It is, i already ran the recovery on the system to restore it to factory state, i think it's installing windows on the drive. You wouldn't happen to have a link to said program would you? I plan to do a clean install, so the recovery is a temp fix just to test if the drive is working.

Edit, the recovery is 87% right now.

With the distro, it allows you to re-partition, and/or "zero" out a drive, not specific to an SSD either. Pretty much anything you need.

I will edit this post when I find the forum post.

    EDIT:

    OCZ Bootable Tools

Make sure your drive is supported then zero both drives, install windows on the drive you prefer, than be on your way. An SSD takes about 10 min to zero out, a regular HDD takes about 30 - 60 min. So I recommend doing both drives so everything will run clean.

Thanks a bunch, I'll let you know how it goes.

    Edit:

Alright, the drive isn't being detected. it only see's the 750gb drive, not the ssd. I'm not sure why it's not seeing it. I also can't boot without removing the ssd.

    Edit 2:

When i use my clean windows install disk, it see's the 120gb ssd, but says it cannot install windows on it. It also doesn't list the 750gb hard drive as an option. When i use the linux cd you linked to, it cannot find my ssd, but see's the 750gb drive. This is strange, any ideas anyone?

    Edit 3:
Maybe I need to remove the 750gb hard drive, and then try and install windows on the ssd? I find it strange the linuz cd, bios, or windows install see the ssd, and i can't boot from the 750gb when the ssd is in.

    Edit 4:
I filed an RMA, since it seems like anything I try the drive is not recognized. I must have gotten a faulty drive.

    Hi I'm thinking of buying G53SW -XA1
Amazon.com: ASUS G53SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop: Computers & Accessories

However it seems that everyone who gave it a poor review mentioned that there is issue with the power button.

    Quote :
First time out the box, this brand new laptop would not even power up due to a faulty power button. Do I need to say more? I later found out online that the issue is known to Asus, something about a faulty magnet sensor buried somewhere next to the trackpad. Nonetheless, Asus continues to manufacture and sell defective units. My advice: buy something else!

As for Amazon, I have only praise for the professional manner in which they handled my order and return. Good job, keep up the good work!

and this review is pretty recent (December 14, 2011)

    Any advice. Thank you

Parrot, there's many postings in this thread about that. I recently posted about my G53SW-XN1 having the same problem with the magnet for the hall sensor magnetized the metal plate where the hall sensor is resting on. When this happens, the sensor no longer registers that the lid is open so that the screen never turns on. The computer still starts up normally minus the built-in screen. You can do one of three things:

    - Don't buy the laptop
    - Send it back for a warranty service when it happens
    - Remove the magnet from the lid, next to the webcam

g53sw with a refresh rate other than 60hz. immediate assumption that you have a 3de model with 3d capable display(120hz). question 1. yellow line at other than 60hz- is this in an application using 3d display? is 3d vision on or off?
nvidia driver version?(latest? stable 28x.69 or 290.36 beta??).
any measurable temperature issues with the different mode? i know just hooking up a secondary display jumps me 10-15 degrees. stands to reason that increasing the draw rate might have a similar impact(especially if using aero instead of classic theme).

-note i don't have the 3de myself, but played with those settings on a 40" 3d ready hdtv. if you have one of those available you can try seeing if the issue shows up on the external display from the notebook in that mode as well.

    Yeah its 3D capabe.
The 3D option was off or on makes no diffrence. and the line is appear in desktop to, not just 3D application

Every icon have like Yellow shadow on them

I want to add screenshoot but print screen result was completly normal.
So its look like the Display that have problem, dunno why

Btw the yellow line dissapear this morning. and I dont do anything at all.
It just fix by itself. Its serriusly weird, maybe a bug or glitch in monitor adapter ?

I bought 2 new sticks of G Skill DDR3 1333 RAM for my G53JW-A1 (and the Intel 320 SSD HDD which is working nicely)

It seems I can only run 3 sticks of ram at once, whether its my new ram or a combination of the old and new, any idea what could be wrong?

Currently can't get it to recognize more than 6GB of ram in Win7 home prem 64 bit.

