I have successfully tried Linux Ubuntu 11.10 x64 via a 2gb usb stick. cpu and memory tested ok! I ran it without installing it. I was unable to use my bluetooth mouse . I liked how the deskop was set up (easy freindly simple) . Many functions worked like the browser and email client but I want to get hibernation and other things tweaked and working correctly. I am going to try using vmware and virtualbox, thanks!
I will look into getting a 6230 card soon as i also have issues with my bt.
Whats the difference?

One thing about buying really cheap wireless cards on ebay is that they tend to be counterfeit. They'll be badly made and all of them will have the same MAC address. I ordered one once when I had an m11x and it caused it to blue screen on boot.

Regarding Ubuntu, I tried getting the Linux version of Minecraft but it won't run. It crashes. My graphics are not being recognized by ubuntu, could that be my problem? -
I haven't done this in awhile, but the way you used to test to see if opengl was being used was to run 'glxinfo | grep -i render' and seeing if direct rendering: yes was there. (If it's no, there's no opengl being used.) -
davidricardo86 Notebook Deity
I think my problem was somehow coming from the fact that I was virtual machining Ubuntu with VMware Workstation, instead of having it installed directly on another partition (it also didn't work when running Ubuntu from a USB stick).
So I ended up making a 20GB partition for Ubuntu. After setting up dual-boot, and installing the OS directly to the SSD, Minecraft now works. After getting the OS setup and Minecraft installed, the graphics were still not working correctly even though Minecraft was playable. There were a lot of artifacts, odd colors, and abnormalities in the game. After running an update in Ubuntu and downloading the latest updates, the game is finally working the way it does on Windows. Ubuntu plays it very smooth on graphics set to "FANCY", but I think it's still smoother in Windows (due to driver/software optimization, correct me if im wrong). Sometimes the game crashed, but for the most part it was enjoyable (average 20-40fps), very smooth without lag, and consistent. As a side note, I did install the Optifine (multi-threaded) Mod, in order to get better performance. I run Optifine/Gamebooster on Windows 7 to help free up resources too.
I would like to enter some more fixes but I do not know how. For example here:

What do you mean "to test to see if opengl was being used was to run 'glxinfo | grep -i render' and seeing..."? How do i do this? -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
For the grub2 fixes I mentioned, run this to edit the file:
Code:sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
Code:glxinfo | grep -i render
Code:direct rendering: Yes OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Mobile GL_EXT_vertex_array_bgra, GL_NV_conditional_render,
An easy way to see if glx is working is to just run an opengl application, like glxgears. -
What you are discussing about U24E helps me a lot. Thanks all of you.
I bought it Feb 1st.The most terrible problem for me is it's the bug on bios about the support of STAT3.
I have called for Asus's serves.but I got any useful help. The only good news is asus don't block the stat3. but they might deal with this issue passively.
Is there anyone have interest in modifying the rom v202 to rebuild the support of sata3. I have confirmed that the hardwares have perfect support of sata3.The only problem is the bios. -
Errr...might be a good news,i confirm SATA 3 device now MIGHT WORKS IF you set the bios into ide mode(WHICH MEANS LIMITED to 100MBps read/write)

Trust me, the issues and symptoms you're reporting are the exact same that a lot of us have experienced trying to get SATA III drives to work. -

Whatever you do don't flash from NTFS using easy flash in the BIOS.
I have no idea what it changes... the log only says 'firmware change.' -

There is an updated version of WinFlash that is available too. I downloaded that as well.
I'm using AMIBCP to look through bits and pieces of the new BIOS. Unfortunately i don't think i will have any luck.
Can someone test a SATAIII storage device (install os, benchmark) like SSD/HDD? -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Don't use easy flash using a BIOS image stored on an NTFS partition, that is all. For one reason or another it is buggy and known to be prone to bricking. I can't explain it because I don't know the internals of the flashing process, I just read lots of posts here and it's a trend. :-/
For the easy flash method, use a freshly formatted FAT USB stick or anything FAT formatted to store the BIOS image that you are going to flash. Since the internal HD is formatted NTFS (out of the box at least), don't flash from the internal hard disk. -
I can confirm new bios (205) haven't solved sata 3 problem in achi mode

This is not a good news I was waiting since November for this BIOS update and there is still SATA 3 detection problem not solved.

It really sucks to hear that SATA3 devices still won't work on the U24E. They may never work. So I'm already thinking about my next laptop. Ivy Bridge is nearing soon too and AMD's Trinity platform intrigues me as well. Ideally I would like a stronger GPU (I plan to do some heavy Minecrafting) but with lower energy consumption if possible. I'd prefer integrated but would consider a discreet GPU too.
Another NBR member mentioned the Asus U36SG and I like it a lot (except for the price).
And apparently SATA3 SSDs work on this HM65 chipset, specifically Samsung's 830 Series which I am after. See here (CANNOT confirm SATA Mode is AHCI or IDE):

Like it or not, we all sucker to buy U24e because asus never state that this model support SATA3 ...Fortunately i still keep my SATA 2 SSD  which became rare this days

Fortunately I also kept my sata2 ssd from my previous laptop.
Also, thanks for the advice regarding XP & 7. I will continue using 7 for games.

