its strange for me to hear you got a problem with it, the keyboard is awesome! honestly this kind of laptop should be for gaming more than for business work =). and gaming requires high apm, A LOT higher than just 100 words per min. i could swear that all of my friends used my laptop complained about keyboard being too small lol.

although personal preferences, if you have used desktop most of your life, you wouldnt have complained about this keyboard, should be almost perfect if not too small.

have you been using only laptops thats like 10-14 inch?

edit: about the integrated graphic card.. so disapointed to hear that. i guess newegg could be wrong too =/ just a quick question though, if a newer model gaming laptop were to come up, will it have a better graphic card option such as 570, 580 or 6990? and when would that be?

I recently purchased this laptop but neglected to get the larger hard drive. So now I'm trying to install the second hard drive. Maybe I've been away from hardware installation for too long. I'm having trouble connecting the ribbon cable from the new hard drive to the connector on the machine itself. Does anyone know if the black portion is supposed to open up so that I can insert the cable and lock it down?

My other question is much more frivolous. When I first got the ASUS, accessing the "cloud" mode at boot up showed many games including Space Invaders. After experiencing some network problems one day and performing a Live Update, the games went away. I was able to load some other games but have never seen the original list again. Any idea what happened?

    Thanks for any assistance.

    ------------------------
Update: I found the answer to my hard drive question in another forum. The little black piece on the connector slides up slightly so that the ribbon can be inserted. Then the black piece slides back down to hold the ribbon in place.

Yes, it slides up and down. It's weird, because all the other ribbon connectors in there are the hinge kind. This one's the only slider.

I don't know anything about the cloud and game stuff. I always delete those right away!

    Hey technoboy,
There is someone selling the Bigfoot 3x3 1103 cards here in the forums but I didn't notice until after I already ordered mine from Ebay. This is the person I ordered from:

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

I think it was $67 and some change. They shipped it pretty fast and I installed it last night. Unfortunately I wasn't able to document the before and after speeds but my pages do load quicker now.

It was very easy to install. The only tricky part will be when my third antennae arrives and I get to installing that. You just go to the bigfoot site to download the drivers and control software.

It took me all of 7 minutes to install the card and software.

brodyboy, i took out my original HDD to install a SSD and now I want to use that hardrive on another laptop of mine cause the space is 750gb clearly bigger and i want a fresh window on it too, however it still has my previous window os + my files on it, should i just reformat it and clean everything and reinstall window again? if so what kind of format would be best?

also how do i reformat and reinstall cause this other laptop of mine doesnt have a secondary drive, only has 1 drive slot so basically i put it in, window loads up and how to reinstall fresh window on it?

I just flashed the bios and updated the ATK Package and the keyboard problem is gone. No more missed space bar strokes. I'm glad this issue is solved for me. I really didn't want to have to use an external keyboard.

Between the keyboard fix and my Bigfoot Wireless-N 1103; I'm very pleased with this laptop. My last three laptops were Alienware's, but I got tired of having a laptop that's not able to function for more than two years before dying.

Lol, ha we posted at the same time technoboy!

sorry to disappoint you but thats highly unlikely. ASUS wont cater to the higher end line of gaming laptop than what they already have.

Yes, if you don't want or need anything on that drive, you can just reformat it for the new installation. There are many ways to do this, but probably the easiest way is to let the Windows Installer do it.

Just put the drive, as it is, in the new computer and start running your Windows Installer disc. When you get to that screen that asks what drive/partition you want to use for Windows, select "Advanced Drive Options" down toward the bottom of the dialog box. Once you're in there, select each existing partition and select the "Delete" option. After all the partitions are gone, go back and Windows will now see the whole drive as unallocated space. You can choose to use the whole thing for Windows, or to make a smaller partition if you like.

    Hello!

I'm sporting an HP Envy 14 as of january this year and I'm not satisfied with it at all. First of all it gets too hot and therefore very noisy. It's enough to have skype on for the fans to get really loud. Second I wan't to install another HDD because I'm sick of having an external HDD plugged in (got a SSD 60gb in the comp). Tried to replace the cd-reader but HP has ed up my computer and I can't deassemble it.

