That's too warm, but it is GE62 where the heat can be easily felt at times. If you upgrade to a more premium model such as MSI GT series or ASUS GM501 then you will definitely fare better since they are all at least $2000.

Did you notice that the power cord didn't have plastic wrap around it? Also, did you notice that C:/eSupport only has one directory in it and that directory only has PDFs in it (i.e., all the driver/software files are missing)

I bought four of them from Costco, and all of them had visible specks of dust the sizes of dead pixels.

On another note. I have also bought three of the -XS74 models from Best Buy (two were returned, one I just got today...). All three had the same issue with specks of dust. I am on the verge of having to buy an eight Zephyrus M. This is really frustrating...

Did you have a chance to take pictures of the dead pixels? That's crazy high amount of failure in a batch.

    Hello all,

I'm typing on my 1 week old Zephyrus M GM501GS. I've got an issue with my touchpad, its really bad in that it looses tracking randomly and tracks poorly.

I suspect its got something to do with the drivers? In the device manager under "Mice and Other Pointing Devices" I have "HID-compliant device", I would have thought I'd see something along the lines of ELAN or Synamtics?

    Any advice?

i just got the GM501 and had a question. I'm running it in GSYNC mode and noticing screen tearing when not playing games. It mainly happens on windows desktop. Any idea if my unit is defective or if its a driver issue? I'm on the most recent nvidia drivers 10/4/18.

What variant of the GM501 are you running? The GS or the GM?
    Also, what's your BIOS version?

is anyone else experiencing really high temps while gaming? i read through the various undervolt posts and i tried it at the recommended ts -.125 and .-50 settings and its not bringing my temps down. i'm experiencing high 80c - 93c without gsync and with gsync on it tops out at like 96c. i'm just wondering if i have a defective unit or if this is normal. this is while running monster hunter world btw. thanks.

On a few occasions. I need to get them off my phone. One time I also found this in the area above the keyboard.

I check for dead pixels and specks of dust on the screen religiously. I load 1920 × 1080 images of pure white/red/green/blue and comb through them with a glasses cloth. If I see a spec and it doesn't wipe away, it is game-over.

I have zero tolerance on this matter. If I am spending 2200+tax on a laptop, it better have a flawless screen.

(I am going in for a eighth one... I don't want to pay the Razer tax for a GTX 1070 and reliance totally on expensive M.2 drives)

Original 1080 Maxq GX501 owner here. I am very happy with the laptop, aside from the difficult to clean fans.

Just wondering if anyone has had experience with both the original and "M" versions?

Which did you prefer and why?

Is that for GPU? I got mine from HIDevolution with the thermal grizzly conductonaut on both CPU and GPU, and when everything is under FULL LOAD the CPU will cap at 70c and the GPU will stay at 90c.

Curious if you have performed any undervolting or Vinny, or is that simply with the LM treatment?

I finally got my hands on this amazing laptop, I did a clean install and then I soon started to mess around with throttlestop to lower temps on cpu, undervolting -125 mV on cpu core and -48.8 mV on cpu cache as almost everyone suggested. Neverthless, I came across some problems, and I have some questions for anyone willing to answer:

    • What's the difference between Throttlestop "on" and "off"? As I haven't noticed particular changes, I read some guides but still I don't understand.
    • If I enable speed shift through throttlestop and set its value to 128, I get better temps but I also notice that performance get worse instead with the balanced fan profile, with some stuttering during games. Is it the same for you, should it be normal? I wonder, so, if speedshift should be enabled or not and with what value.
    • I noticed that optimus/g-sync switch, after restart, takes a bit to happen: desktop appears zoomed as if no graphic driver is installed, then in task manager it always shows an nvidia process taking some % of cpu for around a minute or two, and then graphic switching actually takes place. Is it normal?
    • Shouldn't the rear logo turn off when using battery? Cause mine does not turn off, and I don't understand why. I have latest bios and firmware version .306, does it remain on to you either?

    Thanks in advance ;-)

Eight time is the charm it seems. This one has no dead pixels of specks of dust behind the screen cover.

I just start AC Odyssey on it and the fans got real loud. How do I modulate how load they get?

I am running XTU on stock right now. My temperatures are only going to ~78 at Max. This is lower than what they go to on AC Odyssey. The fans are on balanced and are pretty loud.

    Is this normal?

I've been playing AC Odyssey since pre-release. The game takes a VERY heavy toll.
    • I have little experience tinkering with computers. I bought the Zephyrus M in August after reading all of these reviews and figuring I would learn some new skills
    • I have a stock system, have done no internal thermal pads/paste. I have 0 experience undervolting, but I got TS and set it to the standard -49.8/-125. I don't know how to do anything better.
    • I play in my kitchen so it's a fairly standard 22.5 degrees
On my first day of heavy play I noticed TS wasn't on (I haven't figured out how to make it start during boot. Temps registered on ROG Gaming center above 95. I freaked out. I realized TS was the the issue. I now am consistently between 80-85. I generally won't play more than 2 hrs in a row before giving the system (and me... I think I'm getting carpal tunnel) a 15 minute break.

Fans can be changed in the ROG gaming center, or by clicking Fn F5. That being said if you are playing heavy video loads like AC, it should be on overboost. I don't know what happens to your computer when it gets temps over 100... but I assume it's very very bad.

Thanks to the community for this thread, it's given me a lot of info and some basic "tinker with my system" confidence.

