do you have any bluetooth device attached to the laptop? For the USB problems I can only think of reinstalling the drivers. The Samsung SSD you should try lurking on their forum (if there is one). Worst of all RMA it :(

how is the Asus G53SW compared to the MSI GT683.The MSI comes with a better GPU(Nvidia 560m),but i'm interested in quality and temperatures.

Better gpu? Beside the different clocks te gpus are the same even performance wise (665mz vs 775mhz).
Their oc range is the same as well (150~MHz). IMHO the only worth thing is that it uses a newer gpu core which runs cooler than the gtx460m.
Anyway I've been reading mixed results with Msi gaming laptops when compared to g53/73sw. The Asus seems to run cooler, with lesser noise and the design is just fantastic.
I'm not saying that the Msi isn't a great machine, but it doesn't have such peculiar "features", it looks/feels like a common laptop although the specs are on par with our Asus's.

the only selling point of MSI gaming laptop line I've seen so far is that they use standard MXM graphic card so you can upgrade it without much hassle. Also the back panel seems to allow you easy access to most components.

    Hi guys,

Only made it to page 45 before my eyes hurt and decided to go ahead and ask for advice.

New member and lovin the site thus far. Just received two of the G53SW-XN1 from new egg (1 for me and one for a friend).

Anyway, I opened one so far and made the recovery disks (5 DVDs), but I cannot use the computer with all the bloatware. There are like 90 process going on before I even open an programs.

I have a Windows 7 Home Prem. 64 Bit disk from my desktop builds that I will use to clean install tonight. I will just hate using it as is.

I have a few questions and favors:

1-Can anyone list the exact drivers that I will need from the recovery disks for full fucntions/ features but no extra software? I know that there is a long thread expaining what's what but it's HUGE.

2-I found some YT vids showing how to change the HDD or add a second one and run it as a mirror?

3-My new G53SW-XN1 has a sticker stating "New Revision Certified Design". Does anyone know what's different about it? Does it come with a bracked for the second HDD since they provided me with 4 HDD screws?

4-Anyone know how to get to the first Ram Dimm? 2,3, and 4 are easy to spot in the videos but cannot find the first. I think I wanna go 12GB of Ram but not sure yet (just want to learn the machine fully).

5-Been looking at the unit for 3 hours while downloading the recovery CDs and testing some features and cannot find the air intake.

6-Couldn't find the THX settings for the speakers yet or how to change the Keyboard back light color (only brightness).

Thanks very much for any and all advice and looking forward to becoming an active member.

No bluetooth, I actually replaced the wifi card with one that came from a desktop. (long story, suffice it to say the wifi card dosn't have bluetooth.) It fixed my wifi issues, but still having usb issues. Tried re-installing usb drivers ,no luck. As much as I hate to do it, I'm going to try a full system install and go from there. (Thinking I may have disabled something by accident) so I'm not going to do much tweaking when done with the restore. Just some basic installs and installs of a few games that I can't live without then go from there. I'll report on my findings once my restore is done. Wish me luck for here I go...

    @Shora:
    1. look at the sticky topic in this forum for asus bloatware and utilities guide.
    2. its not hard to add a second HDD but about the mirrror thing you mean raid? that I sadly have no idea
    3. The first batch of 2nd gen core i7 had some sort of major error that may compromise the system or something but it got fixed and that certified thing is the result.
    4. I believe to access the last one you have to disassemble it to the core and the process is quite time consuming. However if you just need 12GB of RAM the 3 slots is more than enough.
    5. no idea
    6. you could have uninstalled, try to look for it in the driver cd or on asus support website. You cant change your keyboard light but there is a hard mod video on youtube just search asus keyboard light mod or something.

@dragonwolf: hope you will get it sorted out soon :(, also try reset bios settings to factory defaults, wouldnt hurt right?

Will I re-did everything, and at first was having the same USB issues, then after messing around with my USB drivers, I un-installed the Intel one's and viola! It works perfect now. So if your having USB issues un-install the Intel USB drivers and all should be good. I'm happy now!

Take that back, I think it may BE my Razer Oorochi Mouse, everything worked fine until I attempted to use it again. Looks like I'll be doing a complete system restore again and this time I WON't be using my Razer Mouse. Damn thing! Oh, well.

Thanks very much for all the help and advice.

Just to get deeper into it:

    2. Do you think they come with the hdd bracket now? They provide the screws. Would just like to know so that I don't take it apart twice if not needed. Also, yeah, I meant raid but wasnt sure which it was 0 or 1 (or other) so I just said mirror.

