My headphone jack works perfectly as far as I can tell, with my Razer Carcharias headset, as well as my crappy white iPod earbuds.

    hey guys,

I was reading on the myhpmini.com forum and there is a guy who was able to hack the bios on the mini 311 to overclock from the bios.

he can now overclock the cpu and unlink the memory so that it stays at the same speed and as a result , having a more stable computer.

some people are running 2.2-2.3ghz easy

    http://myhpmini.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=3744

would be nice if someone would do the same for the 1201n bios.

I was told that the bios in the eeetops with n330 and ion can control the overclock from the bios.

I'm curious to ask the guy to take a look at both bios to see what is different etc....

I tested HDMI through Denon to Sony 52" with video set to 1080P. Audio and video sounded and looked great.

I plan to use the Asus as a replacement for my slow WDTV media server. The WDTV chokes on large numbers of (19,000) lossless audio files on external drive. The WDTV uses a SMP8654AD-CBES mips CPU. The Atom kiks its butt.

I also set up Torchlight at 1920×1080 which played and sounded marvelous!

    cheers

    thanks

rome total war is a lot less demanding i think, 2004 title vs 2009 for empire.

so that gives me the suspicion it should run ok. i also have medievil total war 2 which is similar to rome.

    side note:

going for Xp one more time on since i just installed my new WD 320 black.

i aborted the heatsinks for now not sure if ill be going back in there any time soon until i talk to my buddy whose a machinist.

You have the patience of a monk..+1 for effort! I'm interested in how this works for you.

Will the bios support external dvd drive and do you have access to one?
Just wondering if this would improve middle steps/errors/and speed up writes to drive.

I still have about a thousand Descent and Doom mods for the free open GL engines, ie. JDoom.

These run better on the 1201n than my ancient HP345 using ATI M6 and look awesome compared to old DOS versions.

I have a copy of Bioshok 2 but a bit hesitant to waste time with install and any DRM issues. This is a major DRM thorn in my side when I buy games!!!

If you do end up installing BioShock 2 let us know how it plays. That is one of the few games I might actually buy. I was surprised how well BioShock ran 1366x768 on medium with some high end effects on! It blew my mind even though I had to knock it down a slightly to avoid slowdown.

you can, i did several times with a USB CD/DVDrom. i have weird system wide lag issues with XP tho as ive explained in this thread a few times already. tried again last night with my new HDD and ended up with the same issues. i think ive got it nailed down to the Nvidia drivers beeing the causeso im a pretty sad as seeing those are the most necessary ones.... oh well back on W7 again now.

a note on your AC adapter and that noise.im 99% sure its your power brick. i had the same exact issues and a RMA fixed it. *fingers crossed* no more high pitched noises for me. :)

im really loving this 320 black. after a day of using it id say i took maybe a 10min hit on battery life. which in reality is no biggie since load times and over all system performance are faster i get more work done in less time. the drive is a tad louder but not bad just sounds about as loud as the fan does at about medium speed so the system is still very quite. also to note this drive does not make any clicking noise the only sound i actually hear is simply the motor and every now and then when idle i think it parks the heads of to the side. it does tend to vibrate more than the sock HDD but nothing crazy you can only notice when you lay your hand on the right side of the palm rest.

despite the above comments this drive is AWESOME! its a nice amount faster than the stock drive. i truly feel like im using a desktop now. if your on the fence about getting this drive just get it you wont regret it.

i should be getting my 4gb set here in a week or 2... i cant wait to see how much this improves general performance with W7.

update on the lag issue its now gone seems like after i restored the image but i did that before too about 5 times.

but maybe the ac adapter is causing these problems sense it still makes high picths noises and maybe its trying too short something out on the netbook.

sense it was mostly off today

now im wondering is it safe too use the ac adapter till i get a rma?

you dont need to send in the net book too right?

Dell just swapped mine out, no return. If you get to keep old one, you could attach jack to, cut cord, to another 19vdc of higher amperage supply. A lot of Dell OCkers did jut that, swapping 90W units for 120-180 watt supplies.

It should be safe but i would not stress it by OC. Have VOM? you should see 19vdc. Notebook will function down to 12vbc but not charge battery.

    Bluetooth Mouse

I picked up the MS 5000 Bluetooth for on the road use. I love it, no dongles to get lost or damaged USB ports on tight airline trays.

The mouse install and works great, no disconnects or other problems in the last 24 hours. The mouse begins to respond just as the taskbar icons appear after a fresh restart or almost instantly after wakened from sleep.

