Hi, I recently bought my Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 GTX1080 and now I am in need of reverting it to factory settings. I cannot find the factory settings option. Seems even my recovery drive is not working. Can anyone provide me the link to download the ISO file or the recovery files to reset it to the Factory settings with all the software (ASUS ROG Softwares) coming with the laptop? Thank you!

    you're paying more for less

this cooling system is not designed to handle 45w quad cpu, let alone a 6-core

Thanks for the reply. Can you please explain me as I am not fimilar with terms. Can you please explain it more. The last year model had 1080 Max q and had good comments with respect to the cooling, is it due to the top part ventilation.

    your "1080 max-q" is basically a 1070 notebook

you're already thermally limited, adding the 6-core cpu would result in much worse temp/performance

Asus could have had a bombass laptop, but they f'd up the gm501 in some ways.

    Pro:
huge pro.... software switching between gsync and optimus.

I wish there were a software hack to make my GL502 switch to optimus. I hate the battery sapping gsync.

    Con:
crap port selection. No mini displayport. displayport is royalty free i think. Why did they not put in a displayport.... forcing you to buy a usb-c adapter.

Seems like this is a better option in the "thin and light" category than others (the MSI Stealth Thin GS65 looks incredible but it's even smaller). Is there hate on this new model of the Zephyrus because of the past ones deficiencies? It seems the new one has addressed some of them (according to reviews) or is it just this forum's general bias against the tradeoffs for "thin and light" (which I need for work travel, not going to lug a 6-7+lb laptop in addition to my work machine)?

None of the current laptops with 6 core chips, whether locked or unlocked, can handle the thermals without liquid metal repasting.

Even on the GT75 Titan (which has equal cooling ability close to a properly rebalanced and repadded 17R4), HIDevolution's own tests on the unlocked i9 had it reaching 100C at stock paste with no overclock. The Alienware usually does better if the GPU isn't loaded at the same time, since then all the heatpipes can cool the CPU. But even the 17R5 reaches 95C+ WITH A KRYONAUT REPASTE.

Only Liquid metal can save these chips. And good luck with staying under 100C with liquid metal if you exceed 4 ghz on all 6 cores. (most games won't use all 12 threads. But run cinebench R15= 99C ggwp)

Is it just me, it seems that the Aero 15x and the GS65 get a lot more attention than this one.. Ok it has a crappy battery and thick bezels, but a regular GTX1070 (!) Unfortunately there aren't many reviews yet..

Part of the problem is the weight and size. The Zephyrus is a bit larger. So for me that's a worry. Although yeah that full 1070 is appealing. I also don't like ASUS' support...it's a tough call.

Ordered one through HID Evolution, but won't be getting it until early June. Should be interesting to see how the temps fare but based on the reviews I've seen I'm not too worried.

Don't listen to them. Between the MSI Gigabyte, & Asus Zephyrus, the Zephryus is the only one wit ha full on GTX 1070. It is also the only one capable of both Optimus(Graphics GPU switching) & G-Sync(for incredible smoothness, and his FPS gaming). I have had this laptop for 2 weeks now, and it is just amazing. I'm just now waiting on my 1TB PCI-e NVME drive, so I can install it. I played Far Cry 5 for over 5 hours straight, and no thermal throttling at all. The secret is in how the rear of the laptop open for extra cooling.

If there is any battery drain, he wouldn't be able to game 5 hours straight, right?

Have you experienced this by yourself? (the wine and drainage)

Looking at getting the 1060 version of this, however I haven’t been able to find any information on it; everyone seems focused on the 1070 version.

Does anyone know if the cooling setup is identical between the two?
Any other differences that aren’t storage/memory/cpu related?

I’ve got an Alienware m18x r1 with 1 working 580m in it and it’s tired, it needs to be put to rest.

I have the old model with 1080 and do not have battery drain, yet while gaming or under heavy load, the battery dropps to 95/94% and keeps that level. I assume this is a battery saver function.

Guys check out the review from Linus!

Today I also pre-ordered the GM501 at HIDevolution. My thanks go out to @Donald@HIDevolution for being very helpful and quickly answering all the questions that I had. (a lot ^^) I'll write a review when it arrives.

I am thinking of getting this laptop but I am a bit wary of the opening mechanism on the bottom. It seems quite flimsy from what I can see in review videos. I use my laptop on top of a pillow on my lap sometimes and I think that might be an issue. Also, I've hardly seen any review videos for the GTX 1060 model (which is what I will be getting if ever). Would love to know the battery life on that one.

My other choice is the GS65 from MSI, but the build quality is pushing me away from it. Would have been great otherwise, love the slim bezel and the battery life.

Did you check the Gigabyte Aero 15w v8? Better battery life and since you are going with a gtx1060 there are many more alternatives.

    Samsung’s Notebook Odyssey Z, Dell’s XPS 15 and G3 15, Clevo has a few (cheaper) options.

Seems to be only 4 screws

I have but it is not offered officially in my region. I could get it from unofficial sources but warranty would be an issue.

Same goes for all Clevo, Samsung Odyssey (dislike the look on this one). The Dell ones I'm keeping my eyes on. Don't see much details about the G3 yet.

Edit: Also seems like the XPS 15 only offer up to 1050TI?

    And it's the 1060 version.

Edit: just placed my order with HID for this laptop.

So far from what I've been reading it's an improvement over my Aorus x5v7 (up for sale soon, if anyone is interested l).

