I need to check what panel I ended up with. Considering the amount of light bleeding through, it's probably the Hann-Star. I wouldn't mind finding the AUO17ED for it, that's the one to have.

Yeah, given that the A1 has the AUO15ED, and that's the same one that I have, I think it's safe to assume that all the G53SWs have that display panel. Except maybe the best buy one which probably has somethig even worse.

It still looks real sharp to me, but I've never had a 1080p laptop screen or anything even close, so I'm not spoiled or anything yet.

    I don't have a G53, but Kaspersky is quite nice for anti-virus.

Also, the price of the G53sw on newegg is crazy!! I really wish I needed a new laptop right now because this is definitely the one I'd pick.

    Hey Kaworu,

just a tip about your keyboard flex, it definitely hasn't bothered me but if you want to reduce yours -- flip up the keyboard and use the double sided sticky pads.

It's super easy to pop off the keyboard, just use a pry tool in the 5 coin sized slots at the top of the keyboard, it'll pop right up. Don't pull the keyboard out completely since the ribbon is attached, just pull it up slowly and you'll see the ribbon, there's stickies under there, if you peel it and put the keyboard back down that should reduce the flex but it'll make the system a little more annoying to open down the road if you want to make upgrades.

Hey TailGunner, I know you said the caddy was included with the XN1, were the screws also taped in like the image posted of the A1?

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not saying the AUO screen in the G53 is bad; quite the contrary actually. The screen has good contrast, black level but the viewing angle is somewhat limited. Let me check on something though, I have a suspicion that my 8540w has the same AUO screen, but a different variant.

On the sidenote, if you have free time, check out the screens on the current Sony VAIO Z. That's the benchmark right there.

    Hey Guys,

Not sure if this is the right place to post but I am an industrial designer looking to buy either the G53SW or the G73SW very shortly. I am getting one of these systems because they are pretty neat, but mainly for the CPU & Graphics Performance which I need and of course the price!

I do a lot of graphics based work (photoshp etc) however, and the screen is very important. I was leaning towards the G73SW because from what I have seen the screen looks to be better however I have seen that people on here are mentioning the G53SW-A1 has the better AUO15ED screen available.

I have also been looking at the Gentech website and seen there is a matte version of the screen (which is better for my needs) available for a small price increase! With 95% NTSC gamut it sounds like a good screen and might be what I need. Has anyone got any experience with the quality of this screen? Or can GenTechPC offer any suggestions?

I need to be pretty mobile so the 15" size would be handy, but I don't want to sacrifice on screen quality at all.

Any advice would be a massive help as I am based in Hong Kong and there isn't much available over here and these are surprisingly overpriced here too so I will be buying one from the US. Thanks in advance!!

The screen they offer is the B156HW01 v.4, which is better than the v.5 found in the G53SW. Because it's a matte screen and has a higher gamut rating, it's definitely worth it if you don't mind the extra $180-$200 they charge for it.

It might be becuz I am to new for windows/Asus....

I am having trouble with a couple of keys on my Asus G53sw
the "Turbo/Express Key"(next to the light key/top 3 buttons on the key board)
is not working, and the "Splendid Key" which allows you to switch between different display colors isn't working as well. It was working perfectly fine i don't remember what button i pressed that caused this...? Also my "Fn" key only works for a couple functions. for example my F3 and F4(for brightness) arn't working and the F11 and F12(volume) aren't working as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am sure I accidently toggled a setting to cause this... Other than that, this laptop is a Beast... Thanks.

You should try going back to any settings you've changed and playa round with them to se if that fixes it. Also, you could try reinstalling the drivers and see if that fixes it, which probably will. Wish I could help you more, maybe someone that actually owns this computer could be more useful

Yeah, those two keys stopped working for me as well, and I just reinstalled the relevant drivers, restarted windows, and had no more issues with that.

Not sure why your function keys aren't working properly, but I would recommend doing the same sort of thing - reinstall drivers. You could also look through your manual. You should have a pdf of it on your machine.

