    Reserved for Mods/Upgrades.

    WiDi (Wireless Display):
For around $20-25 you can purchase an Intel Advanced-N 6235 dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi/Bluetooth 4.0 half mini-PCI Card and replace the default card that comes with the machine and enable Intel Wireless Display (WiDi).

    SSD Upgrade:
    Best upgrade option:
For around $300-350, you can get a Samsung 840 500GB SSD drive and clone the existing disk using your favorite cloning software that supports GPT partitions (like Miray HDClone). This will preserve the System Restore partition as well as maintain UEFI SecureBoot.

Great Tips. A quick question, does the warranty gets voided if you open up and upgrade to SSD and WiDi? I would like to purchase this in a store that does the upgrade for me (preferably free). Any suggestions? Frys?

I'm very happy with my new x200e. Not had it long enough to get a good sense of realworld battery life yet.
Anyone know of anyone making bespoke cases yet?

    Thanks

I don't think the warranty gets voided. There are no warranty seals. I got my SSD at Fry's and did it myself. I know Fry's will do it for a cost, not free. I think it's $39 or $49 for the upgrade and they don't do hard disk cloning.

I get 4.5 to 5 hours with my brightness near low. Also I'm running on an SSD instead of the built-in hard disk.

Ok I finally replaced the HDD with an SSD. In order to open the case I took a plastic paint scraper about 1 inch wide and in back between the hinge I pulled the bottom enough that you can see the bottom just starting to come away. I pushed the scraper in gently to open it up. I then took a flat headed screw driver and slid it along the opening until it encounter a plastic snap and twisted it sides to pop the snap. There are 5 or six of these snaps along the back. I had to use way more force than I was comfortable with in order to snap this open. Not a great picture but you will get the ideal.

    Small Optimized Open Back.jpg

    Small Optimized Open Back2.jpg

Once this was done I put in a crucial M4 that I had to remove the space from and shorten the screws to make 7mm. I pulled the plasitic tab with the two foam strips off the HDD and used them on the SSD.

Then I upgraded to Win8 pro. (Before removing the old drive I ran the Windows 8 upgrade program in Windows 7 compatibility mode in order for it to give me the $39.99 windows 8 pro upgrade.

The upgrade would not install on a blank drive so I download a version of windows 8 pro that would run in a 30 day trial and install without a key(Google it). I installed this version on the new SSD. (I guess I also could have try the orginals 8 recovery but I already had the win8 trial available. I than updated this version of windows 8 pro to the download version of window 8 pro that I purchased from Microsoft and then applied the Free Media center key so that I can watch TV program from my main Media center computer.

I found getting into the bios and getting it to select the boot drive a challenge but this set of instructions helped a lot.

In order to get the boot prompt up you must do the following:

    1. Enter the BIOS setup menu by pressing and holding F2 key when powering on.
    2. Switch to “Boot” and set “Launch CSM” to Enabled.
    3. Switch to “Security” and set “Secure Boot Control” to Disabled.
    4. Press F10 to save and exit.
    5. Press and hold ESC key to lunch boot menu when the notebook restarts

After the install there were a bunch of devices missing in Device Manager and I had to install the following drivers off of the ASUS Support website:

    ATKPackage_ASUS_Win7_8_VER100026
    Bluetooth_Atheros_Win8_64_Z800206
    CardReader_Alcor_Win8_64_Z3411701527
    DPTF_Intel_Z6061082
    SmartGesture_ASUS_Win7_8_VER1036
    USBchargerplus_ASUS_Win7_8_VER215
    WirelessRadioControl_Win8_64_Z1001

Everything is working fine and I am so far pleased with the performance of the X202E...

I bought a Q200E last weekend at the local Bestbuy. Not a bad little notebook and a great replacement for my Dell 11z. I was a little dismayed by the fact of soldered RAM and only single channel but it benches MUCH faster than my 11z. Now I need to get the courage up to pop it open swap the HDD over and see if I can clean the TIM off and apply something better. It seems the run a little warm IMO.

Does anyone know how to get middle click by using two finger click? By default this brings up context menu(i.e. right click). I didn't see any option to change it to middle click.

Here's a small tip I found about the battery settings. I uninstalled Asus's Power4Ege and use Win8's built-in power management. It will always switch back High Performance if you try to set it to Balanced. To solve this, you need to rename/remove c:\windows\PowerSkin\PowerSkin.exe and reboot. Then you can set whatever power options.

