yes thank you Ive already tried that, the driver is up to date. Ive also uninstalled the Optical Drive so Windows would recognized it as new and reinstall it, its been done and problem still shows up. I come from realizing something, I launched Express Gate for the first time this morning and introduced the DVD (gaming DVD) and the Optical Drive run smoothly, without the sound that it makes when I use it in Windows. So maybe the problem Is especifically Windows? I was wondering also if there was anyway to Install a game From like, BIOS? out of Windows problem maybe. Thanks in advance!

There is no way to install games from BIOS, I believe you are referring to DOS though, and unfortunately, DOS has not been available really since XP days if I'm not mistaken.

It sounds like your DVD drive may not be working correctly at all. The other suggestion, if you haven't tried it, is to reload the OS and all of the drivers if you haven't already done so. It seems really strange that it isn't recognizing specific files. If you have tried that, see if you can get a replacement DVD-ROM and try that out.

I've been having some issues with my G74, and was hoping someone could chime in. Temperatures while gaming almost always sit above 70 degrees, and people have been experiencing these temperatures after overclocking, so me being at stock clocks, I'm a bit concerned. I've installed 8GB more RAM, and a 2nd hard drive, but I don't see how they could increase temperatures drastically. While playing games, I'll get some studdering sometimes, which is usually because of heat, so I need to figure something out with this. Any tests I could do to see if I've got a problem somewhere?

I heard that I need to buy a new Windows license if I wanna get rid of the bloatware by doing a clean Windows install. Any truth in that?

None whatsoever! :D As long as you install the same edition of Windows that shipped with the computer, you can use your existing product key to activate it.

Specifically, you want an OEM version of Windows Home Premium (assuming Home Premium came with your G74).

At 1080p, the 128-bit bus will definitely make a difference. Ideally, you'd want the full 192-bit bus for 1080p. That isn't to say that everything will run like crap, but you'll definitely get less performance.

Getting a G74SX-XT1 tonight once UPS drops it off. Got it from Tiger Direct for $1200. Also got a Seagate Momentus XT 500gb hybrid drive and a Corsair Vengeance 4GB DDR3 1600MHz SODIMM. Hopefully the memory's compatible with computer, I used the crucial adviser tool and it said it was. I understand it'll probably only use 1333mhz or something, as long as it work's I'll be happy. This is replacing a Sony Vaio F115fm/b which I am trying to get to work properly, got fed up trying to get it to boot and saw this on the site and the specs for price really wowed me. Cannot wait to get this bad boy up and running.

Hey G74 owners. I have a question for you.

I'll likely buy the G75 when it arrives. I know it shares with the G74 that kind of rubberized coating on either side of the trackpad and on the back of the LCD screen/lid. How does that coating hold up to wear? If you type a lot, does it wear out under where your wrist sits? Does the cover pick up and show greasy fingerprints easily? Can you clean it? How does it wear overall?

    Thanks in advance.

It's generally not a good idea to mix RAM modules of different speeds. If you get any signs of incompatibility....freezing, blue screens, etc....the first step would probably be to exchange that 1600MHz mode for a module that matches the ones that come in your machine.

    Enjoy you new laptop. :D

Definitely picks up prints and oils....like a magnet! Although you can clean it up pretty well with a damp cloth, and a little soap if necessary, it often looks kind of grubby because the fingerprints and palm prints are so visible.

I don't think anyone has owned a G74 long enough to evaluate the long-term durability of the rubberized coating, but so far, it seems to hold up okay. I would expect it to eventually wear in those areas you mentioned. All laptops seem to.

Just a suggestion for when the 2nd one comes: You might want to use it and test all the hardware for a few days before you start altering and updating the software installation. It's easier to diagnose things like a failed touchpad ground, glitchy keyboard....and busted speakers!....before the issues are possibly confounded with software changes.

    Hi guys,
I just recently got myself a G74 and today some keyboard shortcuts stopped working. I can't turn on the backlight on the keyboard fn+f4 but I can change screen brightness fn+f6 but again I can't change the volume fn+f10. Any ideas what happened or how to fix it? Any help will be appreciated.

    Try this:
    • Download ATK Package v1.0.0014
    • In Control Panel, uninstall the existing ATK Package
    • Reboot
    • Install ATK Package 1.0.0014
The "what happened" part is probably that some component(s) of the ATK driver package got messed up and aren't loading properly. The ATK drivrs control the special keys operation....but the driver's kind of a mess and gets corrupted/screwy fairly easily.

hey brodyboy its been long time since i came back here for g74sx.

tbh ive been getting laptops everywhere lol currently have like 6 laptops >.<, and waiting for m18x r2, p270 and g75 series. i saw the video g75 series, i liked the idea how its all usb 3.0 ports but i think its still single graphic laptop, 2 harddrive slots correct?

also if you know anything about the outer design it'd be great. it seems its all around plastic just like g74sx, i would hope if it would be metal instead of plastic, or partial metal.

Yes, I believe it'll be single graphic with two hard drive bays. If you mean that you hope it's a metal rather than plastic chassis, that won't happen. It will be plastic, like they all are, with some sort of finish. That finish may mimic rubber or metal, but it will still be plastic.

I don't have a link handy, but there's been substantial discussion (with photos and videos :D) in a separate G75 thread here on the forum. I'm sure you won't have to hunt much to find it.

It really depends on the polymer used. My G73 and N50 have been holding up quite well so far and that includes carrying them every day to university. 2 years of carrying for the N50 and the chassis is still in very good conditions, bar a few scratches and the G73 has been holding up very well for over a year too.