Any suggestions? Only mem slot free currently is the one directly under k/b. Using both new sticks which seem to be working ok,

When I put all 4 sticks in, it shows I only have 4GB of ram.

humus: if a printscreen didn't catch it and it was a constant effect, then i agree it sounds like a display panel issue. beyond that i doubt there are many people alive who could say for sure what caused it. i'd watch for recurrence and if it happens on any pattern in the future. i just know the 3d vision drivers can cause odd things to happen, but those i'd expect to show up in a printscreen so.. /throws up hands. its a level of complexity on a line with a lemon car that everythings been replaced on twice but still has a problem. sometimes the cause of an error is just too obscure to track down, and you can either hope it goes away on its own, replace things and hope, or start over. heres hoping it stays gone for you.

psteiny: that is a strange one. should be able to cope with 8gb at least on the first gen core i7's. i'm assuming there was no damage apparent to any slots, so have you checked one of the ram sticks isn't bad? i'm guessing you have, given you said you tried combinations of old and new to no effect, which really sounds like a bad slot somewhere to me. leaving it out there if anyone else has ideas.

Mixing and matching ram on this laptop kinda is finicky. I suggest getting the same ram on all four slots(or just two). I have had issues with the stock RAM conflicting with G.SKILL RAM.

Hi everyone greetings, first post, but I been reading here for months. Since before I got my G53SW-NX1.
I got lucky and pick it up open box at Newegg for $580 shipped. :) Upgraded the ram and now added a SSD HDD. See sig..

I'm hoping someone can help me with a small problem I have. I need a copy of the AI recovery restore disks.
Long story short, I did do the AI recovery when I 1st got the system. Turns out my disks are bad.
Didn't really know this till I got my new SSD HDD and went to restore. I have now replaced the DVD burner as well.
I found that it was bad sometime after getting the laptop when trying to burn some disk. Didn't dawn on me that my recovery disk might be bad till I tried using them for the new SSD.

Anyways I really would appreciate if someone could burn me a known working copy of the AI restore. I'm willing to pay for the dvd's and shipping.
I'm located in the USA, Mississippi, so local US would be best for shipping and match for this system.
I'm sure one day I will sell or pass on this laptop and at that time I'd like to have these.
But most important to me is I would like to restore the hidden recovery portion to my old and new hard drives.
Turns out the bad copy messed up my old hard drive I'm guessing with the format & re-portioning. So all was lost.

Edit: not sure my sig is showing up so here are my stats:

    ASUS G Series G53SW-XN1 Notebook
    Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz)
    10GB Memory
    OCZ Agility 240GB
    500GB HDD 7200rpm
    DVD Super Multi
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M

Alternatively, you could do a clean install of windows 7 and grab the drivers and utilities from Asus' support site. By the way, if you didn't completely wipe the original drive, you still have the recovery partition there.

You can grab the iso from windows 7 HP here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html. Use the key on the bottom of your laptop to activate it or ABR Beta to backup the activation.

    Tijo,

Do the DR downloads contain SP1 for W7? I searched but did not get any hits.

Has anyone had any issues with their graphic drivers crashing? Running 285.62 now and on occasion my graphics drivers will crash and recover. But then my background will be pixelated in places, and my windows won't show right, like the "close" button will only show a black box. I also had at one point where it crashed so bad that everywhere my mouse went a black box formed on my screen. The drivers crashed again and things where right. It only happens when I'm running Chrome, Firefox, even IE. Or when I open a window (my computer or such.) If I disable Aero, and use the Classic theme it seems to go away. I have re-installed w7 with full re-install of drivers and so far it's not happened again, after about 8 hours of use. Was doing this for the past 2 days on random or not so random since it happened with windows and such. Games didn't seem affected, but I haven't done much gaming since it happened. Has anyone had these issues as well?

Guess you didn't read my post closely?

This is why I was asking for help as I want to put the computer back to shipped state.
Turns out after all the hard work the new OCZ SSD died today. So I now need the AI recovery disk even more.
I've already applied for RMA & sent in the SSD late today.

I'm also wondering if everyone else had to use 5 DVD's to make this AI recovery set?
I have a couple other Asus laptops and it never took 5 DVD's to do the AI recovery set. U50F and a UL50AG,
neither of those AI recovery will work as I have tried those as well as the one for the G53SW about 8 times and it has failed with the same error 1029 each time.

Note it takes over a hour to do this restore/recovery I already have over 12 hours with everything I have tried this far.
Even more hours setting each HDD up with a new install of the OS, but I want it back to shipped state on the HDD with hidden recovery partition.
I was hoping someone wouldn't mind burning & shipping the disk to help me out? As said I'll pay for shipping & cost of the DVD's with in reason.

Actually I had some of the same problems with that driver version. I have used both of the latest beta drivers, one just released today and both have worked better all around.

    NVIDIA DRIVERS 290.53 BETA

All my games look better & run smoother.

Ok, I just redid my laptop thinking it was an OS issue. It was so bad I really couldn't see what I was doing so yeah. :( I'll run the Beta driver install. Usually I am cautious of beta stuff, specially drivers, but from what I have been reading, Nvidia's Beta drivers aren't all that bad and as close to pre-release as you will ever get. So I'll give them my trust...for now. lol. Here goes the download.