    3. So it's just a fixed/ updated i7? Cool enough.

    4. Was hoping to keep them all matching, but a super deep tear down is not worth it for that aspect alone.

    5. Strange huh? We have 1000 posts here and still cant find the intake.

    6. Still haven't uninstalled a single program. When I go to control panel to uninstall programs, I do see a THX file, but cannot find it anywhere else.

Thanks again Dragon for taking the time to help a new guy.

In many cases, that blue screen is a result of a bad memory module. Download memtest @ Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool and run it. It will detect RAM that has gone bad, but be patient, as sometimes a RAM module will run the test fine many times before showing an error, while other times it might show an error in a few minutes. Hope this helps.

@dragonwolf: im so glad you found the source of the problem. About the bluetooth thing i think many people here have wifi problem because they are using some bluetooth device. Even with my new intel card, i once tried to pair with my headset and at the time downloading a steam game with a graph and i could see clearly burst of speed drop while my laptop is searching for the device.

@shora: yes if you bought the xn1 it should come with the bracket already inside, if you already have the screw then yeah im 100% sure it has one. About the air intake you could also look at the g53jw forum or even the g73 as they are somewhat similar (g53jw should be identical). You could always try to install THX over the one already installed. Also look at the taskbar menu the asus utilities one it might be in there.

Yeah I'm going to attempt to un-install my old mouses drivers and re-install first, if that works cool, if not I'm redoing everything. The razor mouse just seems to be the cause for some reason for as soon as I plugged it in, I was plagued by the same issues. My wifi card doesn't have bluetooth as I swapped it for another. (Just got tired of wifi drops and decided to lose bluetooth altogether since I wasn't using it. Had another wifi card sitting, it's a Ralink wireless-n) Personally I think part of the issue may be because both the bluetooth ant and the wifi ant are within very close proximity of each other. So they may cause alot of interference. Uses may differ among us g series users, but I think I'm gonna stick to a usb wireless or wired mouse. Besides if you game, those have better response then a bluetooth. Take the Razor Mamba for instance, wired or wireless it has a very good response. Even my Oorochi is better if using the usb wire then if I use it's bluetooth. It may also be that my laptop and the Oorochi just don't like each other. That's happened before on computers. My G50VT doesn't seem to mind the oorochi so those will go together from now on. You can get a bluetooth mouse for the G53SW if you want, but... don't be surprised if your wifi drops or the mouse isn't as good as you thought. If it works, awesome, if not will at least you tried. Me? I'm going usb all the way now. Will time to try my re-install of my usb mouse and go from there. Wish me luck. I'll report back on my findings later.

Happy to hear that I most likely have the second hdd bracket. Seems like many didn't come with them at first.

Will try both the Asus Utilities or reinstalling THX and report back.

    Thanks again.

It may work fine for you, I really don't know what's going on with mine, I'm just sure it's the mouse I was using, I may be able to get one like the one your looking at and be perfectly fine. (I'm going to wait until I have my new Intel card though before I try anymore.) I'm working on my restore atm. (On the old but reliable G50VT.) Again, give yours a try and go from there. You can always take it back. (it's too late for me to, about 3 months too late.) Hope you have better luck then I have.

Ok, redoing everything didn't fix it! Grr, I'd had it with this. I'm just gonna say screw it and only shut the laptop down when I need to. Specially once college starts, booting windows off the ssd is just as slow as an hdd thanks to whatever is causing the issue. Everything works fine once it's fully started up, it's almost like the usb drivers are on a delay startup, which they aren't but that's what it seems like. I don't know what else to do, Asus is no help, they keep saying to re-install the drivers. Will I do, and re-install windows, I have done that too. It'd help if they maybe released a BIOS update and maybe driver updates, but it seems as they have forgotten about us who have spent money on their laptops. This will be the last Asus I buy, I don't care if I gotta save up more money for a different brand I will. Asus has let me down. Unless someone else has an idea, Asus is no help. I'll run this laptop as long as it takes me to get a new one which may be a year from now, but I will not be sorry to see it go when the time comes.

About a week ago I emailed Asus concerning the AES and Bios updates for the gpu and cpu throttling issues and finally got a response:

    Dear Valued Customer,

Thanks for your contacting ASUS Customer Service.

    Thank you for your suggestions.
I am passing this useful information to our engineer.

If you have any other questions, please contact us promplty.

    Thanks.

    Best Regards,
    Cherry
    ASUS Customer Service Center

Not gonna hope for much, but it's a start and maybe might fix my issues as will. Since I've emailed tech support concerning my usb issues too. Might be why the response email took so long since I was talking to them about possible usb issues and such. All I know is this is what I got today.

