Ruffin04 found the ASUS brand replacement power adapter, but it currently appears to be out of stock:

Do all of those ASUS chargers have different NB plug? With HP, it's all the same, you just choose the wattage you need for your device. This with ASUS seems mighty complicated and confusing...so many different models?

    Hello
I installed Windows 7 64 Bit. But have a problem.
My webcam connect and disconnect again all the time
(that's the sound when windows finds a new hardware)
I think maybe it's because the driver for the webcam is very old. It is from 21-06-2006 version 6.1.7601.17514.

Have spoken with Asus and they do not have a solution.
Hope that maybe someone has a solution a driver or perhaps can tell what model camera that sits in U500.

Okay, this is new to me. How do I go about making an external recovery disk (memory stick)?

I kind of need the 20Gb that is now partitioned for this. If I'm correct you cannot just copy this hidden partition to an external drive, ricght?
So, if I use RecoveryDrive.exe and back up all to a 32Gb memorystick would that let me completely reinstall the computer in case of a total software breakdown?

Or should I use, for instance, MiniTool Partition to copy the contents to a 32Gb memorystick. Would that let me make it use again easily?

Why don't you just use some kind of backup tool to create an image of the entire disk drive, and then, if you need to reinstall, just return the entire image of the disk.

Try this one, it's exactly what you could use, to create an image of entire disk:

AOMEI Backupper – free disk imaging and cloning software, backup and recovery for your computer.

After updating my Asus Ux51VZA bios to 204, I had to turn the adaptive screen settings off because the brightness was really ridiculous..

Another thing I noticed after the bios update; the backlight keyboard is always on at booting up in windows 8, normally only when booting up it was on, now it is even staying on when booted up in Windows 8.. So I have to turn it off with the keys.

Is there a way to turn it off when booted up in windows?

edit; turned off the automatic thingy, worked!

Another question; is there a way to still have Instant On, without having that notification thing at start up? So the notification of '11 days' blabla... ?

I don't want to close it every time hahahaha

That would indeed be a good option, however than I'd be backing up 60+Gb instead of 20. :)

Well, with today's external hard prices and sizes, is that a problem? If it is, if I understand correctly, this is a separate partition on which the data is, correct? So, just backup this partition and partition table, so that later you can restore everything if needed. Also, with this tool I suggested, you can later mount the partition in Windows as an external disk, and then you can do other things with it, if you like.

Upgraded my UX51VZ to 12GB of RAM today. I matched the RAM that is soldered in (11-11-11-28) and my windows experience score on my processor and ram went up .3 points.

I'm disappointed that they are using Hynix Memory which I lovingly refer to as Hyjinx. It's the kind of crap memory that Dell puts in their systems. However, looking at the hard drives it almost looks like they might be using a draft standard of NGFF (Next Generation Form Factor) - when they come out in June/July - I may buy one to test to see if they are compatible. Is it known for certain that it is completely proprietary?

My webcam is not working in windows 7 Is there anyone with a windows 7 where it works? I do not know the model name so I can not find the driver for it.

Maybe someone with Windows 8 can help with the name of the camera?

Not certain, as far as I know, just an "unknown" form factor. Would be awesome news if that new spec would turn out to be compatible with ours!

Im interested in the same thing. If i make a USB stick choosing Create a recovery drive (and check "Copy contents from the recovery partition to the recovery drive" ( http://www.eightforums.com/attachments/f1/f11/4766d1332313775-system-repair-disc-create-windows-8-drive-2.jpg) is it the same as making a factory default disk? I have already made the system repair disc (dvd), but I would like to do also the real "factory default disc" or atleast a disc having the system to install win8 if the drive is broken on someday. I cannot find any useful/understandable information how to make a factory default disc without a software provided by manufacturer (and Asus doesn't provide it for win8/u500vz) . Does anybody know how to make it?

Someone told to make a system image. There is an option in recovery section to create a system image, but I don't want to make a 80gb image. And it seems to be impossible to make dvd's when the "copy contents from.." is checked, only a USB stick is accepted.

Edit. I gave up after several hours and days trying to figure it out how make those factory default disks and finally tried to Create a system image to get atleast something to be backupped. Unfortunately I have the same problem as many other have already seen: error (0x80780119) when trying to make the system image. "The backup failed, there is not enough disk space.. blablablaaa"

I would be very surprised if the touchpad wasn't mounted like in the UX32VD ( Asus Zenbook UX32VD Teardown - iFixit ), however I haven't looked under the battery.