Good luck with the install, be sure to click clean install from below the option list.
Hopefully its just a driver problem and not the video card going bad.
I do folding@home with most of my computers, but after getting the scare of artifacts I quit folding on this laptops video card.
Let us know how its working out?

Edit: Bump for those AI recovery disk. Not sure but maybe they could be put into a iso/img file/files and hosted some were for download?
I sure would like to have these. I hope someone will help me out. Will be much appreciated.

So far so good on my card, it sits at 42-46C Idle, in a ambient temperature of 22C. Not too bad I'd have to say, and hits a max of about 76-80C under load. I never thought it would but using an HD texture pack (x256) on minecraft can really tax a gpu. My gpu seems to get hottest while playing minecraft. (I have everything set to max and still get anywhere from 30- over 240fps, it bounces around ALOT!) My other games don't seem to tax the 460 as much or so it seems. Of course I play minecraft for hours and hours on end.

Chastity had the iso on her driver page at asusrog, but some of the links are broken so it might be as well. Other than that i do not know if someone has an iso they could send to you, i certainly don't have the one for the G53.

I suggesting grabbing the iso of windows 7 as an alternative, you can get pretty close to the factory install by grabbing the drivers and utilities from Asus. Install everything and make an image of the install. It is better than nothing.

Thanks for the reply. Have a link to where your talking about?
I have a backup image just not with the hidden partition, also W7 install disk drivers and such.
I just want to also have the original AI recovery disk on hand. To me its much easier to use quicker even if I have to remover some of the bloatware after install.

So I'd still very much like to get a good working copy for my backup.

Edit: BTW does anyone else have this in device manager: unknown device. Picture to follow.

anyone found a way to fix this?

I do not have this problem, but it could be something like the webcam or another device that is usually connected through usb internally.

I just checked the link on Chastity's page and they are broken. She works for Asus now though, so they might have asked her to take them down. It is possible to buy the recovery disc directly from Asus, but is is not cheap.

Those temps aren't really bad but from reading looks like you have had your G53SW for a while, might be time for some compressed air cleaning.

    @tijo

The USB unknown doesn't seem to be hurting anything, everything is working "web cam included" just bothers me its there. lol

wouldn't have the recovery partition or recovery disc images in any case. a small legal issue with the dvd playback software bundled in.

all chastities ftp site had were links to all the appropriate drivers and software from asus and elsewhere. you could have found the ai recovery software, but without the partition it just fails to do anything.

what you are asking for and i think would be nice would be a copy of the burned recovery discs, all five of them, in order to restore that recovery partition and the bloatware windows install.

my mother got one of these just after i did( hers doesn't have mines problems luckily) and she enjoys the cheap funky flash/point and click games from the factory install as well, which do not appear to be downloadable independently from asus either. (haven't looked at them closely, just know they're there on a factory install, and clean windows + driver disc doesn't have em).

not sure from the amount if information in that picture. guessing webcam or card reader.

46C gpu idle/videoplayback isn't dirty or high temp for this machine, its dead average for idle temp. this is the 53sw not the 73 or sx.

Yes this is exactly what I'm looking for. Turns out my DVD burner was bad "got this G53SW as a OB @ Newegg" so this maybe way it was returned, so my burn of the 5 recovery disk was also bad.

re-installed both those, but didn't fix the problem. I do use a external mouse "Logitech" so I guess it could be it, but works well. Haven't tried any different drivers for it since it does work well.
Just the OS installed drivers used.

Yes also about what mine runs, were I live computers seem to be a dust magnet so I have to clean them about every two months. Was just my reason for saying that, not that there over any limits.

Amazon no longer carries the power plug piece YL53 90-degree Right Angle converter.

Mine is busted. The plug has a lot of wiggle room, and as you use it that wiggle room gets wider and wider. Now, if it isn't laying properly, I don;t get power connection.

Anyone know of any other place to buy the adapter?

I have had my laptop for awhile, almost a year now, longest I have every really owned a gamer laptop. Usually go through them because either they don't have the power or they just die on me. So I do pride myself in this fact of owning for so long. I do take care of my computers, but ran out of compressed air and haven't had the time to buy more, after Christmas I will, I think it's time for a Winter cleaning anyhow. lol. Just to get any dust build up.

Ya me to, I have 3 water cooler systems with open rads, one has 3x120m fans so it pulls a lot of air + dust. Its time for those to be cleaned.
They run under full load 24/7, with water they don't really get all that warm 40/50c range, but you can see a few C difference in temps when there breathing well.