I haven't played at all with the default drivers, but from the slickdeals thread detailing the purchase of my S200E for $400, they posted a link to the Samsung Series 5 driver for the touchpad:

    https://mega.co.nz/#!KANTGYQQ!McLjLwLz0bxVQu7zY0vmS1BVNqMOH6lyaWXBijarmGs

Works great--you can do your middle click change, all of the touch screen gestures can be replicated, three finger gestures including browser back/forward, bringing up desktop or My Computer, task switcher, etc. Big fan of the touchpad on this thing, not sure how well it works with the default drivers.

I bought the S200e at Staples on Saturday for $400, plus a Kingston v300 120GB for $85 after coupon in the same transaction. Loving this little thing! I am considering swapping the wifi card for the 6235AN.HMWWB or the one mentioned in an earlier post, though--haven't had any real wireless issues yet, but I'd love to be able to use the 5ghz band and have a nice reliable card in there.

Hey guys, owner of a S200E here. I just replaced the hard drive with an 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD, and used Acronis 2013 TrueImage to clone the drive.

The system will boot and seems to operate just fine, unless I try to access the Windows recovery environment by pressing F9 during boot. Doing this causes the machine to fail, catastrophically.

I get a blue screen telling me- paraphrasing- Windows could not load because a certain resource is not found. It also says, "\Windows\System32\winload.efi is either corrupted or missing" and it lists an error code: 0xc0000225. The machine gives me 3 options: 1) push enter to try again (screen flashes, does nothing), 2) Press F8 for startup settings (screen flashes, does nothing) and the third option takes me to the bios (which is version 2.05).

At this point, if I try to power down the system, and boot it again, I get the same error message. Using a Windows 8 recovery cd, I try to restore the system to factory defaults and it tells me it cannot locate the recovery partition. My only option it seems is to connected the old HDD via usb, and use acronis to clone the contents back to the SSD.

I wouldn't mind this so much if I didn't feel overly paranoid that I might accidentally fat finger the F9 key on bootup one day, and lose everything on the SSD. I might be able to live with this reality if it weren't for the wasted space on my HDD for the recovery and restore partitions.

Any ideas about how to fix this are appreciated.

TL/DR: I can't get the Window's recovery environment (pressing F9 during bootup) to work after cloning the contents of the HDD to an SSD, and attempting to use this mechanism causes irreparable damage to the file system.

I did a 1:1 clone on to a Samsung 840 500GB drive. I don't have issues with recovery. Maybe there was a problem resizing the partition copying down to a smaller drive.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I suspect there is an issue with resizing the partition as the hdd included with the S200E is 500gb, and the ssd in question is 256gb. Unfortunately, I do not have the disposable income to purchase a larger ssd.

I was tinkering with it more this morning, and I did manage to succssfully access the recovery partition. I booted from the Win8 recovery DVD I made, and successfully resetted the system to factory settings. However, when I rebooted and tried using F9 again, system gave me same error from previous post- and subsequently ruined the file system(unable to boot, recover, etc). It seems as if windows can see and use the recovery partitions, but the f9 recovery mechanism cannot.

    Hi everybody.

Bought a Q200E-BHI3T45 at BestBuy a couple of weeks ago and found it the best cost-benefit light laptop to my kid at university. Last week, despite the very low use it had during kid's vacations, it presented a problem with the touch screen. Immediately after it's turned on the screen shows a circle as if a finger were pressing the screen near its middle. Computer cannot be used because focus goes to that point regardless what you do, like pressing keys or touching other parts of the screen. Does anybody else heard something like this? An internet search gave me nothing, looks like the computer is really good, except mine... :twitchy:
    Thanks!

    Br, Carlos

I have recently bought a s200e and after installing a windows
Upgrade once I start up the book, after the sign in
All I get is a grey screen with no image. Is this a
Common fault? Anyone else experienced this?

New owner here with an S200e from the Staples deal. Nice little machine. Hopefully this thread will grow.

I have a 250GB Samsung SSD on it's way, so I'm interested in the most efficient way to get that loaded and installed.

My WiFi has been flaky sometimes, dropping my home connection - so I may have to look into a more reliable card to.

I bought the S200E from staples this weekend and was generally impressed. I tried out surfing the web, watching videos from wireless NAS, and light office work and it seems decently cut out for these. However, it gave the impression of struggling on some graphic-heavy web pages, and launching programs is noticeably slow.