Ok, I finally timed it, it takes exactly a minute for any and all my usb devices to work. This only effects usb 2, the usb3 port doesn't seem to be affected. Anyone know what could be causing this? I don' have any programs to delay startup or anything running of that sort, just stock stuff. Any ideas? Thanks

well one thing we know for sure is the usb 3.0 port use separate driver than the usb 2.0 port so yeah, it may or may not got something to do with the driver, some kind of conflict

something isn't right, I know that. It was working fine before. And everyhing works fine once i've waited a minute after bootup. It's just weird, a delay somewhere. I am going to try putting the BIOS to default settings. (I never changed anything) but maybe that will work. I really don't know what else to do. I mean, it all works fine once I've waited. Just weird. If that doesn't work, I'll just put the laptop in standby when I want to shut it down, and restart once a day or when forced to by an update or from installing software. Wish me luck.

just one last thing though for I am still uncertain about that SSD of yours. If you still failed to find the problem, could you try and install windows on the 500GB seagate drive and remove the SSD if need be, see how it goes?

I will try that tomorrow, as I have alot of data on the 500GB to backup, and report once I've done that.

Of note, I replaced my old logitech wireless mouse with a new one (the left button had worn down to clicking less often. Upon first reboot, the usb ports worked at startup like normal, it surprised me. But now after a second reboot (Dang Photoshop) it's back to it's old ways. Makes me think maybe it's a driver issue that's happening. I may try to shut off Legacy USB mode in the Bios. Maybe that will help? Tell me what you think about that idea.

I find this interesting, My BIOS says AHCI is enabled, but Samsung's Magician Software says Non-AHCI. See picture. I tried downloading AHCI drivers from intel but no go. Anyone have a link for AHCI that maybe didn't install for some reason?

I got everything working, other then for some reason it still says No AHCI, when my BIOS says so, something may not be entirely right on the SSD side, but USB is working. I used a Program called Driver Genius and it downloaded 2 Intel drivers, I installed those and now after about 5 shutdown cycles, usb is still working the way it should be. I'm happy now! :D

i think if you disable legacy usb you wont be able to use those usb ports on the laptop but not sure though as I have never tried it. And just read your last post and man congrats!

Yeah I use that software too and I was just about to recommend you to install that program and ask how you install the windows partition, do you just upgrade or did you try delete the partition then create a new one (via the windows installation program)

Thinsgs are working good, according to driver genius the intel drivers needed updating, I do a clean install including deleting the partition and re-doing it for windows 7 install. I know 7 knows wither you are using an SSD or not and knows how to partition. Um, otherwise not much else, a few more restarts and everything is still going well for me! I backed up the newly downloaded drivers to my Windows USB drive. Hopefully I won't have anymore trouble. *crosses fingers* Oh, yeah I didn't do the Legacy USB thing, so everything is at Default on my BIOS.

i just put most of the setup files i often use into a setup folder in the D partition (the 1TB HDD) and leave the SSD as the windows partition. Again, congrats on your laptop running well again :D Have you searched the samsung ssd forum (is there one?) to see anyone with similar problem yet? I think you will get that sorted out in no time.

According to PHIL from the Samsung 470 forum: "This says you're in AHCI: "Controller: iaStor"

That would be using AS SSD, and according to as SSD it does show that, so it must be a bug in the Samsung software or even possibly the F/W (no new updates out, I checked). So all's good if someone was wondering. That and I believe the fact that I don't think Trim or any of those work if your not in AHCI mode, which is in fact why SSD makers say to have your SATA mode in AHCI. Everything else is working wonderfully. So I think I'm done troubleshooting and now just gonna enjoy my lappy and play some games! :D

    hey all,

i've got a g53sw-xa1 (i7-2630qm, upgraded to 16gb ram, gtx 460m, win7 64bit, not overclocked) and it was running slower than i expected it to, so i ran 3dmark06. sure enough i got 9k vs target score 13k according to 3dmark06 (sm2 was 3600 vs 5400 expected, sm3 3300 vs 5500 expected, cpu 4900 vs 4600). my windows experience index comes in at what other people are getting, except graphics and gaming graphics are coming in at 6.5 vs other people's 7.1.

the score was the same with nvidia driver 267.21 and 280.36. is there a known best driver for the 460m? also, when i go to nvidia's website the system scan doesn't work (ie, i have to manually choose my graphics card), and then when i download and run the installer, it says "the graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware"... so i have to use a modded inf from laptopvideo2go. then it installs fine. weird. also i just had the thought that maybe i should remove the old drivers in some rigorous way rather than just installing new ones? does this matter?

i was running in high performance mode and plugged in to AC, is there anything else i need to do?

i don't know a lot about this stuff, if more info is needed i will gladly provide.

    thanks.