So I'm thinking about selling it and buying the G74SX. I have a few questions though.

Does it get noisy? Can you watch a 1080p movie without it sounding like an airplane? How warm is it when idling/gaming? Are you guys happy with the build quality? I thought it looked terrible at first glance (too much "gaming" theme over it) but now I'm starting to like it, it seems quite robust but would like some more info on it.

And what is the model I should get? I can get a G74SX-TZ087V for about $1700. Is that a good price?

Alot of questions, hope I can get some answered.

    Thanks guys!

I find it to be one of the quietest laptops I've ever owned. And for such a powerful machine, I'm continually amazed at how cool it runs.

The design itself is excellent....but Asus quality control is poor, so "build quality" isn't that easy to describe. In theory...great build quality. In reality...these things seem to have lots of little niggling issues related to sloppy assembly....touchpad grounding failure, speaker rattle...things like that. If someone wants a computer they can just buy, turn on, and everything will work perfectly out of the box without any knowledge or intervention on their part, this might not be a good choice.

From what I've seen, these things are oddly priced like commodities.....one price today, up or down tomorrow, different next week. So it's impossible to identify a "good price" when it could well be $100 more or less by Friday!

    Hi Huggab0y,

I have owned several Dell and several Alienware laptops and the build quality feels far superior on this Asus G74SX. Everything you need to get to is within easy reach through one large cover on the back.

This is also the quietest and coolest running laptops I've used a well. Mind you, my previous rigs have been high end gaming laptops.

I had an issue with the space bar not not registering my input, but updating the bios and drivers solved that issue. I have had no other issues and am very pleased with the G74SX.

    Sounds good!

Yeah I guess there is no laptop with flawless build quality, except the macs that is...

I've heard that some ASUS laptops had their graphic card gimped for some reason, should I be worried of that when purchasing?

It's the configurations built specifically for mass retailers like Best Buy and Staples that have the gimped GPU. Avoid those and you should be fine.

the model # for those gimped GPU machine is G74SX-BBK7

if your sole purpose is to get a better graphic card on that machine, not worrying about 1080p and blueray, getting anything other than BBK7 for the G74 series is totally not worth it, you will easily spend a 300+ dollar just because the graphic card only runs 2/3 of the original buswidth, which imo isnt worth the money

however there is currently one on sale on ncix, and its 1300 A1 model and not the BBk7 and it has all the regular stuff (original graphic card, 1080p, blueray drive), or u can get the BBK7 version for 950 on newegg, easily 350 dollar difference.

also for anyone who got that Kingston Hyper X plug n play 1866 C11 memory 2x4GB, apparently i read bunch of benchmark on that memory alone compare to a 1333 ddr3 memory, its overall 6-10% improvement on graphics, game, speed performance.

imo 6% increase in performance isnt bad, especially it can help boost up couple frames/sec in gamse on high quality, good for both gaming and business use. but only bad side to it is that it cost 140 dollars and with tax its easily over 160.

The "gimped" model, as so many like to call it, was the perfect choice for me. If I wanted a hardcore gaming rig, even the non-gimped model wouldn't be anywhere near the top ten list for sure.

As far as the lower 1600x900 resolution goes I actually prefer it on a 17" screen and the led back lit screen looks real good. For me it's easier to view over long periods and I'm happy to save the 1080 for my 50" flat screen at home which is also where I choose to watch blu-ray movies. I've never cared for 3D so it's a non issue.

It all depends on what you're looking to get out of your laptop. If you want a hardcore gaming laptop; this isn't it. It's has mid-pack gaming performance which for me and many is enough. All in all, the level of performance, build quality, features and price were exactly what I was looking for. IMHO, when I considered the G74SX with all the bells and whistles the price was getting too close to that of some very serious rigs with more powerful single or dual GPU rigs.

Any way you slice it, the"gimped" model and the non-gimped model are mid-level laptops that both are very capable at many things and represent what I think is a good bang for the buck. It just depends on what your needs are and how much you're willing to spend.