Here are some questions for the group:
    1. Can anyone share what wireless throughputs they are getting on the local network via wifi, say for copying 1+ GB files? I'm getting 4.5 megabytes/sec from both my gigabit nas and a linux media server.

    2. It has been noted the X202e has 2 antennas but the S200e only one. This rules out a 5 ghz upgrade. However antennas can be purchased online. Any thoughts on wiring in your own antennas? From someone who has had this open, do the antennas route into the screen, where they are shielded by metal anyway? (I'm loathe to open it up while still in return period)

    3. What are app load times like after SSD installation?

LOL - I came here to specifically ask the antenna question. And I also have a Samsung 840 250gb SSD on its way.

I'm fine with my wireless performance, but it has flaked out on me a few times - often enough to not be something random. Loses connection, then shows no networks whatsoever. Eventually it comes back, or a reboot fixes it. So I'm wondering if I need to upgrade the card to something better/more reliable. If I go dual band (which I probably don't care about), do I then need to route an antenna too for 5GHz? Makes me wish I had the X202e instead with its dual band card . (vs. the DVD burner with this one).

    Hello,

Im having the same 225 error, I think my partition table is corrupt, maybe due to a failing disk. Im trying to recover my data using a linux live cd and testdisk. Im wondering if someone can post the factory partition details for the q200e. Partitions types and starting and ending blocks so that I can rebuild the partition table with minimal data loss. I dont need to be able to boot inot it, just ant to recover my data.

    Thank You!

Hey everybody. First time poster, and I just bought my X200E from Staples with the included external DVDRW drive. With that being said, I had a few questions, namely about accessories such as cases and bags and such where size has to be taken into consideration considering the size of this thing.

I noticed that while using the Vivobook that it can get warm in bed. Any suggestions for a good lap desk that is not too pricey and small enougg for just the Vivobook? All the ones I find are way too big and are made for 15.6" and up laptops.

Cases. I am in school, so what I was thinking was getting a sleeve that fits the laptop that is nicely padded but not too thick either and stick it into my backpack... like a Swissgear backpack or something. Any suggestions for maybe a nice sleeve, or small bag? I had a SOLO brand case for a old netbook I used to own which fit the netbook, external dvd drive, and power cord perfectly. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

    Technical questions...

    1. Is the X200E considered a netbook? With it's specs rivaling even your basic 15.6" laptops it's hard for me to call it a netbook, but the size of it is about the size of my old Aspire One netbook.

    2. Anyone have problems with the power saving options? Everytime I would select Power Saver, or Balanced the computer would automatically select High Performance. I uninstalled the Power4Gear software and it kept happening. Was really annoying so ended up reinstalling Power4Gearand am now just using the Power Options related to Power4Gear instead like "Power4Gear Battery Saver," and Power4Gear Balanced." Any way to stop this? It's really annoying.

    3. I heard that there was a possible update for the Vivobook which ends up throttling back the CPU to 1.3GHz so I am hesitant to apply any updates. Any thoughts on that and/or suggestions or tweaks to improve performance? I am wanting a SSD really bad.

Thanks for any additional info or comments!!!

Also a first-time poster. I am having the same problem with my power plans. I can only use the Power4Gear High Performance or the standard High Performance profiles. Any other one (including the Power4Gear Battery Saver plan) will immediately make it change to the standard Windows 8 High Performance plan. I've seen a couple other posts on other website forums from people with Asus touch-screen laptops having the same problem, which makes me think it's a driver issue on their side.. I'm really hoping it gets fixed soon. If anybody has any advice I'd love to hear it.

PS I bought mine on Amazon and got a sleeve with it, it's a $12 Case Logic sleeve for 11.6' laptops/netbooks. The Asus vivobooks are slightly wider and slightly shorter so it doesn't fit perfectly, but it does feel like it protects it well. However, it has no pockets.

Is anyone else having problems with the touch pad? It will lock up while using a program, it wont let me click anything, yet the mouse wont disappear, but I won't be able to click next or scroll. I have to close the window from the toolbar and restart the program.

Ok so I just ordered mine online from amazon for 429.99 I want to put In a ssd. Does it have to be a 7mm, or can I just get any 2.5 ssd and swap it out. Also did anyone notice better battery life with an ssd I vs an hdd? The only 7mm I saw we're he crucial m4's, I would rather get a different brand. I am hoping to get the cheapest 256gb ssd I can that is steal reasonably new.

