    hey folks,

can anyone tell me, which HDMI version is used by the ASUS? I can´t find any datasheet on whether it is 1.3/1.2/1.x and I don´t know where else to look it up.

    Thx in advance

I have the UL30A-X5...this is my second as my battery was loose on the 1st and was replaced through Amazon. I store files on a SD card...when I inserted the card, it said "Did not install properly" and it could not install. I have tried to fix drivers, etc, but have had zero luck. It worked right out of the box on the last machine that I had. Any suggestions on what the issue could be? I am operating Windows 7.

    Thanks

Sorry, it's been awhile since I signed in. If it's not too late to answer, the X4 model comes with the 5600 mAh battery.

I just received my Asus UL30A-X4 from newegg and its been great so far. I was afraid of the wifi issues some of these machine are having, but so far my connection has been rock solid. I get a stronger signal on the X4 than on my older notebook. Also has the 5600mAh battery :)

Question for UL30A silver owners -- I was wondering is there any visible wear/paint chipping off off of the UL30A after owning them?

No signs of wear so far after two months of fairly hard, carry-it-everywhere kind of use.

I was going to buy an 13" inCase from the Apple store but now am convinced it would be a bit too roomy. My boyfriend uses this be.ez case cut for macbook air for his lenovo x301 - I tried it out and it's perfect for my UL30A. I'm now convinced that other laptop cases made for 13" laptops will me made for reasonably thicker laptops and allow too much movement within the sleeve.

In other words, my recommendation would be a sleeve made for a macbook air. It'll be nice and snug without slipping out.

I had the wireless problem on my UL30-A2. After many calls, driver installs/un-installs, etc, I finally got an RMA and they replaced the wireless card. 1000% better. Never drops the signal and very good range.

Just bought a UL30A-X5 and it has a sticky right mouse button! When pressed, it springs back up after half a second. Im furious! I waited six days for this? And of all problems something so ridiculous. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Or do I have to pull the entire thing apart? If so Im just better off shoving it back to amazon.

    Has anyone experienced this problem?

Given that HDMI 1.3 is a 3+ year old technology, I would assume all new Asus laptops are using 1.3.

One quick question: I've seen somewhere [I don't remember where], before I had this laptop, that there is a software that simulates a CD/DVD drive so I can make the backup DVD in ISO format. With the ISO transferred to a machine with a DVD burner, I can have the physical recovery media ready in case something bad happens with the laptop [still have to get an external DVD drive, but more calm about this kind of disaster]. Thank you!

I believe you're looking for ISO mounting programs. Daemon Tools is probably one of the more popular mounting softwares.

Thanks David, I was thinking about something similar to Daemon Tools, but that simulates a DVD-Writer. I want the backup application to recognize it as a DVD-Writer.

I received my UL30A-X4 yesterday. I am unable to get my SD card reader work in fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate. It doesn't recongnize card inserted in it. But if the card is already inside the after reboot/sleep mode it is accessible.

Any one else faced this issue, please?

Is the replacement the same Atheros AR9285 wirless card?

I have the exact model and problem but they refuse to replace the card. They did update the BIOS which I am testing now. Connections seem to be holding up.

The issue you're describing sounds like a software issue. Try reinstalling the card reader driver using the version from Asus' website. Also make sure you've installed all the latest windows critical updates.

Does anyone know why certain models of UL30A don't have the Turbo33 overclocking feature? It is supposed to be available in the Power4Gear app but I could not find it on my laptop even after updating to the latest version.

Hi - question from a perspective buyer here, choosing between the UL30 and Dell's new Vostro V13.

I was wondering if the palm rest areas on both the black and silver models are made of the same sort of shiny or glossy plastic - or whether it is brushed aluminium on the silver mode.

And also, how are you guys finding glare on the glossy screen?

Thanks in advance for your help. My first notebook - and Im trying to leave nothing to chance!

    (*prospective :D)

The silver A2 is nice glossy plastic - seems VERY durable, especially compared to my previous Toshiba. I imagine it would be very similar for the black model. (I personally think a brushed aluminium handrest would be unpleasant! Too cold on a chilly day, especially considering how cool the laptop runs.)

No complaints with screen glossiness. I usually run it at only 40% brightness and have no issues. Vibrant clear screen! Imagine the clarity at 100%.