I also have some good information regarding memory for the u24e:
I changed over to the Corsair Vengeance and sure enough out of the box the RAM was clocked at 800MHz (1600), even with my i7-2620M. I didn't think it would work because according to the Intel's ARK page, this CPU only supports up to 1333 memory.
I ran into this over at Newegg:

I then went ahead and bought Thaiphoon Burner Super Blaster - Professional Edition (7.4.0.3 Build 0212), downloaded it and managed to write the missing XMP profiles onto the Corsair Vengeance timings chart. I successfully added an Enthusiast (DDR3-1866) and Extreme (DDR3-2133) profile. But for some reason only the 1866 profile can be utilized. This could be due to my CPU, my motherboard, or maybe my BIOS. Im not sure.
Using several applications like MemTest+ 4.20 and HWiNFO64 I was able to confirm that the timings and overall clocks did change. I am now successfully using "1866 ram". I will post some benchmarks and my general findings a little later.

I was wondering if anyone can post what type of battery improvement I might be able to see with the installation of a SSD drive? Possibly with light web browsing and screen brightness set to 40% I am getting 5hrs with the standard hard drive on power save mode. Does anyone think the SSD will make that much of a difference in improving the battery life? Such as maybe another 30mins or possibly an extra 1 hr with the same brightness and web browsing. Thanks

Hi all , Yesterday I bought a Asus E24E XH71 with the I7, 500gb , 8 gb ram.
I have been reading through this forum with great interest. What bought my attention is the fact that the E24 seem to be unable to use SATA 3 disks utilizing its full performance,,,,.
After all this reading I decided to buy a 120 GB SATA II SSD and right now I´m installing the recovery partition onto it from a backup DVD´s.
I removed the original hard disk, and took a look at it and its the WD 500 Blue Scorpy. Looking it up on the western digital side reveals that its a SATA III hd.
So does it mean my computer has a native support for SATA III then ???. -

I've also tried to install a Sata III SSD inside, a Corsaire Force 3 240Go and it works with UEFI but sometime, When the computer start or restart, it enters in the bios with User credential only . I've also tried a CrystalDiskMark on it but the transfer rate is fixed to 263MBps only So I can deduce that if device in Sata III are plugged inside, the transfert rate is like Sata II

Hi,
I am seeking assistance from anybody who has managed to successfully get Ubuntu 11.x or 10.x working on the U24E, but particularly to Users AllurGroceries or frychiko if they are listening.
I have managed to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my new U24 and it is running almost perfectly except that the desktop is really sluggish. I have traced this down to the fact that Xorg is using the fallback "Software Rasterizer" instead of the actual i915 module that is present on my system.
There are no errors in any logs; it simply appears that Xorg is not loading the Intel driver because the Intel driver indicates that it cannot perform direct rendering for the internal LCD panel (even though it allocates all the frame buffers, tiling buffers, etc., etc.).
If you think you know the cause of the problem, please read my full description of the problem on my post on Ubuntu forums before replying. However, in the first instance what would be really helpful is if one or more people who have managed to get 11.10 installed (or even better, 10.10) could post the output of the following commands:
glxinfo Check
The glxinfo tool is part of the mesa-utils package, a set of diagnostic tools for testing and benchmarking the OpenGL library installation. It can be installed as follows:
Code:sudo apt-get install mesa-utils
Code:~$ glxinfo | grep render direct rendering: Yes OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_depth_clamp, GL_NV_fragment_program,
There is a section in the log that indicates that the Intel driver has loaded and that direct rendering is enabled. From here, Xorg will load the appropriate rasterisation driver. Please scan your Xorg log at /var/log/Xorg.0.log for a section that looks similar to below, and post the equivalent section from your log so we can compare.

ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
@aps2012 The answer is very simple, 10.10 has a kernel that is too old. There is no sandy bridge support in that kernel or in the graphics stack in the distro.
You want to be running at the very least 11.04, which has 2.6.38, but will really suck.
11.10 stock might be good enough for you, I don't know how picky you are.
I recommend at least a 3.1 kernel, so you can do 11.10 with a PPA package for 3.1 (or better yet, build your own kernel - I attached a .config on the first page). -
@ALLurGrocercies,
Thanks for your reply. Actually, the kernel has been fast forwarded. Maybe I should have explained the environment a little more beforehand.
The environment as it currently stands was prepared as follows:
1.) Ubuntu 10.10 (amd64, alternate installation) was installed from ISO CD image.
2.) Kernel was fast-forwarded from 2.6.35 to 3.2.12-030212, the current kernel for Oneiric. This was done to get kernel support for all the peripherals and Intel Sandy Bridge HD3000 graphics chipset (as recommended in this thread).
3.) Package mesa-utils was installed using apt-get so I could run the glxinfo and glxgears tools.
And that's all. Apart from steps (2) and (3) above, it is a completely vanilla system. There are no externally-connected displays.
No post-installation software updates have been performed. This is the second time I've built this system. The first time I did run all the post-installation updates. After the second clean install I noticed the logs and symptoms were identical in every way without the updates, so the system currently doesn't have them.
That said, the environment works very well and is completely stable. Confirmed as working completely are:
- OpenGL (glxgears, Adobe Flash, OpenGL screensavers, etc.)
- Wired LAN
- Wireless LAN
- Touchpad (shows as the Elan Multitouch)
- Hotkeys
- Suspend/Resume/Hibernate
- WebCAM
Not yet confirmed but appear to be operational:
- Bluetooth
The only thing not working is the hardware acceleration for the desktop support. I don't think it's the kernel, it might the Xorg server, its configuration, or LibGL, or a combination of all three.
If you could just post the output of glxinfo and /var/log/Xorg.0.log from your working system so I can make a comparison I would be grateful.
Thanks in advance, -
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Yeah your whole xorg/glx stack is behind though, that's why you have no DRI. You need a newer distro in addition to a newer kernel.
Here's an old article I remember that will give you more details: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=intel_snb_natty&num=1
If you're staying away from newer distros because of unity and/or gnome3, you might consider using MATE (gnome 2 fork) on top of a newer ubuntu release: http://mate-desktop.org/ -

Hi everyone.
I bought a U24E half a month ago only to discover that SATA 3 is not supported. (I swear I will read users' review from this forum the next time I buy a new notebook!) My crucial M4 128GB SSD therefore became a part of my girlfriend's netbook.
Two day's ago I bought a Sandisk Ultra 128GB SSD (SATA 2, with a SF-12XX controller) primarily because of a bargain price (HKD 899, about USD 115). Installation of Windows 7 and everything else was successful but every time I power on the notebook it goes to BIOS showing that no boot device is present, sort of like what dasaki described in a previous post.
I would like to know if it is a problem persistent on all SATA 2 SSD or it is specific to some models. Can you guys tell me what model of SATA 2 SSD you are using and whether you have the same problem?
Thanks a lot in advance. -
Samsung 470, no issues. Shows up in BIOS fine.
-
Sandisk Ultra and G.Skill Phoenix Evo both use SF-1222 controller. So it seems the controller might be the problem?

Hi ALLurGroceries,
Thanks for your reply(ies) and apologies for not acknowledging them sooner.
Thanks in part to some of the links you posted which gave me an indication of the package upgrades required, I have successfully diagnosed the source of the problems and now my system is fully operational and completely stable.
I successfully fast-forwarded the entire xserver-xorg through two distributions from 10.10 to 11.10 (final) and here is how my system behaves now:
First, uname -a:
Code:Linux ubuntu-pegasus 3.2.12-030212-generic #201203191306 SMP Mon Mar 19 17:07:26 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

- Ubuntu 10.10 (alternate CD installation)
- Kernel 3.2.12-030212
- xserver-xorg 1:7.6+7ubuntu7 (from Oneiric)
- xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.15.901-1ubuntu2.1 (from Oneiric)
- libdrm-intel1 2.46-1ubuntu1 (from Oneiric, includes Sandy Bridge)
I realise that the easiest way to get Sandy Bridge working correctly was to upgrade my distribution. However, as I mentioned in my Ubuntu Forums post, at this stage I do not want the Unity UI or the less-than-satisfactory Gnome- x emulations within those distributions; I just prefer Gnome 2, hence my request for assistance with getting the X Server going. Maybe 12.x will be what I'm looking for; at least now I have the luxury of being able to wait and see.
Anyway, thanks for your assistance. -

We should have a list at the beginning of the thread (im looking at you AllUrgroceries) listing all the "User Tested/Verified working SSDs" and a seperate list stating the SSDs that have not worked correctly so far. I think it would save a lot of potential and new U24E owners a big headache.

I give it up and ordered a Samsung 470 (128GB) from ebay. It feels really bad to buy something with previous generation technology.
From what I recall seeing in this thread:
Works with no issues
Samsung 470 (Controller: Samsung S3C29MAX01)
Intel 320 (Controller: Intel PC29AS21BA0)
Kingston SSDNow V+ 100 (Controller: JMicron JMF618)
Works but with some issues
Sandisk Ultra (Controller: SandForce SF-1222)
G.Skill Phoenix Evo (Controller: SandForce SF-1222)
Does NOT work
Crucial M4 (Controller: Marvel 9174 BLD2)
Corsair Force 3 (Controller: SandForce SF-2281)
Seagate Momentus XT 750GB
Speculation 1: All SATA 3 hard drives doesn't work
Speculation 2: SATA 2 SSD with SF-1222 works with a BIOS issue
By the way, I notice that GenTech is providing an option for OCZ Vertex 2 (which also use SF-1222):
GenTech PC - Customize System
Can someone from GenTech confirm whether you encounter the BIOS issue with Vertex 2?
It would also be great if it can be confirmed whether the 1st generation Seagate Momentus XT 500GB works without any issue.