And I noticed something very odd on the bestbuy website, not sure if this is a glitch but it lists a model of the vivobook x202e with a backlit keyboard
    Asus - VivoBook X-Series 11.6" Touch-Screen Laptop - 4GB Memory - 500GB Hard Drive - X202E-DH31T - Best Buy

    Thanks!

    Amazon.com: Crucial m4 256GB 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT256M4SSD2: Electronics

the gskill is like 500 mb/s write and 3 watts active
the crucial is 250mb/s write and .16 watts active
also to note the samgsung 840 is .05 watts or something active but uses tripple instead of dual

would the crucial really make that much of a difference for battery, and would i be able to fully use the gskills perfeormance ( does the laptop suppoort sata 6gb/s?)

thanks, if you have a better ssd in mind let me know

When I spoke with Asus tech support (who btw were very helpful, spoke good American English so helpcenter in this country; and didn't take long to get someone) about another matter, I told him I was planning to swap out the SSD. He said I coukld do this, but then the warrantry would be voided.

I bought the Q200 and had it for a month to evaluate. I returned it because I found out it had the second gen i3 with the slower HD3000 GPU.
I was pretty happy with it (though I'd get a matte screen cover to reduce the awful reflective glass) and think I'd get the "S" so I'd get the dvd drive.
My question concerns the fan noise. I did not notice it at all even when running 20 some windows and hd videos. Many people have commented on the Amazon X202 board that that model makes noticeable noise. I wonder if people on this forum have noticed it- particularly those with the "S"?

it worked. i put a 840 250gb in. i took the sides of the hdd and attached to the ssd and kept the tape and stuff on the hdd incase i needed to put it back in for a warrenty thing. i booted from a 32gb usb with regular windows 8 on it (file system was ntfs, fat32 was not needed). i also installed all the drivers post number 9 said on page one. i put pictures for future reference.

there is a folder on your stock drive named esupport, it contains ALL of the Drivers for your machine and will install in the proper order and restart multiple times as needed. It does Not include the bloatware.

It's really one drive with two partitions. I believe it's done so people can use the c for os and d for media since the d part tend to be records the middle of the discs thus having a slower read/write, if you want you can make it all one partition using disk management.

I used Macrium reflect and clone partition 1,2,3,4(OS),5, but not 6(data) and more importantly not partition 7 which had the recovery portion on. (If you guys want to try this, try, cloing 1,2,3,4, and 7 and see if f9 still works.) Sure enough, it booted fine on the Kingston 240GB SSD. Next time I boot I press f9 and the entire SSD crash and windows 8 can't repair it. I saw another guy use easeus and shrank and move partitions untill it is smaller than the target SSD and then use system image to create and move the image back on to the SSD. I did not try that since I want to leave the original HDD alone.

Here is a solution that should work for you guys using the full recovery USB drive that you made. First run windows activation and note the last 5 digits/letter of the product key that is embedded in the bios.

The recovery USB stick that you made from the recovery partition will not restore your system back to it's original state if you put in a blank SSD or HDD. But it will work if you have an existing UEFI installed windows 8.

    1. Create recovery drive from the recovery partitition. I think you need at least 16gb, I had a 32GB lying around.

    2. Download the 90 days enterprise evaluation copy of windows 8.

    3. Create a UEFI bootable USB stick(4GB is enough). Use 7-zip and extract the windows 8 evaluation iso to that UEFI bootable USB stick. Do not use windows 7 usb DVD download tool. That will create a non UEFI bootable windows installation stick NTFS format.

    4. Do not disable UEFI boot, another word, do not enable CSM(compatible service mode AKA legacy BIOS mode). You can leave secure boot on. The only thing to disable is fast boot. Install the SSD, go into bios screen and select the UEFI windows 8 evaluation USB as the first device and install it on the SSD.

    5. After Windows finish installing the evaluation version, power down and remove the SSD and put it in a portable enclosure.

    6. Put in the original HDD, connect the now external SSD, and FORMAT the SSD, yes the partition that you just put the evaluation version on. More on this later.

    7. Power down, swap out the HDD for the SSD, plug in the recovery USB stick that you made in step 1, go into bios and make sure that it is the first boot device. Again make sure you are under UEFI mode which means CSM is disabled.

