    Hello everyone,

Does your hard drive which come with the laptop shows a warning in HDTunePro? The number of (C4) reallocation event count keeps going up. Is that normall?
    Thanks!

Hi, I've just ordered one of the i3 CPU versions of this unit. I realise that this unit has soldered RAM visable on the motherboard when the bottom cover has been taken off. But has anyone confirmed there is no RAM slot on the other side of the motherboard for another RAM module to be added?

I know at least one Zenbook has this arrangement and the X502 does as well.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

[UPDATE] I received the X202E board yesterday. Swapping the motherboard is quite easy. It matched perfectly with X201 board and just worked without glitch. The only difference is no touch screen.

INF and HD graphic driver need to reinstall, Windows activation need to redo.
Additional driver need to install = Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Drive

hi guys, got this machine in an good offer, and proceed with the hardware upgrades (SSD and wireless)

also installed a fresh win8.1 copy (from my MSDN account)

i read in this thread that many people installed the win pro version, so i proceed as well, however, my windows copy dont get activated automagically..... was it supposed to happen? or only the core version will be activated with the BIOS key?

    thanks !!!

Okay, so I've had thei X202e for about a year now and I'm just about fed up with it. The touchpad has never worked right, even after upgrading the driver, trying the samsung driver etc. Sometimes whenever you go to select something (tap or right click) it is unresponsive. Wireless is another issue. It will just disconnect fr no reason. Sometimes you just have to disconnect and reconnect to the wireless network, sometimes it requires a reboot. If I look at system, devices it says not enough resources for device or something to that effect. This is the second one of these too. I sent the first one back last January about a month after I got it. Many of you seem pretty satisfied with these, so I have to believe I have a problem. If upgrading to a SSD and replacing the wireless card will fix this, I suppose I will go that route, but had I known I would have to upgrade this thing before it would work to my satisfaction I would have bought a better machine in the first place. Any suggestions appreciated

    Hey jjschult,

I've had the S202 version with the i3-3217U CPU. I had the same wireless issues as you had until I reinstalled Windows. It kept disconnecting and becoming unable to connect to anything until reboot as well.

In the summer I picked up an SSD drive from the sales and at the same time reinstalled Windows as well, which magically seems to have fixed my Wireless issues at least. I didn't switch the wireless card.

In addition to that there's still the throttling issues, but I'm also working on a fix (custom heatsink) for that. I'll let you know if I ever finish it :)

I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with for a custom heatsink!

I haven't had any wifi issues with the stock card, but I also installed a SSD and re-installed windows the next day so I don't know if there was any wifi issues originally? I have the S200E w/i3-3217-U and have had almost no issues, biggest complaint is battery life (sucks!) and the poorly designed CPU heatsink, for 90% of what I do I don't notice any throttling, but I know it is there...But for the price I paid (dirt cheap!) I am very happy with the size and preformance!

I just bought a q200e refurb unit from newegg for cheap, and it seems to be fine. Swapped out the HDD for an SSD and installed Ubuntu 13.10 with no issues. I seem to have a strange battery issue:

In windows 8, the OS reports no battery detected in the little icon at the bottom lef, whether plugged in to AC or not. However the laptop runs fine when disconnected from the wall. Since i am not a Win 8 expert, I used Ubuntu to get more battery info.

Under Ubuntu, the battery is always reported at 100% charge, whether plugged in or not. OS reports energy, energy when empty and energy when full all at 0Wh. Time to full and time to empty are 0 seconds.

Is this an issue with the battery detection or the battery itself? Since it's a refurb with only 90 day warranty, I don't have the luxury of waiting weeks to decide if it will fix itself.

    Any advice?

Not sure what wireless card your X202E came with, but my Q200E came with an Azurewave branded Atheros 2.4gHz only card that is for low end laptops, only rated for 150Mbps. I upgraded to an Intel 6235 dual band (2.4 and 5 gHz) card that does 300Mbps. I added one of the Tyco "flag" antennas to the second connector. My Q200E did not come with Bluetooth, but the 6235 card added it, all I had to do was install the Intel driver from their website. This card also enables WIDI (wireless display). For about $22 from Amazon, this was a no brainer.