Not sure with crysis2, but I was playing Rage today and happened to notice the temps as I left the game 67c on all CPU cores, 71c on the video card.
Played for over a hour. Fan speed was 3800 RPM I think, not real sure on that one?

Sorry if this has been adressed before, thread search tool didn't help me:

Did anyone manage to stick 16gb of ram in the G53SW? I'm getting errors in memtest with 3x4gb sticks depending on which slots I use (can't put two in the double-slot), yet the sticks are good (tested them individually)... as if there was not enough voltage. I can't find a way to pump more juice to them via BIOS... any suggestion?

Not that I really NEED 16gb... but twas cheap, and wanna try a ramdisk.

Did you remove the original 4GB stick in slot 0(if you have a XN1) or the original two 4GB on the other versions? If you're putting in new sticks in with the original RAM you're probably running different CAS timing or speed. For example, if you had two sticks that originally came with your laptop and you put two more in the other slots, the computer will try to run in dual channel mode. So if you are then able to put in only one at a time, so three sticks, it will then run in single channel mode which is fairly forgiving for different memory timing or speeds.

The original 4GB that comes with the laptop is a Hynix DDR3 10600 with CAS 9.

I recently just bumped my G53SW-XN1 to 16GB of RAM since it was less than $30. I'm running G.Skill DDR3 10666 RAM on all four slots.

Seems we got the same deal ;)

Thanx for quick answer, got myself three G.Skill 10666 (same as 10600 or 10700, doesn't matter, roundup) which are like the Hynix 9-9-9-24, figuring I'd keep the hynix one when ordering.

Using 2 G.Skill and the factory 4gb right now (3x4gb sticks):

Actually I managed to have a working configuration with 2 G.Skill and the factory one in the machine, slots #1 and #4 G.Skill , #3 Hyundai Electronics.

If I switch the -under keyboard- ram to the back slot, meaning both back slots would be used, with the same three sticks I get about 32 errors in 12 hours of memtest.

With this config, keeping one of the dual-slot free, zero errors in 24 hours.

Funny thing is when I was testing with the 2gb factory + 4gb factory + 1 g.skill stick all in the back, no errors, as if the errors were caused by having 2more gb pumping juice :/

I'm not sure if I read you about the single channel example. You mean If I use 3 sticks I'm running in single channel? and 4 double channel?

I'll have to try getting the 3rd G.Skill in it, I guess :/

The 4GB and 2GB that comes with the laptop have the same timing and speed, 10600. Therefore they can still run in dual channel, the size doesn't matter for that to work. The G.Skill is 10666 so it throws off the speed but not necessarily the timing when you stick it in the corresponding slot(slot 3). So you can technically configure it with:

-slot 0 and slot 3 with the original memory and slot 2 and slot 4 with the G.Skill

    or

-slot 0 with the original stick, slot 3 empty, and slot 2 and slot 4 with the G.Skill.

How this works is, the G53SW is a dual channel memory configuration, so they run in pairs for you to get dual channel mode. So if you put odd number of RAM in the computer, it no longer run in dual channel but in single channel. There is a slight speed difference but nothing that anyone will really notice and it's barely quantifiable in speed tests.

Unlike the 1366 socket i7 for example is a triple channel configuration so it runs in three's to get the optimal performance. There is a quantifiable speed difference in speed test but not in real world applications. The new 2011 socket is quad channel so it runs in fours to get the optimal performance but it remains to be seen if there is any really break through speed difference between the different channel configurations, however at the very least the new configuration is specified by Intel to have symmetrical memory channels so the RAM is intentionally split to both sides of the CPU.

G.Skill does sell a 10600 type on Newegg as well and that's the one that was on sale a few days ago versus the G.Skill 8GB 10666(2X4GB) was on sale a week with a free 4GB memory card which is what I got for $30. I had previously bought the 8GB (2X4GB) from newegg when it was $35 two months ago so it was a direct add in to what I already had. I did the difficult work already to remove the slot 0 memory so putting these two additional sticks was easy when I was installing my SSD. It's interesting to see a 7.8 WEI rating on a SATA2 drive, now my hard drive is the fastest rated thing on my laptop.

The more you know! Informative, thank you.

    I'll quote TomsHardware on this:
"The problem comes with "rounding" and was first noticed with DDR-266 (PC-2100). The data rate of 266 MHz is actually 266.6 (continuously repeating decimal) megahertz, so the true transfer rate was 2133 MHz.