    Hope that helps!

I'm still searching for a virtual DVD-RW to use with the backup software that is starting every time I fire up my UL30A.
Till now I'm unsuccessful, the only thing that comes near is TotalMounter, but because Vista and 7 64bit require signed driver only, it doesn't work.

I want to install Windows 7 Ultimate but I don't know how to go about this. I have windows 7 installation on a bootable flash drive but when I boot off the drive it goes into Asus OS recovery. How do I go about bypassing this?

I need help ASAP as I am traveling this weekend and need the features of Ultimate.

I'm excited, been without a computer for about 3 months now trying to decide which laptop to buy..

Changed my mind about 5 times till I saw the Asus UL30, after about 3 weeks of research, I finally saved enough for it and just ordered it off Amazon last night, can't wait to get it tomorrow...

I was so tempted to hold off till the new i7s but decided not to wait that long..

Finally, no more PC withdrawl :)

    Just got my replacement UL30A

Couple questions: information on Win7 optimization seems to be sparse and some shady websites keep recommending strange programs I dont trust:

-Is there anything I should uninstall and disable from my UL30A?

-Other than CCleaner, what else should I get?

-Out of the Asus programs that come stock (like the image changer thing, smartlogon, power gear, etc) which did you guys keep or uninstall/disable?

-What is wireless console 3? Does it have to autorun?

That's kind of ambiguous to say the least. Does anyone know more details of what the new BIOS update actually fixes/add?

ASUS changelogs for BIOSes are typically terse like that... Not sure who might know more details except people inside ASUS. :) Unless some people are affected by an issue that goes away with the new BIOS.

Just got my UL30A-A2 back, and I had a couple of questions. I posted these elsewhere on the forum before I remembered about this topic.

-Which driver on ASUS' support page applies to my laptop? It has the Atheros card in it, but I don't see an Atheros driver listed on the downloads page for the UL30A.

-I have my hotkeys (FN+(x)) working, but I'm having some trouble with the Wireless hotkey (FN+F2). It works, but takes a long time to respond. Plus, it cycles the Bluetooth as well, while this PC does not have Bluetooth. Installing Wireless Console 3 seems to fix the problem, though it still displays the Bluetooth status, but I'd rather not need to run that in the background just to get that hotkey working. Is there any way around this? I can post a list of all the drivers I installed from ASUS' site later, if requested.

-What's a normal temperature for the UL30A? I've been using HWMonitor, and I seem to idle with the ACPI/THRM at 47C, and the processor at 37-40C. Under load (playing a game), I get up to 58C and 49C respectively. Does that sound reasonable?

    Thanks.

EDIT: One last thing. When I switch to Quiet Office or Battery Saver, Aero automatically turns itself off. Is there a way to add this functionality to other power plans? I'd like to set it up so that Aero is automatically turned off whenever I'm on battery.

Sorry, one more question. I was reading the info thread about battery calibration. The UL30 seems to have no option for calibrating the battery in BIOS, so I was trying to do it in Windows. However, there seems to be no way to tell it to do nothing when the battery reaches a critical level so that I can let the battery die. Is there any way around this, or do I just need to have the computer shut itself off at 1%?

EDIT: Maybe I should stop saying last. I'm using the Power4Gear settings to try to get as much battery life as possible. How can I check if my processor is actually being scaled properly? As in, is there a program that I could use to read the actual speed of my CPU?

EDIT2: I found CPUZ, which seems to work, however it never shows a CPU speed below 800MHz. Will the processor not scale below that?

Hi, been looking at this on the Carphone Warehouse website, just spent a fruitless morning on the phone trying to get any kind of info from them, ASUS no help either, does Saquib, or anyone else know which version they sell? Does it come with 802.11n, which battery does it have?

    Thanks

I've been looking at the ul30A a lot lately and i'm a bit torn. I'm debating between the ul30 and the acer 1810t, sicne ultraportability is what im really gunning for. From the specs it looks a bit better, if a bit heavier, but as long as its under 4lbs, im not too worried.

I'm just wondering if there is a difference between all the ul30a variants, because amazon has several such as the A-X5, A-A2, A1, A-A3B. Is there an actual difference between these? Also, is there anyone from the NYC area that knows if stores have these on the salesfloor so I can go and look at them in person?
