Can't find over clocking in the Asus gaming center. There's no software guides to this thing....
Also how do I make a recovery drive to copy is over to larger ssd? Asus doesn't seem to have a dedicated recovery assistant

Earlier reports have all said the GX501 isn't tunable, it's all locked down in MSI DGC, same for fan curve.

I was hoping that the newest Geforce Experience GFE with Whisper Mode functionality extensions would add some fan curve tuning for the GPU, so look for that newest Nvidia GFE and install Intel XTU for tuning the undervolt.

There's a newer bios I think that optimizes performance. Anyone try that yet? Hard to tell if the drivers in their site are newer and the Asus update software doesn't seem to be pulling new updates

@pdagal mentioned new drivers from Nvidia that optimized quiet operation, not a new BIOS/vBIOS, unless she knows of a firmware update too?

The Asus Zephyrus GX501 is the poster child for Max-Q, so you must have found some old info, there are new GFE's and new drivers from Nvidia - where do you see the GX501 listed as not whisper mode ready? Release notes? Link?/Version/Download?

Post a note into the driver/GFE release forum at Nvidia complaining about it, and see what Nvidia say's :)

As I noted in my review and further commentary, you should update your drivers. No need to delete the old ones (I didn't). The laptop was factory imaged (and often reviewed) before the final drivers were released at the end of July.

Is there a recovery utility? Is it possible to create a recovery drive to restore os after installing larger ssd?

How do I boot recovery partition?

Check in the Whisper Mode thread, I thought you knew about that already, there are downloads in there as beta and earlier releases came out, read backwards and find the newest one - hack the download link and look for newer downloads than have been posted already and post the should you find a good one.
    nVIDIA Whisper Mode
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/nvidia-whisper-mode.806216/

Update: As @pdagal said download latest from Nvidia - maybe she can post links if you can't find one with Whisper Mode enabled.

Then download the latest GFE from NVIDIA's website.
The setting to enable Whisper Mode is under the Games subsection of GFE settings.
Next, go to the NVIDIA control panel-> 3D Settings and you can set the fps you desire for the game (you may have to add the game if it's not found by the control panel).

I'd normally snark that you should download the manual, but there isn't one available:
    https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-ZEPHYRUS-GX501/HelpDesk_Manual/
    https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-ZEPHYRUS-GX501/HelpDesk_Download/

How do I create a recovery disk if one was not included with the notebook for Windows 8/8.1/10?
    https://www.asus.com/US/support/FAQ/1013622

    1. Hit the Windows key + S and key in backtracker in the search field. Click ASUS Backtracker.

IDK if backtracker is installed, I don't see it available as a download for the GX501...

    MSI 16L13 aka EVOC 16L-G-1080.

1.7 lbs (0.8 kg) Heaver than the GX501 isn't much at all. That and you get Desktop K series CPU and full 200W GTX 1080 GPU. Also 1/2 hr more battery life (with full 91W desktop CPU lol, how ASUS managed so little is beyond me)

1.6" same profile (not longer or wider). But I do not know how much that affects portability if that is your concern? It fits into normal bags fine

Yeah, backtracker might not be out yet:
Note: If your model does Not have ASUS Backtracker listed, it's not supported.

I'd open a ticket with Asus, same deal - register account, register laptop, open ticket, wait for response - usually 2-24hrs. Ask for manual and key sequence and procedure to backup recovery partition.

The article I linked said Windows 10, maybe hunt around for a newer laptop with Windows 10 for backtracker - but it still might not work right as Asus usually has a newer rev version for new editions of laptops / OS images.

So if you find a Windows 10 backtracker that does create a USB recovery flash drive be sure and test it on another disk/ssd - pull your original out, it's an old trap to try to do a restore on your only recovery partition and have it fail after formatting the partition :)

For now you could use Macrium Reflect Free, do an image copy of the whole disk and create a Macrium Reflect recovery flash drive to use for the restore. It'll be as good or better - although it will catch all of the updates you've done to the booted OS, the recovery partition will be backed up intact for later use when Backtracker is available.

Maybe Asus didn't provide an image in the recovery partition? It might have been rushed to get it out.

Hopefully Asus will have a happy answer for you via your ticket you filed with them :)

It's easier for them to copy paste a URL into the ticket, or attach a beta manual, kinda hard to do over the phone.

I thought all Millennial's preferred texting to talking on the phone?

Email's more like texting than talking on the phone. :)

Wow, this full 1070 + OC'd out of the box 7820HK really kicks butt in a bunch of games over the GX501, and stays up with the Max-Q 1080 in the rest of the games, another possible choice - maybe without the 4k display though.

A nice IPS display for me in a small laptop makes more sense than saddling it with 2x the frame rate to reach refresh, 60hz/FPS vs 120hz/FPS will generate more heat rendering more frames / sec.

In a thin laptop that effective doubling the load on the CPU/GPU makes the least sense to me...but hey a 120hz screen is cool so what do I know.

When a faster refresh IPS screen can meet 120hz, even 100hz, maybe I'll change my mind, but thermals are thermals, and generating all that extra heat in a chassis already taxed to keep it cool at 60fps it doesn't make any sense to load it up with 2x the frame rate.

For me this is solely a travel gamer laptop. So when I play at 165hz ips at home going to 60hz when traveling its night and day. They have 120hz ips screens at 1080p. Doesn't the gx501 have one?

One of the sillier additions to a cramp barely keeping things cool tiny volume chassis, double the frame rate load on the GPU / CPU.

Yes, the GX501 has a 120hz option, and I don't see that as an advantage in an already thermally challenged chassis. Better to go with an IPS 60hz than a TN you can downclock from 120hz.

I don't see the Aorus being "limited" without a 120hz screen, I think it's an obvious engineering decision to help reduce heat load.

But, will probably be induced to add it when enough people that think they want a 120hz screen demand it. :)

If I could swap my uhd screen on my x7 to the GX501 I would. The Asus screen is great but the uhd on the aorus makes the asus look dull.

Any system with killer card I swap to an 8265 first thing.

As far as keyboard mine has been flawless, took a little time to adjust as it has long travel but *knock on wood* no issues.