    There are two possible explanations:

    - your CPU is throttling, or your gpu doesn't stick to 3d clocks.
If the problem is your CPU, you can easily fix it by downloading ThrottleStop by our almighty UncleWebb. You can find it on TechInferno. Download it, launch it and keep it open, there's nothing else you have to do. Then run 3dmark06 and see what score you get.
If it's your gpu the problem, download Msi Afterburner and install it. Under settings configure these options: Core Clock,Shader Clock,Memory Clock and Temp to show in OSD. Now when benchmarking keep an eye on the OSD and see if temp goes over 92c and if clocks downclock to 203mhz (core) instead of staying to 675mhz.

    - second hypothesis could be that your gpu is defective. If thats the case and I hope not you'll need to RMA the laptop to Asus.

Ps: I'm a victim of CPU throttling as well and I need to launch TS at least once everytime I cold boot.
Not a problem anyway, create a shortcut to the exe and put it I to windows startup items folder under start>all programs.
You may want to edit the .ini file of TS and add the line ExitTime=5 to make the program auto exit after 5 seconds. TS needs to be launched once to be effective so you can even close it.
    Hope it helps.

    Question about RAM...

Does anyone know upto how much total RAM will be configured as dual-channel? 8gb? 10gb? or even 16gb total???

for what I know of, the unmatched-size default pair (1x4gb and 1x2gb) is configured as dual-channel. The slot under the keyboard and one behind the laptop are empty...I have the newegg version g53sw-xn1

And a little note on my experience with this lappy...so far it's been about 2 weeks. Everything works fine and dandy. Love it!

Don't bother with ram, just put 8gb (2*4gb) max, if you have the utility of it. That's ideal. More is totally useless. Judging by tests even 6 is useless for now, in 2009 there was no difference between 3, 6 or 12gb.

well i dont wanna waste my already-installed 6gb of ram by just switching them out with 8gb (if i were to buy 2x4gb), so i just wanna know upto how much gb will be configured as dual-channel...

8gb with an intel 2630qm as far as i know. More will be in single channel.
But you know dual channel isn't that much of an improvement? You won't see the difference. x)

    Hi all..

A few weeks ago I bought the G53sw, great machine, however I got a problem, or more like a question..

So as we all know the g53sw does not ship with a W7 CD, that makes me wonder... Is it possible to use the g53sw W7 product key to install and activate a fresh windows mirror using an OEM W7 disc, assigned to another computer?

And if I should up in any way, does it affect my warrenty?

    Yes you can!
It does not affect your warranty, and you'll have the benefit of a clean, bloatware-free system.
Just make sure you use a windows seven 64 bit premium copy.
You may have to call the windows server to activate manually your key, but that's free.

Thanks. I will try ThrotteStop when I get home tonight. If I overclock my GPU though, won't that void my warranty? If it will, then it seems like I need to admit defeat and mail it in if ThrottleStop doesn't work :-/

Swiss Gear makes high quality stuff, but the mobile edge back feels just as high quality, for cheaper.

Overclock is done by software, and since you can't touch voltages you can't really harm your gpu at all.
It gives a free boost in performance with just a small amount of heat.

Anyway run TS and check how it does, since most i7 2630qm users are subjected to throttling, me included.

I thought I'd do a report on my issues since last time. As most of you know I was having USB issues, not working upon startup and taking about a minute to work after boot. After finding out that there WAS some driver updates, I installed those and that fixed the problem. Been running problem free ever since. Asus doesn't update their drivers and that can really hurt them on potential buyers. Keep this in mind when buying from them. I will probably buy from them again, but I will be keeping my Driver Genius program close at hand. Anyhow, all's well now.

Hey guys, just became a member of the G53SW owners club, mine should ship out tomorrow, anything I should do immediately once I get it? Besides installing W7 on my SSD?

Is there a list somewhere of what Asus software is important/what's not important? And it seems like only a few of them have the throttling issue, is there a common cause for this?

Im a recent g53 owner too so im not sure of whats good and not. From what i see most of it is useless but grab the opinion of everyone else first.

For throttling: ATTENTION: G73/53SW Owners - CPU Throttling to 798mhz and how to fix it

Throttlestop will fix this with no downside

for now im more than satisfied with my G53SW, however as for future machines, unless ASUS makes it easier to access and upgrade the GPU, I'd have to opt for MSI or Sager with the GTX 570M and standard MXM3.0b slot :(