I own the Gm501, while the fans do get loud on overboost, my model does not produce coil whine. I have not noticed the battery drain while gaming for upwards of 5 hours, nor at work over the course of 8 hours

Honestly, the bezel is something that I don't find myself paying attention to all that much. The fan mechanism on a pillow may cause additional over heating, personally its just something I wouldn't do. However it's going to be better than laptops with the fan located on the bottom. (I have an Alienware 18 that does atleast) I'm very impressed with the build quality of the zepheryus, and the 144hz screen for me is pretty amazing. I've never had a screen with a refresh rate so that may simply be my own ignorance

Using this laptop to game without an adapter is completely pointless. I haven't needed to use it solely off battery, and I doubt I will 99% of the time. I need to keep it for three years due to work policies regarding upgrading. But this thing really does require a USB c adapter

I'm very happy with it. I bought it attempting to get down to 1 computer instead of having one for work and one for gaming. I deal with pretty large excel files and handle quite a bit of multi tasking at work. At home it's replacing my Alienware 18 that has 770m's in sli.
For work it's been pretty phenomenal. They keyboard is actually pretty good. The processor is pretty amazing. I don't notice the fan noise in an office environment, but I do notice it at home when I am gaming. I tend to use headphones more now.
I had to buy a usbc hub.

I rarely ever run on battery alone. I would like to get another adapter at some point.
Finicky things I have run across but I'm sure will be ironed out.

    1. The WiFi has intermittent drop outs (generally when connecting to 5ghz. Both at work and at home)
    2. I've noticed delayed start up and shut down times. I'll have to figure out what's hanging.
    3. Sometimes it seems like the processor takes a bit to get going from idle.

I have yet to see heavy throttling from heavy usage, which I hear has been a pretty significant concern for some. I have noticed a bit of slowing when I have to run a large batch process, but compared to what I was dealing with in the past, it's hardly anything to be disappointed about.

I will be looking at getting an additional 16gb of ram over the next 2 years. I intend on using this as my daily driver for the next 3-4 years.

For all the gm501 owners I have a question does the laptop get hot if you are using it in your lap during normal usage? and also how long does the battery last on a full charge with optimus mode and power saving mode activiated, during just normal tasks such as web browsing and some youtube videos

Hello, I have the ASUS Zephyrus M GM501 with GTX 1070 that I ordered from HIDevolution with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on CPU + GPU, and Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pads on heat sensitive surfaces.

I would like to say I am very pleased with this laptop and I have played some games with this very powerful notebook.

All of these statistics come from Overboost mode with my fans

Starcraft II, Shogun Total War runs around 72-78C on the GPU, 76-82C CPU.
Warframe runs around 72-77 GPU almost max graphics (Capped 144hz display ingame settings), forgot about the CPU temps but im pretty sure it is about the same

On the other hand, CPU/GPU intensive games like Black Desert Online can hit 85C Max on GPU and 90-94 Max on CPU (It doesn't stay there, it hits these temps and drops after a second)
Average GPU/CPU temps while playing on Black Desert online Max graphics is about a fair 81-83 GPU, 78-88 CPU
Medium graphics seem to be 1-2C lower
But when I switch to lower graphics the game runs an average 72-78C on GPU and 72-82 CPU

I would say expect high temperatures for games with high demand for CPU/GPU such as Black Desert or PUBG. The temperatures vary, some days max graphics on Black Desert can be lower by 3C or higher by 3C mainly because I think it has to do with the temperature in the room or whenever I am not using a cooling pad. I hope I provided useful information for people who are trying to buy this model. This is definitely not a cool laptop for high demanding games but medium and low demanding games will be just fine.

Also I hope these temperatures are pretty normal and won't hurt my laptop in the long run. I am really curious about other temps for users that have this laptop without repaste.

Now on another topic, I downloaded ROG Aura Core, was working for a couple days then all of a sudden it just stopped being launched. I've pretty much done everything to try to fix it but I guess i'll wait for a hotkey fix or something. Does anybody have the same problem with this?

If more people got the GM501 (GTX 1070) from HIDevolution with Conductonaut and Fujipoly pads, can you let us know how the thermals are when gaming and using it normally :O Would be great so see more results!!

I must say that I expected better temps then this too be honest, especially with Conductonaut. Have you tried undervolting? @Donald@HIDevolution when testing this particular notebook after production, are you getting the same results?

I forgot to mention, this is undervolted -0.06V with Intel's extreme utility. -0.07V can work but anything lower I don't trust. -0.08V seems too risky. I tried to do -0.100V but its too low and my computer restarted when I was playing games. If it wasn't undervolted I would probably get about 2-4C higher for CPU and 1-2C higher for GPU. But these values vary depending on what game.

Also I'm getting around 45C CPU/50-55 GPU idle temps on overboost fan and 5C higher idle on silent fan.

Thanks for the extra insights! I must say I'm quite disappointed. I've got one on order too, but with the "raised" cooling system ASUS uses in combination with liquid metal, I expected much better temperatures then this for the CPU. 90+ isn't good at all too be honest.

Yea i was expecting better temps but this is what I got. I used CPUID monitor + ROG gaming center to monitor the temps for two weeks. If it does hit 90+, it stays for a second and drops down to the 80s. Most of the time it doesn't even go back to the 90s. This is only if I play high intense GPU/CPU games such as Black Desert on Max graphics. Every other game the max CPU hits about 84-88 and sticks around 74-82 most of the time.

    How much does it throttle?

I don't think I've had any throttling. But sometimes the wifi drops randomly but not often, I'm not sure why. I think someone here also has the same issue.

That’s strange, the Intel 9260 should be a decent card. Perhaps an update is an incoming to fix this.

By the way, how’s using it on your lap? Seeing how the bottom panel raises up, do you think it feels flimsy/risky using it on your lap?

It does get hot on my lap if im playing games. Other than that I do not think it flimsy or risky on the lap. Its sturdy not flimsy to me but I wouldn't abuse its limit. I mostly set it on a table on a cooling pad while using it. I also have a microfiber cloth to clean the screen/backlid. the metallic lid catches fingerprints easily.