I also put in a 250 gig Samsung 840 EVO SSD, using EaseUS ToDo Backup Free. I put the SSD in an external enclosure, allowed EaseUS ToDo to select the partition sizes, selected optimize for SSD's and let it go. When it was done, I took the SSD out of the enclosure, swapped it with the original harddrive, and I was done. No messing around, no activation problems, nothing. It just works. I used the Samsung Magician utility to optimize the SSD. It brought over all of the partitions, including the recovery.

I upgraded from WIndows 8 to 8.1 the day I got the computer. The touchpad hasn't bothered me, but I don't use multifinger much anyway.

The only thing I wish is that there were some Windows x32 drivers for this. I have some programs that will run fine in x32, but not in x64, period. Since this is limited to 4 gb memory, I wouldn't be giving up much with the 3.x GB cap on x32 Windows.. I installed Oracle VM Virtualbox and put 32 bit XP on that. It is much faster now that I have the SSD, but it is still a PITA. I wish Microsoft had continued the Virtual PC from WIndows 7 as that was much more convenient. It's funny, the latest tablets are running the x32 version of Windows 8.1 (I'm not talking about the RT tablets). I don't know why they put x64 on this.

    Jon

For those of you who got refurbished units, how are they, cosmetically? I'm most worried about them being like Dell Latitude refurbs, where they don't even bother to clean them up physically.

Newegg currently as the S200E (new) for $400, and I'm debating between this, a refurbished Q200E for $340 (same specs, minus the external optical), or waiting for a better deal (perhaps a different system?). I'm getting this for someone else (who isn't tech-savvy), but I will be installing a SSD and cleaning-installing 8.1. I expect the workload to be web, schoolwork, and some media consumption; I don't think he cares much about PC gaming. Any thoughts on this matter would be appreciated; thanks.

My Q200E was a refurb from Woot Moofi. Not a scratch on it, except for the Kensington lock area which was bent out. Other than that, I can't tell it from new.

I wouldn't bother doing a clean install. Not that much junk on the harddrive. They had reinstalled everything, so it came up like a brand new computer. They said they had wiped the recovery partition, but it was there. I think they just put in a one size fits all sheet with the computer.

All I got was the computer w/battery, and the charger. No manuals or anything else. As I said above, I upgraded to 8.1 the day I got it using Windows update.

Yeah, I'll post the results when I just find the time to get it done...I can abuse a local workshop for that but I just need to find the time.

I think I messed up the model number on my post, mine is S200E as well (not S202...).

As you say for most tasks you don't even notice the throttling, but if you try even light gaming the throttling will make you go mad. Otherwise this little laptop should handle some gaming too with the HD4000 GPU :)

Yep, not even an attempt at gaming for me on this laptop...
Strictly school work and general day to day tasks and for that it has been very good.
The size is great, I don't know if I ever could go back to a full size laptop after this one...

Like some of the previous posts I am also trying to locate a replacement digitizer for my S200E -- has anyone had any luck finding one yet?

I notice that you can buy replacement digitizers for X202E and Q200E from the US. I think that S200E is the European version of these laptops so do you think the digitizers will be the same? I don't think I can check the part numbers unless I remove the digitizer from the laptop. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hello,
few days ago I got an Asus S200E on cheap,it came with Intel Celeron B847 and 2g. ram.
The machine works fine, but to my surprise the CPU seems to run hot although it is supposed to be ultra voltage!!! during idle the temp. is (50-60 C) / load (82-89 C)
    Untitled.jpg
this way to high , even my Acer with i7 CPU is a lot cooler.
I opened the laptop and cleaned the fan, but there is very little improvement, anyway, my question is, did anyone have the same model please report their temp. and is there are anyone tried to repaste / mod the the heatsink???

    any aid is highly appreciated

Yes, heat with this series laptops is a known problem for just about all of them, under heavy useage throttling will happen at mild to severe levels, at mild levels most people won't notice it is happening.

