That happen on my other win 8 laptop also.

Go to device manager and choose your wireless device which would be the Atheros. Click properties>power management>disable the allow windows to turn off this device to save power(or something like that).

    Hi everyone.

I've been having a very specific problem with my x202 model and I'm wondering if anyone here can help.

In a nutshell, sometimes, about 5 minutes after waking from sleep, it will simply turn off. No bluescreen, no "windows is shutting down" routine, just off. It happens even though the battery is fully charged and it's plugged in. It occurs very randomly. No problem for weeks at a time and then one day it just happens.

While researching the problem I found that the exact issue is not uncommon for zenbook users, as described in this blog post: The Technologically Inclined Theologian: Zenbook Prime and the Unexpected Shutdown Problem

    Has anyone else experienced this?

I did end up replacing the original and that did not fix the problem. However... I found something that did!

For some reason, the third party AC adapter I've been using was the cause of the problem! Of all the damn things... I was browsing a forum, and someone mentioned that their AC adapter caused mouse jitters. Desperate for a solution, I unplugged the third party AC adapter (iTekiro, from Amazon if anyone cares) and sure enough, running on the battery, the touchpad behaved perfectly. I plug in the original ASUS AC adapter, touchpad still works perfectly. I plug in the iTekiro adapter, touchpad gets the jitters. I plug in the ASUS AC adapter, jitters go away. Repeat this about 5 times, and it is very clear that the AC adapter by iTekiro causing the problem of the mouse jitters.

I take back all the bad things I said about ASUS. I highly recommend people do not use iTekiro AC adapters.

I picked up 3 S200E for the family. I need to make recovery disks. Will I need to make 3 sets of recovery disks (one for each laptop) or do you think I'll be fine with one set for all three?

I remember with Dell, the disks used to be interchangeable as long as it was the same model. Thanks.

Hi all, I'm new to this owner's lounge. I had a quick question I couldn't find an answer to. (Apologies: I haven't searched entirely through this thread, so I apologize if this has already come up). I purchased the Q200E yesterday and ran the ASUS updater and now the touchscreen is no longer working. Is there a way to enable/disable it? I don't know if I accidentally disabled it somewhere.

Looking at the OP, I noticed the Q200e is said to have a 2nd generation I3. I picked one up yesterday and although I haven't opened it yet, the store tag and box state i3-3217U which is a 3rd gen. Any thoughts on what else may be different from someone who recently bought from Best Buy?

Does the WIDI replacement also work for the S200? I noticed it only comes with one cable and the Intel replacement comes with 2 cables. How would that work? Thanks.

I have the S200 and replaced the wifi card with the Intel 6235. I found out that the S200 only has one antenna wire. Connecting it to the main antenna input allows wireless G and N to work but not bluetooth. Also Widi would not connect and I wasted way too much time. The same Netgear Push2TV2000 connected to my other win8 and win7 laptop just fine.

If I put the antenna into the AUX connection on the card, bluetooth works, wireless N works, but wireless G(my network) does not work, very low signal. So I couldn't test Widi under wireless N. I wonder if you can just split the single antenna or just short the Main and Aux connection together. I am just going to send the 6235 back to Amazon and pick up the 6205 since I know for a fact that it works with windows 8 and Widi. Bluetooth is not a big deal to me on the laptop.

    Hi,
I have a question about Asus VivoBook specs. On Asus website it's said that the i3 processor is the maximum for VivoBook S200 and S200E. At the same time I found several retailers selling Asus VivoBook S200 and S200E with i5 (at least, that's what they claim). Is it possible? Are there S200 or S200E models with i5?

    Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, there are no S200 / S200E models with i5 processors. :-( When/if ASUS makes one they will give it a different product number. Here is a breakdown of the current S200E/X202E/S200E model line:

    Source: X202E/S200E SSD upgrade instructions

and it looks like you already checked out https://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/

No go with the 6205. It will connect with wireless N network but not wireless G. Mine is wireless G but I do have Brighthouse network hotspot that bleeds thru to my building and that is showing wireless N. It doesn't matter if I connect the antenna to port 1 or port 2. The single antenna on the S200 is really handicapping most intel wireless card. I put back the 6235 and it will connect to both G and N network again.

