Also, what program are you using for a load while testing your GPU temps?

Furmark for the GPU and Prime95 for the CPU.

Be aware that when running both Prime95+Furmark at the same time, you will see the CPU throttle down to 798mhz. I found that running throttlestop seems to stop it from throttling and this is the only fix until Asus releases a BIOS update for us 53/73SW owners(it affects them all).

    Here is link to throttlestop,
    Downloads | Tech|Inferno

This problem wouldnt be so bad if it was just strictly happening under artificial stress, but TailGunner found that GTA4 is definitely affected by it, and after running TS, the game runs at much higher FPS and no slowdowns like before.

Well, my G53S doesn't care for those speeds much at all. The moment I apply those speeds to the GPU the display driver crashes and restarts. :( Bummer

    Hello ppl!

I watched the thread and i conclude to buy this laptop but before the checkout i would like to ask the owners some critical questions which no one mentioned...

1.I plan to use a SATA 6G SSD (vertex3) , so i would like to know if the second free HHD port is sata 3 or sata 2.

2.I also never figured out if the laptop supports Nvidia Optimus Technology and if not is there a way to manually disable the 460m (even from bios) and use the onboard GPU for battery economy?

    3. The wireless adapter is by Intel or from other manufacturer , and if yes are you satisfied with its performance?

4.Finally is it possible to OC the CPU a bit? like 2.2 or 2.3 ?

    Thank you in advance!
    Nick :)

    1. I believe the SATA ports only support SATA-2.

    2. No, you can only use the nVidia card.

    3. It comes with an Atheros wireless/bluetooth combo card. I haven't had any problems with disconnects but I've heard implications that others may have. I'm thinking of replacing mine with an Intel 6230.

    Thanx for the prompt answer!

This mobo sure has sata3 ports , check here
Intel HM65 Express Chipset - Overview

HM65 Express up to six sata2 ports and up to 2 sata3 ports , but i dont know the distribibution of the ports for G53SW..
Would you like to check it plz?

Ahh and something else .... is the laptop easy accessible for HDD/Ram/WiFi Card replacement?

BTW Atheros cards suck i think i order the Intel ultimate 6300 for 35$...

I'll let others chime in about the presence or lack of SATA 3 ports on the G53S, I was under the impression that there are none.

The Intel 6300 is a great wireless card but you'd lose bluetooth capability with that card and the G53S doesn't have the 3 wireless antenna needed to really take advantage of the 6300, at least not out of the box. That's why I'm looking at the 6230. You keep the bluetooth and this card is designed for 2 antenna.

I did this correctly and I'm still having trouble installing the 270 driver from nVidia's site. Not sure what is up with that. I'm currently running 267.21 dloaded from Asus's website about a week and a half ago (stock gpu driver was 266.xx). I've been monitoring my GPU temperatures using HWmonitor from CPUID and it idles at around 60 degrees, I live in Vancouver, Canada and it doesn't really get too hot here (gladly). I've noticed the gtx460m go up to 85C in COD4 (while at around 60FPS in-game) which isn't even that demanding. Benchmarks show this card can run COD4 at higher framerates. Is the 267 driver really unstable and making the GPU run hotter? Is 85C normal or should I be concerned? Any help with this would be appreciated thanks.

How safe is it to download drivers from laptopvideo2go? I've never really had a computer with a dedicated GPU so I'm new at this whole keeping up with video drivers thing lol. My main concern is temperatures really, how bad is 80-85C while playing games on the highest settings?

Their drivers are safe to download, no viruses or malware. If you download beta drivers that they host they may have bugs in them, but if you stick to release versions you shouldn't have any problems.

I think 85c is fine but I wouldn't want to see much higher. Mine hits 85c when running Furmark.

The G53SW has the sandy bridge processors and the cougar point chipset so and it supports SATA III hard drives in SATA ports 0 & 1. The rest of the SATA ports, 2 though 5, are SATA II and are used for the optical drive.