If you look back a ways I posted temps with the i3 and my temps are better than what I lot of people have reported. For me I just don't have another fight in me, and for 90% of what I do I'm not affected...

    Here I found the post:

Hello, I'm looking into upgrading my Asus VIVO and wanted to see if anyone is using the Kingston SSDNow V300 drive? It's 7mm so I believe it should work fine. Does anyone know if I would need the Kingwin 2.5 Inch to 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Disk Drive Mounting Kit $6.99 ?

Also, is it pretty easy to install? I noticed on the first page of this thread a user mentioned how to pry the machine open to install the SSD. Sorry I haven't had time to review this whole thread to get caught up on what it takes to install the SSD.

This mechanical 5,400 drive is seriously slowing this system down. Takes way to long to launch apps in Win 8.

Also, any tips on how to clone this over while the SSD is external is appreciated.

    Thx for any/all help!

I'm running the 240GB V300 drive, lighting fast boot times, applications load quick, great upgrade, highly recommend it. It was pretty easy to install after you pry the back off, there are some good directions on how to open it up, I think I watched a youtube video before trying. You don't need an adapter bracket as the 5,400 rpm one is a 2.5" hard drive as well.

I would recommend doing a clean install on the new SSD.

Great! I should of known it's a 2.5 drive. Appreciate the feedback on this SSD and the install process! I found a pretty good BF deal on this SSD so I'd like to finally pull the trigger on this upgrade. I might try a fresh install but I'll need to look into where I can get the Windows 8 install disk since mine didn't come with one. I'm pretty sure they loaded it on a backup partition so I'll need to look into that.

any win8 HOME disk will work, before you pull the old drive do this.
there is a folder on your stock drive named esupport, it contains ALL of the Drivers for your machine and will install in the proper order and restart multiple times as needed. It does Not include the bloatware.
Copy that to a usb stick, swap drives is install win 8 . Then run the esupport setup.

Hi, I don't have any copy of Windows 8 Home Edition. My windows 8 is the standard home edition that came pre-installed on my asus x202e.It's good to know I can install all the tablet drivers from the esupport folder in the event I buy or find a copy of windows 8 to install fresh. I had a 90 day trail version of Windows 8 ISO a long time ago I was using at work on VM machine. I don't think I have the ISO anymore though.

I was going to try and use Norton Ghost 15 since I own that but I saw a thread in Norton community mentioning it doesn't support UEFI / Windows 8 apparently. I haven't tried installing or using it on my asus so not sure.

I found this guys post that states he used Ghost 11.5 to backup Windows 8 in native EFI/UEFI mode using ghost. Not sure If I'll try this since it seems rather cumbersome.

Imaging an EFI/UEFI System with Windows 8 and Symantec Ghost from USB. | Symantec Connect Community

I'll probably just buy True Image 2013 by Acronis since it's supported with Windows 8 UEFI. My friend at work is going to let me borrow a USB/Sata III Cable to attach my SSD externally.

Here's a link to some Acronis instructions Windows 8 SSD cloning.

How To Create A Ghost Windows 8 System Backup Image Easily

I still need to research a dual boot with Ubuntu Unity Desktop and Windows 8. I'm not sure if you can dual boot with UEFI enabled. So, I still need to look into those options as well. I think you might need to disable UEFI and Secure boot to allow a dual boot Grub Boot manager to work correctly. At least that's what I had to do to allow me to boot off my USB stick that has multiple Linux bootable OS's installed. Otherwise it wouldn't boot off the USB stick.

Either way, I hope to get this system where I want it. My SSD should arrive soon!

I'd also like to replace the my Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter since I only get 70 Mbps/s out of this adapter. Does anyone have any suggestions on which one to replace with and how easy it is to swap it out?