Thanks TailGunner! Definitely looking at going down this path after I check out some more reviews on that screen.

Would the same go for the 17.3" 90% gamut version of the screen? Is it just the AUO 17" model of the screen? With similar performance to the 15" screen? Anyone with personal experience with either of these configurations? Looking to order one very soon and I really appreciate any advice. Thanks again!

The screen is more colorful and it's anti-glare, we have youtube video of the screen:

    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/z75N08sgEcg?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/z75N08sgEcg?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width='560' height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Looks like you need to re-install the ATK drivers, just click e-Driver icon on the desktop and select ATK Pakage and click start.

ken, I want on the e-Driver and there was no ATK package, before this I went to the Asus support website and i downloaded the atk package; after restart, 3 error messages popped up at the same time: first one was:
"ATK0100 request" and it said "You have to install ATK0100 driver" n then OK.
    next error message:
"P4G" said "This program can only be executed on the Asus Computer." then OK
    next error message:
"Error" said "Can't Open ACPI ATK0100 kernel Mode Driver"... n then another ok.

I am clueless on to what to do next, and everytime i turn on or restart the laptop these messages pop up.

Next thing is the gadget that toggles from gaming to entertaiment, to office quite is not woring neither, please help. thanks.

Welp, I got a blue-screen today. Not too promising, or nice, but it doesn't seem to be causing any lingering issues. Was very strange. I had just closed the lid of my laptop to go get some coffee with friends this afternoon, and when I got home and opened it up, there was the bluescreen. Unless my cat knows my password and was using my laptop while I was out, nothing else was going on.

A hard restart and everything is fine, but it's still rather worrying. I may have said that I'm rather unfamiliar with Windows 7 - I'm coming off a seven-year stint of using nothing but OSX at the moment. So I'm really not sure what this portends, if anything.

This is some of the information that was logged, no real clue what it means:

    BCCode: 9f
    BCP1: 0000000000000003
    BCP2: FFFFFA8005F9B060
    BCP3: FFFFF80000B9C4D8
    BCP4: FFFFFA800A46A770

Anything to worry about, or just some random error?

    Hi,
this is error is a failure to go in sleep mode, I think it could happen sometimes when you bring down the screen that it doesn't response probably that it doesn't be able in putting the laptop in sleep mode.

I would suggest to do nothing about it unless it happens again then come back and post here and I will give you couple things that will probably fix it but I wouldn't make a big deal of one time occurrence

just ordered my g53sw from newegg as well, very excited also got myself an intel SSD 160GB to through it in there...really can't wait :D

Hay there, one of the lucky fews that got one of the 89 from .ca on the 27th :)

The lappy is in the mail! I'm now checking into SSDs and really, can't seem to find if SATA II / III is part of the equation in a laptop... I mean, if I buy a SATA III SSD, will it work at full potential in the G53SW?

Hi, I have been looking through this thread because im thinking of getting a G53SW but I just had one question, Tailgunner had said that the power supply gets "alarmingly hot". Have you, or anyone, found a replacement power unit for this laptop?

Anyone know if you can use an HDMI 1.3v cable with this laptop? Or is it only HDMI 1.4 compatible? Also if anyone has any game benchmarks (on a external monitor, or TV), could you please post them (please include the size of your monitor/TV)? Thanks :)

I'm still waiting for my G53SW to arrive. It's supposed to arrive on Wednesday, but there hasn't been any updates to the tracking information since it left California on Saturday morning.

