so i got it (with 2080 max-q), repasted with conductonaut and replaced the thermal-desaster with 17 w/mk pads and the temps are dream-like. capped at 3.8ghz under full load temps don't even reach 70 degrees. fans on turbo but don't remp up a lot, really amazing. but the repaste of this thing is not the most funny job, i'm glad it's done and until my 2tb nvme arrives i'm not opening the thing up again haha ;-)

what i don't understand, the 2080 max-q should have a default turbo boost of up to 1230mhz. mine shows runing at 1800mhz. if i check in gpu-tweak i.e., the targeted boost clock shows 1230, but in the monitoring window within the same tool it shows the card running at 1.8ghz. same for hwinfo. ^^

If that's true that's awesome. Can you confirm with benchmarks that they're actually running at the higher speeds? It should translate in higher framerates / scores than comparable 1200Mhz boost versions of the RTX 2080 Max Q

Max Q benchmarks online do tend to show scores around 7000-8000 vs 10000+ for the 'full' version, so I'm afraid that based on that benchmark alone scores aren't all that much higher than expected. Would be interesting to see your other test results though. :)

yeah i just looked through the details of the score and saw it as well :) yeah totally, i will run some more and leave some feedback in here. any specific tests you'd like to see (as i don't have lots of benching tools installed anymore since i'm still waiting on the 2tb nvme drive haha)? :)

Personally I'm mostly interested in framerate comparisons for videogames, as it seems that most higher end Max-Q implementations run at 10% to 20% less fps compared to the regular notebook versions. Though you don't have to do anything for me specifically, I already preordered the GX701GX and I'm just checking out all the benchmarks to try and justify waiting vs. dropping the pre-order and getting a G703GX instead. :p

haha okay ^^ well so far i'm more than happy with it, i played resident evil 2 remake on the weekend and the performance was awesome, espceially with the temps i'm getting i'm more than happy. i had a 17 inch of the new zephyrus on pre-order but then when i saw the 17 inch of the new strix canceled it and ordered a 15 inch instead, since i got a monster desktop and really want the notebook to be super-portable the 15 inch was the thing for me :)

Is the difference between the two that big though? I thought the GX701GX was only 2-3cm wider and 1-2cm deeper than the GX531GX. As they always advertised '17 inch laptop in a 15 inch form factor'. I mean it's great either way because you already have it while I still have to wait, but I figured the dimensions of the 17 inch Zephyrus were very manageable compared to other 17 inch laptops. (And compared to many 15,6 inch laptops as well)

yeah i figured as well that's why i preordered it. but then again, the 17 inch version of the strix (maybe the zephyrus will) won't fit in a 15 inch (and not a tight fit one) backpack (at least in the two i tried, that i use), so that's why i decided it was still too big for me. the 15 inch fits nicely - so i wouldn't say it's a small 15 inch - but i don't want to carry any bigger backpack than i already do haha ^^

You have any insights you can share BOB? How do you think this compares to the Y740 (not considering price)?

I’m not sure they’re too comparable. I can’t imagine someone deciding between the two.

This is quite an interesting laptop that is very unique by design.

Yeah, I get that. I know you were pretty impressed with the thermals and everything on the y740 so was curious how it compared. I am actually completely up in the air on what I want to buy right now. I looked at the 17 inch Y740 (2080 max q) and actually ordered an Area 51m because of all the recent discounts. The order got canceled though b/c they wont ship it to an APO address. I looked at the other full size 2080 laptops but they seem huge even compared to the Area 51m. Which brings me to looking for the fastest Max q laptop...

    Hi,

Have any of you guys experienced a problem with holding down the "caps lock" key? I noticed that if I hold down the caps lock key for more than a second or two, the rest of the keyboard becomes unresponsive until about 4-5 seconds after another key is pressed. Example: in notepad, press and hold "caps lock" for 2 seconds, then press W (with caps lock still held down); the W will show up about 4-5 seconds after the key is pressed.

I have a slightly different model (the one with the 2070), but I didn't see a thread ofr that one so I put my question here. Hope it doesn't bother anyone.

    Hi everyone,

could someone please confirm that the USB-C displayport is wired to the NVidia card and not the Intel integrated graphics?

    It is explained here, but I'll copy&paste: https://uploadvr.com/oculus-rift-s-valve-index-no-hdmi/ https://uploadvr.com/oculus-rift-s-valve-index-no-hdmi/

An example of a laptop which would not work.

I am planning on using the laptop for VR development 'on the go' and it being the slimmest available laptop would be a huge plus. But I do need working displayport so if anyone could confirm if it is indeed wired to the Nvidia GPU / post a screenshot of that page in the nvidia panel, that would be a massive help.

    Thanks!

Hello guys, I was wondering if you too have a small black strip of unused screen just below the top bezel. I don't know if it's normal, but i requested an rma and even the replacement have this problem.
Also, I was thinking of repasting it and swapping the internal drive with another 1 or 2 tb ssd. When doing so, do the apps like armoury crate automatically reinstall with windows(like they are prompted from the bios or something? or do I have to manually do it?