I'm gonna second that. I was scared when I found out I bought a "gimped" version of the G74SX but after I completed my usual system optimization and updating of drivers, it performs quite well considering the price. I can max out Crysis at the native resolution with a playable framerate.

Glad to hear you're happy with your laptop. I wouldn't be concerned that we have a "gimped" version of the G74SX. Even the maxed out version of the G74 has "gimped" performance compared to the bleeding edge, uber high end rigs which this laptop was never designed to compete with. I think ASUS has done a great job building a moderately priced machine that performs admirably at just about anything you throw at it. I play Crysis and Fallout 3 and it's perfect for that. Another big plus to operating at this level of performance is how cool and quiet this laptop runs. No more hoover. :D

Hey, what are the options for upgrading a 12GB ram model to 16GB? Do I need to buy an entirely new set of ram or can I grab a single stick off newegg?

Just buy another 4Gb module. AT least get the exact same specs...ideally, buy the same brand. (If yours came with ASint, that might be hard. I'm not sure that brand is sold much here.)

By default the G74's use 4GB modules. If you have 8GB, then you have two 4GB sticks installed. There are 4 memory slots on the G74 so it's easy to have anywhere from 4GB to 16GB. If you currently have 8GB,you could upgrade to 16GB by buying two 4GB memory sticks which can be had at Newegg for just over $40.

I was thinking of getting this model:
    Newegg.ca - ASUS G74SX-DH73-3D Notebook Intel Core i7 2670QM(2.20GHz) 17.3" 12GB Memory DDR3 1.5TB HDD 7200rpm Blu-ray-enabled DVD±RW/CD-RW NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M
    (I want the 120hz screen)
And weirdly it comes with 12GB ram. This kinda bugs me and I figure that if a few bucks will give me peace I should go for it.

Unfortunately I don't know what kind of ram it comes with. I assume any 9 cas 1333mhz memory will work but what is this pc3 wizzardry?

Is pc3 10600, 10660 and 10666 all the same stuff?

Different manufacturers label their DDR3 1333MHz RAM with different theoretical maximum bandwidth numbers. 10600/10660/10666 all mean the same 1333MHz speed, so it doesn't matter which kind you get.

Most of the configurations I've seen come with 12Gb, so that's not atypical. I believe the specs of the RAM in each unit are the same, but Asus uses brands interchangeably. There's really no way to know which kind you're going to get until you take delivery and open it up.

    Hello,
Where did you find the 1.0.0014 ? In the Asus download site, I only find the 1.0.0008 version.
Also there is no Atheros WLAN driver, but the Intel Wi-Fi one?

The main Asus product support pages are always slow to post updates, even though the Asus servers do have the more recent stuff. Here's a direct link to ATK Package 1.0.0014 as posted on their ftp site.

I'm pretty sure there's an Atheros driver posted there somewhere, but again, it's an old one. (And some old Atheros drivers are known to cause serious latency issues. :( The newer ones fix that.) Here's a link to the latest Atheros 9.2.1.459 driver.

    @BrodyBoy
    Thank you for your answer.

I plan to buy the G74SX, and have a question about the Insert/Delete key. This is a single key and not two separate keys as standard keyboard. Does it mean I have to press Shift to get Delete key (no shift to get Insert), which would be very inconvenient? Also I have some softwares that need Shift-Delete key combination, how can I handle this?

I have been doing a LOT of reading here and other places and broke down and decided to buy one. Got the edition with the 750gig HD and 12 Gigs in it.

I got all setup, connections to Wi-Fi and such, and thought things were going to be ok. Bought an extra 4 GIGs of memory, of which I put in the machine, it was Crucial, and seemed ok, then the problems started, or I noticed them

Download the upgrades from Microsoft and got all the noted Drivers from the auto Asus downloads in it. Turned it off and came back the next morning and when it booted up I could see sparkles, or white on the outsides of the screen, but could hear the music sounds and waited until it booted all the way up. Since it was just the black screen I had to do the Power Button to shut it down, and then did the safe mode to get it back up and going.