    8. Let windows 8 reset the PC, no need for lengthy full clean option. It should work this time. I know it does not work on a blank SSD but should work on and SSD that had a previous windows 8 installation.

    9. If it works, run windows activation and it should show activated with the same product key as the one on the HDD that came with your laptop.

The reason that you had to wipe the evaluation version was to force the recovery drive to check with the bios for the product key. If you did not wipe the evaluation version, it will install windows 8 just fine but will use the evaluation version to activate and show that windows 8 is not activated.

I pulled the bottom of the Asus laptop a dozen time before settling on the above method and multi task a day away. This is all because I couldn't download the windows 8 iso. If you find a way to do that, that is the way to go. Installing it like I did is similar to cloning, all the ASUS bloatware is also installed but I did not waste any space with a recovery partition on the already small SSD.

Also if you don't want to waste time downloading windows 8 evaluation version and you already downloaded windows 8 pro, you can try that installation then wiping it. I don't think it will affect the pc that already has the product key from that windows 8 pro since the new installation is only temporary but if you want to be safe, download the evaluation version.

Hi there. I've been using a Q200e for a week or so now and I notice that the wireless is unstable. In an hour it will randomly drop for 30 seconds or so, then come back on. According to the Windows 8 network thingy it is still connected, but the internet just stops for a short time, then comes back. I know it's not a router issue because all the other computers around it continue working while it is off. I tried reinstalling the wireless driver and that didn't help. Any suggestions other than returning it? Thanks.

Thanks aquaholik, I did end up getting the SSD to work by doing a fresh install from a Windows 8 DVD I downloaded from MSDN(Access was provided by my university).

I am actually returning to this thread to report that I am having issues with my S200E's touchpad and to see if anyone could help or was experiencing similar problems.

Basically, when I press my finger on the touchpad, not moving it, the mouse cursor moves erratically. It jumps in random directions, veering one way across the screen or another. It also continually registers clicks- both left and right mouse clicks- if the mouse pointer moves anywhere near an icon, it will do all kinds of things, open the program, right click + make short cuts, drag and drop files/folders into other files folders. This is all the while I am not lifting my finger off the touchpad. Forbid I try to use it like a normal touchpad , the problem becomes worse. I cannot even move the cursor in a straight line. Since the usable surface of the touchpad covers the left and right mouse buttons, even clicking them has becomes a challenge because as soon as I try to press the mouse buttons, the cursor jumps to some random nearby location and registers the click elsewhere instead of my intended target.

At first I thought it was something to do with Windows 8, and decided I would restore my system to a backup I had made before I had this issue. However, once I loaded my backup recovery software Acronis 2013 from a bootable CD- which operates under Linux and uses Linux drivers- I noticed the same problem with the touchpad. So, to recap that is 2 operating systems, 2 different types of drivers, same problem.

I called ASUS tech support last night, and the lady I spoke to wanted me to "refresh" the system, which I guess is the jargon nowadays for restoring the system to factory defaults. I wasn't able to do this because I lost that recovery partition when I migrated over to the SSD, so I did the next thing she suggested which was to re-install the touchpad driver. I tried both the newest Smart Gesture driver and ELAN touch driver that they had on the ASUS website, and neither of them help with the problem.

I am about to reinstall the old HDD back inside the S200E and do a "refresh". Not because I expect this to fix the problem, but because I think this is the last thing I will need to do before I send it to ASUS to have it fixed under warranty. I believe the problem is faulty hardware.

This is what I get for trying to save a few bucks. I thought ASUS made quality products, guess I was wrong. I am going to be without a notebook PC for probably 2+ weeks, which sucks because I am a computer engineering student and I need the damn thing to write programs while I am away from my desktop. In hindsight, I should have just paid twice as much for an Apple or a Lenovo. I've had good experience with IBM/Lenovo service. My experience with my Iphone tells me that if I had bought a Mac, I would be able to take it right to an Apple store and have it fixed or replaced the same day /rant

If anyone else has any suggestions for a solution, or if anyone else has experienced (will experience?) similar problems, feel free to comment.

TL;DR: My S200E's touchpad is acting erratically, and hardware failure is suspected

Can anyone recommend a good sleeve that fits the Q200e? Just something that will fit the laptop nicely when I throw it in my messenger bag. Thanks!!

I would just put the original HDD back and see if the touchpad problem persist. If it does then refresh it to factory setting before all the update and see if that fixes it. If not then it is definitely hardware problem.
