My guess would be that they did a change of the CPU themselves. I would have assumed a bad description, but from what i understand from your first post, you checked using something like GPU-Z on the actual laptop.

i dont see how xm are better than qm, those letters probably dont show much. AnandTech - Alienware's M18x, Part 1: NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 580M in SLI some bench mark shows quite a difference

I'll point you to those two quotes from the review, those scores without an explanation don't mean much:

Hello everyone, I'm thinking about getting G74SX, but I'm from Brazil and I can't go to a physical store and all (I will send it to Miami)... I'd like to know what are some reliable websites where I can customize the notebook and send it to Miami...

    I saw this one:
Gaming Laptops - XOTIC PC - Gaming Notebooks - Custom Laptops - Custom Notebooks
It seems to be really good with lots of customizations... Any recommendations???

Thanks for your help guys :)

unityole. Hi I just bought a 120 gb ssd for my g74sx and I see it in my bios but can't get it to work. I even bought a new win 7 disk. Then I tried and changed the hard drive positions and that doesn't work. I am stuck and frustrated as what to do.

    Thanks...PJ

WHen you say "can't get it to work," are you talking about seeing it in Windows, or trying to perform a new installation on it? You won't see a new drive in Windows Explorer until it's partitioned.

If you are performing a new installation, what do you see when you get to the partition table in Windows Setup? Does it list that disk at all?

Hey TheFreshness, can you confirm once you obtain it that the G74SX-AH71 model does indeed have a 2670 and not a 2630. I was just now looking at your link, and besides it now being priced at 1299 instead of 1423, it's also stating in product details that it has a 2.2 ghz 2630 (which to my knowledge doesn't exist), and then if you scroll down it says it has a 2670.

    Thanks!

I'm just saying that the link you are posting shows under product details an i7 2630. I realize that it also says that it has an 2670 in other areas of the Web page.

I switched the HD positions and used the ssd for the boot, reinstalled windows and up and I ordered the wrong ssd. It should have been a sata2 not 3 so now stuck with putting the original back and have to wait until I can get a 240gb sata2. I hope the prices go down after the New Year. Thanks for getting back to me........PJ

This machine came with an OBSCENE amount of bloatware.

I finally gave up trying to uninstall it all, and opted to reinstall windows on the unit. Unfortunately, the machine does not come with a Windows disc for Windows 7 Professional.

I d/l'd an ISO of Win 7 Professional online last night, and attempted to install, but the install would fail @ 75% during the 'extracting' phase of the Windows Install.

Any ideas? I tried multiple ISOs, and tried installs from both USB AND DVD.

I was able to install a copy of Win 7 Ultimate just fine - but I do not have a key for this :(

If it fails on extracting, and another version installs, I suspect an issue with your ISO. Which one did you use? (i.e., which source and version)

    It just happened again :(

"Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070570"

    I used the following iso:

    Home Premium X64
    http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso

    from this page:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-digitalriver-windows-7-sp1-13-languages.html

Any ideas? I might send this back tomorrow and order an alienware. This is frustrating :(

I've used that image myself, so I know it works. My next suspicion would be your DVD media. Maybe try another brand, if you have one laying around?

Also, burn it at the slowest speed.

    Update:

    It happened once again

I tried to install the .iso in a VM on my imac, and it worked just fine.

I've heard that this could potentially be caused by bad RAM. I just pulled out 3 of the 4 sticks, and I am trying again. Here goes nothing.

Burned @ 2.2x on my imac - several different discs. Also attempted USB installs. No dice.

Someone mentioned on IRC that switching from AHCI to IDE in the BIOS might work - I just gave that a shot. Installing now.

What you actually NEED is a short list, and if you want to keep the installation clean, avoid the Asus crapware.

    • Intel 6 Series Chipset Driver
    • Intel RST
    • Asus ATK package
    • Nvidia Graphics driver
    • Realtek HD Audio driver
    • Fresco USB 3.0 driver
    • Touchpad driver (check your hardware manufacturer)
    • Realtek Ethernet driver
    • WLAN driver (check your hardware manufacturer)
    • Bluetooth driver (check your hardware manufacturer...if applicable & needed)
    • Realtek multiCard Reader driver

Got in the replacement and it's working like it's supposed to. I just finished making the factory restore DVDs and would like to install an Intel SSD for my primary drive before I load up any programs I plan on using. Any chance you could give me some advice on the steps to do this without mucking things up too much? I'm a little wary of cracking it open....