I had done the DVD Recovery disc, so after messing for hours with it decided to try that, and seemed to work ok, until I turn it off. Then it does the same thing again, acting like it is telling the screen to go to a resolution it doen't know what to do.

Decided to try the F9 on restart and put it back in from the Hard drive Image that was on the drive, no extras added this time, so will see what it does tomorrow.

Any have any ideas on what this could possibly be, I think it is more a software thing, then a hardware issue, because if I do a reboot and get it started under F8 or tell it to start Windows normally it comes up.

It acts like it is not shutting down correctly to me, and wondering if there is hidden bloat wear that could be doing this.

Open for any ideas or suggestions on this.
    Thanks, Jeff

It is a single key but it's the other way around. It is delete by default, you press the shift key for insert.

Thank you, but then I need often also in some software the real Shift-Ins combination, so it looks like I am stuck? Unless I have set off NumLock most of the time, so I can use the big Insert/Delete of the numeric keypad.

For consistency, Asus should label the Insert on top of the Delete, this would be coherent with the shift press to get the Insert (as to Shift press to get upper case letters).

The numpad does have separate insert and delete keys, but some users have had complaints about the numlock function. It was originally just a calculator! I think they've fixed that in recent BIOS/ATK updates though.

You could always use a program like KeyTweak if you need an Insert key on the main keyboard.

It should be functional after you do the factory restore. Not that the shipped setup is the latest or even a "good" configuration, but it should work.

What drivers or programs did you install before this weird behavior started?

First step....uninstall Live Update. It's a bad program and the Asus updates are never current. The current BIOS is version 203, which you can download from the Asus product page. So you just need to see which one you have. (Press F2 immediately after powering up to enter the BIOS...you'll see the installed version on the first page.)

It's not really necessary to do BIOS updates unless you're having a specific problem that a new version fixes. But if you do, do NOT use the WinFlash program. Use the EasyFlash utility built into the BIOS itself, and be sure to use a FAT32-formatted thumbdrive.

hey there everybody ... I am thinking about buying the G74Sx . I have been reading fourms and websites for weeks and I think this system is by far the best option over anything out there... my problem is I am computer challenged when it comes to the technical stuff.. so many different opinions on what / what not to get in the system. That being said I play WoW and am so confused on what I need for optimum performance ... if you have the time please give me a rundown on the best configuration for a system that I can play WoW on... thanks

I think pretty much any configuration of this laptop would work fine for your games. Key differences, in terms of pricing, are the type of optical drive, the amount of RAM, and the hard drives(s). I'd get the optical drive you want now, but the other two are very easy and cheap to change/upgrade these days, so they're not as important. (The optical drive is easy to swap, too, but they're just not as readily available.)

Thank you for mentioning the KeyTweak program. I found this useful tutorial on how to use it:
How do I ... remap my keyboard with KeyTweak? | TechRepublic

Since apparently the G74SX Pause/Break (or Pause/Attn) key is seldom used, I think I will remap it with Insert. So from left to right I will have : Insert -> Print screen/SysRq -> Delete.
A better sequence could be: Print Screen/SysRq -> Insert -> Delete which means remapping 2 keys.

OPTICAL DRIVE: If you think you'll ever want to watch blu-rays on it, get the blu-ray drive now. (There are some configurations that have a blu-ray burner, but that's a pretty specialized use....I'll bet most owners would never want or need that.)

RAM: Most configurations I've seen come with 12Gb, and I think that's more than enough for the vast majority of users. As I mentioned though, it's very easy & inexpensive to add more memory later, so I'd put this one as the lowest priority, i.e., just take whatever RAM comes with the configuration that best meets your other criteria.

HARD DRIVE: Some configs only come with one hard drive, some come with two. If you don't think you're the kind of owner that is apt to upgrade to an SSD, add/replace a hard drive, things like that...in other words, if you really just want to be right from the beginning and never have to tinker with it later....I'd get a configuration that has two hard drives now. IMO, it's a good idea to have data and the operating system on separate drives. That makes it easier to back things up and fix things if they ever go haywire. ;)

The A1 and DH71 models both fit all the above criteria well.....12Gb RAM, blu-ray drive, two 750Gb hard drives. If you decide you want blu-ray and two hard drives, those are excellent options....there really wouldn't be anything you need to upgrade. You can go down the price ladder with configurations that exclude bl-ray, have smaller hard drives, less RAM, etc.

