery disks from the recovery HDD partition (there's an included utility to do that). Last time I checked, Asus had no updates for G73JW, so the versions on the disk should be fine. -
Has anyone opened it up to see where the wireless card is? I already have an Intel 6200 card so I'll be ordering the stock configuration and hope to be able to put my own wi-fi card in myself. On some laptops it's very easy... on others, not so easy.

@ Phatal
thank you for the answer. I don't need more than the driver disk -

Hi all, first post at notebook review.
I bought my wife a G73JW-A1 from amazon 2 weeks ago. She absolutely loves it over her old desktop. I've been messing around with it as well (when she isn't using it!). I'm strongly considering getting one for myself to replace my aging gaming desktop. To that end, I've been doing some benchmarking on the wife's JW. I'll share my results as I know there are plenty of people out there looking for benchmark numbers besides what can be found in reviews.
First up I installed Oblivion GOTY edition. I did not install any mods but I set every option to the highest available including turning on HDR. I played long enough to get to Chorrol and get Prior Maribel's horse. Using the horse I started at the South Gate of Chorrol and then ran along the road without moving the mouse towards Fort Ash. I repeated this several times with different settings using FRAPS 60 second benchmark. Here's the Frapslog.txt. All of these numbers are using the nvidia drivers that came with it (259 I believe) I didn't mess with anything, this is a JW as it shows up, no O/C. There's even still the bloatware on it.
2010-10-13 14:07:31 - Oblivion (1920 X 1080) 0AA - 0AF Turbo Off, Horse Chorrol South Gate towards IC
Frames: 3689 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 61.483 - Min: 40 - Max: 84
2010-10-13 14:11:37 - Oblivion (1920 X 1080) 0AA - 0AF Turbo On, Horse Chorrol South Gate towards IC
Frames: 3518 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 58.633 - Min: 42 - Max: 78
2010-10-13 14:16:22 - Oblivion (1920 X 1080) 0AA - 16AF Turbo Off, Horse Chorrol South Gate towards IC
Frames: 3417 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 56.950 - Min: 41 - Max: 75
2010-10-13 14:20:22 - Oblivion (1920 X 1080) 0AA - 16AF Turbo On, Horse Chorrol South Gate towards IC
Frames: 3231 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 53.850 - Min: 39 - Max: 68
2010-10-13 14:27:27 - Oblivion (1920 X 1080) 4xAA - 16AF Turbo Off, Horse Chorrol South Gate towards IC
Frames: 3076 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 51.267 - Min: 38 - Max: 64
2010-10-13 14:30:31 - Oblivion (1920 X 1080) 4xAA - 16AF Turbo On, Horse Chorrol South Gate towards IC
Frames: 2855 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 47.583 - Min: 33 - Max: 59
The first thing you will notice is that the numbers are better when you don't use the "Turbo" button. What exactly does "Turbo" do on the JW? I also noticed that Oblivion felt smoother without using Turbo. Anyways, very respectable FPS for an older game that still stresses systems today.
Next I loaded SC2 and let it patch. I set all graphics options to their highest setting. For the 60 second benchmark I used the first mission. At the beginning of the mission the AI tells you to review some videos, a screen pops up, after closing the screen I started the 60 sec benchmark. Running Raynor and the 5 soldiers towards the holograph thingy, killing 2 enemies along the road. The 60 secs end right before I destroy the holo. Here's the log:
2010-10-13 12:43:43 - SC2 (1600 X 1024) 0AA - 0AF Turbo On
Frames: 3173 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 52.883 - Min: 34 - Max: 66
2010-10-13 12:35:53 - SC2 (1920 X 1080) 0AA - 0AF Turbo On
Frames: 2861 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 47.683 - Min: 36 - Max: 58
2010-10-13 12:58:29 - SC2 (1920 X 1080) 0AA - 0AF Turbo Off
Frames: 2986 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 49.767 - Min: 34 - Max: 61
Again, very playable at the highest settings.
I just may have to get me one of these. I'll probably have to order from somewhere else besides amazon though as I'd want one of the HD's to be an SSD. -
Actually someone adviced me to go to "power4gear" app and turn "turbo mode" off and turn down the "minimum processor state" to 0%. Doing this to both will let the processor only go to full power when needed and not always at 100% which is a waste of energy and more heat. He said something about performance being better with turbo off because the speeds are asynchronic and some games and benchs report slower performance with turbo on.

SiBEAM's 60GHz WirelessHD technology:
It was one the key selling point during the presentation of the new G73JW at the Computex in June, but it seems that it has fallen between the cracks.
Is there at least one person who has tried the G73JW embedded SiBEAM's 60GHz WirelessHD with the appropriate adapter? -

If anyone installs Adobe CS5 products, and gets an error upon boot about "Microsoft Register Server" crashing, please go to msconfig and disable "AFBAgent" in the services box. This is the Asus Fast Boot service, and it delays the startup of some programs, which apparently causes the Microsoft Register Server to crash. This Register Server does something with Dll's, not really sure what.

i am using 260.63

Thanks! -
Well, I received my G73JW two days ago, and have been spending the time transferring my programs and files from one machine to the other.
My old machine was/is an Alienware 9750. I had it for over two years with minimal issues.. Until the screen died, and needed to be replaced, and one of the two video cards is failing. Time to replace.
I chose the ASUS as the price and performance were right. I wanted sub $2000 (since I was not expecting to need a new machine), and I prefer NVIDIA cards.
Its a champ. No issues out of the box. The keyboard works great (No lag/missing keys), the GPU idles at 40 C, and it is quiet.
I'm hoping it'll last me another 3 years, and it should. I'm not that intense a gamer these days, the first person shooters don't really interest me any more.
It seems to be a solid, well-built machine, and I am pleased. -
i installed the directx june 2010 too
but still hollow gun damn it! anyway i really prefer bad company 2 than medal of honor -