Sure. I'll send you a PM later this evening. Are you planning to do a clean Windows install, or would you like to move you existing installation over to the new SSD? Both options are pretty easy, but the approach is a little different so it'd be helpful to know how you want to set it up.

I think a clean install would be best, that way I know exactly what's in my system. I'm hoping the hardware part is pretty simple? Never done one before in a laptop. Thanks! :D

Hi i just bought this laptop and i was wondering if it was normal to have a 4.5 performance index for the processor. I tried to install the driver for it. It now says i have the 9.2.0.1030 driver but its still at 4.5 out of 7.9. I was wondering if that was the latest version and maybe a link to download all the drivers i need.

Also, i seem to have some problems with the trackpad. it stays active even when my mouse is plugged in and even when i'm typing.

As of right now, the only driver i'm sure i installed right is the nvidia driver. i have the 285.62 version.

It is not normal. It is way to low.

    Mine is:

    CPU: 7.4
    RAM: 7.6
    GPU: 7.2
    HDD: 7.9 (SSD)

No, that score suggests that there's a configuration issue.

You say that you're only sure about the Nvidia driver.....is this after a clean install? It should have come with all the other drivers properly installed (even if they're older versions), so what have you changed since you got it? Why are you unsure about the others? If you could be specific about the modifications you've done, that would help pinpoint the issue.

Well i guess it was a clean install but i didn't do it myself. I bought this computer used. It was about 2 weeks old. The guy before me returned it to the store and they wiped it clean. when i bought it, the tech installed windows but didn't install all the bloatware.
I'm not sure he installed the driver because when i went to the nvidia website they scanned my computer and said i wasn't up to date. That's when i installed the 285.62 driver.
After that i went to check my performance index and i saw the 4.5 for the processor. i thought it was because I didn't have the right driver. i went to the intel website so their program could scan my machine for the driver version, it said i had the 9.2.0.1015 installed. so i checked to see what was the latest version and found the 9.2.0.1030.
I think i downloaded the driver but I'm not sure, it installed something and now the program online scanned the correct driver, but my index is still 4.5 even after reboot.
I then put in the driver and utility CD that came with the computer (i don't know if there is any other CD/DVD that came with it, i think I'm missing some things) i installed everything (i think i installed all the bloatware :p)
    Thoughts?

Update: I put in the asus driver and utility DVD that came with the computer, it said that everything was installed. I went to the explorer and made my way though to the chipset driver. i installed the 1015 version even if it said i had the 1030 version installed. I rebooted my computer and did a re-assessment to update my scores. Now it's like this:
    Processor 7.4
    Memory 7.6
    Graphics 7.2
    Gaming Graphics 7.2
    Primary hard disk 7.9 (ssd)

So i guess that did it!

One question remains; I'm still wondering if i have the latest drivers for everything. where can I verify that?

If you used the drivers disk, many of your drivers are previous versions. That isn't necessarily a disaster, though....."if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a good rule-of-thumb sometimes. :)

I would suggest, however , that you update the WLAN driver if you have an Azurewave card. You need to look in device manager to see which card your unit has....Intel or Azurewave.) The stock Atheros driver for the Azurewave card is known to be buggy, so if you have that card, download v.9.2.1.470, uninstall the current driver, reboot, and install the new one.

There are a couple concerns I would have with this Windows installation. First, check and make sure that it's activated. Second, take a look in Disk Management and see if you still have the recovery partition on the hard drive. If the person who installed it didn't even include the basic drivers, I think calling him/her a "tech" is too generous, and it raises questions about the overall integrity of the installation.

Does it disconnect at a regular interval....and does it reconnect on its own, or do you have to do anything to get the connection back?

First order of business....let's make sure you've got an Intel card (not Azurewave). Go into Device Manager and check the hardware_ID for your card.

PS: No need for all caps to get attention around here....we see the posts whether you yell or not. :)

PPS: I just noticed in your posted image that it shows a connection time of 1:24:30. You've been connected for nearly 1-1/2 hrs.....

