I have the 4K screen. Yeah it makes no sense to me for them to have what seems like the exact same AC adapter with different tip sizes

The motherboard may be slightly different but having a different connector would just increase costs of making the chassis and in part costs (ordering many different parts is more expensive than many of a few types).

I've found the adapters are interchangeable between UX51VZ and G501. For charging and non gaming use, the UX51VZ adapter may work Just keep in mind it's only able to output 90w vs. the 120w of the G501 adapter.

Yes any brick of the same voltage, polarity and connector type will work, just as you say with less amps you should avoid loading the GPU (Which is always the biggest hog).

Hi, I got my G501JW 2 weeks ago and have already encountered the much documented screen flicker on the 4k panel. Mine occurs after resuming from sleep. I upgraded to Win 10 in the first few days. I have updated the nvidia drivers with no success. Has anyone come across a solution?

I contacted Asus and they just recommended a factory restore to see if that fixes anything.

What happens if you change the resolution temporarily?

Make sure you flash the latest BIOS. 209 should have fixed the flickering issue.

Hi, I've been experiencing some problem when using my G501JW for gaming.

If I use the laptop for a slightly longer gaming session, there would be a considerable framerate drop. I expect this is tied to the throttling which happened if the CPU/GPU reached a certain temperature?

Does anyone know any workaround for this problem?

    1. Lower the in game graphics settings, so the GPU doesn't stress as much.
    2. Buy a laptop cooler/cooling pad.

Also make sure your power settings are set to maximum performance. On some laptops, you may also be able to adjust the fan settings through the power profile, although I have not looked to see if this is possible with the G501.

Elevate the back of the notebook a little and ensure it has space to breathe.

Does anyone have a problem with the laptop going into sleep mode while in use? And also many times when I put the laptop to sleep it wakes up a few minutes later and is running. Sometimes I close it and put it in my backpack only to feel it warming up and taking it out to find it awake and running.

Is the laptop going into sleep while plugged in? Have you checked the power profiles to make sure the settings are correct?

I've had my G501 for a few months and have not encountered these issues.

Make sure you fiddle with your power options on what exactly will wake the machine up.

Any thoughts on Best Buy's version of the G501?

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-ro...lack/4415800.p?id=1219745389138&skuId=4415800

Seems like a fair deal.. but the choice of i7-4750HQ is dumbfounding.. Why put a lower performing i7 cpu (lower clocks) despite the Iris Pro (which you'll never take advantage of)? What is Asus thinking here? I'm just hoping the spec documentation is way off kilter though.

Edit: A 4-cell battery?!? Is this real life? Is this the reject G501 or what, holy cow.

The Best Buy Asus models have often had different specs in the past.

There are reasons for choosing the iris pro (better IPC per watt/Better battery gaming on the IGP).

I have the G501jw and i quite like mine. It doesn't feel as solid as my old Lenovo Y50, but it's lighter, cooler, has a better screen, and the 960m overclocks like a demon (I'm doing +800mhz on the ram!). Note that lifting the back doesn't help cooling, as it seems to intake through the keyboard. My only issue is the soldered on ram when there's more than enough room for two memory slots. Asus says I can put in a 16gb SODIMM for a total of 20gb ram though.

Edit: I have the model sold through Best Buy.

How did you overclock the ram +800mhz of the 960m? I tried with Afterburner and Nvidia Inspector, but it seems not to like it, and locks up eventually. What BIOS are you using?

Everything was bone stock. I was overclocking using the MSI Afterburner control app from my phone while in-game (through the Afterburner server). I could go higher, went to +900mhz, but it would artifact.

I returned the machine because it was having battery issues - After transporting the laptop, I would have to open it up and disconnect and reconnect the battery cable or it would simply not power on off the AC adapter. I have since purchased an Asus G751JT. Completely different size and weight class, but massively improved performance and build quality, IMO.

So I just purchased a G501JW and apparently it is capable of 4K. How do I access this resolution? I don't want to actually use it, I would like to use it at 2K, but it appears to be limited to 1920x1080. How do I access 2560x1440??

How do I get 16GB RAM on the notebook? Mine came with 8GB... the crappy thing!

    Thanks!

Paul, you can`t install more than 12 gb. 4gb on motherboard + one slot for ram (4 or 8gb). You can not install 16gb ram module because core i 4 gen not support this modules.

Hey guys, just got this laptop the other day at a great discount. Unfortunately I already had to return it. About a week in, I started having alot of visual artifacts and blue screens whenever the nvidia graphics were activated. Tried different drivers to no avail. My question is, I'm a little bit confused as to why I only started getting the problems about a week after getting it (a good 10-15hrs of gaming). Is it possible I just got a dud that didn't reveal itself for a little bit, or did I'd push it too far. All I really played was world of warships and Europa universalis, and I monitored the Temps closely as I do with all new laptops. I never got above 79* for gpu with avg around 70* while in game, and never above 85* cpu with average also around 70* in game. Tbh that actually seems pretty low, does everyone else game at these temperatures without problem? Was it most likely a dud and I could safely go for a replacement. Or was what I was playing too much for this computer to handle?