Hi All - just bought mine last Thurs, really impressed with it so far. Only gripe is that the fans are really, really loud at full blast. I can appreciate that it's keeping things relatively cool. I'm getting low 80's in Overwatch, -125 mv core, -50.8 mv cache undervolt, overboost fans - seems ok? Anyone found it to be stable at even lower undervolts? I was getting failed workers on Prime95 at -90-110 mv core but ended up getting stable tests and lower temps around 125 after changing battery profile (plugged in) to best performance - dumb mistake.

With that said, I'm curious about repasting to get temps a bit lower for main purpose of getting fan noise down a bit. Is LM worth the risk? I do move my laptop around but its not a daily traveler. I'm relatively computer literate (built desktops in the past) but the risk of spillage frying the comp is intimidating. Would Kryonaut be a better alternative for what I'm trying to do? Also - per Bob's (awesome) teardown video, all of the areas where you'd normally see heat pads are instead thermal pasted. Would removing the paste and apply Fujipoly pads there be beneficial to overall temps? I'm not really familiar with pads' purpose/positioning/function so sorry if that's a dumb question. Any thoughts on sizing/thickness of the pads if you think they're worth adding?

Can you link what you mean? I haven't had a problem linking with my 1080p monitor. When I connected to my UHD TV yesterday; however, I couldn't get it to run 4K 60Hz. It was stuck at either 24 or 30 (I forget). This was with the same cable and TV HDMI port that my desktop 1060 was able to output 4k60 on.

This will only affect you if you are trying to get two displays out of the Thunderbolt 3 display. You can easily connect one display out of the HDMI while connecting the other through an adapter from the TB3. Some computers have dual display support for the TB3 port, meaning it can connect to two displays. This one can only connect to one. I have ordered a VGA/DVI/HDMI combo-dongle. When I get a chance, I will try to see if it can power to displays at once.

I think it's safe to say now that the zephyrus's cooling is not good enough for gaming at all honestly you have to cut off almost 30 percent of the laptop's power performance to get the best temperatures I have undervolt and the gpu and cpu and I have thermal grizzly on cpu and gpu and I also bought the aftermarket heating pads as well, but the laptop still keeps running hot its redicoulus there is nothing else at this point we can do to make the laptop run cooler

Actually, I don't understand why you're saying that.
With speedshift enabled and undervolting -125 / -49.8 you get around 80-85° max on cpu and 75-78° max on gpu (awesome for a full 1070 in such a thin chassis), which is far enough from power limits. You don't loose anything with that settings, maybe it's just a matter of finding the best speedshift value to avoid stuttering in intensive games, but definitely no performance loss, as cpu and gpu reach respectively their peak of 3.9 GHz and upload_2018-10-20_20-25-57.gif 1800-1850 MHz

Still testing that, as from what i've seen it's really a matter of which game you play... but I think I found the best spot to be from 110 to 120. I found 128 to cause stuttering in some games, is it the same for you?
Note that I didn't repaste, and I always use balanced fan profile (I found overboost to strangely raise temperatures instead of decreasing them).

The problem is when speedshift is disabled, and in that case I agree with you, as temps can still go up to 90° for the cpu. But also in that case though, temp is far from 105° cpu limit

You could try 120 and see if it works for you too. With that I seem to get almost no stuttering and temps are good (cpu 78-80°, 85° max). Yes, if you go under 100 or 110 it becomes hot again, unluckily.

I am using msi afterburner to monitor temps, and I have to say though, that even with speedshift disabled, I don't see cpu go over 85°. Only when I close the game and watch max values I see 88-90° peak, so maybe it's just for a second or two.

The thing is with this laptop is that when you increase the fan to overboost it overclocks the gpu and cpu that's why the Temps increase and also performance is significantly increased as well and likewise happens when you lower the fanspeeds the laptop will slightly underclock and Temps will decrease. I feel like this is stupid engineering they should of just kept the performance the same regardless of the fan speed, but in a way it helps you to prevent serious damage to the laptop.

I imagined that... it's a stupid choice indeed. But with balanced profile, the clocks seem to be default ones to me with no underclocking (as opposed to the "silent" one, that caps 1070 core clock to around 1 GHz). The overclocking thing with overboost mode I think it may be related to the strange intel xtu process I found running in the background, associated with rog gaming center.

Interesting, that is news to me that the cpu/gpu are overclocked in fan overboost setting... In my experimentation I have found that overboost fan setting does nothing but increase fan speed/noise and keep my zephyrus running much cooler under load (75-80C instead of ~90C).

Yup, if the system runs cooler then the performance increases due to extra headroom for the components to work harder.

It's not Best Buy exclusive, there are other resellers including us who carry the same model.
However, the pictures are clearly showing GX531 so they used incorrect pictures.

Excited to get my Zephyrus M this Wednesday. Working with HIDevolution was a fantastic experience and went extremely smooth. @Donald@HIDevolution was particularly helpful. I'm also glad I found this forum when I was doing my initial research...answered a lot of questions I didn't know I had. @Phoenix are you still doing your special tweaking for HIDevolution customers? Thanks!

@Ultra Male apparently my last post didn't link for some reason. Are you still doing your special tweaking for HIDevolution customers? Thanks!

Yes I do, tag me when you get it and have your OS fully updated before you do in order for us to not waste time updating your OS

My Zephyrus M just showed up today from HIDevolution great service from @Donald@HIDevolution helping with some spec questions and stuff. Now I just have to make it thru the rest of the day at work to try it out got it just in time too before I have to head out of town. @Ultra Male can I set up a time to a tweaking session one of these days and is there anything I need to have ready before hand?