I see a lot of reports of issues with mouse set to wake computer. The 1201n is not alone, other than overheating related, caused by the USB mouse wake feature. My wake feature is turned off as well on all my laptops.

My preference for gaming is to use a wired mouse to reduce CPU overhead and any radio lag. YMMV.

    Cheers

i sent in everything back with original box cuz of the noise i heard inside my laptop was concerning me that it may have been something inside the 1201n and maybe not the AC adapter but on the test sheet they sent back it said that it was just the AC adapter that was replaced. i haven't heard the noise from ether the brick or laptop since so im assuming maybe there is a small issue with the AC adapters since you prob sounds identical to mine.

    side note:

tried a set of headphones today to see if i have the same issue as others and i do. with my Zune HD set of headphones i only get one channel unless i pull the jack out a tad then i get both channels.

hmm do they need everything back or will they just take the ac back?

sense the ac adapter makes the noise even with the netbook unplug but gets louder when its pluged in.

How does Asus work, will they supply shipping box?

I second SOME GUY and call support. Hopefully they will let you keep old brick, at least, until new one arrives to allow use of netbook.

i just used the same exact packaging that it came to my door from newegg with. i had to pay shipping to ASUS but they paid for return shipping. if i would have went thru newegg RMA they would have paid shipping... but i talked to a few RMA ppl and the RMA would have took forever. if they cant fix it the send it to ASUS.... yea so since they said they only repair and do not replace laptops. this means it would have went to newegg and got diagnosed (3-5days) then shipped to ASUS (2-3days) ASUS would have done thier thing (1day) then sent back to newegg (2-3days) then back to me (2-3days)

f that! i asked the RMA person at newegg why this was the process since they dont have the ability to FIX ANY laptop in house and they didn't have a answer for me.

Yeah, these things are switching supplies. My 90W dell makes a light buzz under load. However my 1201n's 48W supply is near silent and warm running under load.

My 6831's 120W brick can fry eggs..or sounds like it when pushed hard :)

the noise my brick made was an acceptable hum but the noise that was coming from inside my 1201n was not. sounded like someone stepping on 5 kitten tails at the same time followed by the power light on my brick to grow dim while the noise lowered in freq and db (its almost like it was in 240v mode). then the 1201n switched to battery power. the only way i could get the brick to work again was to leaving unplugged for a few minutes and try again. it would randomly happen 2-3 times a day so thats why i RMAed.

in regards to your W870CU project:

im jealous of the room you have to work with in there man. i think you got more surface area than most desktop coolers with all those RAM sinks.

and respect on the drill job most don't have the patience to do stuff like that. :)

I OC'ed today to see how things would hold up stock @1.77Ghz. No problems other than the mentioned freeze in sleep mode. I saw no reason to push the stock ram to BSOD. I played about 15 minutes of HL2 but will check frame rate when time permits.

some guy, do you lower clocks to shut down..or just shut it down with clocks saved in OC Tuner?

    Brief update on my 1201N

I got my new Ram and upgraded it and did see and 'feel' a small performance boost. Like most my Ram shows 3.25 GB usable of 4.00 GB. My battery life on the other hand is a little bit more disappointing than my previous post. I am averaging just under 4 hours when fully charged with WiFi on Bluetooth off and screen brightness relatively low, my first run through gave me roughly 4 hours as I previously posted. I haven't had a random shutdown since the first one I experienced so I hope it was an aberration, I did change the mouse settings to prevent the wireless mouse from waking the computer out of sleep mode which was a solution found by another 1201N user in another forum linked to this thread. Since I haven't had a random shutdown event since the first I decided not to upgrade the BIOS since I haven't done anything like that in awhile.

I installed Halo and was pleased to find I can run it nicely 1366*768 with settings on high. Also installed BioShock and ran it 1366*768 on high and walking around works, but when in confrontations the frame rate does drop a lot however I'm think some of the overclockers here may be able to make to make it playable on those settings. Running BioShock at 1280*720 on medium is playable.

I may download FRAPs and get some FPS estimates up for BioShock and Halo to post them here, but not until this weekend. If there is a more accurate program let me know.

id say FRAPS is pretty much the standard. i use Evga's precision cuz it shows the temps as well as many other things.