Today's DDR3-1333 has a peak bandwidth of 10666 MHz, which can be improperly rounded down and called PC3-10600, rounded up to be called PC3-10700 or stated without rounding as PC3-10666 depending on the manufacturer's desires."
DDR3-1333 Speed and Latency Shootout : The New Mainstream Standard?

So if my speed is the same, and my timings are the same... shouldn't they play nicely together... :/

Thus me thinking I have A) bad memory slot (which would be bizarre as I tested it in different configs and it worked well) or B) voltage is too low and BIOS won't help.

The ram is G.Skill F3-10666CL9S-4GBSQ PC3-10666, shellshocker on NE :)

So the speed is off then. The original memory is 10600 and the G.Skill although labeled as 10666 is actually rounded to 10700 in speed tests and on it's hardware ID on my computer. Voltages aside as all the memory brought up is only 1.5 volts.

    As Toms Hardware states, 10666, 10600, 10700 = same thing = same speed = 666.666666666 mhz.

    10666.66666/16= 666.6666

I'll drop the 3rd G.Skill in a few and memtest again (pretty sure I'll be getting errors :/ )

    Thanxs for the help

EDIT: btw cpu-z show the three (2G.Skill and 1factory) at 10700, confirming they run at same speed.

True in most cases, but not in this. G.Skill intentionally created two different models. The one you want is: F3-10600CL9S-4GBSQ

The one you have, F3-10666CL9S-4GBSQ, is not going to match.

Funny thing is, this is one of the biggest problems with people that have older model Mac's that only take 10600 or lower RAM, most of the negative comments on newegg for the 10666 is from that issue.

I also googled what you had quoted from Tom's Hardware, it's not stated from Tom's Hardware and its technically no different then what you get here or anywhere else that does forum postings as the quote was from someone like the rest of us that puts things on a forum to help others. Just because it is from Tom's Hardware domain it is still left for interpretation since it was in response to another person's issue on the forum and not from one of their official postings. So just like my postings and others, it may not be 100% accurate as it's impossible for someone to know everything and there's many perspectives so take it as you may.

Let's agree they're off speed (EDIT: please see EDIT below): would it be the cause of the memtest errors, i.e. when pairing G.skill 10666 with factory 10600 the motherboard gets them to dual channel and that would cause errors? Wouldn't it simply automatically overclock or underclock one of them?

As for the quote, it's from tom's hardware itself (official review)
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ddr3-1333-speed-latency-shootout,1754.html
    7th paragraph.

EDIT: found another opinion on the subject, located here (seems to concur with Tom's Hardware):
    TailGunner's post

Well, have been testing this for a while and I do think I have a bad stick that gives error depending on the configurations. I removed the hidden factory stick and tried the three GSkills together, switching slots, trying to isolate the problem by running two only... all sticks behave normally when dual paired but I get errors while I put the three inside. For now I just dumped back the original stick with 2 gskills and tested and no errors (tested 24+ hours). I guess I'll leave it to 12 Gb, not that I need 16. Nor 12 :p

Yes, it would cause errors as the speed would be off when trying to sync the two sticks in dual channel.

As far as overclocking and underclocking the memory, the memory controller on our laptop doesn't really have that ability nor would it do it automatically in other models. Computers are not selfware(for the time being) so they can't make judgement calls on timing or speed, its whatever has been preset. The real issue you have is with the quality of the chip. Corsair and other manufactures have tiered products because of the tolerance of the chips that come out. When you see a manufacturer purposely release two different models like this, it usually means that the 10666 is technically running faster because it's closer to the tolerance than the 10600 model. That's why when you buy memory, it's recommended to buy all of what you need at that time in hopes that your batch is from relatively the same batch to reduce errors.

I guess I was lucky with my memory config. I had 2x2GB of Nanya laying around from a pull upgrade that has worked well with the original 2Gb/4GB chips that came in my G53SW-NX1.

    [IMG] [IMG]

    Zero problems or errors.

Edit: I would like to upgrade to 16GB, maybe I can pick up a few of some other peoples original 4GB pulls at a cheap price. :)

You're fine since you have them in pairs, he's trying to mix two different RAM sticks on the same channel bank.

Ya I tested with the laptop still open to make sure they were using the same banks "seeing all chips & dual channel" with a few memory test, before closing.

After seeing other's issues with ram, I though that maybe my issues I've been having (and just dealing with, such as USB port startup delay and random graphic glitches (less so)) were due to timing issues. After looking at my ram I don't think it's the case but tell me if you think so. I will be running memtest tonight to see what happens. Ram in all slots are corsair other then the one hyundai (I think is how you spell it). Which is why I only show the 2 slots in my screen cap.

Mixing memory chips on the one channel maybe cause some issues. A memory test should show any.
