I just picked one of these up from Microcenter for $1700.
https://www.microcenter.com/product...504gw-ds74-156-gaming-laptop-computer---black
Temps seem better than last gen, CPU is at the mid-80s stock. Framerates arn't as high as I was expecting though. Seems to be close to my old 1060 laptop. Anyone else get one yet? What kinda fps are getting? -
-
This is on a clean Windows install without any of the ASUS services (aside from the KB lighting and armoury crate), and all the drivers up to date.
I just got some more Windows updates installed (they always trickle in for a couple days for some reason), and it's running a bit faster now, in FH4 at least. Went from mid 60s to low-mid 80s now. I'll try a couple other games and see if they improved as well.
I wish there were more reviews of the RTX laptops to compare with. Also @hodgeMN shoutout from St PaulLast edited: Feb 10, 2019 -
My friend just got one as well, same model, and is getting basically the same framerates in games as me. So at least that rules out my system. However, we spent a good amount of time comparing game tests on the 1070 Scars to the few 2070 test videos we found, and the 1070 comes out ahead by a fair margin in quite a few of the games. So something is definitely not right. Not sure if it's specific to the new Scars or the 2070/RTX laptops in general. I'd say it's an 'early driver' issue, but I find it hard to believe that would have this big of an impact.
EDIT: Strange development. I've discovered that having the laptop plugged into a TV bumps the performance up to the expected level. Forza Horizon 4 went from 70ish to 120 fps in 1080p but was very stuttery, while in 4k it got a smooth solid 60-70 fps. Star Citizen went from 50-70 to 100-135 fps.
I have no idea why this would be, or why FH4 would have the jitters at 120 fps in 1080p.
EDIT 2: My system, stock, got a firestrike score of 15980, in case anyone was wondering what these were getting.Last edited: Feb 11, 2019hodgeMN likes this. -

You should look into the part that compares gaming results with a single stick of ram vs dual-channel RAM. This could explain the poor performance in some titles if yours comes with single channel memory.Last edited: Feb 14, 2019 -
Looking at those numbers though, it's crazy how much of a difference dual-channel makes. I'd be curious to see how it'd be different if he had used 2x8 dual channel instead of doubling the RAM capacity. Not exactly an apple to apple comparison.Last edited: Feb 15, 2019 -
True, but I'm inclined to believe it's the dual-channel part, not the fact that it gets twice the memory. Same results happen with other laptops when adding an extra stick of RAM.
-
I have the GL704GW with the RTX 2070 for three days now, and you are totally right wirh the single channel vs dual. For me the Peeformance difference was huge.

Received this computer yesterday from Gentech and so far very disappointed. Laptop was supposed to come with some free goodies like Asus gamepad, repaste with liquid metal CPU and GPU, and thermal pads. No gamepad provided and thermals are 90-95c on CPU and 90c on GPU. These temps are with fans on turbo and playing call of duty 4. Also paid for Windows install with no bloatware and candy crush and other bloatware on computer. Lastly the backlight bleed is horrendous and the worst I have seen on a laptop (literally).
At this time I personally believe Gentech didn't do anything to the laptop other than install another stick of ram which I paid for. I have emailed Ken from Gentech and waiting to hear back.
I thought Gentech had a good deal for the free repaste and thermal pads however it was too good to be true. Hoping it can be resolved and will update outcome -
Those temps are quite high, my GPU never gets anywhere near 90c. Gentech might have a rep on these forums you can contact for help as well

Just out of curiosity, can someone dig around in your BIOS and see if there's an option to disable Optimus? That seems to be whats causing the lower performance in alot of the RTX models. I would check, but I returned mine already.

Hello!
Can someone provide the thickness of thermal pads to use instead of the ****ty thermal paste on other units than cpu and gpu? -

0.5mm, and cut to your needs. -
From the reviews I’ve seen it runs pretty loud and has very loud fans when gaming, to the people that actually have this laptop find the same temps and fans noise?
The MC deal looks pretty good though.Last edited: Mar 9, 2019 -
I just got mine yesterday at Microcenter, hell of a deal! This is my first gaming laptop ever, I was previously a MacBook Pro kinda guy for laptops but Apple pushed me over the edge with their pricing this time around. I'm used to building my own massive gaming desktops (still do) so this is just for fun and travel. I love it so far, although I am curious if the temps & fan noise are normal for something like this. The CPU hits 95*C and the GPU 78*C while gaming. The machine absolutely rips and it has not shown any signs of stuttering or lagging while gaming. Build quality is outstanding too!

