I just paid for the DUO 3080 from Xotic. Looking forward to a new toy.

 

Oh nice! Congrats! Curious on performance delta! We should compare notes when we get our hardware. Was debating upgrading to 3080 before it starts shipping but don't know if I need the extra graphics oumph, especially with the price difference.

 

I am pretty sure you will have yours several weeks before the 3080. I do not expect it to ship till April or May?

Almost pulled the trigger on the 3070 version. Do you guys know if they will release a 3080 1080p 300hz config? That's what I understood from the presentation.

 

interested in this laptop myself. there is an app like throttlestop for ryzen mobile that lets us undervolt and change cpu settings right?

 

Fan noise and thermals are at the top of my list .
Does it throttle at all ? Power and thermally
I know Asus is using LM now but still curious to see if this type of cooling system works better or worse than a traditional laptop cooling system.
Any ETA on delivery?

 

I should be getting mine end of Jan or Beginning of Feb (God willing). 3 days from when it arrives to gentech.

I might upgrade to the 3080 version before then, if somethings line up on my end. Will look into the queries for sure. Stay tuned!

 

Did you decide to change your order to the 3080? I actually changed my order from the 3080 version to the 3070. I don’t feel like $800 is worth a 10% increase in power and an extra TB ssd. The screen selection also motivated my decision, there should be a 300 hz FHD option for the 3080. *I hope I don’t regret the change

 

If it’s only 10%, then not worth it for me. Was hoping more of 40% difference given the price. Hoping some numbers come out on the 26th.

 

Well my 10% is speculation from the performance of the last generation. These are Max p GPU’s, not the gimped down Max q’s. But I agree, worth evaluating some benchmarks that should arrive late this week to make a decision.

He has a really good framerate with a 10870H which is hotter than the AMD one. The zephyrus chassis also supports more wattage than the GS66 in the video. This is very promising

 

Wow!!!... well...I don’t want buyers remorse, so I guess I’ll cancel the 3070 and get the 3080... I hate that you have to wait longer for the 3080 version, but at this point, only a little while longer. Thanks for the benchmarks

 

Upgraded to the 3080 too
From my understanding @GenTechPC should have the 3080 the same time as the 3070 (in a few days). Hoping to get my machine soon after that

 

Thanks for the update, I noticed that HID evolution was getting both models around the same time, but some other retailers were not (such as xotic PC). I will check out Gentech and HIDevolution.

 

While we're waiting, this is very interesting: RTX 3090 Modded to Work via a Ryzen Laptop's M.2 Slot | Tom's Hardware

The thickness needed is very minimal where a small slit would be able to accommodate the gfx. This could potentially be an interesting niche. I don't say I'll do this in the beginning but I'm open to it later on. Should let the CPU run at full wattage.

if you search for “asus zephyrus duo” and rank by upload date on YouTube, you’ll see a lot of recent (just a few days to today) “reviews” of the old zephyrus with the intel chip...

what are the odds that all these reviewers, in different countries are all finally getting the older model???

My current theory is that intel is trying to spam the “zephyrus duo” keyword before the embargo lifts and the AMD zephyrus starts getting posted on YouTube. So they’re sending the intel based zephyruses.

It’s very spammy and annoying but it’s intel. I wouldn’t put it beyond their marketing teams.

edit: theory is correct. In their description you see the hashtag #ad #intelpartner #intelunleashedrog and of course #ZephyrusDuo -.-

These benchmarks appear to be off, considering it has a Max P version. The numbers are not even comparable to a desktop 3070/2080ti. I suspect the old drivers and the cpu being new are causing the deficiency.

 

I have never been so excited to get a laptop in quite some time!!!! 2-3 weeks left! I have faith it'll be worth the wait

The biggest show stopper for me across all ASUS laptops now is none of them have webcams! I mean whats up with these people! Especially now that every works from home who's great idea was this to remove the webcams from all laptops? I know one could attach an external webcam but I just don't want extra cables hanging and it's very inconvenient.

 

Yeah, at least throw a pluggable one. They can even put it under the screen where there’s some space. Maybe next generation chassis.

Although the 3080 is capped at 130watts it tops the 2080 200watt options in bigger chassis! (jumped to 2:58 in the video)

I'm going to shut my office, and unbox it in silence to fully take it in. Innovation on the chassis and finally no more intel 14nm.
And yes I'm going to get high on that new hardware smell (i think it might be toxic but my pavlovian association that the smell represents new hardware is too strong).

Praying Asus starts shipping them soon so we can get it end of month (God willing)

 

Benchmarks with update/bios updates:


Some considerable improvements.
Warzone is hitting 60fps in 4k 0.0

GPU seems to momentarily peak at 130watts before it comes back down to 120watts.

Hoping for more updates to get us more power (maybe get us more time in the 130watt level).

 

The zephyrus duo can be flashed with a 150w vbios from the GE76 btw. Gives a healthy 15% performance boost

 

If the GE76 can handle, the duo should too.

we may want to try this before the 1 year accidental warranty expires with Asus

 

It does, that's how the zephyrus duo matched a GE76 in 3dmark. 77C vs 55C tho lmao

Seems like the 150watts aren't worth it.... might also hurt the system in the long run.