    @adampk17Ι
thought it supported 3 antennas though...
So i think i will turn to 62xx then.
Btw in my area here i cannot find 6230 but 6200 , do you know if there are any major differences in order to avoid buying abroad ?

Once again thanx a lot! :)

The 6230 is a bluetooth convo the 6200 is not. You'll lose bluetooth conectivity with the 6200 but everything else is the same. Here's the links:
    6200
    6230

I hear that Crucial's C300 and M4 series are pretty good and on the cheaper side. Although some people in this forum use the OCZs so you might look into a Vertex 3.

Also has anyone been having problems with the usb 3 port? Whenever I connect my usb 3 portable hard drive in, it always suggests me that the device can run faster if its connected to a super speed usb 3 port. I thought it could be a driver issue so I got the latest driver from asus website but still no go. suggestions?

In another forum another guy told me that G53SW has an independent bluetooth module , so in order to avoid conflict with the bluetooths i need the 6200 instead of 6230.

Are you 100% sure that the module for the wireless is wifi+bluetooth combo , because i thought i figured it out and now same confusion again! lol

Also could you please tell me the manifacturer? Is it atheros or azure?

To tell you the truth Im not sure if theyre independent or not, from what I have read from the g53jw forum you will lose bluetooth. I'll let somebody else confirm this. The manufacturer is Atheros.

Nope. I just recently bought mine from the Microcenter in the KC area and it did not come with the caddy for the second drive. I had to order mine from the Asus estore. It's not too expensive to buy, just anoying to have to wait.

    Hi guys!

I just got my ASUS G53SW-A1 today. Very excited.

When I looked at the bottom of the laptop (literally turned it upside down and have a good look), i found that there is a part of it has a lid thing on which has small rectangular holes in them.

Now i suspect that would be for ventilation and make the overall temperature of the laptop lower, but the problem is when i look through those holes i can actually see the IC boards (with the components of the circuit facing me).

Doesn't this mean that this laptop is ESPECIALLY prone to water? Like any moisture/liquid that gets through thoses holes will go DIRECTLY to the electrical circuit....

I mean my ASUS N53SV also has holes in the bottom, but when u look though them there is another layer of plastic and u dont see the IC board.

    Any thoughts?

Not trying to be rude or anything but you probably shouldn't have this $1200+ laptop anywhere near water to begin with.

Another question, while looking at the ASUS ultility and bloatware guide, one of it was describing:

"Asus WebStorage - Available only on Eee PCs. Users can enjoy free online storage. With an internet connection, you can access and share any files whenever you want and wherever you are. "

But how come my Asus G53SW also has the WebStorage program on it? Should i remove it? Or can i actually use it?

    Thanks in advance :)

@Guss35: None taken, I just want to know if my thoughts are correct. Countries like Taiwan often have very high humidity, and thats why i want to know.

I would not think that high humidity alone would ever cause you any problems. The humid air will get in to the laptop anyway - large holes or not.

I agree. I mean if you have a pot of boiling water under the thing that's a different story but just regular humidity shouldn't affect this computer at all. It would be strange for the manufacturer not to take normal humidity (especially of their own country) into account.

    OK, so I bought myself some RAM today! I picked up this: G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Laptop Memory Model

I'm fairly sure I did my research and this is fully compatible with the G53SW. Shouldn't be any issues. I'm only planning on putting 4GB into it, though. My question is whether I should swap out the 2GB stick for 8GB total, or just keep the 2GB stick in and go to 10GB?

What is the latest version of nVidia PhysX software for GTX460? Where I can download it?

I installed Batman Arkham Assylum and it is said that I should update my PhysX software. But I think I have the latest one.

Should I update nVidia graphic drivers? Should I just repair it, or uninstall then install it again?

    Thanks :)

    Hi Godaemon,
I also need to repalce my wireless/bluetooth card. I like to koow if you discovered these are two different parts in G53SW or it is combination card?
Also any hint in how easy or difficult is to access the parts and change them.
    Do appreciate your feedback.

