Update: looks like the new ram did fix the battery issue, however not the game mode crashing issue.
Both 3dmark06 and 3dmark05 crash out on me, and even earlier than the old ram did. I am not sure if its ram related for sure, I think so tho.
Since im on the 702 bios, I think I may go back to 504 and see if that fixes it later tonight after I do more testing.
Aslo I only have 1gb of ram... maybe its just not enough to handle vista x64 and 3dmark?? lol -
can toy tell us about the sizes of the notebook? i really want to know if it fits my 15.4" notebook backpack!
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
seems standard size to me, you just have to account for the fact it has the extra fans on the back so its got more depth. It comes with a bag tho.

ok i have a question:
whenever i run anything - with cpuz in the background it only shows (in game mode)
1757mhz rather than 2930mhz and 6x mutiplier over 10x
the only time i have gotten it to change to and 10x mutiplier is when windows runs the vista assessment. why doesn't it always show at 2.93ghz? its plugged in, in game mode (e6700): in normal mode it shows: 1600mhz.
in both superpi and wprime - cpuz is only showing the reduced speeds, and not full 2.93ghz or 2.66ghz -
just figured it out - its speedstep becase my power settings was set to power saver even though it waa plugged in

doing a battery test right now for college people
it is on battery mode and power saver in windows
6/16 brightness
simply typing on word - and browsing - browsing alot more than i would in class though since that has a bit more cpu usage (want to get a worst case, rather then best case scenario for typing notes/browsin the net)
started at 12:00am, is telling me 1 hour and 22 min left at 12:20am - i will be perfeclt fine if its 1:30 or more, only because i plan to get a 2nd battery and 3 hours is perfect and even mroe than i need
forgot to mention: running windows aero since i started, would turn it off to get more battery but now i want to see if it still will hit atleast 1:30 with aero running -

I was just at an hour listening to music on windows media player and web browsing in power save mode but I started with like 80% battery, thats not too bad.
In terms of time, yeah its so-so. In terms of time for a 6cell battery tho its really good for this kind of system. -
also forgot to mention, i got this today so its never been drained and has been charged to 100% maybe once before this, then i was running with it around
meaning this doesnt have several full charges yet to get the full battery power -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
yea, it is only a 6-cell battery, to get an hour and a half is pretty impressive.
-
i agree, i think thats quite impressive with a laptop like this. one of the best ive seen personaly but i dnt think ive ever seen a 15" desktop processor laptop - only 17"
anybody know when backup batteries will be for sale, i know there not available yet?
im praying they go on ebay cuz btotech charges $125 -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Hey alex do you know what ram is in your system specificly by any chance?
Seems like your system is the role model for the rest with no flaws/errors.
I think the crash in game mode is still due to memory and not anything else.
If may even be a memory leak... since its crashing sooner now with 1gb of ram and before it was not crashing untill much later with the 2gb OCZ.
I need to flash to the older bios and see what happens maybe the 702 just has issues. -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
I have 1GB of Nanya 667 PC5300 and one stick of Kingston 2GB 667 PC5300. Ken from GenTech set it up for me =)
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Hmm I have the 1gb of Nanya, was thinking about kingston but decided to order some giel. We will see how it goes.
I guess since you have the same memory as me and are not crashing in 3dmark in game mode that leaves just the bios as the varible.
Lets hope a bios change fixes it.
So you on the stock bios or the 502? -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
704, but I never had a problem with 401 or 502.
...
I wonder what ever happened to 603? -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Hmm so this is semi theory then...
The OCZ would crash deep into 3dmark near the end in the cpu test area. I figured it was because thats the most ram intensive test.
Later we confirmed the OCZ has compatiblity issues so I RMAed it and got a 1gb sodimm of Nanya the same one you have wich is confirmed to work.
So it seems to work as now I can run off battery again. However tonight upon going to see if game mode works 3dmark crashes still. Now however it crashes even sooner, before it even gets to the cpu test area.
My theory is there may be a memory leak of sorts. See in a game or program that has a memory leak the more ram you have the longer it takes for a crash. 2gb of ram lasted me nearly to the end, now with 1gb of ram im crashing before the 1/2 point.
The reason you may be ok is because you have a full 3gb of ram, wich is enough to cover the memory leak.
So Alex I have a favor and a good test for you to try.
Take out the 2gb kingston ram and see if you can run 3dmark06 or 05 on game mode with just the 1gb of Nanya.
From there we will know if the problem can be duplicated or if its something on my side still.
My other "guess" was just that 1gb isnt enough to handle 3dmark but still it shouldnt crash, but just run slow, also I shouldget get like 5 blue screens upon windows boot in a row after a crash.
Im going to run the news papers out to the rooms and come back, i have taken my c90 apart so much I can change ram out and have it all together gain in like 1 minute lets see if you can get done in 30min -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
Run newspapers out to rooms, what is it that you do?
Also, You said you bought your processor on the cheap off of eBay...maybe that is the culprit? -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Yeah its brand new tho, I dont see how the cpu can be at fault. it works or it doesnt work.
And if it was the cpu the new ram shouldnt have changed things.
as for my job, hotel manager i work overnight so i run the papers out in the morning to the rooms.
did you get the test done for me tho? seriously if you just test it that will answer alot of questions. -
I will buy one c90s middle next week with 3gb ram at 800 mhz ... probably best results then ... -
thank you, i have an swissarmy backpack that i like very much i would not like to trade it for another one, i search at the internet for the sizes of it and compare with the size of my previous notebook and my backpack!
another question: do you have in your c90 the sticks like the processor, the OS, etc? if i buy the processor and the os they will come with the sticks, right? -
can anyone tell me how to turn off Microsoft Userinit Logon Application that comes with the asus? ...and how to turn off auto login to ur account when u start up window...(beside setting up a password)?
thanks -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
if you have no password it will log onto the account automaticlly as far as I know with no exceptions except if you have more than one account.
I suppose it just makes sense if you have only one account and no password it should log directly on.
As for userinit not sure what that is, I dont belive its installed on my machine, if its just software tho then you should be able to take it off via the add/remove software controlls in the control panel of windows. -
I have 2 account, one is the administrator, and one is an account with my name, the admin one doesn't have a password, but the one with mine have a password...but every time i start up window it auto log on to the admin one.... anyone knows how to turn that off, or what it wrong with it?
thanks -