As promised I am following up with my outcome with this computer purchase from Gentech. Received my computer back from Gentech on 3/8. Ken was pleasant to work with and computer was shipped back after a re-paste. Temperature dropped to 87C on CPU which is a 5C plus improvement vs when I initially received it. The GPU stays cooler than the CPU. Included in the return package was the gamepad (free with purchase) that wasn't shipped initially with the computer. Also I was provided the code for a Nvidia game which I picked Battlefield 5. I played the original battlefield 1942 and battlefield 1 and realize I am not as good as I thought at battlefield lol. Back to the computer it is a big improvement vs my prior laptop with a 6700hq and GTX 1060. Some quick scores to share are an overall 7500 score in timespy and 19,700 GPU score in firestrike. In superposition i score 80 FPS running 1080p high test. When all is said and done; I am pleased with the computer as it is now. While I am happy with Gentech doing their best to resolve my issues; I am left wondering if I would have had the same experience with Xotic PC or Hidevolution. If anyone has any questions on this laptop I will do my best to answer.

I am wondering if it's worth going from the GL504GS to the GL504GW?

Here i am, new owner of this baby
-
Good night friends.
I bought a model like that.
I'm having a problem.
After formatting I could not install all the drivers and some programs like ArmouryCrate.
Windows HOME -
Some of the programs are on the Microsoft store. In order for ArmoryCrate to work I believe you need to install the auraservice driver first. What issues are you having exactly?
-
Anybody know what thickness thermal pads to use for these? I know ASUS just slathers paste on everything, but if repasting with Kryonaut anyway, might as well fix that.
-
But I'm still disappointed with the performance of this laptop. It seems to be pretty under powered for a full 2070. My Alienware 51m with a 2060 is performing as well or better in a lot of games.Last edited: Apr 15, 2019 -

Not on the SCAR II. Optimus and G-Sync are mutually exclusive unless a switch is used in the hardware design. So short of just using it with a monitor/tv, your stuck with hybrid.
-
Are there any cooling difference between 15" and 17" models?
-
Finally i ve bought this model.
First of all i would ask: how can i change the colors of keyboard and asus logo?
I cannot see any keboard program!!
Is this option in Armorycrate? -
It is, but the option always disappears after the first reboot, so you have to download the old app from the Microsoft store.
-
For the model GL704GW already exited the bios 305. While the GL504GW is still in the 300
-
I am new owner of GL504GW. And repasted CPU with conductonaut and GPU with kryonaut.
Undervolted CPU core and cache.
Spent the whole day yesterday optimizing the GPU Voltage-Frequency curve in MSI afterburner.
After all these optimizations, I must say the time and effort were well spent.
The performance and temperatures are really good.
Timespy 7722 score (Graphics:7916 CPU:6785) https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/36676024
CPU sits at 79 deg Celcius
GPU sits at 79 deg celcius
At an ambient temperature of 41+ deg Celcius
Also, I got a White Carbon skin from ALIexpress and I must say it looks DAMN SEXY!! ( https://photos.app.goo.gl/YE2yYmk629hQfz6f8 )
Also, I spent a whole day tweaking the GPU voltage curve. So if you want it, I can share it with you. However it might not be stable on your GPU even though it is on mine. -
So their is no MUX(multiplexor switch) on the Asus scar. That means we cannot use the dGPU directly with the built in LCD. For a gaming laptop and one that is 2k dollars isnt that mandatory gaming necessities?
I know for a fact that the new Legion Y740s and even the older models have a mux switch for added performance from running the dGPU directly to the built in LCD. -
However, only a very small percentage of laptops offer that. I don't think price matters here because even $3k laptops don't have it. This laptop still offers a much profound bang for your buck and I think you will get it for even cheaper now as Scar 3 is already out(I still think scar 2 is better due to smaller and lighter footprint). -
here is a better explanation if anyone is interested.
Also, here is a thread that lists laptops that have MUX switches. LINK
Here is another interesting read about it. LinkLast edited: Aug 5, 2019 -

So I was talking to Xotic PC, and they say the Scar 3 has an option in the software to change it.
-
Hi guys, I bought my gl504gw and it stutters when I am playing games like Witcher 3 and BF1. Does anyone have the same problem?
Last edited: Aug 21, 2019 -
Nope. Check the CPU/GPU temps. It's most probably the CPU that throttles heavily
-
I'm trying to play Jedi Fallen order and put on MSI Afterburner to check my temps and my GPU is at 86c pretty fast then throttling. Can someone share with me their CPU and GPU undervolt settings? I've already done a repaste on the CPU and GPU.

The specs you have listed include 1x mDP 1.4, but I've seen 1.2 and 1.4 listed in different places for the same model. Can anyone confirm it is mDP 1.4?
