What program can I use to monitor the temps of the HD 5730? I installed ati gpu tool but it said my sensors are disabled and it is not visable with everest.

I will give that a try when I get home. Thanks. I just thought it was odd the the ati gpu tool reports that the sensors aren't active.

    Yes, that's strange.
I think tarlyn was able to read the GPU temperatures using everest also.

I can not tell you which tool will really work. I am still waiting for my N71JQ to arrive. :(

The only thing that I can think of is the bios which I haven't gone into yet to poke around. Possibly the difference in the n61 over the n71.

I got roughly 780/1000 but 760 was much more stable for me but each card will vary a bit.

Ya I am able to see the GPU temp on Everest Ultimate which was a free download and the AMD GPU Tool which shows 3 temps but only the 1st one shows a valid temp. You do have to click the enable box and the start button to see the Temp on AMD GPU Tool.

    Hi Jovani,

How did you decide between G73 and N71? I'm aware of the techical differences between the two ... i think.
The truth is either one offers more than I need .

    Thanks in advance,

So kind of annoying I got a stuck pixel today in the top left section of the screen.....tried a few things to fix it but no luck so far.

It's only one and you dont noticed it on 90% of the stuff you do but annoying nonetheless heh.

I know how you feel. I've had one on my TV since I bought it. But since they won't replace it for just one I've had to deal with it.

Well I have a 30 bright pixel warranty I believe but for all the hours I have put into setting it up and the time involved in shipping it back and forth and whether Gentech has another N71 floating around not sure I am going to pursue it but maybe I will.

If I were you I'd probably just go ahead and send it back. I know it seems hard now to think about having to lose all those hours in setting it up again, not to mention the fact that you have to send it back and wait for the new one to arrive. But the way I look at it is that at least it doesn't cost me anything and a few months from now it will be long over with and I won't have to worry about whether or not I should have sent it back or not when I first noticed the dead pixel.

well i received my machine today, and i have to say im pleased. i agree it runs pretty cool. ill probably download some monitoring programs to see what numbers im getting at some point. wireless is working fine for me, but its an old linksys wireless g router that im using tonight. ran the game ill probably play the most for now, civ 4, and it ran great (of course its not very demanding).

certainly a step up from my business class hp that i bought mid 2005.

sorry to hear about your screen. if it was me id probably send it back too. i wouldnt be happy about it though. better to get it fixed while you can. i dont know much about lcd screens, but could it be a sign that your screen is faulty and could develop more problems?

Sorry to hear about your problem. :(
If you want to send it back, I advice you to make an image of your system so that when you get the new one you can put the image on.
Then you will not lose the time you spent on tweaking it and installing all the different softwares.

I have the "barebone" version of this lappy, the X77JQ. No bag or mouse.
I want to upgrade to 8GB RAM from 4GB.
Can I use 1333MHZ DIMMs instead of 1066MHZ DIMMs without issues?

    Thanks for your time!

you can use 1333 modules, but they will work at 1066 unless you replace all of them with 1333

    Good to hear. :)
Maybe it was not a dead pixel then.
Sometimes due to some program crash or so. There could be some issue with desktop refresh and some part of some image stayed there.

I had such issues sometimes. For example one time my notebook displayed a red line on the desktop. After I logged off it disappeared. :)

I found this new video review of N71JQ on youtube.
The video shows some more details, but it is in other language.

Eh the vertical isnt great as when I was sick for a few days laying on the couch I had to adjust it a few times when watching a movie....horizontal seems fine although I generally sit right in front so not much of an issue there either way.

Yea, so u guyes remember i had problems with my N71JQ, guess what, got a brad new one from asus, worked for 2 hours... i reinstalled everything, tweaked windows, etc and now i try to start it and nothing! Took the battery out, tried just with power supply, tried leaving it there without any source of power for 20 minutes, then plugged it in, still nothing. Once i got to the Asus boot screen but that was it.
The replacement i got is also DOA.

Man im not lucky, first a Studio XPS 16 DOA, now two N71JQ... !

Oh yea, and the replacement i got from asus was damaged (the plastic) right beside the power button, the mesh kind of fabric is all bent down like someone damaged it. A piece of plastic is also chipped from the side, the screen was opened at the bottom, like a split. I mean what is going on ... i've been 3 weeks dealing with issues after issues. Hope they get it right this time. Can't wait for the RMA guy to call me back within 2 hours ! Ill ask for a direct DOA... get a laptop to my door by the end of the week and pickup the old one at the same time.

You guyes have no issues with the hardware right ???

Sorry for the long post ! ;)

I went with the N71, 1st DOA, got replacement, DOA, now waiting for a call from Asus to fix this Again... I think I'm the only one that had such problems tho. Hope you have better luck ;)

Ok, can't wait to get a working one, seems like a nice machine !! ;)

ok wow, i got pissed off waiting for asus to call so i opened up the bottom of the laptop, swapped the hard drives and the ram and voila, it works, i don't understand !!

The laptop has a small dent right beside the power button and the right side of the screen is not perfectly aligned ... u guys think i should exchange it anyways to get a perfect one?

From your description it looks as it was damaged in transport.

I got my N71JQ and everything seemed good till I checked for my 500gb 2nd harddrive. It does not show up in my computer but does in device manager. I tried reformatting it and everything but no matter what I do it will not allow me to assign it a drive letter and I can only reformat it using 3rd party software.