I ordered a Tyco antenna ebay for about $4. I am just going to tape the bluetooth antenna to the SSD and see if I can get bluetooth and Widi to work. I am not going to run it behind the LCD, too much work. I suspect Widi needs two antennas to work since my other two laptops has a black and white antenna and Widi does not work when I disconnect the white wire.

Has anyone got Widi to work with Asus 200e with a single antenna?

Here is a photo of how I added an extra wifi antenna, which is similar to what you are planning:
Add an additional wifi/bluetooth antenna to the S200E/Q200E
So far it works much better than the existing wifi card and not running it behind the LCD seems to be just fine for reception,I think you will have good success with widi! :)

Hey thanks for the pic. I am just going to curl it up and tape it to the Kingston SSD. I see you have it over the foam and partially on the battery. I'll try that if my lazy route doesn't work.

Gotta love the 5 secs hybrid shutdown boot time on this laptop, especially since it's $500+tax(and that is including a Kingston 256GB SSD). Even on the HDD boot time was only 10 secs but laptop was sluggish.

Ok, got the antenna put in. Bluetooth works from 20ft away and bluetooth file transfer works just fine so antenna is good. WiDi finally work but that is only after I installed the latest VGA drivers from ASUS site. I did not read closely enough when I ran the Intel utility and it told me to check the manufacturer website since it could not determine that it is the latest one since it was a customized driver. Asus Live Update missed it, windows device manager update missed it also.

Version V9.17.10.2875.01 from the VGA driver from the ASUS website is what you need. Now WiDi and BT works on the Asus S200E after a $4 Tyco antenna and HD4000 update.

Now I am wondering if it will work with just one main antenna but I am done opening the laptop up,

Hello, I have been using the Vivobook s200e for a few months now and love it. I just have one complaint though. Is there anyway to disable the fn key on this model. For example, when trying to put the laptop to sleep, I have to hold down the fn key and then press f2. Is there anyway to simplify this by pressing only one button?

Thanks everyone for all of the useful info on this thread. I do have one question though that i can't find any info on, i am thinking of buying the s200e and would like to connect it to a surround amp and get the picture through output thru my video canon via the HDMI port. I am just wondering if anyone has tried this and if so, what the picture quality is like? It would mainly be used for streaming from either internet or a NAS device using either wired or wireless.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I've tested sandybridge and ivybridge laptop hdmi output to an AV reciever and directly to TV. You can get 5.1 audio or even 7.1 audio thru the HDMI port. Picture and sound is fantastic. Interesting enough. multi channel surround sound also works via WiDi.

It's hard to find a case that fits this little laptop. The Case logic 11.6 clamshell is too small and the 13.3 is too big. The neoprene case do not have much drop protection.
Then I saw my wife's work folder. I'm sure you can pick up something like this at Office Depot or Staples. The fit and drop protection is surprisingly good:

Now after you tucked it underneath, it is held pretty tight:

The recessed zipper gives excellent drop protection.

It bulges out a little bit if you add the charger to the inside compartment:

The best part is that if you don't add the ac adapter, you can keep a pretty low profile. It doesn't look like a laptop case so hopefully it is less likely to be stolen. The bad is that there is no handle.

I had a q200e purchased at best buy having the same issue. I took it in because it was still in the return policy. They said it was due to a bad battery and was a known issue. They were going to send it out to have a new battery put in at one of their geek squad warehouses. However, since I was still within the return policy I just returned it and purchased another one.

The Q200e that had the 2nd gen I3 at best buy is now at the end of the life cycle so they are selling the q200e with the 3rd gen I3 now.

