I don't have this issue, and I'm plugged in almost constantly when using my N71JQ-X1.
My fan idles at the same speed on both battery power and when plugged in, at least until I play a resource intensive game, then it kicks up a bit until a minute or so after I'm done playing my game.
My fan is also very quiet, I can't even hear it until it kicks up while gaming.
-
Regards the fan ramping, has anyone checked the taskmanager and see if there is any abnormal cpu usuage?
-
Risco -- Yeah I've been checking out my CPU usage. It's idling now between 1-5% and the fan problem persists.
Just spent 45 minutes on the phone with Asus trying to fix the fan problem and couldn't figure anything out. I guess I'll be sending my computer in for repair -- a very depressing thought considering how long it takes me to get everything set up to my liking.
Ah well! Unless anybody has some bright ideas as to what could be causing this I'll be shipping her off tomorrow or Monday. -
i did the whole ai recovery. my 80 gb ssd has 74 gb usable less 12 gb that is in a hidden partition, so i ended up with 62 gb usable in my op sys drive c:. before i did anything, i had to open the back and remove the 320 gb drive--the ai recovery process wouldn't work with two drives in the machine. on a good note, i did not have to uninstall ms office. i already have a version on my desktop, and was able to plug in my number to utilize what was installed as a "test" on the asus.
the computer is unbelievably fast, and the monitor is unbelievable sharp and clear. and it is more quiet then my desktop. but i haven't done much with it yet. it is going to take me a couple days to get all programs installed and everything set up the way i like it. i'll report if i have any more issues. -
I am sure I will do a clean install of windows when I get it. I have an oem copy of office for home and students with multiple licenses. I should be good for that...I think.
what else came in the box?
also do you know if yours shipped with 1333mhz mem or 1066? some n71's have had the 1333 in it as stock I have heard. not a big deal to me. just curious. -
How is the sound quality for the N71JQ laptop? I have heard mixed reviews about them. Some claim that you have to turn the volume to the highest settings to even obtain a normal volume level?
I am interested in purchasing the N71JQ-X1 yet I am worried about the volume on this laptop.
Also, I had the chance to test out the G51JX-X3 model at a local Best buy and could not hear much from the speakers on the highest settings.
Does Asus really skimp on the quality of the sound for there laptops?
N71JQ Owners, can you all provide some feedback.
Thanks! -
I see nothing in the bios that can be adjusted. I have tried the 'passive' and 'active' fan settings under the Power4gear advanced settings to no avail.
There is a Speedfan program app., but I have not tried that.
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php -
mines doing it again def to do with adding the RAM but why? although it does keep the GPU 10 degrees cooler when underload. I dont mind the noise I just dont like that it happened all of a sudden will it wear the fan out quicker? I noticed the exhaust is so much cooler. before it was always pretty warm minus the noise but noise vs heat hmm.. maybe its suppose to of been like this from the start wat was everyones like when they first cranked em up. I know I didnt even hear my fan and had a trickle of airflow. GPU sat at 67 underload and cores where around 38. and the speed fan app doesnt work.

I received an email from XoticPC yesterday stating Asus has updated the RAM on new orders now. Which basically means is now they are shipped with the original 1066 RAM
.
My order which is being shipped out tomorrow from XoticPC will have the 1066 RAM.
So those that got this in early, u lucky s.