Guess I am going to pull the drive today and send the drive back to Xotic PC. Just sucks waiting so long for this machine only to wait even longer to send the drive back and THEN for them to send me a replacement. It seems like these kind of things should have been tested when they installed the drive.

The SSD seems to work very fast though and gets a almost perfect rating in windows and starts up in just a few seconds.

Just called Xotic PC customer support after they sent me a e-mail and looks like they will ship out a new harddrive to me soon.

Besides the fact one of my harddrives was DOA seems like a great computer and great company in Xotic PC.

Yea, i will exchange it. When the computer goes to sleep and then i open it up again. the fan goes on Full throttle and never slows down. i then have to shutdown completely (power off). Also, it only shows 2gig of ram on CPUz, im guessing there is a defective ram chip. I can also still hear the cpu whine ( high pitch noise) !

They haven't called me back yet ! will call back in 1h when i get home ! Getting sick and tired of this ! I just lost another day because "no agents were available" last night at 9pm ... great 24h service ...

Weird, i've never had such bad luck with asus products.

I think Risco wanted to direct this question to me. :)
Well so far the total costs is $1,529. The notebook is for $1,355.00 with shipping costs of $149 and $25 for intel 5100 card.

I have still not received it. I don't know how much I would have to pay for tax.

The notebook is shipped since 11th of Febrauary. The last status from USPS tracking is from 13th Febraury which say item was shipped out of USA.
I currently don't know where it could be. USPS does not seem to update their tracking status so often. :(
I hope I will receive it by next week.

So finally the notebook has reached Germany.

DHL which is the local carrier of the package says it is with customs now.
I may still have to wait a few more days for it to be cleared from the customs office.
I think I will most probably get a postcard from customs office to go there and pick it up.

I found this forum while researching the N71JQ-A1. I'd like to say thanks to everyone that has purchased this laptop and contributed information. It has been a big help in narrowing down my options and finding a place that sells this model.

I'm looking to purchase a laptop for the first time. It will be used mostly for software development with gaming also highly important but not a priority. This model seems to fit my needs nearly perfectly.

My only concern is that I have not found any information on its multi-Display capabilities. Has anyone tried using an HDMI->DVI adapter and connecting two monitors using the DVI and VGA connectors at the same time? I'm interested to know if you can run both monitors at the monitor's native resolution. It would be even better if you can run the two monitors and the laptop screen at the same time, but I would be happy if it can at least do two monitors at native resolutions.

From my experience with ASUS Laptops, I can tell you that it usually works well by connecting external monitor to HDMI output.
I am doing it all the time with my M50VM. I think it would work the same way with N71JQ. I am still waiting for N71JQ to test it.
I have an external 1900x1600 monitor connected all time with HDMI to DVI adapter.
I mostly use only the extrenal screen. I have also tested both intenal and extrenal monitor with Extended/Clone mode and that also works.

I only tried once to connect VGA output to digital monitor. The quality of the picture with the VGA signal was not as good as DVI.
The VGA I usually only use it to connect to overhead projector.

Thank you for the information. I'm glad to hear you can run at greater than 1080p from the HDMI, but I'm specifically concerned about being able to run two external monitors at the same time. I understand the VGA quality will suffer, but my goal is to have dual external monitors. My understanding is that some laptops can do this, but usually the laptop screen is cloned to the second monitor. I'm ok if it only allows two displays, as long as when I use two external monitors they can both run at full resolution. It would be a problem if the second monitor is locked to the laptop resolution. It would be great if all three monitors (two external + laptop monitor) can work at the same time and each show something different.

The ATI chips are supposed to be able to support up to 6 displays, but this may have been reduced for the laptop models. The ATI website seems to indicate that laptop versions could limit to two displays, just not sure what exactly this means. Does this mean one external + laptop, or maybe two external but one is locked to laptop resolution, or maybe two external but laptop screen is disabled? Would really like to know.

Well I am not sure if all the three monitors will run in parallel.
If I get the time maybe I can test it for you.
At home, I have 23" Samung LCD TV with VGA input (1366 x 768), as well as a Samsung LCD monitor with resolution of 1680x1050.
I can try to connect both of them in parallel to my notebook screen to see if this will work.
I can test it maybe tomorrow, but with M50Vm (GPU is nVidia GS 9600m). I have not received my N71JQ yet. :(

Can any of you guys kindly post some screenshots of WOW on the N71? If WOW does not support 1600*900 or N71JQ can't run it smoothly on this resolution, that almost defeat the whole purpose of buying it. :D

    Thanks in advance.

My account is currently canceled but I did load it up and it does support 1600x900 resolution.....it will run it fine...I have ran it on much lesser systems and it runs fine as well......no idea why everyone is always freaked out if systems will run WoW.....seems strange to me.

    @ SakePerez
Sorry, I think I will not be able to test for you the setup with two external monitors.
I could not find the VGA cable which came with my monitor. :(
I have not used the VGA connection in very long time.
It maybe somewhere burried under the stuff in the basement.

Thanks for the effort Turbogear. I think I may go ahead and get this model. If no one posts about it's multi-Display capabilities I'll be sure to update you guys when I get mine.