    @ hydra

i just just shut down or hibernate (i never use sleep). i don't turn the clocks back down before i do ether. had no probs with it yet.

hydra, so far it is hard to find anything that would make me dislike this little baby. I am going to make a detailed review on it, but so far I am very pleased.
Just a few things on the minus side, I am really not sure about that small charger plug, it is kinda flimsy, and it gets quite hot, but I guess that is not a big deal. I am happy to report that I don't have any headphone plug issues, and no annoying noises from the charger or the laptop it self. The temperatures stay in the normal for that unit around 50 CPU and 55GPU, but the fan is quiet so no big deal, anyway I plan to do some modification following the example provided by @Some guy, also the keyboard flex is not that big, but still noticeable, which also will be fixed by the method of @some guy (who was kind enough to share with us).

    Close call today!
My black Lab knocked my little ole 1201 half way across den table. I thought the power plug was a goner but all came through with out a problem. I have bad feelings with the gimpy power plug on the 1201.
I replaced my HP's jack two years ago, that jack was 3x as big. Accidental warranty would have been nice?

Apple Mag-Safe jacks should be on every laptop, no?

    Hello all!

I have been reading through your thread and have a couple of questions if you wouldn't mind.

    1) I saw some talk of CS source being run, only upgrade I think I will do will be a RAM upgrade and possibly a bump to 64 bit 7, with 4/8GB ram (32/64 bit) will this thing get decent FPS?
    2) Also I saw some games being mentioned, but no real marks or numbers. I am thinking mostly orange box games, does this fair okay at low to med settings with stock, I do not want to OC and kill it because of heat.
    3) Finally overall thoughts, I have a 17" 8600mgt lappy dual core and just want to put it to rest and replace with this netbook and a decent desktop, think this machine can hold off Orange box games while on the road?

    Thanks a ton,

    Andrew

The Atom 330 is not strong enough to keep a 25fps average on the Source engine.

CS:S is playable, but not enjoyable. CS:S is using the older version of the Source engine and is only single threaded. TF2 is dual threaded, but there are far more orchestrated actions and physics going on in that game that the only playable class would be an engineer if you want to play on dustbowl pubs. L4D and L4D2 run okay on easy and normal. Advanced and expert level hoards are too taxing on the CPU.

My point here is that you can play all of these games just fine, but only on smaller servers that aren't filled with chaos.

Was surfing the forum yesterday and came across this netbook. I was looking for a replacement for my work Lenovo X300 (I'm transferring, and was in the market for a personal replacement as I have to turn the X300 in). Had settled on another machine, then came across this thread. Did a bunch of research, and did a compulsive click on the submit button w/ next day shipping.

Arrived today. Bought the 1201N, the WD Scorpio, and 4GB of RAM. Resisted the urge to turn it on when it came out of the box, and did the following:

    - Replaced the HDD with the Scorpio
    - Upgrade the RAM
    - Copied my Win7 DVD (from my desktop build) to a USB key
    - Changed BIOS to use the external device first for boot
    - Installed Win7 HP x64 on the brand new drive. Used the Win7 key on the label on the bottom of the netbook.
    - Installed x64 drivers
    - Installed all my normal apps/games/etc

Thing boots/runs like an absolute charm. Want to thank the folks on this forum for their posts and reviews/opinions. Soviet, some_guy, hydra, rex, and others. Thanks!

Best $650 overall I've spent in a long time. Only complaints:

    - "Fingerprint magnet" = Understatement of the year
    - Mouse rocker button.. Seems a bit flimsy

Don't think I'll OC it, and am debating on replacing the thermal paste with MX-2. Other than that, excellent machine and well worth the money!

    Cheers,

Whoa! you did all this before first boot? LOL you had every thing pretty much lined up!

Ever since I got my DOA E1705 I like to sit back and let things, umm, burn in for a while on new laptops. I'm such a wuss!

arcticspinnaker is a prime example of what a real man is. I did the same thing on all my previous notebooks, mainly because of impatience, and have gotten them running as smooth as butter moreso compared to other users when they took their notebooks for a first spin out of the box.

I agree. The 1201N is so high maintenance when it comes to fingerprints that I find myself having to wipe my notebook more than I wipe my butt in a day. It's not that I don't like the glossy finish, rather it's just more work to keep it clean or else the grease from our fingers will turn nasty on the notebook.

In retrospect, probably should have fired it up at least once out of the box.. :)

Anyway, writing this on my new 1201N, sitting on the couch watching an episode of "Band of Brothers" and enjoying the netbook more and more. Pretty much one of the best "impulse buys" I've ever made. Other than a few minor things, fits exactly what I need, for a decent price.