Hey guys, regarding the annoying fan problem -- Amazon's wonderful customer service just informed me that they'll send me a new replacement unit with overnight shipping tomorrow, so I should have that by Saturday. I'll post back here to let you guys know if the fan runs better on that unit.
-
I'm writing on it now, btw. I'm really stoked! I can see why the fan would irritate some. It does come on at regular intervals. But for me it is quieter than the hard drive of my current desk top, so it doesn't bother me as much. -
I'm not sure what is on offer via other laptops, but I'm listening to music right now and it is crystal clear and sharp. I'm honestly surprised at how pleasant the sound is.
As a test, after reading your post, I turned it up as loud as it would go and, frankly, you wouldn't hear it on the other side of the house. So, I think if you like your music REALLY loud, you would have to get speakers. -
-
Back on page 27 or so of this thread was a link to newer drivers for Power4gear. I installed those...no difference. -
-
Hey Guys
Quick question....I know this is a 17" laptop but mobility-wise (inside the house), is it pretty much too much of a doorweight to carry around?
My wife has been using my 15" HP business laptop (from work) and grown accustomed to the weight/size and now I'm not sure if the N71 will be a huge change as far as mobility is concerned.
Thanks -
I am wondering if anyone has seen an extended life battery for the N71?
-
So if you plan on purchasing this for your wife, you might want to take her usage into consideration. If she does mostly web/email/light work she might find the N71 to be too big. -
I just want to point out that my wife keeps telling me its not all about the size.
-
Just got my N71JQ-X1 this morning!!! I will post a review after a couple days of use. -
-
I still haven't found the correct answer, so anyone with a n71...what are the dimensions? is 16.5 in wide or 18.4 in wide?
-
These are the dimensions from the Asus website
42.0 x 28.4 x 3.70~4.10 cm (W x D x H)
which translates to 16.54 x 11.18 x 1.46~1.61 -
yeah. but why do most websites list it as 18.4? maybe they converted wrong. just as long as it fits in my bag i have. -
I asked earlier in the thread but does anyone know if there are larger batteries out for the N71? -
-
-
im curious if anyone has successfully gotten hydravision to work on their n71jq-x1/a1every time it gives me an error popup saying "HYDRAVISION will only run when an ATI display driver is loaded. An ATI display driver is not currently detected on your system."
-
Is there any way to turn off the "zoom" gesture on the touchpad? I usually use a mouse, but whenever I have to use my touchpad I'm constantly zooming in and out of web pages by accident when I really just want to scroll.
Edit: Nevermind, I had the driver but couldn't figure out how to use it. Just figured it out in control panel mouse options, in case anyone else is annoyed by this. Also, there's some cool gestures that I didn't realize I had, especially the alt+tab equivalent (tap three fingers, move them down till the alt+tab windows box opens, then move one of those fingers side to side to select the windows you want). -
-Turned off hibernate
-have changed fan mode from 'active' to 'passive' or 'passive' to 'active'
No change at all.
Figured I try installing Asus SmartDoctor...didn't recognize graphic card.
Hmmmm....... -
I made a post about the fan over on the Asus support forum: http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...board_id=3&model=N71Jq&page=1&SLanguage=en-us
So far everyone who has replied says they have the same problem. I wonder if there's any chance of Asus fixing this via some firmware update in the future. (Just wondering aloud, I know that nobody here knows.) I could wait, but I'm gonna be pretty upset if this is the state of my new computer from here on out. -
SmartDoctor is got Asus desktop graphics cards
-
-
Beside SmartDoctor read some specific info from the GPU bios, and even on Desktop machines it only works on ASUS GPUs or other GPUs that have ASUS bios flashed on them.
To control the speed of the notebook fan we need a program like Notebook Hardware Control (NHC).
Besides, I used to notice this fan ON/OFF only in the beginning. Now somehow it seems my ears got adapted to it though I am also working in very quiet environment. It seems I am too busy all the time and seems not to be paying attention to the noise anymore.
Though it would be nice if ASUS in the future releases a new bios with a better fan speed profile. A dynamic profile would be better. -
Those that ordered from XoticPC, how long before they shipped the N71 out?
Mine went in 'testing' last Mon and I was told it was gonna get shipped on Thursday to nothing yet. Sent another email to Justin today in the morning and haven't heard back from him yet.
I know XoticPC is 100% legit but not happy with the delay and zero communication right now :-(. -
Confirmed. You and the other poster are quite correct. I will admit a brain fart with regards to fan on laptop GPU.
-
-
^ Thanks...
Justin replied back to my email and said it's shipping later today or early tomorrow. -
-
OK
Here's a solution I just figured out.
- Go into your Power Options in control panel
- Change advanced power settings
- Scroll down to 'ATI graphics settings'
- Under ATI Power Play Settings for 'Plugged in' change to 'maximize battery life'
- Hit apply
FAN IS NOW Normal.
How this effects performance is unknown.
Weird!
I also posted this at Asus forum. -
You can't play games with those clocks! -
Basically a workaround till someone figures out a fix. -
I'm still thinking about ordering this model but wonder about the cycling fan problem. I've followed this issue here and on the Asus forum and it seems like quite a few of you have been experiencing this for some time now and several have contacted Asus. One would have thought that Asus would have addressed it by now.
-
-
My better half likes my old Toshiba for it's portability, but has no problem using my N71JQ around the house, and she's a small-framed person.
I doubt your wife will have an issue with the size and weight of this notebook.
If you ask me, people are over-analyzing the "problem" and, quite possibly, aren't used to the cooling solutions provided by such powerful notebooks.
I could be wrong, but I've seen this kind of thing before.. and it would explain why Asus hasn't addressed the issue - since they seem like a very hands-on company. -
Hi All,
I just got a N71JQ and found this forum from the Asus Forum.
I personally believe that the fan cycling issue is normal operation as stated above. My old Sager did the same thing, but it was much louder with a anoying whine. Do not get me wrong I would like it better if it were slient, but that is an unrealistic expectation. It is not hard to guss that the fan is thermal controlled and is not variable speed. It would be better if it could run at half or three quaters speed, but it really is not that load for a maching with this kind of power.
On a different note; I saw a post earlier in this thread that talked about RAID. I do not see any BIOS settings for that. Am I missing something?
Thanks for any further info and I will keep reading.

I went back through this thread and found what I thought is true. This intel chipset does not support RAID. I went with my origanl plan and upgraded my primary drive to a SSD, now my notebook runs like my desktop WOW!
Back to the fan thing: I upgraded my primary HD to a WD SiliconEdge SSD and reinstalled Win7. This time I left out Power4Gear when I installed the drivers. Now the fan runs for longer periods of time and at a lower rpm so it is not as loud. Problem solved AFAIK. Someone earlier in this thread found updated ATK drivers and Power4Gear S/W on a german site, but I will just leave things alone, because now I am very happy with it.
This is a great thread, it makes me even more glad I bought my N71JQ-A1.

well, I got mine finally from UPS. had to will call it.
loading, unloading, etc...forgot how long it takes...havent noticed the fan issue. or maybe it is not bothering me.