I confirm that wifi and bluetooth are independent , so for all of us who need an upgrade 6200 is the way to go..

    @artimess
    Watch this on Youtube
    It describes the whole process.
To give you an example i watched it , without any previous experience in laptops and managed to connect a second drive SSD in about 20 mins.. You need to be carefull if you are newbie...

I wonder how feasible it would be to install an Intel 6300 and rig up a third antenna wire with something like this?

Having never installed wi-fi antennas before I'm not sure if you can just put the third antenna any old place it will fit or if there are best practices to follow.

Hey G53SW people! I think I'm about to take the plunge and join your camp. As you can see by my sig, it's high time for a replacement for my current laptop :D

So I'm pretty much set on this one. If anyone knows of a better deal, show me!

I have about $250 left in my budget and I am thinking about upgrading the RAM or the hard drive. For that kind of money I could max out the RAM (was thinking 16GB of 1600 MHz Kingston HyperX) or get a ~128GB solid state drive (thinking Crucial M4).

I'm leaning towards the solid state drive and upgrading RAM when the price goes down; 6GB should be sufficient until it does. What are your recommendations? RAM? SSD? Something else?

Forget the RAM, get a SSD if you want speed. Honestly unless you do some intensive use of CS5 or run virtual machines you won't use that 6GB of RAM. I never went over 4GB of used RAM with my JH.

That's what I thought, but I actually do use Photoshop moderately and browse the internet with a lot of tabs open... the hang experienced on my Packard Bell prevents me from doing either, let alone both at the same time.

Moderate photoshop won't really benefit from more RAM as for internet browsing, even with lots of tabs you won't get to 4GB RAM usage so 6 is more than enough.

I have a little RAM monitor and with, say, SC2 running in the background while using Firefox with multiple tabs open and a few small programs running as well, I easily get up to using around 75% of my RAM. Not too comfortable with that, hence why I just bought some more.

Besides, RAM is so insanely cheap - I just bought that 8GB of G. Skill RAM for like $60, that's just crazy. It's also a fairly big leap to go from 6GB to getting dual channel with two 4GB sticks/8GB total. I think it's worth it, depending on what you want to do. I also do image editing, and that *absolutely* does take up a ton of memory even when you close everything else. Maybe you don't have to edit images in Photoshop for professional retailers, like me, but these image files can easily be as big as 5 or 6 GB each, and it takes a lot of memory to edit them without slowing everything down to a crawl.

I intend on getting an SSD too, of course, but since RAM was cheaper and I need some for the M11x I'm getting as well, I thought I'd take care of it first. I'm waiting for a really good deal to show up for the SSD, since they are rather prohibitively expensive, unlike RAM.

    hi,

Just bought the g53sw with 2410m cpu. Im really excited now :D hope it comes within the next days.. im stuck with my hp.. and a homemade cooling pad underneath.. i bet its 50+ db.. so it will be very nice with a new high end laptop.. the hp has served me ok.. i guess.. The reason i went for the g53sw is low noise.. and ofc good specs.. Im a little worried about the ports at the right side(hdmi and AC) but other than that.. i really think it will be great!!

did you recently install any new drivers? this happened to me when i installed a realtek driver that was incompatible, but it was fixed when i reinstalled the asus one.

try to see if you can put your computer to sleep when you just turn on your computer (but before you log in to your account). if you can, it's probably some kind of driver issue

Yeah, RAM is insanely cheap. Anyways, what monitoring program are you using and does the figures it displays include the RAM windows 7 loads with recently used programs as well or not?

Personally, I use the gadgets here.

The CPU gadget displays RAM usage as well. I use it, the GPU meter, the Network meter, and the drives meter.

Follow the instruction from the link below. I had the same problem and it's working after doing some binary modifications.

Did anyone feel that their G53SW felt really sluggish with the supplied Asus image of W7? The bloatware is probably to blame, but I encountered hick-ups and short freezes (around 3 seconds) all the time.

Just installed a fresh W7 image and it's about 2 times as responsive.