Will play with it more to tweak it and such this weekend. So far, so good. Though not a negative, a nice to have would have been a tiny LED (in lieu of a back lit kb) in the lid to illuminate the keyboard (like the ThinkPads). But all in all, it's a netbook and will force me to improve my touch typing skills.

Other than that, the glossy finish looks nice.... if that's all you're gonna do (look at it). Have thrown a large microfiber cleaning cloth in my bag just for this baby :)

LOL, yep that Dell experience had me looking over my shoulder trying to explain to tech support why fans were not running. I had to scramble to get everything back to stock before Dell "at home" changed out defective main board.

The 1201 has the HDMI out, it's been fun running "Band of Brothers" through the big screen with the receiver off loading the audio. I plan to set this up as a media server when not out paying bills.

pretty much like Sovietsunrise said. its not the best choice for playing source games.

i love TF2, HL2, portal, etc... so this was a big deal to me to know if they were "playable" before buying the 1201n as well so i could get some gaming on the go if i needed.

i have found that running lean on services and background programs you aren't using coupled with running in DX8 mode @ lowest settings/native rez can make for ok gameplay with these games. OCing helps nicely too. when i playTF2 it may drop down to as low as 10 Fps when a lot is going on here and there but id say i avg around 20-40Fps on a 10 man server.

with CSS @ the same settings i get about 50Fps in the stress test. playing CSS on a server with 5 bots id say i grabbed a 25-50Fps avg. was actually pretty smooth.

keep in mind im running @ 1.9ghz with the stock 2gb.

this is my backup/portable PC so it fit all the happy mediums i needed it to fill for the budget. it seems your may be looking at this for the same needs i was so id say go for it but don't expect to get the same Fps you got on your old lappy. the Atom CPU is just not powerful enough.

I once was MVP on my team in TF2 when playing as engineer on defense on near full 32 man dustbowl server. The other team was just so horrible that my sentry racked up kill after kill defending the cap. And I was getting less than 10fps most of the time, haha.

Shame we can't get DDR 800 ram that over clocks well. I would like to see some single channel (one stick) ram vs dual channel just to see what you give up in performance.

These guys may have some user input; http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewforum.php?id=75

    About your cas 4 ram gskill choice, one user wrote (newegg);

Pros: my windows 7 laptop is noticably faster since I upgraded to the faster larger ram. well worth the money.

Cons: didn't work in my eee even though the specs are right.

Other Thoughts: don't buy it for an eeepc, buy it for a regular laptop instead.

Im keep on looking at this netbook but something keep making me wait to order this. I see that everyone is loving it and I need something bigger then my 1005ha. Ion2 is close but I dont know if asus will update the 1201n with the new ships soon though.

@ someguy ram is doing great so far :)

pretty much i keep my 1201n @ 2120 and its stable like that i still have thoes lag problems which isint the ram fault in counterstrike sometimes but playing call of duty world at war online with like 20 something people in the server doesn't give me any online lag so i say source games is just weird sometimes lol

but ya the ram lets the cpu on the 1201n overclock nicely too bad octuner has a limit or something on the 1201n has a lmit when you try too go pass 177fsb it just doesn't do anything even if you try 180 stays at 2120.. dont think noone ever went pass 2120.

but still im fine with the 2120 overclock lol

ya i wish there was some 800mhzs ram that will overclock like 667 but don't think there is any pretty much every buddy on the eee forums tried all kinds of 800mhzs ram and couldn't get the too 2120 what the gskill lets the cpu do.

tho they say there isint much difference if any even if there was 800mhzs ram that will overclock vs the 667 some person had there stock 800mhzs ram got there cpu too 2ghz but it didn't yield any better performance with the 667mhzs ram @ 2ghzs

if you not overclocking than 800mhzs ram is the way too go but 667 is better for overclocking.

    @ hydra.

    thanks for your input.

    @ gordesky1

thanks! ill be going with what you have then. :)

    @ rfs830

i don't have any facts for you and im not sure where to get them at this point but from roomers and speculation that ive read i think the only thing ION2 may bring to the table that ION doesn't is maybe a tad better battery life due to switching video from the ION2 down to the pinetrail integrated gfx. which may only be like 10% better battery life at most. pinetrail isn't much better in any way over whats shipping in netbooks now. the HP 311 with ION gets a nice 6hrs which is right on par with most netbooks with that size battery. so i don't think ION sucks much juice to begin with for it make or break someones choice over ION2 and you cant get better video performance out of something already bottle necked by the CPU so badly.

right now i don't see a reason to wait for ION2 (or pinetrail for that matter) unless its joined with a Core2 solo or something at the same price point.
