Turns out the fullscreen lag is dependent on games not having an "exclusive fullscreen" option. If in doubt, please add "-window-mode exclusive" to a Steam game's launch options. Note that this sometimes has the opposite effect where a game can't be displayed at full resolution.

Also, any recommendation for a cheap stylus? Seems like the generic capacitive touch styluses don't work well on this panel.

 

Ugh, I noticed the HDMI port keeps flickering and disconnecting, anyone else keep having this problem? It worked fine back in February but I've had updates since then. I tried rolling back my NVIDIA driver to the previous update but it still has the same problem.

 

Fellow UX550VD owners, does your laptop work with Secure Boot enabled in the BIOS? My boot drive disappears when Secure Boot enabled and so the laptop will only boot into the BIOS. If I disable Secure Boot and enable CSM (legacy mode) then it will see the drive and boot into Windows as normal. I would prefer to be able to use Secure Boot but I can't find a way around this.

I bought this laptop 2nd hand and so I don't know what is normal for this model? I only noticed this problem after updating to the latest BIOS (ver 303 to ver 307). I've tried downgrading back to ver 303 so see if it's a BIOS issue but it's still the same.

 

Can anyone tell me if the UX550VD supports video out over USB-C?

 

Yes, all TB3 rated USB-C ports are capable of 4k UHD video output.

 

Is there a limit to the refresh rate when using USB-C output? The HDMI port is only HDMI 1.4 so would this apply to the TB3?

Unfortunately I still can't get my HDMI port to work properly at 1080p/60hz on my UX550GE. It will flash some horizontal lines before intermittently cutting out. Not sure if it is a hardware issue or something screwed up with the NVIDIA drivers (I tried reinstalling them to no avail), but it still sometimes works when I change it to 60i or at a lower resolution. Currently I use an external Anker HDMI multi-hub, but with certain apps it seems like a very sloppy solution (perhaps because it relies on the integrated GPU).

I have to say that I am a bit disappointed at the performance of this laptop. Lightroom is rather sluggish and even browsing 4K videos on YouTube on Chrome. Many apps like video players are also poorly optimized for it, even MPC and VLC show stutters with certain videos. Audio drivers are terrible as it only does 48kHz at 16/24-bit and sometimes after a heavy load it starts to crackle until you disable/enable the Realtek driver again. Bluetooth audio connectivity is also hit or miss, even though the latency is fairly small for gaming. There seems to be a death grip where my palm resting left of the touchpad leads to more disconnects.

 

You should be able to run displayport through TB3 just fine. Idk why you're having issues, but on my UX550VE, I can hook up a portable 1080p monitor and run it at 60hz no problem. I also don't have any coil-whine in my unit which I've heard so much about, I must have hit the silicon lottery.

Reading this old post reminded me, I made a promise over a year ago so tonight I started the project. I absentmindedly made an annoying mistake but I'll get to that later because the results are pretty impressive!

I'm pretty impressed considering I forgot to put thermal pads under all 4 ddr4 memory modules! XDDD Hahaha. I knew I couldn't put liquid metal so it was either cryonaught or arctic pads, I decided for the arctic pads but forgot to put them in. Still MAJOR improvement. Here:

I just have to get some thermal pads under the ddr4 memory but it's making enough contact right now to transfer heat better than their stock thermal paste hahaha. I do need to tweak graphics settings to get boost going in my GPU tests.

 

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum. As soon as I discovered this owner's lounge, I knew I had to make an account. I have the UX550GE with GTX 1050 TI, Intel Core i7-8750H @ 2.20GHz, 16GB memory. I got it in 2019 (I've had it for a little over a year). I do a lot of research on this stuff and am quite tech-savvy, but still consider myself a beginner to a lot of this. I've recently been very conscious of its thermal throttling, and since I do some heavy stuff on it (exporting large projects from Ableton and such) I want to do as much as I can to give my computer a fair fight.

I've heard that this computer can be tricky to deal with. I've undervolted it following the directions a few pages back. I even managed to undervolt the cores to -.140 and the graphics card to -.110 (I used XTU to undervolt). I also keep it in a vertical stand with the fans facing up. I don't get temp readings higher than 80/85C while playing GTA V, but I recently exported a large project from Ableton and it still got up above 95C before shutting off in the middle of the export. I'm planning on taking it somewhere to get repasted (since I'm not confident enough to do it myself) but I feel like I should've gotten better results from the undervolting. Did I do something wrong? Does anyone else have tips?