    Thanks again, Chris

Also, is this an easy install? It looks like it's just two screws and possibly a driver install. Thanks for any tips!

I'm getting ready to clone my Windows 8 over to my SSD soon. I'm hoping to get mine setup for dual boot with Ubuntu and Win 8.1. I think I have the info I need to get this working.

Got my x202e today, refurbished from Amazon for $320 total. So far everything seems working fine; I am upgrading to 8.1 right now.

So, basically, I am wondering about battery life. It's taking a damn good while to charge up, and I intend to use this as a writing platform in airplanes and carry it around with me. Assuming I stick to word processing and regular web browsing, how much battery life should I expect? Any tips to maximize battery life?

Also, anyone know of a good, inexpesive case to carry this around? Thanks

Battery life is probably my biggest complaint, its pretty poor, I get 2.5 to 3 hours, most of the time closer to the 2.5 hour mark and that is with a SSD installed...

I have been using a very compact Timbuk2 case w/shoulder strap and like it a lot...so light and small...

I am probably getting around 3.5, but with very low brightness, and power saver; doing little to no multimedia at all. So yes, this is actually a big hurdle in an otherwise astonishingly good deal (I almost got this new for $240, which would have been a downright crazy steal imo; $320 was still pretty damn good).

Anyway, I know this is a total reach, but any chance ASUS will develop a 'better' battery to eventually make it possible to replace it internally? Otherwise I'm very, very happy, but it just seems like a huge mistake to make battery life suffer so much, considering how damn competent everything is.

I sometimes break the 3 hour mark but not often, it would be nice to even see even an aftermarket batter that would offer longer life, as I agree for the most part this has been a great portable computer! I got a like new display model from staples when they were on clearance for around $100 after coupons, rebates and ink rewards :)

Jesus that is a sweet deal!

As for an aftermarket battery, I really, really hope something like that is manufactured. With an additional 2.5h of battery life this little thing would be pretty much perfect. Is it possible, and dare I ask, likely? You would think ASUS would want to ameliorate for this, or else someone else would capitalize for it.

Incidentally, I have been considering that if the battery life simply becomes too much of an issue within the next few weeks of testing, I might return the unit and try to score a deal for a t100 transformer tablet instead.

Do you guys have any idea of how that would perform next to this? Clearly the battery is better, as is the display. It has less RAM, and very little disk space. I don't really know much about the processor comparison, but I would assume the i3 would be superior? Still, if I am going to be going on power saver to try to get barely 3 hours out of this, it might compensate.

Mostly, I am concerned about the keyboard-trackpad for the t100 unit, and whether it won't be comfortable enough for typing extensively in word documents.

    Any insight into this quandary?

Thank you very much. As far as the x202e's battery is concerned, forgive me for a naive question, but is there any reallistic shot of an aftermarket replacement battery that ameliorates for this? it's so close to perfection I am grinding my teeth!

I've not seen replacement batteries but you can buy a power pad to have under the laptop... Example: Untitled Page

That seems tempting on first glance, but then you see it weighs 2 pounds, which bumps the whole ordeal to about 5.2 pounds. Sort of defeats the purpose of having an ultra portable laptop for me, alas.

I take it there are no replacement batteries atm; any chance there will be?

I found this, but it is not genuine and higher capacity 5100 mAh vs. genuine 3800 mAh, did anyone tried to replace the battery?? and how long it last??

I too would be interested in the results if someone had tried this battery?
It's a noticeable step above the stock battery...

I'm confused. Did these things come with different sized batteries? This review, Asus VivoBook X202 Review - Notebook Reviews by MobileTechReview says they came originally with 5136 mah batteries.

    BTW, ebay has the 5136 batteries in the $45 range. Genuine Asus Q200E BHI3T45 Li ion Battery C2 Battery 7 4V 5136mAh 38WH C21 X202 | eBay
