I just got my A2 from Newegg and so far so good. Has anyone had any issues? Any tricks to turn off all the blue lights?

I was going to post benchmarks. Which software should I use?

I loaded Crysis and it plays in a window. How do I get it out of the window mode and make it full screen?

The backpack is good quality and very rugged.

For Crysis, go into options->system options->video and check the full screen button (you'll probably want to tweak the resolution to be a wide screen res as well).

Just got my g71v-Q1 yesterday. I was all giddy until I tried to create a striped raid setup. Posted in the asus forum with my problem. Where do we go for updated device drivers? Asus' website doesn't have anything for 64bit vista.

Should I just put it back in enhanced mode and see if the problem goes away?

    hey guys,
Do your g71G's have the intel memory speed boost thing? My g71v does not. Do you know if it is possible to get it?

g71g doesn't support RAID :( (in the bios - my first disappointment) - can't speak to the v.

The g71g also doesn't have the "Intel Turbo Memory" module but I can't say I'm concerned since every test I've seen shows it to only help systems with < 1GB of RAM so it's not worth the additional cost.

XoticPC, but to be fair they did their service excellently. They are shipping the thing here to Hungary so it very well may be in customs somewhere...
I decided to go for USPS since that was $200 and the UPS was $500, I didnt foresee this problem and didnt think $300 dollars was worth those extra 3-4 business days wait I was expecting. Man was I wrong...

here's a question to all G71 owners: Does plugging in your headphones generate any type of buzz, as in the G50 models?

Also, any keyboard lag? I guess what i am trying to say is: did the G71 inherit any of the problems of the G50?

    Thanks in advance!

    mute the microphone!
yeah, i thought the buzz was annoying at first, and noticed that everytime I lifted the mouse, or typed, I could hear the clicks. realized the mixer includes the mic.... mute the mic and a whole lot of the buzzing goes away.
I use etymotic ER4P's for headphones and when i'm not listening to music or playing a game, yes I can hear the hard disk electronics and even when the mouse cursor moves.

my g71 is the q1. raid 0 striping works fine. no keyboard lag, at least not that I notice while typing this.

    I'm a happy camper. :)

oh, BTW does the buzzing affect external speakers too? before and after muting the mic in the mixer?

Here is a stupid question. How bad is the bloatware on these? Im debating on ordering the G71G-A2 on the 15th. Im thinking that a "clean" install of Vista might be a bit over my head, being the novice that I am, lol. My other choice is the Gateway 7801u from Newegg.

David, where is your review??? Seems like I've been checking for it every few hours for the past 3 days lol.

It is incredibly easy to reinstall Vista, its really not complicated at all.
Very few steps, very easy to understand.
There will always be bloatware in some shape and form but perhaps a complete reinstall wont be necessary, just uninstall and run ccleaner mate. should be fine ;)

The "buzzing" was inaudible from the speakers before muting the mic. I didn't even know there was a buzzing until I plugged in my earphones.

    Bloatware.... hmm.. that's questionable.
Yes, my 71v-q1 came with a lot of bloatware, however about half of them were needed for control. The touchpad, bluetooth, led lights, the overclocking, the fn/hotkeys... all of those are controlled through software. I wanted to do a clean install of vista, but the recovery disks don't include a "install" disk. I just uninstalled each one I didn't need from the programs & features in the control panel. No noticable speed increase.
Off topic question a bit here: Since I have a legal license to use Windows vista ultimate 64 (that came with the computer), does that make it ok for me to torrent/borrow the installation disk from someone and re-install with options I want?

Well I should think, keep in mind every vista disk contains all versions of Vista. But there are different disks for 32bit and 64bit Vista, if you have a friend who has any other version of the 64 Vista, go make a copy and use your OEM number. Shouldnt be a problem I think. Torrenting is dodgy and would avoid it at all costs...

I guess Im more worried of losing all the necessary things that Caldorosso mentioned, by doing a clean install. Would a clean install be a lot better than manually uninstalling things and running a reg cleaner of some sort? Also, a side question: Is there a list or something of whats safe to uninstall, and whats not, if I were to do it manually? This would be my first laptop, so I dont know about all of the software that might be there specifically for the laptop.

Well, all of it comes on the driver disks that will come with your laptop.
In the asus install program it tells you which programs are drivers, recommended, fixes and optional.
Just reinstall all except optional imo, after a log of googling I found I few of the recommended werent needed for me on other asus laptops and just left them out. not a big thing thing though to choose those few.
    You will be fine.

    Yay!! :D
Just received my g71g-A1! I'm so happy.