I purchased the X202E for my wife and I replaced the HD with a 500GB SSD.. did the bit-for-bit copy so that the restore partition would not be messed with. She's been happy with it but twice now the touchscreen has just stopped working.

The first time it stopped working was before I replaced the HD with the SSD. I did a bios update and then touchscreen started working again. Then I replaced the HD with SSD and things were fine for weeks... then the touchscreen just stopped working again.

The touchpad works fine... even all the gestures work fine... just the darn touchscreen. Anyone had this issue... know a solution? On with support now and they are having me do a system restore to a time where it was working...

OK... hope this helps others... the system restore that too waaaay too long... did the trick. After it finally came back the touchscreen was working again. The only drawback was that any app that had been updated were not working. I had to get and run the "Modern UI App troubleshooter"... then after a reboot I was able to update the apps via the Store and now everything is working fine again.... we'll see how long this time.

Well I've had my ASUS for about 3-4 weeks, its a great size, enough power for my need, battery life could be longer, but I got it for a deal at staples. Overall I'm very happy carrying this everyday as before I had a Dell 15.6" laptop that was like a bag of bricks. The touchscreen was a novelty for the first day or so, but since then I have barely touched it...Oh, I also installed Classic Shell and have by passed the metro interface, like it much better now...

    Couple of questions...
First, I installed a 256GB SSD, boot times are lighting fast, programs load in a snap, but I ended up doing a clean install of Windows 8, I've got everything running, BUT under Device Manager I still have some things that need drivers: 1) PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller 2) 6 or 7 Unknown device. Is there anyway to tell which drivers I need, instead of just randomly installing various ASUS drivers?

Second, my microphone doesn't seem to work (unfortunately I never tried it before installing the SSD, under the device manager is has: "Microphone (2-High Definition Audio Device), so it looks like it has a driver. In skype if I tap on the mic area they can hear some static and garbled noise. Could this be a driver issue or do I have a bad mic? Any thoughts would be great. Could someone look at their computer under Device Manager and see what the audio input is labeled as?

Other thing I've noticed is it seems to run quite warm generally mid 60s to mid 70s Celsius and with intensive tasks it gets HOT, I've seen it peak at 87C that's hotter than I would like it (not to the touch, but if I monitor the CPU temps).

Quick Question for owners of the X202e. I'm not able to make my laptop discoverable to other devices. I CAN connect by making the computer find the other device, but not vice versa. When I click on the Bluetooth icon in the system tray, the "allow a device to connect" item grayed out. There is a settings menu that brings up a new menu with a check box to activate this feature, but it did not work even after the box was checked. ASUS support has been totally useless. I'd really like to know if this problem is limited to my unit, Would you mind checking yours and reporting back? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Here is a list of drivers that weren't included in Windows 8 that I had to manually install for my S200E after a fresh installation to SSD:

    ATK Package
    Audio VIA
    Cardreader Alcor
    Chipset Intel
    DPTF Intel
    KBFilter
    SmartGesture
    WirelessRadioControl

This list is probably similar to X202E owners, they would probably just need a bluetooth driver on top of this.

Regarding the microphone, try using the VIA driver instead of the generic audio driver that comes with Windows 8 and see if that helps.

Regarding temperatures, mine too idles very warm 69C as I am writing this, it is only about ~24C/75ish in my room. I have seen mine reach high 80's running (testing) 3D games. It does make me slightly worried, but less so now that I know I'm not the only one with temperatures that high lol.

Hi Guys. New Q200E owner here. On the box it says the ram is DDR3 1333 4G(ON BD.)

So does that mean the RAM chip is "on board" and so, cannot be replaced or upgraded?

