Just got myself a G74SX with pretty much the default setup. I just added 8more GB of ram to max it up and a 500gb hdd I had around the house. It came with 8g ram and a 750g hdd.

Installed the Intel 6300N and I'm setting it up as I type :)

The sound is pretty messed up on it but meh, not gonna listen on it much. I have my headphones for when gaming.

What should be a normal temperature for the cpu? Not sure if I need to clean it or maybe change the thermal paste.

I haven't been using my g74 very heavy, actually I'm just in the middle of prepping for ssd install and clean win7. However I noticed the battery seems to self discharge rather quickly. Last used the laptop Monday night and today it's at 86%...thats almost 5% drop each day. Seems a bit high for a realtively new battery. Is this normal??

Check your Power Options under the Control Panel and make sure your power button and shutdown are set to shutdown the laptop.

As the above poster has also asked, did you by chance have it set in sleep or hibernate at all? This would relate to my above suggestion as well to check your power settings.

How long have you owned your G74?

The start menu option which I normally use is set to "Shut Down".
In power settings, close lid = hibernate and power/sleep button = sleep.

Bought the laptop back in late December but only started using it more since last month
Currently on BIOS 201 and will be updating later tonight in preparation for my ssd install.

Be sure you are shutting it down completely then and watch it for the next few days for the battery drain. I can't say for sure whether or not it would be considered normal, but do keep an eye on it. If it worsens, I would recommend seeing about an RMA, I believe you should be covered for 1 year for the battery.

Keep us updated on your upgrading and the battery status.

Hi all. Does anyone know where to get a port saver for the DC side of the power supply? I find myself plugging/unplugging it quite often (leaving the p/s plugged into the wall) and want to avoid socket probs.

Sorry in advance if this is asked/answered can't seem to get search to fly and after ~50 pages I ran out of gas.

I replaced with an Intel 6230 and it works great. Dual band WiFi and Bluetooth also. Fairly low-cost at around $20 USD.
Had to uninstall the Asus Wireless Console since it's designed for a WiMax/WiFi card, but everything including the WiFi LED and Fn shortcut works fine without it.

I've had this G74SX for a little over a year and I love it.
I did install a 240GB SSD drive when I got it and then later upgraded to a 480GB SSD SATA 3 drive. finally got my 7.9 WEI score on the HDD from 7.7 from the old SSD.
I also found a good deal on some g-skill 16GB kits DDR3 1333 memory so I got 2 of those as they were 2x 8GB per kit for $65/kit a few weeks ago off of newegg with a coupon code as well. so now I have full 32GB RAM. wei score did not change on the memory and remains at 7.6 as the old memory I had was the same type but only 16GB total (4x4GB)

Then I noticed the G75 came out a while back. I originally had the G73, sold it and got the G74 for a little more. now I am thinking whether I should sell the G74 and get a G75?
what do you guys think? I noticed the G75 went back with the memory under the keyboard style that the G73 had which I do not like as it is not easy to get all of my 32GB installed in it and I am not sure what the noise levels are like. The G73 was somewhat noisy. the G74 is less noisy than the G73 but I am unsure of the G75.
Any input would be appreciated :)

    Thanks.

g75 is lighter than 74 and smaller. looks wise both look good and spec wise g75 is better, at least the graphics card. there have been people talking about new ivy creates more heat than sandy even though its a smaller die cpu, but it prob doesnt really matter in the asus laptop because their cooling system is well made.

i dont know why you need 32gb of memory, its simply for brag rights. even with video/audio edit 16gb is plenty, if not then 24 should be even enough for professional level, unless of course you want 16gb size of ramdisk, but then you already have SSD so you probably dont need ramdisk.

btw, 240gb SSD is faster than 480gb, wei score dont mean jack tbh yet another for brag rights. but from what you said, you probably gotten yourself a SATA3gbps 240gb SSD and i would assume 480gb is SATA6gbps, then in most cases newer gen SSD is better.

just to let you know though, writing to SSD by saving tons and tons of file with file transfer will kill your drive. of course with 480gb being slower than 240gb size theres already the problem ontop of that more files you store on SSD the slower it gets.

again, know the product and know what computer really needs and what YOUR needs are. WEI dont mean sh*t, period.

AND finally, if you really really REALLY desperate and want 7.9 on everything, you can't. because ASUS is limited by their graphics card. you'll need dual channel memory (2x4gb) corsair vengeance or kingston hyperx 1866mhz ram PnP to get 7.9. you'll need at least a single HIGHLY overclockd 6990m or 580m to have a shot at 7.9, or you need to get a single 680m and 7970m which asus G series dont support them.

as for CPU, its currently not possible as window7 WEI is biased however in windows 8 they fix it quite a bit but still biased. currently if you want to reach 7.9, you need extreme processor 3920xm or 3940xm or sandy 2960xm and overclock them to 4.6-4.8ghz on all 4 cores to have a shot at wei score 7.9, and currenly only alienware laptop support such high clocked OC while running at stable temperature.

for SSD WEI, you need to get anything that has high 4k read and 4k write. any current gen SSD will reach that easily ONLY if you dont have too much files on it. with so much file it slows down TRIM and they take longer to work, same with garbage collection. try sandisk extreme 240gb SSD or intel 520 or plextor m3Pro.

thanks for the info. It wasn't my goal to get 7.9 on everything, i know it would be impossible on such a laptop. I was just saying that the SSD went there and that was it. And yes I know it went there only because the new drive was SATA 3 while the older one was SATA 2.

as far as the 32 GB ram I create a lot of virtual machines with different memory hungry applications so while the 16GB ram was nice the 32 is much, much better.

and about the TRIM slowdown I was aware of the issue, I do have a secondary HDD (1 TB) installed in the second bay and most slow download writes are done to that anyway. but I figured that since I leave the laptop on all day and night then TRIM has time to recover while the system is idle anyway. I did disable indexing, defrag, super-fetch and system restore to alleviate windows constantly hitting the drive every few seconds as it does by default.

As for the WEI score, you could just edit the xml files and set whatever score your dirty mind comes up with...

i have a g74sx and i've read on asus chats that the cursors jump around.
i saw several suggested work arounds, but the main message seemed to be an engineering snafu & to wait for asus to come up with an update, which hasn't materialized...yet.
i did get a mouse which helps & i do disable my track pad via fn f9, and that is vital.
but when i'm typing text, my cursor occasionally hops up to another part of the paragraph. this is most annoying. i must watch what i type all the time. when i forget, i have to cut & paste the errant words that have hoped elsewhere. sometimes it's the cursor that hops, but sometimes the page jumps once or twice, so that makes the position of the cursor change too, even though the cursor is still in the same place on the screen. i do not know why the screen jumps, it's not a user command.
does anyone else have this syndrome. any clues anyone?

I've found that the function key to disable the trackpad does not work well.

Go into trackpad settings and set it so that it disables if an external mouse is connected. That won't automatically do it necessarily, so unplug and re-plug your external mouse. That should work.

It's definitely the trackpad that's making your cursor jump.

I had to get a separate keyboard and mouse it works great for me. G74SX will not get any new updates so you have to deal with it the same as me. I hope I helped.