Is it really recommended to do a clean install of Vista? If so, why?
I don't care about those extra programs. Or are they configured to start with the laptop boot?

What other things should i dowhen i first turn it on?

I have Office 07, so i was going to install it, then download AVG Free and Online Armor free to be able to run on the Internet and then all the other programs i usually use like VLC Media Player, Firefox and so on...

By the way how is Internet Explorer doing. Since my old rig was obsolete, Firefox was an incredible memory hog and i was wondering if Explorer is better in that aspect and functionality...

I did a clean install and it went fine. Watch out for the drivers - the Asus web site has Intel wireless drivers but it's really an Atheros card (CD has the correct drivers).

You don't really need a cooler for the G71G. It runs very cool for a gaming laptop and the back larger than usual feet which elevates the rear of the laptop to provide excellent air flow.

Sorry for the delay. I've already submitted the G71G-A1 review to notebookreview 3-4 days ago and it's up to the admins to determine what needs to be edited and when they are going to post it.

Here's a few things I'd personally do when I first receive any new laptop

    1. Clean install with the restore disk. During the install, your system will ask for your drivers disk. At this point, perform a hard shut down, restart your laptop and manually install the drivers in windows. If you put in the drivers disk when it asks you, your system will install everything (including all the bloatware) on to your laptop.
    2. Update windows
    3. Download/install a reliable antivirus software. I personally use AVG but Avast and Avira Antivir are also equally good options.
    4. Download EVEREST to check your system's hardware (make sure it's the laptop you ordered) and also check temperatures
    5. Check your hotkeys, webcam, and ports to see if they are working properly.
    6. Double check with your device manager and make sure all your hardware are working properly.

    Hope this help! :)

You don't have to. You could just uninstall the bloatware individually, however even after uninstalling, there will still be some files in your registry that don't get deleted. A fresh install of Vista eliminates this issue.

You'll still need to update Vista even if you don't perform a reinstall. There's lots of security updates that are needed

    Things I uninstalled:
    Norton Antivirus (Must)
    Check Mail (optional)
    Asus Live update (Must)
    Office trial (optional)
    Splendid (optional)
    Smart Logon (optional)

Why did you uninstall Norton Internet Security? Is it worse than the free versions of AVG AntiVirus and Online Armor firewall?
And can iconvert that Office trial to a working one with a serial key?

any word on if there is gonna be an SLI version of this? The reason i am asking is months ago i posted a thread about rumors that the G70/1 series will get 9800 gts SLI, i guess they decided not to do it?

Norton is probably the worst and most resource-hungry antivirus software on the market. I personally use AVG instead :)
For office, I put "optional" in parentheses since I have the full professional version in hand ;) You can keep it if you want.

    Unfortunately, no...

There's options in your Realtek HD audio manger where you can change the settings of your sound. I usually set the environment to "none" and the equalizer at "Live".

    Hi guys,
Did anybody have a chance to compare the G71G screen quality with the Sony AW (the 1920x1080 non-LED version)? I am looking for the "best" screen since most of my work is programming + excel + email + browsing. I will also watch some movies (x264 and xVid).

    Many thanks !

    Also,
Is the storage G71G-A1/A2 in Raid-0? I believe I read somewhere that the X1 didnt support Raid in the BIOS.. but I might be mistaken on this.

No RAID support :( I guess I'll be springing for an Intel SSD drive sooner than I planned.

As to the screen, I ccan't speak to it compared to the Sony. I had a Dell E1705 before this (1920x1200) and the G71G's screen is a lot brighter (because of the dual lamps). I don't know what the advertised contrast ratio is but the blacks do suffer a bit because of it though.

My use case sounds very much like yours (with the occasional gaming as well, otherwise you'll be better off with something with lower-end graphics unless you're doing programming for 3D intensive games or apps). I actually liked the Dell form factor and keyboard a lot more than the G71G (this is about an inch wider and a good bit thicker than the Dell) but the 6GB of RAM is a pretty big deal for me since I do a fair amount of work with VM's for testing.

I see... so it seems that there is no reason to go with the A1 version instead of the X1 version. From what I could gather, the only difference between the two is that the A1 has 1 extra hard drive, 2 Gb of Memory , Hard drive bracket for the 2nd HD... and that's it??

Yes, those are the only differences, and no, there is a very good reason why you should go with the A1 version. It's about the same price as the X1 if you purchase from ebay with the live.com cashback promotion. ;)

Advertised contrast ratio is 600:1 which is way above average than most laptop screens.