Im pretty happy with the performance of the new drivers even without overclocking, but it does make you wonder why they did it like that. Maybe the new settings have changed a few key things like the delta and overclocking would be very unstable now.

-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Its supported I belive but not used, meaning it will just be downclocked and waist your money.
Even if it ran at 800mhz the performance gain would be very small. -

want to update that the gskill ram from newegg works perfectly and that I have no problems now @ 3gb
Finaly I have alt + tab while in a game back... with 1gb of ram thats a horrible task with minutes of wait due to massive page file use.
More test on the way to see whats up with the game mode crash, and I may even still try to install a small fan since it will be easy to do. -
is this true?

Excellent review ViciousXUSMC, I've just recently given my Acer 5920 to my fiancee (great laptop btw) and was considering a used G1S.
Feedback on these forums have swayed me to take the plunge on getting a C90. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
You should be very happy with it, despite the few problems I have had I love mine and cant think of any other notebook I would rather have more.
I want to add a little trick I found the other day to this thread...
You can probably use your cell phone bluetooth ear piece as a cordless earphone/mic ^^ I did it the other day and its great. Lets me watch movies or listen to music while at work and nobody knows. It just looks like I have my cell phone ear piece on for recieving phone calls. Nobody knows that my laptop in the back office is acting like my own personal radio station. -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
wow, that is an awesome idea!
-
... ... ...
awesome im getting one right now... well order one anyway.
So V which one do you have... dont want to run into compatibility issues... -

My cell phone came with a Motorola HS815, works great.
I wouldnt go buy one, because they are kind of expensive (mine is like 40$ I think), I just figured its a cool perk or experiment for anybody that already has one.
Its a shame my cell phone cant do this, its a mp3 playing phone but only lets me use it for voice :/ (Sony Erricson W600)
I imagine I'll use it alot tho since it allows me to listen to anything I want in privacy. Easy to toss in the small c90 lappy bag too, but defintily no substitute for full blown earphones if your at home or something.
edit: hmm mines cheaper than I thought only 25$ if you look around - http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000KFUH3A/ref=dp_olp_2/105-4075953-7668428
Still tho id probably recomend buying earphones if your going to buy something. I just thought it was a neat trick to share.
I use it at work when im up front leaving the lappy in the back broadcasting. It will come in handy too when in a public place so I can listen to stuff without anoying everybody around me -
Ill probably get earphones still, but that seems a cool office trick.
do you think it will also work with skype???
maybe ill just change cellphones and look for one that comes with it -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Yeah it works with skype. Not that I have tested it but it says it works.

ViciousXUSMC, could you post some ingame benchmarks between vista 64 and 32 please?

OVERCLOCKING CRASH NEWS!!!
I sent my c90s back to excaliperpc.com on the 20th and got my replacement today (the 27th). One week turnaround is excellent you think! Anyway I am now able to run everything in overclocking mode with no crashes. This is using the same settings, hardware, drivers, thermal grease and methods as before. SO, for those of you that get crashes and lockups, RMA! Stop listening to claims about "memory incompatibility" cause your just wasting time. The bottom line is, that its overheating and the fans arent working right just like ive been saying ALL along!
Go here for all the info:

I apologize if this isn't the best place to post but I'm curious on a couple things about the C90s-
1. Vicious, you said you purchased only the barebones unit from Ken and picked up the rest of your components elsewhere. I'm assuming you mean, CPU, Ram, HDD, and Wireless Adapter (if necessary)? What warranty, if any, did you end up getting? I see on his site that if you don't get a CPU you don't get a warranty or something like that? I thought most Asus systems came with a 2-year...?
2. If you didn't buy your RAM from Ken, what RAM did you go with? It also seems that Ken did send you some compatible RAM though? Just a little confused.
3. So this laptop isn't a good idea to use on your lap? Too hot? I'd only like to use it on my lap occasionally (chillin in bed, watching movies, in the living room, etc..)...I do have a add-on notebook cooler....would that help much?
4. What are the differences E4300 and the E6320? Well...I know what the differences are but are they so significant to warrant the ~ $60 price increase? I'm wanting to be as cost-conscious as possible while still getting good performance.
I think that's it...for now. -