Does anybody know how to enable "momentum" or "glide" for the mouse cursor in the touchpad drivers? For an example of what I'm talking about, see the "Momentum" feature here: http://www.synaptics.com/solutions/technology/touchpad

After having this feature on my HP Envy 14, I find it almost impossible to live without! I tried to download the Synaptics touchpad drivers, but I just got an error during installation and could not proceed. Is there another way to enable this feature without Synaptics drivers? The ASUS Smart Gesture drivers don't seem to have this feature.

    Thanks for the help ;)

I am now also the proud owner of the Asus U500VZ Touch :)

So I can confirm this machine is for sale in Denmark (via wupti.com)

I received the machine this monday and am very happy with it. The build quality is the best I have seen in a laptop until now. The display + sound and performance are all as "promised".

I thought I would report my initial experiences with the laptop for others to find/read. I certainly have had good use of the info I found in this forum prior to making the purchase.

Like so many have reported I also experience the fan to be spinning all the time. Thankfully the noise level is very low, I only notice the fan when there are no other sounds around me. I will try and upgrade the bios soon.
The laptop do get hot around where the vents for the fan are located, but the rest of the casing is cool to touch.

I have had troubles finding a good case/sleeve for the laptop (also a common problem) and finally bought the Tom Bihn 4Z Cache sleeve recommended by somebody in this forum. The sleeve fits like a glove and looks nice, my only misgivings are 1) I had to pay $65 for shipment and 2) I would have preferred a zipper so that the laptop was completely protected - I feel very protective of my brushed metal look :)

I have installed dual boot on the machine with Win8 alongside Ubuntu. I had to break the Raid setup and reinstall Windows 8. But it was a straightforward installation from there on. I did however have to tinker a bit with the grub (ubuntu) bootloader to make it recognize the Windows 8 partition, but that was really a minor issue.
However is was first afterwards that I realized that the laptop package did not contain a physical copy of the windows 8 product key so when I wiped the partitions I also wiped my product key. For others I can recommend to read Terpen Tijn's guide to installing another OS on the U500VZ ( here) before deleting partitions.

Wrt Ubuntu. I have the Intel GPU running, but not the Nvidia. Which among other things means that my hdmi connection is not working. Also I have no sound the subwoofer. Other than this Ubuntu runs fine and installed without any problems.

In windows everything is working. I have attached two external monitors (mini-vga+hdmi) and use the laptop screen at the same time which at work gives me a nice big desktop. The monitor attached to the mini-vga plug sometimes flicker a little, if this continues I will try with another cable (right now I use the converter included in the package from Asus).

    Hello!

I've installed Ubuntu on a UX51VZ. Unfortunately, I have some problems using the Linux fan control tool. When I try "sensors-detect" it comes up with the termal sensors for the cpu but does not detect any pwm controlable fans. Thus, calling pwmconfig ends up with "/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no fan-capable sensor modules installed".

Could anybody give me a hint on this issue?

    Hello all,

So, I have become an owner of UX51VZ, version with 2x128GB SanDisk SSD, and let me tell you, they are FAST. I broke raid field, and installed Windows 8 Pro on first disk, second is used as fast storage option.

More or less I am satisfied with everything, except fan which is bothering me a bit (but mostly in a silent room, where you can hear that high-pitched whir). Nothing terrible, but I wanted to control it with Notebook Fancontrol ( [Vorstellung] NoteBook FanControl (NBFC) - Seite 21 - ComputerBase Forum).

However, I have found that the Notebook Fancontrol doesn't work properly with my NB. You can start it, and it will apply temp policy and kill the fans if the NB temperature is below 50 c, but if the temperature rises, it won't kick the fans back into operation, no matter how high the temperature goes (I think I tested it up to 65 degrees). If I press on "Update selected threshold", it will start the fans again, and kill them when the temp goes below 50 c, but then again it won't start them when temp goes above 50. Also, if the screen locks, the Notebook Fancontrol will stop functioning, but it will resume the operation once that the screen is unlocked. Weird behavior, eh?

Does the Fancontrol work good for other users of UX51VZ who had downloaded it? Is there some catch that I'm not getting? Under Config it has properly identified UX51VZA model (which I have).

I do not own the UX51VZ yet but I read in the Computerbase Forum that this behaviour could result from some checkbox not set in Notebook Fan Control. Something with 'automatic'.