I gathered from your previous post that you're using Wi-Fi, not WIMAX. Can you confirm that?

If so, you can disable the WIMAX stuff. The device that matters should be listed as "Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 6150" under Network adapters in Device Manager. It's the parameters for that device that control the card's link with your wireless network.

Okay, so we've confirmed that it's an Intel card. (That's important because Asus uses different cards in these models.....it's not uncommon for owners to use the wrong WLAN or touchpad driver, for example, since Asus doesn't make it clear what hardware they have.)

Can you elaborate a little on what the problem behavior is? As I mentioned, the image showed a 1-1/2 hr connection, which seems pretty stable to me.

Well, its disconnects every 30, sometimes every 5 minutes! Usually, after I click the yellow 'caution triangle' the problem stops, for a little bit, that is.
most, actually almost all the time it says:

The default gateway is not available. Fixed

I've looked EVERYWHERE for the solution! Please help me! :( :(

EDIT:Holy s***! It happened again! WHILE I WAS TRYING TO POST! UGH

Next step is to log onto the router and check its log. (Is this your router or someone else's?) You want to look for a pattern where of repeated messages like "client xxx.xxx.x.xxx disconnected for reason: received deauthentication" followed by the same computer being re-associated.

While you're in there (the router), go to the wireless setup page and make a note of the basic parameter settings.
Wireless mode (802.11n only? or mixed n/b/g?)
Is it on auto-scan, or set to a fixed channel?
Channel width: 20, 40, or auto?
    SSID invisibility
...also, make sure there's no MAC filter table turned on

Then check those same settings on your laptop to be sure they match up. If you're using Intel's PROSet Wireless software, make sure that the channel band is correct....2.4Gb if that's what you're using, as I've found that the Auto setting can be flaky.

Finally, open the Network and Sharing Center -> Manage Wireless Networks, and make sure that your network is at the top of the list.

Skip to the italicized part to see my question...
Just got my SX, and I want to say HO-LEE . I've always been working on powerhouse computers, but this one takes the cake. I configured a Ferrari-formidable version at GenTechPC.com with the following specs:

    i7-2960XM Extreme 2.7-3.7
    32GB DDR3
    300GB Intel 320 SSD (primary)
    600GB Intel 320 SSD (secondary)

I am a VFX artist for a popular website (lets just say if you know anything about AfterEffects, you've probably heard of the site), and I needed a mobile workstation that knows how to kick . After doing some home-brew rendering tests in AE, I can render out in an hour on this machine what took me almost a full day on my last laptop (a used-to-be-awesome maxed out HP DV7T 3300).

I loaded up BF3 on ultra settings and managed to maintain an average 65 frames, and never dropped below 48.

With all of this said, I have what seems to be a most juvinile question. Which port is the USB 3.0 port?

Now you see why I had to talk myself up with everything--because that question threw me below the bus!

The blue colored one. Just look at the port sockets.
    Blue = 3.0
    Black = 2.0

Hah, yeah thanks! I figured it out about 5 seconds after I replied by just plugging up my USB 3.0 external and doing a transfer test. I didnt realize they were color coordinated, though--thanks for the heads up!

Another question I have...I've seen a lot of people complaining about the lack of a NumLock key on the 74SX. Has this been resolved? And an issue I've had with Battlefield 3--when playing using the touchpad, I've noticed that when I zoom down the scope (right click), I cannot fire (left click). I temp fixed this by just assigning a secondary key to zoom, but any fix for this? I'm assuming it is not a game issue...

No....the G74 doesn't have a numlock key or a numerical keypad that works like those on other laptops (or on ANY other computer keyboard I've ever used).

Yeah, that's what I've established from further research. That is basically the only problem I have with this computer so far. Kind of a ty thing to leave out, and this is a big problem with Adobe After Effects as the Ram-Preview Render function uses the num-pad 0.

I'm not a gamer, but I understand it's a huge issue with some games as well. Seems like a completely asinine design choice to me.....I honestly can't imagine what the rationale might have been for doing it this way. It's not just non-standard, but non-standard in a way that diminishes utility without adding anything.....bizarre.