Considering ASUS G74SX-DH71 form ExcaliburPC as desktop replacement and gaming. Unless you know a better store. Don't need a subwoofer. Don't need a 3D display. Don't need a blueray burner yet.

Its the model with 2 750 gig HDs. Can those 2 750 gig HDs be setup as RAID 0? Or would it be better to have the SSD and HD combo? Data is backed up online so looking for a performance gain.

Does this have the 192bit bus the 560m is supposed to have?

If the ASUS laptops cannot be setup in RAID 0 then I may as well save money and go with the G74SX-AH71 on Amazon.com.

You can only use software RAID on the G74...there's no hardware RAID support in the BIOS.

If the specs say it has 3Gb of video RAM, then it's a configuration with a 192bit video bus.

No blueray player on the AH71... found for $1270 on Amazon though. Already have a PS3 which is mostly for playing bluerays.

Just bought the ASUS G74SX-DH72 from ExcaliburPC for $1,939. They had only 1 in stock. Has everything so I won't want to shop for upgrades. Will use as is until I can't.

    @Brodyboy

Hi, You were a big help on the ROG forum when it "worked".

You offered to help with a walkthrough for a clean install win7 64bit on a g74.

You PMed a very clear pdf concerning the essential drivers to download...

Then I could not login to the forum anymore...and then it went down.

Could you send the 'second instalment' of pdf walkthrough for a clean instal pls ?

    Very gratefull,

Hi. I'm planning to buy the Asus g74. I have a question is every g74 capable of outputting a stereoscopic 3d signal even if its without the 3d screen? Because 3d on the laptops screen is not that important to me as outputting the signal especialy via the VGA (maybe I could use a HDMI->VGA converter). I need it for a projector ( Optoma ML300). It is capable of pc 3d so a 120Hz signal via VGA. I would mostly use it for 3d in my bedroom. Would be cool on a 50" screen (max for this projector and 3d, normal picture up to 160"!!). If anyone has any experience please share.

Hi. Does anyone know if the Intensity Shuttle works with the USB 3.0 that is in the G74SX? I have the Fresco Logic xHCL controller in mine and would like to use the Shuttle with a program called Grand VJ for live HDMI camera acquisition shown on a projection screen in real time.

Does anybody know what causes this problem? I got a G74SX with the Seagate Momentus XT 500gb hybrid drives and I was curious about the performance so I fired up HD Tune and it came back with a bunch of errors on the health page, I downloaded SeaTools from Seagate and it says all is ok and the laptop seems to work fine too. I took my comp back to the retailer and asked about this and they simply replaced the laptop saying it must be a HDD fault but the replacement laptop does the same. Anybody heard of a problem like this or could recommend any other checking tools to check if anything might really be wrong.

    Hello G74SX owners

    Do you play BF3?
Can you tell me what settings and resolution you use in BF3? I want to find some good settings that could make me play with ~50+fps, I don't care if its low settings/resolution.

One more question, my games/nvidia panel does not show resolutions like 1600x900 (only 1600x1024) is it normal? And if I create a custom resolution like this one 1600x900 in nvidia panel, it would work as good as the non custom ones or it means that my screen isn't meant to run such resolutions?

    Regards

Hello, I've had my G74SX-XT1 for a week and a half now. I've read some posts on the rog forum with some users having an issue with horizontal lines on the screen. Well it appears I also have this issue. They are only visible usually on very very dark or solid backgrounds, or textures with very dark coloring. My question is...is this normal? Is anyone else experiencing this apart from me? And is there a way I can fix it? From what I've read, no one seems to have found a fix for this. It's not a major issue for me, but it can be annoying at times since I spent a lot of money on it.

I'll add that my graphics drivers are up to date. If anyone knows what I can do to fix this, it would be much appreciated, and any feedback would be appreciated as well

Quick update...I followed another user's advice foud here on the ROG forums. There seems to be an issue with the later drivers, and reverting to the 285.79 driver solved the horizontal line issue for me. It sucks that I had to downgrade my driver, but at least I don't see those annoying lines anymore.

If anyone else has/had this problem with the 290 drivers, and found a fix, please feel free to share, or if you haven't found a fix, feel free to try the work around posted in the above link.

Anyone know if Asus has fixed the throttling issue? Having a computer with a quad-core i7, a GTX560M, and 16GB of 1866MHz RAM that can't constantly handle The Old Republic is a bit depressing.

I see one on eBay right now, but it's not clear whether it includes the SATA connector and cable. You may want to contact that seller and see if he can source the whole package.

Alternately, you can order the parts from the Asus eStore or the European AsusParts store.

Link? Sorry, I don't see it. And I've had the set on order from AsusParts since February and still waiting fulfillment from Asus. The Estore does not currently have the parts either, just the ribbon cable and caddy. No SATA connector.

Sorry....I thought I'd included the link. Here it is.

If you're really in a hurry to get one of these and that eBay option doesn't work out, shoot me a PM. (I think you need 5 posts before you have messaging access on the Forum.) I have an extra one....I wasn't looking to sell it, but maybe we can work something out if you can't find one anywhere else.

I was lucky, when I got my G74 I could not find it in the box but I contacted the retailer and they shipped me one free of charge :)

Maybe it's been answered but I couldn't find it, I'm looking for the default values on the GTX 560m 3GB version. I stupidly went and forgot to write them down or create a profile before I OC'd mine.

Edit - Apparently I had a derp moment and forgot you could click "reset" in MSI Afterburner. So here are the defaults if anyone ever needs them or google searches them.

    775 - Core Clock
    1550 - Shader Clock
    1250 - Memory Clock