    May be this helps.

    Hi, guys.
    I got my UX51VZ yesterday with 128G sandisk i100 SSD + 500G ST HDD.
Here is the resultat of SSD by crystaldisk and as ssd.
    sandisk i100_crystaldiskmark.PNG sandisk i100_AS SSD.PNG
I'm wondering the SSD writing speed is not so fast and thinking to return it. What about yours?

The only option I see is Start automatically with Windows, but this doesn't help with this problem, it will only run Fancontrol when Windows is rebooted next time.

    Maybe I'm missing something else?

Hmm, interesting. My SanDisk is sd5se2128g1002e model (taken from Device Manager), and my results are:

    Ivan-NB.jpg

So you're good with Seq, but the rest do seem quite worse...

But if you're satisfied with it in operation, I don't see a reason to return it. It's down to personal feel, not synthetic benchmarks.

    To Nusuth:
It seems strange for me too. How could the seq is so good and the else are so bad. Furthor, when I tried to copy a fold with many little files, the speed is so terrible just like the resulat of 4K in the test software.
But I think your situation is different to me. Because you have two 128G SSD to build RAID0. Normally, you should have 2 times faster than mine, if I understand well the means of RAID0. And here is the result from the site notebookcheck. net with two 256G ADATA xm11 in RAID0.

Try to acquire model with dual SSD, there you will get a much faster SSD. The model you have, if I am not mistaken, has the SSD soldered to the motherboard, and the idea is to be used as a basis for Intel Rapid Start technology, probably.

There is no so much chose for the configuration. If it is a model with dual SSD, you have to get a touch glare screen.

France. The CPU is evaluated to i7-3632QM now. otherwise, we only have 3 different configs (without external optical unit, but additional bag and mouse for free):
    non-touch screen (non-glare) version: 128G SSD + 500G HDD, 6G RAM
touch screen (glare) version: 2*128G or 2*256G SSD (RAID0), 8G RAM

Weird that they wouldn't sell non-glare non-touch version with 2*128GB.... And I guess you have no use for touch, glare version. Maybe try to get from Amazon the version you like? If you're not bothered with German letters on keyboard, you're fine. Also, there is a Swiss version with i7-3632QM CPU and English letters on CH keyboard layout, if you like that.

As you think, I don't need the touch screen. However in Amazon FR or DE, there is only German keyboards, and I don't like it. And I think this is same for Swiss version with a Swiss keyboard.

Just I'm not so lucky.

Still a French keyboard may be listed sometime in the future so here's the URL: spare parts and options Asus UX51VZ - Zandparts

    Hello!

I got my new UX51VZ, a beautiful piece of work! :)

I want to do a clean install of the Windows 8 that comes with the machine just to get rid of all bloatware and get it as efficient in performance as possible. I am not interested in breaking the RAID or anything, just do a clean install. How can I do this?

Sorry for the newbie question! :)

    Thanks.

To do a clean install you'll need to get a Windows disc which Asus doenst include with any of their computers. Once you get that you'll also need an external usb optical drive since there is no build in one. You can also do it with a flash drive. You then install Windows just like you normally would.

Please, search around the forum first. There have been many guides about this. They key is in your BIOS and windows 8 will automatically recognize this and activate.

    Thanks!

I don't have a Windows 8 disc, just flash drive also no iso file for windows 8 installation using flash drive.... :(

    Is there any workaround?

The facture install uses an staggering 32.7 GB of C drive and leaves only 67% usable....
I tried using the reset function and ask to erase all partitions but installs all the same way...

A real nice laptop, but returned today because of SSD format. Had the 2x128GB version. Would like real SSD's, non-soldered battery, non soldered Ram, a bit better display.

Hey guys, I'm about to purchase the U500VZ, jus wondering why the majority of the web shops sell the w8 models? I'd love to have win7 on it; and I heard it's hard to install 7 on a w8 model. I'm in Australia, any suggestions? Cheers

My guess is Asus only makes and sells with W8. Resellers will install W7. XoticPC for example does. They only offer Proffesional and Ultimate versions. I don't know if that means any issue with Home? Since you are in Australia Xotic might not be an option but there are drivers so you should be able to do an install.

Whenever I play DotA 2, my laptop heats up like crazy, fans kick in real bad. After quitting the game, often the fans stay quite loud. Any solutions/tweaks to that?