Before I purchased the laptop, I gave both Asus and Service Net a call to ask about warranties. Asus does not offer an extended warranty, so the Newegg G53SW-XN1 comes with the Asus standard warranty of 2 years for malfunctions and 1 year accidental damage I think). There are two Service Net extended warranty options that you can buy through Newegg. The first is either a 1 or 2 year extended malfunction warranty that begins once the manufacturer's warranty has ended. So for $100, you can extend your warranty by 2 years (total of 4 years when you include the Asus warranty). You can also buy a 2 or 3 year Accidental Damage from Handling (ADH) warranty from Service net. This includes a malfunctions warranty that starts after the Asus warranty ends. However, the accidental damage coverage starts from the time of purchase, so the laptop will only be covered from accidental damage for a maximum of 3 years if you buy the 3 year plan from Service Net. The reason why I called to ask about the Service Net warranty is because Newegg's FAQ about the warranty does not mention accidental liquid damage. According to the person with whom I spoke, accidental liquid damage is covered with the ADH warranty. I decided to just purchase the regular 2 year warranty for $100. I'm a pretty careful person, so I'm not worried about accidentally damaging my computer. With the extra 2 years of malfunction protection, I will have coverage for the lifetime of the laptop (I figure I'll be replacing it in 3-4 years anyways).

Anyway, if any of you are looking for warranty information, I hope this helps. I can't wait for my computer to arrive later this week!

Does anyone know whats the default warranty with the G53SW-XN1 model? Newegg has it as 1 year, but asus phone support told me 2 years.

I am confused, can someone who bought this from newegg tell me whats the warranty period?

I believe you have to fill out a small form and mail it in to Asus to get the full 2 years,... but you might want to double check on that.

In my case, after I got mine, I went to asus WWW. to register my G53sw, in that web page, on the left side bar, you will see that asus offer the extension warrantee pakage, international one.

I got my computer earlier today! I have been spending my day uninstalling bloatware and configuring and installing programs to my liking. I made a set of restore disks right after I booted the laptop for the first time, but I was wondering if I use AI Recovery Burner (the software that comes with the laptop) to burn another set of recovery disks, will this set include all of the programs I have installed? Ideally, I'd like to set up a recovery set that will include some games and other software, so I won't have to reinstall everything should something happen to my computer. Also, was everyone's G53SW configured to have 2 hard drive partitions? On my computer, the C partition is 116 GB, while the D partition is 327 GB. I wasn't expecting that, but it doesn't cause any problems for me.

First of all, Is your username in honor to Guns N' Roses? They're like my favorite band of all time :) Anyway to answer your question: Asus normally configures laptops with two partitions, so yeah, it is normal ;)

Just found out the sound of G53sw not really that bad, if u like more bass for the headphone when u plug it in, turn on the THX Trustudio, change to the one u like, or can turn it off if u want. i picked external speaker, the build-in one is the worst one

Btw if i burn the set of recovery disk now, will i have the programs in that set, or its just gonna have the default setting.

Sorry to disappoint, but no, my name is not in honor of Guns N' Roses. The name was actually generated using the "Get Name" button in Everquest, and I just sort of kept it. They are a great band though! And thanks for the info!

On my old laptop, if you pressed both touchpad buttons at the same time, it registered as a middle-click. Can this be set up on the touchpad in the G53SW? I haven't found an option for it yet. Also, can you set up the touchpad be disabled if an external mouse is plugged in? My other laptop can also do that. I know you can disable the touchpad using Fn F9, but I'd like it to be automatic when a mouse is plugged in.

    Cong :)
I am not sure about the back up things with AI Recovery Burner, if it is limit to only 4 disk of DVDs then it cannot include all you install in the computer. If you would like to backup all in drive C: and program then it is better to use the other commercial software.

I think that cleaned installation and chose the bloatware you want is better. (just my thought which is already post in this web-board., which cleans registry and the fraction of HDD)

    Hey,

I was thinking about purchasing this notebook and I had some questions for you guys.

Does this notebook support dual HDD? What % performance increase should I expect in gaming over the 8800m GTX that my old Sager has? What do you guys feel about the build quality (I assume it's better than the MSI alternative)? Are any one of you having the temperature problems that were common in previous Asus Gaming notebooks?

Thanks for all your help. :D

Quick question (not sure if it was answered, and sorry if it has been), but the hard drive that the G53sw-xn1 comes with, is it a hybrid drive or just a normal hard drive?