Ha! That's precisely an issue that the BIOS updates have (supposedly) fixed.

If you're having keyboard, numpad, or numlock issues, it's recommended that you update to BIOS 203 and ATK Package 1.0.0014.

    BIOS:
    • Download BIOS v203.
    • Extract the zip file to a USB thumbdrive that is formatted in FAT32.
    • Turn off the computer, insert the thumbrive into a USB port.
    • Restart and hit F2 immediately to access the BIOS.
    • Navigate to the EasyFlash utility, select it and hit Enter.
    • Follow the on-screen directions to do the update.
    • The computer is completely off when the BIOS update is finished.
    • Removed the thumbdrive and re-start.

    ATK Package
(if you're currently running an earlier version):
    • Download ATK Package v1.0.0014. Extract the zip file.
    • Uninstall your current ATK Package and reboot.
    • Run the Installer for the new ATK PAckage (from the folder where you extracted it).
    • Reboot
I can't guarantee that this will resolve all keyboard issues. Some owners, unfortunately, have not had successful resolution with the various BIOS and ATK updates released so far.

what's up guys. i might as well jump in here, as i just bought the G74Sx DH71 model off of amazon. i liked what amazon offered much better than newegg.
anyway, i have already dl the bios and atk files, and will follow your instructions for installing them when my machine arrives. my question is about the power4gear hybrid utility. what is it, and what does it do? also the link offered earlier in this thread didn't work, so do you have another working link for it? i also heard that in order for the sound to be louder and more clear, you had to uncheck one of the default settings. is there any truth to that, and if so, which one? although it was a different model i read that about, i was assuming it might be problematic along the line. thanks.

Hi Guys, I planned to get a unit of this notebook because due to the nature of my work, I do a lot of VMware running testing on application. My current notebook is a Acer 6935G but unfortunate that the Intel VT-X was disabled from the bios and there is no way to change it. Can someone here help to verify this by running the securable in your G74sx?

Power4Gear is like most other Asus utilities- it replicates a Windows utility and purports to makes routine functions easier by putting them behind a snazzy interface. If you already use Windows, especially on a laptop, you're probably familiar with power management....it's where you can adjust power usage and create different profiles to optimize power usage in different situations. Power4Gear is essentially a third-party power manager that "overlays" the Windows' power controls. It's not necessary, but some people like to use it. It will already be installed on your G74, so you don't need to download it.

There's a handy thread here on NBR that describes many of the Asus bloatware programs. You might find this useful when deciding which programs you want to keep, and which to uninstall.

There are a variety of ways to try and improve the sound in this laptop. But bottom line...it has two very small, very cheap, very-poorly-placed stereo speakers, and there's only so much you can get out of them. I think that this computer was probably designed with the expectation that many people would use an external audio set-up, because it appears little effort went into optimizing the internal audio.

That said, here are three different options I know of for improving the sound. You can easily try each and decide which you like best.

    • Choose the "Equalizer" option (in the "Sound Effects" tab) of Realtek Audio Manager that sounds best to you, then tweak it 'til you get audio performance that best suits your taste.
    • Use Creative THX TruStudioPro and set it to "External Speakers." This is a pre-set equalizer that does a pretty good job of adding depth and punching up the lower end. The perceived result is greater "loudness."
    • Download SRS Audio Essentials (paid or limited free version). I have not used this one myself yet, but some G74 owners have reported that they prefer it to THX. I intend to give it a try, but I'm not expecting these speakers to ever sound "good." I'm hoping for "tolerable." ;)

Hi BrodyBoy, thanks for the links for the bios and atk package. I don't think I would ever have found them on asus's site. Their downloads site is just confusing. Also thanks for the sound advice. I've already played around with the thx true studio software but sometimes get a buzzy sound from the speakers with it. I'll try the other options you mentioned. Thanks!