I wanted to give some input to extend on this very good post. I followed the instructions and was able to swap an SSD using the recovery key. Thank you very much. I think I found a way to prep the new SSD with the proper GPT partition scheme. this is why it will not reload the system unless the win8 enterprise edition has been installed. By prepping the drive, it should avoid the need to have to use the win8 enterprise install. the source for the information is at: Sample: Configure UEFI/GPT-Based Hard Drive Partitions by Using Windows PE and DiskPart.
the page linked above describe how to prep a disk to receive a windows 8 image for system builder using "Diskpart" which is the command line partitioning tool in win7 and win8. the instruction are for people using win PE but our recovery stick has win RE which include "Diskpart" at the command prompt. the command to input in disk part are as follow.

    select disk 0
    clean
    convert gpt
    create partition primary size=300
format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows RE tools"
    assign letter="T"
    create partition efi size=260
    format quick fs=fat32 label="System"
    assign letter="S"
    create partition msr size=128
    create partition primary
    format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows"
    assign letter="W"

This will create the partition structure on your new drive and allow the recovery stick to work.

Thanks for this post. This will make it quicker to swap SSD. A variation on this method will probably also work on Lenovo laptop or most win8 laptop that has the option to create recovery USB disk.

Yes you are correct the 4GB is soldered on so it can not be upgraded.

I've done some searching on this and came up empty handed so maybe someone here has a suggestion. I cannot create system restore disc's on my external DVD drive. It's an HP Lightscribe and it works just fine. The Q200E see's and will use the drive for everything EXCEPT creating the recovery disc's. During the recovery disc create process it only shows c:\OS as available drive. I've looked through control panel, device manager, everything. What am I missing?

Rats. Well, if you have a suggestion on one that works well for you let me know. I got it to work using my 16gb Sandisk thumb drive but I don't like tying it up for just that. I was able to create a system repair disk using windows control panel. Now I'm running the create system image. It will take 10 DVD's but that's ok. Just hope this works.

Any way to suppress the on screen keyboard from popping up when I touch the screen?

I just bought an S200E and am getting my first taste of Windows 8. Generally, I'm enjoying the combination of a touch screen and keyboard with Windows 8, but I find the on screen keyboard popping up when I touch a text field on the screen to be extremely annoying. I have a hardware keyboard and don't need the on screen one. Is there any way to turn the on screen keyboard off?

I received my Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 today. Installed it and it is working great. Thanks for the heads-up on this upgrade. I installed a Samsung 840 SSD a couple of weeks ago. It is an excellent and fast SSD.

I'm glad to see you're all satisfied with your Q200's and X202's, however I have had nothing but frustrations with mine...

I want to start off by saying I am technologically savvy. I have been building custom computer systems since 2008 and currently own an X79 based desktop system that I custom built.

Anyways, I recently purchased a Q200E VivoBook from my local Best Buy. Upon opening it, I realized there where white "dots" stuck between the touch screen. When I turned on the system, they appeared black, similar to dead pixels. So I took my VivoBook into Best Buy for a replacement. My replacement had a similar problem, however rather than containing white "dots" between the screen, this one contained a scratch between the glass touch screen and the actual screen. It also had several dead pixels upon turning it on. So I then went and returned mine AGAIN! My next replacement had a PLETHORA of air bubbles between the two screens. I reluctantly went to my Best Buy AGAINNNN and got a replacement today. MY REPLACEMENT HAS HAIRS BETWEEN THE TWO SCREENS. HAIRS! It also has LARGE scratches on the top aluminum lid. They are not brush marks.

I am fed up and thinking about simply returning my VivoBook and waiting until something with a mobile Haswell processor is released. At this point I am EMBARRASSED to return these, because I have LITERALLY returned them over 5 TIMES.

Hello. I picked up a Q200E from Best Buy a bit back when they were taking $100 off all touchscreen Windows 8 machines. It's a great device, especially for the price! I could use an extra charge cable, though, and I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on one they'd bought. As the post above states, Asus carries the OEM one, but it's pricey (~$50 which is 1/8th the price of the laptop!) and currently out of stock. There's a number of them on eBay and Amazon that seem to work with this model in the $10-20 range, though, but I really don't want to order a dud. Any recommendations?
